I got the official acceptance letter in the mail this afternoon. But I live right outside of Boston, so for anywhere else it might be another day or so.

The committee met yesterday and decisions will likely be mailed out this coming Wednesday. AADSAS will probably be updated around that time too.

How was the interview? I just received the book yesterday. How thoroughly should I know this thing? I read on here it's not that important but it's really hard to imagine they'd go through that trouble for nothing.

Reading through the book and memorizing everything really isn't that necessary, but it certainly is very informative. They do talk about it a lot during the day, and they really encourage you to ask lots of questions, so reading it might give you some good areas to ask questions in.
The whole interview day isn't too stressful. Everyone is really nice and welcoming. I was a little nervous during my interview, but I think I still managed to do ok.

Ive been doing the same thing. I really we don't have to wait until 12:01 A.M. :(

edit: Just checked and a different school just changed... so I guess it does update multiple times a day and they either haven't entered it yet, or it takes aadsas forever to apply their decision.

Is anyone worried about price? I asked students about the high cost on my interview day, and they seemed pretty nonchalant and confident about being able to pay it back. As for me, I would be taking out 100% of the cost of education in loans :(

NOLAdentist2016
02-07-2012, 07:42 AM
I'm worried about it for sure, since I will be funding 100% of it myself as well. However, I'm still definitely attending Tufts. I loved the school and felt at home there. All the other schools I got accepted at were just about the same price.
Hopefully I'll get the HPSP, that would make my dreams come true and really lessen the burden. I applied for it back in September, but I'm still waiting to pass the medical pre-screen. Unfortunately no one ever talks about how strict their medical requirements are. We have to pass the same standards as people enlisting for infantry!
If I don't get the HPSP I will be sad, but I am confident that, if I am smart with money after I graduate, I can pay it off and still manage to live a nice lifestyle after a few years. It will still be hard to see upwards of 800K (after interest) go down the toilet though!

When I interviewed, I got the impression that many students had significant support from their families, and the debt was not a large worry.

Those of you accepted, what total percentage of the costs education, living expenses, (entire dental school experience) will you be taking out in loans?

100% loans here as well. Family might be able to chip in 10-15% but definitely not the whole boat. I believe the majority there are in the same situation. Didn't really get the impression that most had significant family support but that's not something I asked everyone.

If you look at the cost of attendance at most places, particularly private schools and out of state, the average is about 325K for all four years. That's the cost of dental education these days. Tufts just happens to be at the higher end of the spectrum. I think you'll be okay debt wise as long as you're not partying in Boston every night and living within your means.

If you had a cheaper option, I definitely consider it. But all my other acceptances were at schools around the same price tag so I'll pay the extra amount to experience Boston and Tufts :D

Duriel, are you looking via craigslist? and what neighborhood(s) specifically?

NOLAdentist2016
02-13-2012, 12:48 PM
I'm expecting to pay between 2000 and 2400 for a decent 2 bedroom, nothing fancy or extravagant. That seems to be the going price for "affordable" places near Tufts in Downtown, Beacon Hill or Back Bay.
My brother lives in Mission Hill, about 3.5 miles away, and pays 1400 for a 2br. It's kinda gross though and a good 20min commute, especially in the snow.

Duriel
02-13-2012, 01:13 PM
Duriel, are you looking via craigslist? and what neighborhood(s) specifically?

padmapper.com and hotpads.com. They aggregate a bunch of websites and you use the map to see where they are. I think if you want to save some money, find something along the orange/red/blue line. Orange is preferable, red and blue are easily transferable to orange. I figure an extra 10-20min commute is worth the price difference. I currently commute an hour to work everyday so I am used to it.

i asked this question earlier today because I have a March interview and apparently 100 or so seats out of 185 are deposited and they interview about 10 people a day. With all the people that got in today though and from the looks of it are going...the seat number is going to decrease :(

Hey, so when I interviewed in late january they said that they had about 75 deposits down, so I did some very rough calculations based on the numbers they gave me.

After my interview they had 2 sets of acceptances, and each set of acceptances covered 2 weeks of interviews. They interview about 16 people per day 3x a week, so that's about 100 people per acceptance wave, accept around 80% of those, so that's about 160 additional acceptances. They said that they expect around a 50% yield, so around 80 of those should place a deposit leaving 75+80=155, so with their numbers, probably around 30 spots left = 60 acceptances approximately.

Don't give up hope! Many people think that tufts is pricey and may elect to go somewhere cheaper. They will definitely tell you at your interview how many spots are open

Yes, there should be interviews both of those days. When I called to schedule my interview, my choice was between Feb. 21, 23, 24, 27, 28, and March 1. I'll be interviewing on Feb. 24th.

Hey, do you guys think living in a dorm is better than in apts? It costs 932 per a month. Where do you gonna live?
i think it might be better living in an apt than dorm. more privacy and plus you get your space of course (kitchen, bathroom). i've been searching already and found a studio in malden that i liked but im going back end of june to look around. i found some studios in allston and brighton for about $1000/mon. most ive looked at included heat/hot water. i thought they might show the dorms during the tour but they didnt so im thinking its in bad shape.

eh, I would go with malden if you're interested in a nicer neighborhood and shorter commute. Taking the T from Allston is a PAIN! The only plus to living in allston/brighton is that it's a college "town" and great bars around there. So if you have time to hit the city, it's great. Otherwise, Malden is not bad.The public transit stops around midnight

is malden a safe neighborhood? i liked it bc there was a station really close to the apt im looking at. i agree im going to stay away from the noisy areas of town.

Hey everyone congrats on the acceptances. I was waitlisted on 2/23. I am waitlisted at Columbia also. I know that Colubmia aften puts applicants on the waitlist until they have a large group and then reviews them all including the poeple who recently interviewed, I was just wondering if Tufts was similar? Is it a ranked list? My interviewer literally knew nothing about me so it was hard to have a real conversation about him aside from telling him about myself. He also had no answers to any of the questions I asked. It was not a bad interview, but he did not ask any questions about my application or history, I tried to slip some of this stuff in there but apparently I was unsuccessful. I just wonder how an interview like that affects someones chances? I cant imagine him having much to say to the adcom.

We will downsize to one car so I'm trying to find a nice family-friendly area that is near the subway/ transit lines so I can commute in. We are hoping to be within 20 minutes of downtown. Allston/Brighton perhaps, although there are a few isolated rough areas. Beware that most homes in the area are pretty old and renting a house will be fairly expensive.

anyone have any suggestions on apartments?

A lot of people live at the Metropolitan which is next door to the school - however it is pricey and usually you'll need to split between 2-3 people. There's also the Archstone which is even pricier.

Aside from that, the area around the school is rife with apartments - many of them are quite seedy.

A majority of my class did not have a car. Subway or walking will be your main modes of transportation. Having a car is certainly convenient at times, but not a necessity.

This was pretty much the case with my class as well. I was an exception as I lived in Brighton for most of the first year and then Watertown through the rest of my time at Tufts, and I had a car. I loved having a car but I also needed one because most of my outside-school activities (including some of my part time jobs) required a vehicle to get to.

The vast majority of the class lived within two miles of the school near public transport or within walking distance.

Malden is a good/ cheap place to live that you will be able to get to tufts in 20mins.
From malden, you can take the subway and it takes you to the stop called Tufts Medical Center and you'll be right at school.

If you would like to live in a home that is divided into two, (2 or bdrm apts). You can certainly find something for less than 1,200/mo.
The area is a more family area in Malden.

Yo do not need a car in boston. The public transportation is one of the best here. Since the city is not too big and they have a lot of pub trans, you can get where you need no hassle.

I think most OSS don't.

Really wanted to stay in Boston and really wanted to go to Tufts dental; here is my story:

Got accepted to BU Dec 1 (very happy then since at least I have a school to go to in Boston) but still waiting on Tufts for a interview... since u only have a month to secure a spot, I submitted a 3000 deposit to BU towards the end of december. On the SAME DAY a few days later when BU sends me a confirmation email, I got a interview invite from Tufts.

Got accepted to Tufts a week after the interview and definitely going Tufts!

Spent about another week thinking what I could of done with an extra 3 grand...

You are indeed lucky. It's going to take some planning, but I'm sure well be able to figure something out. I wonder if there are any leases that start mid August.
ive been looking already and have not found a lease that starts in august. ive only found things for sept. finding a place is going to be a headache for sure. admissions said to come around mid-end of june to look for a place.

Worse comes to worse, we can get people to pair up and share a hotel room for a few days.

I actually think staying at a hotel for a couple days will be cheaper than paying one month rent. Just my two cents......:T

Can someone give me some feedback on locations to look for a house to rent? I'm moving from Oregon with my wife and two little ones so we are hoping to rent a house instead of an apartment. We will downsize to one car so I'm trying to find a nice family-friendly area that is near the subway/ transit lines so I can commute in. We are hoping to be within 20 minutes of downtown. Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks!

I live north of Tufts in Revere with my wife. 2 other first years that are married live there as well as well as 5 second years, 4 third years and 2 fourth years. Most of them have kids. Most 1st and 2nd years aren't married or have children that go to Tufts so they live in downtown. We have enjoyed living at our complex. It is about a 30 minute commute. A bus comes straight to the complex and takes to you the Haymarket station on the orange line, (about 4 stops away from Tufts)

We don't live in a house though, its just a big apartment complex with amenities. So if you're interested you can check out their site.

Wow! At least I'm not alone...

So I plan on withdrawing my spot from BU sometimes this week, does anyone have an

idea how to do that? Do I just call the school and say I want to withdraw my app (like for

Not an easy question, but I would rate it like this:

Be cautious: Charlestown, South Boston, (Parts of the) South End

Pretty Safe: Bay Village, Back Bay, Midtown, North End

Quite Safe: Beacon Hill, Waterfront

Nonetheless, it's a city. You may get killed in Beacon Hill, but you could also never be bothered in Southie. It's unpredictable, so just be smart. I would say that in any of these places, people who mind their own business usually don't run into trouble.

I have a few questions about housing. Hopefully someone can answer.

1. Is it possible to get a August 1st or mid August lease? Everything seems to start Sept 1st. I really want to move in a few weeks early so that I can get settled before school starts.
2. If I lived in Back Bay more towards the Hynes Convention Center Stop. Do you think that's too far to walk? I think it would be a 30 minute walk. I want to be able to walk to school.

I'd say about 1.5 miles would be max walking distance. I feel like it takes forever to walk in a city, since you're always stopping to cross the street. Any farther and you're gonna spend well over an hour a day just walking to and from class. Try google maps and look at walking directions and see how long it takes.

Not playing devil's advocate, but my interviewer said he walked 2 miles to school every day (from South Boston), even in the winter, and he actually considered it his personal time, and his favorite part of the day. It wouldn't be my cup of tea, but it is one extreme, and clearly very feasible.

wow! that's such an incredible story...really puts into perspective the idea that you never know what may happen.

Just as an opinion b/c I got into Western and BU and chose Western I would say Pomona is a much nicer area to be with family. I noticed in your pre-dents profile that you have kids and I think Boston is a much harder city to raise children in. Pomona is a nice very quaint and safe area and Western is an amazing school! I know Tufts has an excellent curriculum but at the expense of distance from family plus all those flights and the hassle of moving so far away I would just stay close. Best of luck in your decision and hopefully I see you at Western next year! :)

I myself have never lived in Pomona but I am from Socal and know the area fairly well. When I visted Boston it wasn't necessarily the safest environment, pretty big city and while public transportation is great I don't knwo how often you would frequent that with two children. Pomona has its good and bad areas but so does every city. Ontario is definetely a nicer area and fairly close to the school. Its really a pictersque place and absolutely a Cali-feel if you are into that I also think the weather would be to your benefit

When I decided I really wanted to stay near family. The dental school process is hard enough let alone treading across the country. If you were going alone I would then say maybe Boston but since you have a family then in my honest opinion Pomona is the better choice.

Best of luck in your decision and keep us posted on what you decide!

tcn79, congratulations on your acceptances.

I thought I'd add my two cents.

First, from what I've read about Boston, it seems to be a great city to raise a family. I'd bet that Pomona is the same way. While neither drhygiene nor I have ever lived there, I’m assuming he’s right that Pomona has its good and bad areas. I have been up to Boston since the interview and my acceptance. It’s a big city, so there are going to be bad areas, but I found most of Boston to be very nice and safe. Family friends that we have in Boston love it, and I think all of the amazing universities being in the Boston area really add a lot of culture to the city. You're hopefully moving and going to dental school, though, in hopes of getting the best dental training. I think considering location is important, but I believe a more important consideration should be the program.

I want to be honest and say I have never seen Western or the Pomona area. Not to be in any way "look at me, look at me", but rather to give some kind of limited credibility to my opinion, I received 10 interview offers, attended 9, Tufts was the fifth school where I was accepted, and I withdrew from the rest upon my acceptance. From what I've seen during interview days and tours I've taken myself, and from the discussions I’ve had with different people in the dental profession, I believe Tufts offers some of the best clinical preparation and has one of the best facilities in the country. I also believe the faculty at Tufts, those I met at least, are very good. I wouldn’t be going there if I didn’t. I did not meet enough faculties at other schools, though, that I feel I can give a fair comparison of where Tufts ranks. The school you choose, though, is where you will be spending a large part of your time the next four years, and it will lead and shape you for your future career as a dental professional.

Building on that, I believe there's a benefit to going to a well-established school nationally with a strong alumni network for after you graduate. Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, while obviously holding a different name initially, has been around in some form since 1868. Western has yet to graduate their first class. While I understand that some people would like that opportunity to possibly shape the direction of a new program, personally I think, if possible, it’s ideal to go somewhere that has already proven able to produce top dentists.

Obviously, I’ve chosen Tufts. I want to have our class be as strong as possible, as I think that will help all of us be better. Drhygiene also had made his choice to attend Western, so he obviously hopes you attend there. I bet that Western also has a lot to offer.

Tcn79, sorry for the novel. I've just followed your situation along the way. Now, if you hear from OHSU, I think that’s a much different discussion. By the way, I’m not saying that I believe Western is a bad school. I’m simply trying to highlight the points of Tufts that I think help it to stand out from many other schools. I'd like to point out that I have told people in other situations that certain school comparisons (including those involving Tufts) are not no-brainers. I've even told people when I believed another school was a better option for them than Tufts, but I believe in this is comparison Tufts is definitely the better choice. In the end, though, the best choice is the one you believe best fits you and your family. Best of luck with your decision.

I generally agree with omnipodent however the reason I suggest Western>Tufts in this instance is because tcn79 has children and I think it would be easier for him to stay closer to home. Furthermore, I think its a big move and his kids will grow up and possibly it'd be easier to just study at Western--which is still a pretty reputable school although its in its beginning stages--and once he graduates he would be able to be closer to family etc without the hassles of another "big move". That's just my opinion.

Tufts is an incredible institution but ultimately each dental school offers each applicant something different. Western has an amazing clinical program as well with lots of opportunities in the greater Southern California area and since tcn79 is from Oregon and mentioned having family in CA I think this is highly favorable. I don't think reputation of a dental school is more important than other factors and while the training at Tufts is superb other dental schools provide much of the same. Dental schools are all held to the same standard and all are truly amazing schools...other factors like location, cost and possibly specialty placement are more important factors.

Along those lines, Tufts is also quite pricey if I remember and with kids this may not be the best route for tcn79, either way I'm sure he is talking to his wife and family and making a decision. I am not trying to sway him in any way but more listing my opinion for anyone else at present or in the future who may be in a similar situation. Best of luck to you omnipodent and tcn79 either way we are lifelong colleagues in an excellent field :)

The tuition for Western and Tufts is about the same. I'm familiar with both SoCal and Boston, and I feel like drhygiene and oimnipoDent bring up good points but they're also very biased. Both cities I'm sure are fine to raise a family in. I wouldn't say Pomona is an exceptionally safe city but Boston also has its good an bad parts. It definitely would be more difficult and more expensive to move cross country. I think in any California city you would do much more driving compared to in Boston where there isn't much parking, but better public transportation. It was a huge change for me to move here to the East Coast and it takes a while to get used to. I do love the area and I think that you could find a place that would be comfortable for your family. Remember that you could live in the suburbs around Boston, it doesn't have to be in the city. The main factors that I think it comes down to is ease of moving/time spent traveling back and forth and which school you prefer. I will say that the 6 hr flight cross country gets old quick.

hmmm omnipodent I stand corrected. touche! I thought Tufts was somewhere in the mid-$400,000 range, but they appear to both be very similar. Nonetheless, I wish tcn79 the best of luck with his decision and whatever he deems right for himself! Thanks for the enlightening evidence :)

Wow! Who knew I'd create such a debate? J/k. Honestly though, I really appreciate any and all opinions. I think both Omnipodent and Drhygiene make excellent points. We're still talking and trying to decide but I think we're leaning towards Western, not just because of location and being near family. :) I really felt like they have an excellent program and one that I will succeed in.

But really, thank you guys so much. It's very humbling that I've never met any of you and you have taken the time to share your opinions and pour your hearts out over the matter. This could be one of the most important decisions I make in life and it really means a lot to have you guys put so much effort into helping us make the best decision for our family.

It's certainly going to be hard to give up a seat at Tufts!

tcn79, no need to thank you! just trying to help a future colleague out! I wish you the best of luck and if you do choose Western I look forward to seeing you in the fall! :)

Just to throw a wrench into the works, the city of Boston around the downtown area where the school is located is not exactly the best place to raise a family. Saying that Boston is a good place to raise a family is like saying NYC is a nice place to raise a family. Most people in my class lived further out in the suburbs around Boston and commuted into town to go to school. Downtown city life is pretty hectic and with all the hustle and bustle, I wouldn't want my family there. Don't get me wrong, Boston is a great city. I plan on moving back one day. I would just rather live in the burbs and commute in for work/play.

A spot just opened up..

I withdrew my acceptance today since I got into my state school. Its a shame though because I was looking forward to living in Boston.

As soon as all my paperwork gets processed and completed by Western, I'll be withdrawing my seat so I'll be sure to let you all know when that happens. Good luck to those waiting to get in! I'm sure Tufts is an amazing school. :)

Anyone know of an individual health insurance plan that is cheaper than what the school offers? I think its 3 grand for the school year.

I had been wondering the same thing, so I went shopping around for cheaper MA health insurance last week. It seems like most other plans out there start at about $250-300/month. It's insane! It's like triple of where I currently live!
So I guess in the end its about equal to the school's plan.

Not sure if anyone else has dependents, but they're included in the tufts plan as well, which is HUGE. Most schools only cover the student and then all family members have to get their own individual plan, which ends up being ridiculously expensive.

There's definitely a convenience factor if you stick with the school insurance as well. It makes it easier just to pop into the clinic and sometimes they have other perks for dental students. At my school, you are allowed 4 free visits to the chiropractor (ie, free hour long back massages) each year and PT sessions for anything else. Ergonomics is big in d-school and they cover you in every foreseeable way. Basically, even if you do find something that's a little cheaper month to month, it probably won't compare to the services covered by Tufts and the convenience of it all.

Hey, is anyone else in this forum in the same boat as me and on the waitlist? I was wondering if anyone had any kind of insight whether they have started calling people off the waitlist, or how many seats are still available? Congrats to everyone who has gotten in already, and goodluck to those who have decided on other schools!

Does anyone know if the school offers discounts for the MBTA (subway, bus, & commuter rail) monthly pass?

You will have a chance to buy passes through Tufts for the semester that save you money over the normal passes. You can buy a semester pass for $220 and that's with a 25% Tufts discount. Monthly passes cost $45 with the discount. Tufts will send out a form once it gets closer to August.

I'm starting my first year in the fall and I found a place around 30-40 minutes commute in Newton that's incredibly cheap (500/month including utilities). This would save me around 10k a year. Would this inconvenience be worth the time traveling back and forth from school?

I just called Tufts, and a Link Pass (one that combines bus and train) is $249 / semester. Sounds like the MBTA is jacking its prices (as per usual)

Fares and monthly passes are expected to go up an average of 23 percent starting July 1st according to the MBTA Board. I stumbled upon this link, http://finance.tufts.edu/bursar/mbta-passes/, with a complete breakdown of all the routes. I would anticipate that these figures will also go up an average of 23 percent.

Congrats to all those accepted. I'm a D15 and i can say Tufts is a great school. Any school will make you work extremely hard though, and Tufts is no exception. Do not spend your summer studying, it won't help. First semester Biochem and Anatomy are your tough classes. Then Neuro second semester, and third semester is pretty much a breeze. You'll have to stay on your toes though for most of your classes (like dental anatomy which has quizzes ever week, but is not necessarily "hard") My advice is relax, enjoy your summer, find an apartment soon, and get ready for a fun orientation! Congrats again!

For those of you looking for housing, I just graduated Tufts and live on Tyler/Harvard St and looking for someone to pick up my 2bdrm/1bath lease starting Sept 1. The rent is $1400 so split btwn 2 people it would be $700 + utilities (gas+electric). It even shares a wall with Tufts so you get decent internet 90% of the time. It's Chinatown so you just have to manage your expectations. You're getting a room really close to Tufts for $700, so its not going to be the St. Regis, but it's definitely not bad.

Here are some pictures:

The bathroom tile is actually completely redone so it doesn't look so bad, and the landlord is very nice and wants to keep this affordable housing to students of Tufts. PM me if you are interested. Good luck and welcome to Tufts!
