It is very close between UDM and Buffalo. The amazing reputation of UDM's clinical training is why i love the school so much, though Buffalo also has a great clinical education and tuition that can not be beat as a NY resident. IMO

It is going to be a hard decision.

hey everyone. so i was accepted to UDM Dec 1st, and made my deposit right when it was due and now am STILL debating between a few schools. But does anyone know what the 2nd deposit deadline is for UDM??? I know the other school I'm debating between is due April 2nd but I am not sure when UDM's is???

I interviewed Feb 22. and it was for a waitlist spot. So yes the class is full. However I was put on the waitlist exactly one week following, and today I got a call from Dr. Jeffers. SO. If you want to go to Detroit, go to the interview ;)

when was your interview, when were you put in wait list and when did u get accepted? I interviewed on 04/27/2012. was advised that classes are full, but they might be expanding the classes.

My interview was April 13th, and got acceptance on April 19th.

the new class size is VERY new stuff, I HIGHLY doubt they have all spots full and its detroit mercy, this school is notorious for accepting students up to 2-3 days before orientation. IMO, you still have a great shot of getting in

no... mercy doesn't favor in vs out of staters.... the reason there are more in-staters is because well... many local kids would rather stay in-house (such as much myself)

an out of stater has the same theoretical chance as an in-stater.

I forgot which one it was, but one of their main funding was cut off recently, so they needed to GREATLY increase their class size to make up for the loss.... I think it was approx 4 million per year fund (not 100% sure of the details)

hmmmm.... I don't know the effect.

I do know they are going to split-system semesters. Half the class will be in 1 section (8 weeks), and the other half in the other section.

So for example, if first semester of DS1 has 10 classes.... Half of you guys will take 5 classes for 8 weeks, and then for the 2nd 8-weeks, u take the other 5 classes. Doing it this way will not effect simlab too much, as it is already equipped to handle (approx) 100+ students

No, I already made up my mind about where to go and put down my deposit at the other school.

They called me a couple of months ago to ask if I'm still interested (did not interview) and I told them I had multiple offers Dec 1 and accepted one already. Then they wanted to know where I was going, which schools I interviewed etc. I wondered why they wanted a full analysis!
Now I see they need the info to be a little more proactive next cycle. They really started too late to invite applicants.

UDM also called me in February asking if I was still interested. I said yes... and then in April I got an interview and was just placed on the alternate list on Monday. Hopefully there will be some movement in the near future!

It's usually around 80% of those with deposits ending up with the class. I think last year they had 37 off the alternate list get offered spots. the thing I am not sure about is the expansion of the class. When I interviewed, in mid February the class was all but full and they were close to being done with interviews. But with the addition of 60 or so spots not sure if they are going to pull kids who were on the wait list or interview new ones. I sure hope it is the former

I interviewed early February, and there were only a few spots open then, so I was essentially interviewing for a spot on the alternate list. I'm hoping to hear something soon, wish they would offer so I don't have to wait for my number one school. Anyways, as to your question, if they are at about 120 right now, everything I've heard is they intend to go all the way up to 160 and this is from some reliable people inside the school. I'm assuming you'd be interviewing for a alternate list, but a lot of cases is they place you on the waitlist and call you soon after with an offer.

I hope to hear something soon, but if they're still trying to get people in to interview means there are still spots available. Also I've been told that in end of May/June a lot of the Canadian dental schools send out their offers and a lot of times there are Canadian students currently in UDM's class that will opt to go to a school in Canada over the US, and this results in movement off the waitlist.

I also called them a week ago and they said there was some slow movement off the waitlist. I'm not sure if I'm on a different waitlist than people who interviewed after me since there are new spots being opened up. Typically there is a decent amount of movement, so I'm staying optimistic and staying in contact with them.

I wish I had some more information to add to the discussion, but I don't. I did see that the last two months a lot of the acceptances came on the Thursday and Friday before the end of the month so maybe next week or the one after we will see some legitimate movement on the waitlist.

the 120 class size currently is guaranteed, they got a "verbal" confirmation to 140 as well, but they are waiting for it to be official (referring to 140 class size)

Apparently they sent my actual forms to an address I lived at last August (I've moved twice since then and have updated my address with them each time). Hopefully we all will know something soon. As for now, patience is a great thing to possess!

I was told that the interview takes 2 hours, so maybe you could just change in the washroom after the interview. (Just don't let them catch you do that)

Yes, 120 seats are currently filled. They might go to 140 (20 more seats) but it is not approved yet. They will expand the class to 160 in the next year or two but NOT likely this year.

I got very nervous/excited when UDM called me this morning, but it was only to ask for another transcript. That was a definite letdown. Still (im)patiently waiting!

Sure would like to know something before I have to resend out all my apps next week, would save me a lot of money. But they won't be adding spots until July 9th and only then if CODA approves the move up to 160, which is where they plan to take the class if they can, so for now the only movement would be people pulling off their offers.

Anyone else getting their new apps ready? Can't access AADSAS anymore, so no more updates from there. Does anyone know what schools whose waitlist you're on want you to do in regards to the reapplying, I just assume you reapply and still remain on the waitlist.

Splitting the 10 classes is not really a bad thing. It's like a quarter system, which is used by some current dental schools. You can still relate material from the first 5 to the later 5 classes, like organic chem 1 and ochem2. I think the quarter system makes it easier to concentrate on a select 5 classes rather than concepts across a whole 10. It really depends on the person, some will like it others won't. Your not at a disadvantage at all. Also less finals clumped together.

first of all, this is a new strategy, they have not implemented anything yet. so no one can comment on how succesful/fail it is.

This concept of learning one thing and having it pertain into another class is ALL throughout dental school. Its not like the usual semester system doesn't have this problem. Don't be surprised to walk into a test and about 5-10% of questions came from material not covered during the class (nor was found in text books). This is dental school for ya, if your doing a classic semester, or a "split" semester (like what UDM is going to do soon) is almost irrelevant, you will be frustrated either way it goes.

Now having said all that, I am having some of the best time of my life in dental school right now..... I will forget my years as a dental student, and I am making sure of that.

Kind of annoying, especially if I don't hear any good news if they get the ok to expand. At the time I interviewed in February I was told they were done interviewing and the alternate list was pretty much set. Now it seems like they have been interviewing people every week. For some reason it'll bug me if they put me on the list and then just interviewed more and more people and then ultimately admitted them. I would've rather them flat out say no than put me on the alternate list. By the time the full expansion has been reached, it'll be almost 70 spots they've added, not to mention those offered who opt to go elsewhere.

Being pessimistic, I just feel like if I wasn't good enough to be offered one of the 70 spots, why am I on your alternate list? Almost feel like if I don't get in, what's the point of even reapplying to them since when I interviewed the number of spots was almost equivalent to a full class when you consider the number of spots they've added and the spots that have likely opened up. Really would like to hear some positive news soon.

I talked to Bethsave last Friday when she gave me the tour of UDM, she said they still have to interview about 10 more people.

Maybe they're just covering their bases, but you'd like to think they'd be happy offering those that are already on the waitlist if a spot opened up, instead of interviewing new people every week. Have to think those still going to interviews also don't have a lot of options so would be likely to accept if offered.

I just got the same. I decided to resubmit my application in the mean time. It was painful to spend all that money again, but better in the long run I think.

The CODA meeting wasn't until sometime in July. The class is currently at 120 and from what I've heard that is most likely where they are going to keep it for the class of 2016. They are expected to bump it up to 160 for this coming cycle.

With that said, then why would UDM be so inclined to keep giving interviews into late-June to add more and more people to the waitlist if they didn't want to increase the class size now? Just trying to make sense of it all...

That's what I recall from my interview about a month ago. The hope was to at least get the class size to 140 for this fall. That's what I was told. I was just wondering what day exactly the approval was going to happen. It's getting late

I only had an interview at University of Western Ontario, and they sent out their offers on May. 10. UBC sent theirs out back in February. I don't know about the other Canadian dental schools.

Yeah, it sucks. The dental admissions office is going to be closed all next week. So, if there is movement off the wait list, we won't hear back until July 9th.

According to CODA's website, the earliest possible meeting they have is July 13 (for ortho) but it says that this coming Monday, July 16 is the Pre-Doc Committee meeting, which I would assume would be the day it is decided. Hopefully only a week more of waiting!

Not to burst any bubbles but I talked with the financial aid lady a couple of weeks ago and she said 120 is a yes and that if approved they would most likely only get to 140 this year.

Yes, thats what I always thought. It would be really difficult to add 40 extra students in a month. Even 20 seems like a lot but we'll see

Yeah. I'm from all the way from Vancouver Island. Never lived on the east coast before. I really want to live in Windsor Ontario, but because class is starting really quickly, I don't think I'll get my Nexus card before class starts. I don't know how the commute is like without a Nexus card.

Did a year of post-bachelor science classes that I 4.0 at Eastern Michigan. Then went to Wayne State and got my Master's in Basic Medical Science, received my degree in May, and managed a 3.5. I am very disappointed, I called the office early this morning and they said that my number on the alternate list hasn't come. I wonder how many people were interviewed for the alternate list. I just want to know if I am getting in or not. This wait is driving me NUTS. I was once assured that I was a viable candidate on the alternate list. I am hoping I will hear from them this week.

Have you received any of your TitanConnect Information? I dropped off my deposit last Thursday and received a bunch of forms and such, but none of my TitanConnect info. I talked to IT and they said that they will usually mail that stuff out, I'm just wondering if my info was forgotten in my packet or if they are mailing more stuff out. Congrats as well!

Dr. Abbott had interviewed me and i thought i did really well on the interview, then i was assured by Dr. Jeffers himself that I was in a very viable position on the alternate list and still nothing :( i am so disappointed, I really don't want to do Masters Program to improve my GPA. I think the office opens up at 9am. I hope they are not done calling people. So far we know four students are offered a seat, even if you double the number it's still 8 students. I am not losing hope. Keep praying!

Just saying, I would assume anyone being offered the seat now would be paying the deposit. The only reason anyone would decline the offer is if they are already accepted in another school and assuming Dr. Jeffers would just got to the next person on this so-called alternate list. Hopefully, you're right they are just calling a few at a time, but .... this doesn't help much I guess.

iroteaser, enough with the requesting of DAT scores and GPA, everyone who interviewed was qualified academically.

I am sure they were, I just don't get it why wasn't I offered a seat.

I graduated from UM in 2009, have been doing research since then and published some things. I believe I had at 3.3 and had a 21/21/30 for my DAT. I interviewed in late May. I was enrolled to start a Master's program in Physiology at UM in the fall and had already submitted reapplications for the 2013 cycle. I don't know if there is any way to know why you weren't offered a seat, but keep your head up and make your app better. The person I interviewed with mentioned that having a master's would have greatly improved my odds for the next time around. If you haven't already, that may be something to think about.

i have a masters and they definitely wanted to talk a lot about that during the interview
