View Full Version : Should I expect?
Anatom 12-26-2011, 11:06 AM Hello pals
I applied in mid Nov. for a pathology residency in 15 programs.
I already got one interview (Jan 12), 9 rejections (only after I asked directly about my status) and 5 ingnorances...
Two programs not even opened my application as I saw in the "track" function in myeras...
My questions are:
1. Should I still expect to get more interviews?
2. Does someone work between Dec 24th and Jan 1st?
3. Is it common to get "last minute" inteviews?
Thanks for those who can help... :)

I would not expect any more interviews at this point. Maybe ONE, if you're very lucky.
You applied in MID NOVEMBER?!? That is ridiculously late. Applying that late is the kiss of death, and that is why a lot of programs have ignored your application. Why did you apply so late??
Anatom 12-26-2011, 11:40 AM Well, I am a FMG and got my ECFMG accreditization only on early Nov. and that's why I applied so late.
Is it common to be invited for an interview in the last minute (after someone cancel his arrival)?
Should I expect something new in this week, or perhaps everybody is on vication?
Actually, I feel lucky for the interview I already got... :-)
b-real 12-26-2011, 01:41 PM In general most offices will be closed until after the new year (either Jan. 2 or 3).
mlw03 12-27-2011, 04:39 AM will answer below. i am a pathologist. To put it bluntly, your chances of matching this application cycle are not good. Apply much, much earlier next year, and much, much more broadly. 15 programs for an FMG, unless your board scores are >240 for steps 1 and 2, is far too few to give yourself a shot at matching, especially if you're from a non-English speaking country.

2. Does someone work between Dec 24th and Jan 1st? Maybe, but doubt the residency commitees are meeting during this time
3. Is it common to get "last minute" inteviews? Common, definitely not. Does rarely happen though.

U applied late and to very few programs. There wont be a next time...but it is worth pointing out that u didnt need ECFMG certificate to apply....u shd have applied earlier on with pending certification. Go and rock that one interview...sometimes that is all that we need
Buzz Me 12-27-2011, 07:58 PM As stated already, you need to apply much earlier, and much more broadly.
Winged Scapula 12-28-2011, 10:45 PM To answer your question:
it is unlikely that you will get any more invitations to interview at this late date. Most offices will be closed or not having interview meetings until after the first of the year. Is it possible that if someone cancels they could call and invite you? Sure, but I wouldn't count on it.
As others have said, next year apply earlier and to more programs. Most FMGs apply to nearly every program available.
myhandsarecold 12-29-2011, 11:49 PM i thought path goes unfilled every year? depending on where you applied, unlikely will get anymore. go through the SOAP this march, you just might get lucky.

Some programs don't fill via match, but not too many unfilled spots that I know of. If anything, path is getting a bit more competitive, with higher numbers of American MD and DOs applying and matching.
Top Gun 01-03-2012, 09:51 PM Dude, the reason I didn't match the first time is because, like you, I made the dumb mistake of applying late (I applied in mid-to-late October), and to too few programs. As a result, I only got 6 interviews and didn't match that year. The following year, when I had my application submitted by September 3, and to a larger number of programs. I got a lot more interviews and matched that time. Moral of the story, apply early, and if you're an IMG, to a lot of programs.
