I woke up to this on my AADSAS: "Application Denied. Application has been reviewed; committee has determined there will be no further review and is denied."

Seems pretty clear that they don't want me lol

My heart is with UW, but Penn is very attractive as well (scholarship made that possible). Not sure what I should do, but I am in the process of getting advice from several people I know.

If any of you UW students want to help me out with advice, please PM me. I would really appreciate it.

Kaylee, I'm keeping fingers crossed for you! I really hope you get in. No news is better than bad news. I'm sure you are in the considered pile if you haven't heard anything bad in the past 2 days. You might have some waiting to do since probably everything will be slow going during the holidays, so take a break from being nervous and do enjoy them, and then start checking again after the vacay. Hugs!

Invited for interview.

I just talked to someone I interviewed with on Nov. 21 with and he said he got accepted. He said they called him and they just decided that day that he got in. So I guess they have reviewed all people interviewed up until now.

So you interviewed and got accepted a few days later? Thats pretty awesome. did you hear Dec. 1?

I interviewed on Monday (the 5th), and the associate deans told us the earliest we'd know is this Thursday; another girl at the interview said a friend of her's, also get accepted only a few days after interview. So I guess it's fairly standard practice for them.

winnie bear
12-07-2011, 07:38 PM
But for those who are anxiously waiting, there may also be deviations from standard practice so don't despair. I've talked to a person who did not get called right of way so there's hope.:xf:

Kahr
12-08-2011, 07:45 AM
I didn't mean to imply fast notification was the norm, just that it isn't unusual. Sorry if that may have bothered anyone waiting.

To piggyback on what winnie bear said, I don't remember if this was said to us at our interview or on their site or something, but remember they gave out 80 or so acceptances (for 63 seats) last cycle, which means they definitely give out quite a few acceptances that aren't taken, and then those go on to others waiting to hear, even more reason to keep hope!

I applied for it, still waiting to hear back post-interview. I actually didn't know I was eligible until I interviewed (had to update/revise my app with Kathy once I got home), because their previous policy was only WA residents could participate, but now it's open to all.

I believe 8 students are selected for RIDE, though I could be wrong.

63 students are admitted each year to the class. 8 are selected from this group for the RIDE program. There often are more than 8 that show interest in this program so this could be a selction proces also . On your app, it absolutely does not make any difference if you show Ride as a preference for your chances of getting an interview

I think it's been established that 8 people get into the Ride Program.

I applied to RIDE as well as the Seattle campus program. Funny the RIDE page doesn't explicitly state the number of spaces available, though I understand that UW continues to increase the number each year.
I am hoping to get picked for RIDE for the great experience of working in community clinics, though the job outlook in Spokane is pretty grim. (My spouse will be supporting us through my dental education - not an inconsiderable issue.)

Sorry, not trying to make you guys panic or anything. Like kaye1der, when I spoke to Kathy a couple weeks ago I was told they were trying to make final decisions by mid-march, which would be now. They must be in the process of notifying.

By the way, Kahr, I believe we interviewed the same day, 12/5. You had the glasses correct? Hope we all hear good news...

EDIT: since people usually like to know how, my AADSAS portal status was changed to waitlisted last friday.

Yes, I had glasses, I was also the only one from Hawaii there, so I'm sure that would narrow it down a fair bit. ;) I'm glad you at least got waitlisted, better than a rejection by far. I hope we hear some more news soon, I'm anxious to get this over with one way or the other.

At least you guys received the news. I am still in the dark! Last year, as I heard from someone on the forum, the copy machine broke and couldn't get rejection letters out on time. I hope that's not the case!!!! I'm trying very hard to be optimistic but it's getting harder and harder everyday. I waited several months, I can wait for 2-3 more days!!! Cross fingers for all of you. UW is awesome and it will be such an honor to be a part of their dental school!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, I had glasses, I was also the only one from Hawaii there, so I'm sure that would narrow it down a fair bit. ;) I'm glad you at least got waitlisted, better than a rejection by far. I hope we hear some more news soon, I'm anxious to get this over with one way or the other.

Who were you by the way?

I thought the "asian" guy with spiked hair (I forgot his name...think it started with an S) was also from Hawaii. But I was one of the guys who happened to be interviewing with his friend, I was the one with the dark hair, I was initially sitting across from you when we first walked in talking to the other interviewee from Alabama? Or somewhere? I was in the second round of interviews.

:luck::xf: to all of us

I called on Friday. Kathy said the committee was going to meet in two weeks and it was hopefully going to be the last time. So anyone waiting still (like me) will hear then. They have filled the class so any news now will either be wait list or a rejection.

Any Washington residents receive their site preference yet?

I've heard of the pre-matriculation program...but I don't know anything about it except that it exists. I haven't quite gotten any of my official paperwork, so maybe that's why I don't know anything about it. Could someone fill me in?

Prematriculation (PreMat) Program

A Summer Enrichment Program for

Students Transitioning Into Medical And Dental School

Each summer, the Office of Educational Partnerships and Diversity in the School of Dentistry, and the Office of Multicultural Affairs in the School of Medicine sponsors a Prematriculation Program (PreMat) for entering medical and dental students from educationally or financially disadvantaged backgrounds. The goal of the program is to facilitate students’ transition to medical or dental school by providing academic and social support. PreMat is especially helpful to students who have been away from an intensive academic program, because it provides a preview of the medical and dental school environment and curriculum. The major course of study during the program is Histology. Students receive intensive histology instruction for five weeks and take a challenge exam at the end of the five weeks. Students who pass will receive credit for HuBio 510 (Histology) in the fall.

Program Activities & Schedule

Histology lectures are held daily in the morning; a lab with organized review and tutorial sessions are held Tuesday and Thursday in the early afternoon. Other activities include: sessions on study and test-taking skills, stress management; health disparities, service learning; and meetings with school deans, counselors curriculum managers, and current medical and dental students. There are occasional evening and weekend sessions.

Cost & Housing

There are no tuition costs to participate in the Prematriculation program. PreMat participants are responsible for required texts and their room and board while in Seattle.

Faculty

Histology instruction is given by faculty from the UW Departments of Biological Structure and Physiology. Second-year medical and dental students serve as teaching assistants and facilitate the lab and tutorial sessions.

Networking

As mentioned above, there are no tuition costs for participating in this program. In exchange, we expect that PreMat participants will network with the pre-med/pre-dental undergraduate and the high school students who are participating in our other summer enrichment programs - the Summer Medical/Dental Education Program (SMDEP) and the UDOC high school program. There will be scheduled networking sessions as well as a session with Dr. Acosta on good networking skills.

Program Dates

The 2012 Prematriculation Program will be held from June 18th through July 20th, 2012. Sessions will be held at the University of Washington Magnusson Health Sciences Center in Seattle. Attendance is required at all sessions. Participants should expect to spend six or more hours a day in sessions. We highly discourage students from being involved in employment or other outside activities during the five weeks of the program.

Eligibility

Students who have been accepted to the University Of Washington School Of Medicine or School of Dentistry, who come from economically and/or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds, or who have spent a significant time away from academic study, are encouraged to apply.

To Apply

Submit a letter of application by May 18th 2012. In your letter please: 1) state that you are interested in participating in the 2012 PreMat Program; 2) state how you would benefit from participating, 3) state what you feel you can contribute to your peers in the program, and 4) describe how you can contribute to networking with undergraduate and high school students who are interested in health care professions.

Yes. I already sent my email/letter a week ago, since Memory wrote to "drop her an email soon" instead of waiting close to the May 18th due day. Good luck!
