PM me :) Thanks!!! :) I thought I answered most of your questions via PM, but will go into a little more detail. First, let me say the patient flow is not as big a problem as some make it out too be (it is not great, but it is not terrible either). D1 you will do some shadowing, perio, and sim lab work (preps and resto's, wax-ups, occlusion...etc). D2 year you get the BIG intro to clinic work (you have fixed+lab, removable+lab...etc), you will also start doing simple cleanings on patients this year. D3 and D4 are BIG into clinic work and requirements. The begining of D3 you do a TON of data collection and treatment planning, quite a bit of perio, and a small amount of restorative (not that you can't do more, just unlikley that you will do a BUNCH more). As the year progresses I hear it gets better and we really start putting out the work during end of D3 and begining of D4. I know this sounds bad, but remember that one day YOU will likely be a D4 as well and will need to get stuff done to graduate and when that happens you too will get the patients so that you can finish on time. That is just kinda how it works, now there are some who have done quite a bit as D3's, but I would say on the average BEGINING of D3 you will not be getting a TON of clinical requirements done. If you have any further specific questions feel free to ask. Let me say that during the first 2 years you will take A TON of tests. I remember having a test every day for 2 weeks during some of our first 2 years at the school. Early on you will be SWAMPED with tests and studying. (also let me say that I bet most of this is all VERY similar to other schools) dsmith1618 12-03-2011, 06:39 PM Called at 10am December 1st eastern time!!!!:) mi2ni 12-03-2011, 06:54 PM I thought I answered most of your questions via PM, but will go into a little more detail. I have been in touch with one of D-3 students at Tufts, and it seems their clinical program is top notch. However, Nova is cheaper, and I very much prefer to be in Florida! First, let me say I think it would be HIGHLY unlikely at ANY school to get all of your clinic work done at the begining of your D3 year. Second, I would say that the reason it is a little slow early on is really common sense. To begin you are just starting and they want you to do more diagnosis and treatment planning than actual hard treatment (they want to ease you into clinic), also this goes with the fact that you mainly get NEW patients (before you can treat a new patient you need to diagnose and treatment plan). Also, like you said, most of the D4's get the patients they need to graduate. Once again, this may sound bad, but one day you may find yourself in that situation. It is definatly NOT because of studies (this year we only had like 6 classes and 1 lab (really not that bad at all). mi2ni 12-04-2011, 12:08 PM First, let me say I think it would be HIGHLY unlikely at ANY school to get all of your clinic work done at the begining of your D3 year. I needed to know if this was because of limited patient pool or the design of the curriculum. I have another question for you. When you speak with current D4 students (with no major plans for specializing), are they fine to go directly to private practice (associate position), or they rather do a GPR? I know that many D4s are still deciding, but just want to get a feel for it. Hordel 85 12-04-2011, 02:48 PM Thanks again for clarification. To be honest, the requirements at Nova are not very difficult. Yet, at the end of the day dental school is what each student makes it. Some students are planning on going on to higher education and therefore have not been to worried about getting a ton of clinical experience and more worried about just graduating because they know they will get more experience in the future. However, others have no intent on any higher education and therefore are VERY intent on getting as much experience as possible, no matter what the requirements are. I know of a couple students who have already done some endos, multiple crowns, dentures...etc. Some of it is luck of the draw and some of it is connections (if you know a bunch of D4's and get their patients you can get a ton done quick). xtatic3ne 12-06-2011, 12:42 PM accepted last month ....excited nova cop here i come..time to enjoy life a little before it starts poiu 12-06-2011, 01:42 PM How many chairs are there in clinic? I'm trying to figure out how much debt I will be looking at compared to some other schools. Thanks I think you can find info like this on their website. There is NO question that Nova is one of the MOST expensive schools (i think at least 300,000 seems about right). But I do not know the exact figures, I am actually going via the Army so I have not really concerned myself with cost too much. We pay like 1,300 a month right across the street at sunforest for a one bedroom (I would advise finding another place, don't like it here too much but it is waling distance). startrak 12-13-2011, 07:18 PM I think you can find info like this on their website. Not actually true about Nova being one of the most expensive schools. For in state students, It ranks 41st out of the 57 schools in the 2011 ADEA guide to dental schools. That's bottom 30%. As for being an out of state student, it's 22 out of 57, putting it in the cheapest 38%. So it's actually on the cheaper side if you are only accepted to out of state schools. A lot of students complain about it being really expensive, but you need to look at it in relation to other schools. You can see all the numbers at the following link: http://dent.osu.edu/admissions/COST%20of%20ATTENDANCE%20-%202011.pdf Also, 1300 for sunforest 1 bedroom?! That's a heck of a lot more expensive than what some of my classmates pay to live there.. You can get a 1 br at Cameron cove, about a quarter mile from school for 1000 (includes free ac, trash, water), also I pay 1350 for a 3 bedroom at uparc which is <1 mile from school and fairly new. There are plenty of options for living. tennis21 12-13-2011, 07:51 PM When do classes start?? Are we talking July or August? startrak 12-14-2011, 12:58 PM When do classes start?? Is the total cost for D2-D4 just ~51K (plus whatever % inflation increase), or there are other significant costs added to the total amount (clinic fees, etc.)? I am trying to calculate the 4 year cost of attending, excluding living expenses. startrak 12-22-2011, 05:01 PM One more question for startrak and Hordel 85: I know the equipment cost paid for the first year is for purchasing the equipment ($10k-$12k?) which is added to $51k tuition. I am trying to calculate the 4 year cost of attending, excluding living expenses. Our D1 year was $9,600, D2 was $6,500. As far as I know, that covers all of our instrument expenses for your 4 years (you may spend an extra 25-50 each year buying extra practice teeth etc. if you practice a lot). 4th year there are some expenses in regards to taking licensure exams, although I have no idea how much they cost (plus itll be the same cost wherever you go to school) I don't know of any clinic fees. shdwpally 12-28-2011, 11:41 PM Any cons to living on campus? The other schools are UT, UF, and Lecom. Any advice on where to rent a nice 1 bedroom close to campus fairly reasonable? 12345cj 01-10-2012, 02:16 PM There is probably about 150 chairs or so. Rotation schedule just varies, but it is not much ( I had like 2 Pedo rotations, 5 OS rotations, 4 on call rotations, 1 ortho rotation, and 3 perio rotations this semester to give you an idea). 150chairs are for the approx 220 D3and D4s right? Is that why you don't get much experience as a D3? I heard a few bad rumors about students not getting chair time and working in satelite clinics with little supervision? Are those untrue? I am planning on attending Nova but just got an out of state offer from a school with a brand new clinic so now I am a little torn... Hordel 01-19-2012, 03:11 PM You have to remeber 1/2 of that 220, probably a little higher, is D4's who spend a significant amount of time out on rotation. I will just say that most dental schools have THEIR idea on when you should finish things and tend to make sure that you stick to that timeline. So, NO it is NOT hard to get a chair as long as you book about a half a week to a week before the appointment. As for the satelite clinics, I do not really know because I have not personally done any treatment at any of them yet. It is really YOUR choice on where to go. Best of luck! SMCohen 02-05-2012, 06:27 PM 150chairs are for the approx 220 D3and D4s right? Is that why you don't get much experience as a D3? I heard a few bad rumors about students not getting chair time and working in satelite clinics with little supervision? Are those untrue? I am planning on attending Nova but just got an out of state offer from a school with a brand new clinic so now I am a little torn... In your 4th year, you're assigned to one of two offsite clinics - OP or NMB. OP is a Ryan White clinic, meaning it is government-funded for HIV+ patients. I believe there are only 8 chairs (maybe 12?) at this clinic, and you get in based on a lottery system (if you put OP as your preference). People tend to choose OP because you don't have to sell a treatment plan, you do less lab work for procedures, and the perception is that you get more of your requirements accomplished here. The last point is true for some people - it is really luck of the draw, which is true for all clinical experiences. NMB is a ~30 chair clinic, and is run more like the main predoc clinic. You're divided into groups and report to/work with a team leader who is supposed to monitor your progress. Like the main clinic, you have to schedule your own patients, sell treatment plans, do lab work. The major difference is that they do not have specialists (except for endo) on staff, so your group leader makes the call like a general dentist would in private practice, in most scenarios. The perception is that you get more done at this clinic, than you do at the main clinic - since you don't have to call on so many specialists, it's supposed to go faster. Certain things, like data collection, are accomplished faster, but I cannot say that this clinic has been more productive than the main clinic. Like I said before, it's luck of the draw... how reliable your patients are, and what kind of procedures they need At the main clinic, I've never had a problem getting a chair. Even if you're put on 'standby' (waitlisted for a chair), you usually end up getting one, but you start 15-30 min late. 12345cj 02-06-2012, 02:10 PM So you are happy with your clinical experience? SMCohen 02-07-2012, 10:18 AM So you are happy with your clinical experience? Thanks for the response! Yes and no. Yes: We have heard from external sources (hiring dentists, faculty at residency programs, etc.), on several occasions, that Nova students receive good clinical training. When faculty at the school says it, I usually don't think anything of it, but it's nice to hear it from external sources. I don't know if this is true though, since I haven't had a chance to compare my skills with a dentist trained at another school. No: The procedures you get are luck of the draw. I really feel that the faculty could put in a system that allows for better screening of patients as well as distribution of procedures, so that it's not so skewed. I understand the importance of comprehensive care, but at the same time, it's not fair for some people to be penalized when they were just unlucky. ilovedog 02-08-2012, 04:55 PM I've been a high hold since dec. I know the start of school is still months away, but if any of you guys want to secure a place early, I'm looking for a roommate starting from anywhere between mid-June to early to mid-July. I am a medical student at NSU and will be starting my 3rd year rotations on July 1st. I live in a nice condo complex, about 5 miles from school, built in 2005 and has amenities including a gym, resort style pool and basketball/tennis/volleyball courts. It is perfect for any student who just wants a quiet, comfortable and worry-free place to live and study. I've lived in this complex for 3 years without any problems. The complexes right by school have histories of break-ins. Where I live is a private gated complex without any history of crime, which is why I chose to live a little further away from campus. Rent: $600 + half utilities includes: -Fully furnished master bedroom with lakeview, and large walk-in closet -Private bathroom inside bedroom-no sharing -Free access to washer/dryer inside condo -Common areas are fully furnished -Split floorplan, bedrooms are on opposite sides of the living room -Access to all amenities I am 25 years old, male, originally from Long Island NY, and really laid back. I have no preference for a roomate being any gender, race, religion, etc. All I would really ask for in a roommate is to be neat, clean and considerate. Non-smokers only. Just 2 miles from Nova Southeastern University, it is easy to bike ride (sidewalks the entire way) or a quick drive to class. Located in Pine Island Ridge, a quiet golf-country club community west of Pine Island Road, you will have access to amenities such as the pools, gym, clubhouse, and golf course. A shopping plaza with a Publix is just 1 mile away. Currently, you have your choice of rooms with one looking northeast towards the stunning Florida sunrise or the other facing west to the beautiful nature preserve. The nature preserve has trails for hiking/running and a wonderful playground (for when you need to let your inner child out). The bedrooms are upstairs and roughly 11’x12’ with a spacious 7’ closet and an overhead fan-light unit. Fully furnished including: twin bed, large desk, night stand, dresser, and area rug. You would be sharing a sizeable upstairs hall bathroom featuring a large shower with floor-to-ceiling linen cabinet. You will have access to a FULLY APPLIANCED kitchen, which includes a dishwasher and two full sized fridges (so essentially you get half a fridge). Also there is no need to bring your own dishes! We have dishes, cookware, cups, and silverware. As you’ll be spending a lot of time studying but will want to wear clean scrubs, you don’t want to have to go to a Laundromat or “down the hall” to a communal washer drier. We have our own full size in-house WASHER & DRYER. Down time is also essential for survival in med school. No need to worry because CABLE is INCLUDED with your monthly rent. All other UTILITIES are also INCLUDED in the monthly rent, including electricity. Finally, you are also living with a M3 and a M2/former MBS. We have all the notes and practice tests for the past 2 years, and know all the tricks for survival at Nova. Asking $600 per month. If interested please contact Mike or Jess at jf881@nova.edu or 813-956-6505 (call or text). maroc12 06-28-2012, 09:04 AM i got accepted to nova :) hello classmates :) I'm in too.
