congratulations! that's awesome!
would you mind sharing your stats?
giants25 07-19-2012, 02:47 PM Sure. 3.38 cGPA, 3.47 sGPA, 4.00 graduate GPA in BU's MAMS program (SMP), 35S MCAT (36S composite), top 15 school. Lots of volunteering, research, shadowing, and leadership.
I think what helped was writing a very mission centered secondary about the Camden community.
EDIT:reapplicant also in 2011, but not to Cooper
Interview invite! Thank God!

DrTrilla 07-20-2012, 02:21 PM Can anyone help me figure this out:
Cooper's website states that they don't take AP credits. But upper level classes can take the place of AP credits. However they also add all science courses used to satisfy a prereq must have a lab component.
I have AP credits for biology, but have many upper level bio courses to replace my AP credits. But none of those courses really have a lab component... Am I screwed or what.

I would just say as an explanation that you plan on taking a course with a lab before you matriculate.. and then if you get an interview make sure you sign up for a science class with a lab.
soon2bedoctor 07-21-2012, 09:15 PM Does anybody know how important the recommended two semesters of Spanish are for Cooper? Will they look unfavorably at my app if I don't have this?
has anyone heard this week?
xrealityx 08-01-2012, 09:19 PM Does anybody know how important the recommended two semesters of Spanish are for Cooper? Will they look unfavorably at my app if I don't have this?
I hate dumb questions like this. Cooper is definitely going to not accept someone with a 36/4.0 who is personable & passionate because they didn't take the two suggested semesters of Spanish...
shyluvagyal 08-04-2012, 07:48 AM Hm, has anyone out of state received an interview? I really like this school!! They screen secondaries right?
NeuroticByN8ure 08-04-2012, 01:03 PM On the MSAR it says that they screen, but I don't think that there is much of one; I received a secondary first thing in the morning after I was verified.
I'm OOS too and good luck!
pasiley 08-08-2012, 08:50 AM Just received a re-jection email. OOS. Complete 22nd. :(
I'll give them a call and find out why because this school's mission really appealed to me.

SU1989 08-09-2012, 05:23 AM Does anyone know how many seats are there for the inaugural class?
metaphase 08-09-2012, 05:26 AM I'm excited to interview here! My first invite. (OOS)
Any current students want to give us a heads-up on how the school seems so far?
Hopeful55 08-09-2012, 06:18 AM Metaphase, you mind sharing your stats? Thanks!
Wiggins 08-09-2012, 10:52 AM Does anyone know how many seats are there for the inaugural class?
The inaugural class had 50 seats. I think this years class (for those applying now) will have 60 seats. They are going to keep adding 10 seats a year until they hit 100 per class.
I'm excited to interview here! My first invite. (OOS)

Orientation doesn't actually start until next Monday so I can't give you to much inside as of yet. The administration seems pretty on top of things. They have been really responsive on questions and such.
I used SDN last year to get essay questions and it was really helpful, so I figured I would join and actually contribute something to the site.
YouNeverKnow22 08-09-2012, 10:56 AM did you guys get rejected pre or post secondary? I added them on my primary but haven't heard a peep...I was verified mid June.

Strange, Ive been complete for a while, with significantly better stats and in-state, and haven't heard a word!
I guess they're taking LoR and such into account significantly in the interview-offer process.

I am in-state, but had to travel to Philly for work from North Jersey. Philly hotels are usually more expensive. I stayed in Cherry Hill and commuted to Philly (via Camden) daily.
avodemas 08-20-2012, 01:45 PM AMCAS verified this morning, secondary received this afternoon.
Courtjester8 08-23-2012, 05:25 PM This is a really quiet thread. Let me ask this...was anyone else blown away by the description of Cooper's curriculum? I have to say I'm interested in how parts of it will work in practice.

It's a new school and in Camden lol a few more years will give it added credit.
cheese123 08-23-2012, 09:55 PM are secondaries only sent after the mcat score is received? i have not received the secondary yet, but my mcat score has not been released yet and they just received my last letter of recommendation. thanks!

I think secondaries are sent out automatically as soon as they receive your verified AMCAS.
JJJJUUUU 08-26-2012, 08:40 PM Can anyone comment about the environment of Camden and the safety of the city?

The numbers speak for themselves. It is not a safe city. I would not advise you to live there. I am sure there is enough security on campus but I'd be careful venturing out.

People applying to this school probably also applied to schools like temple and Jefferson... North Philly is a pretty scary place to live as well. Only consolation is that there are really nice places to live right outside Camden (like cherry hill, although more expensive).
AppleBeater 08-29-2012, 07:09 PM I'm interviewing November 30th! Is anyone else going then?
I hope it's not too late by then. It'll almost be December :(

qwerty2012 09-09-2012, 11:21 AM oh lord, this school seems very selective. What is the entering class profile for 2016? Does anyone know? Camden isn't actually that selective depending on where.
Shere 09-13-2012, 03:12 PM oh lord, this school seems very selective. What is the entering class profile for 2016? Does anyone know? Camden isn't actually that selective depending on where.
CMSRU is extremely service-oriented. High GPA/MCAT is obviously a major benefit for interviews and acceptances, but service is a big, big deal. (I'm part of the 2016 class, btw, just for reference.) It's a huge part of the school's entire motto. There are quite a few OOSers here in the first class, so that's also not exactly a make-or-break deal. A few from California, some from up in the New England area, etc. Mostly IS, but it's a good mix.
Also, for those worrying about safety and such, don't let it sway your opinion too much. Sure, Camden's not exactly known for it's lack of crime, but the area the hospital and school are in is one of the nicer places in the city, and as long as you're just as vigilant as you would be at any other school within a city like Philly or New York, even, you should be fine. My cousin and Aunt have both worked at Cooper for years, and there have never been any criminal incidents in that area involving any of the hospital staff.
Just don't go trying to buy drugs or anything at a street corner or walk the streets late at night, and you should be fine. Also, whenever I walk around outside I always see some sort of cop or security personnel, so it makes you feel safer.
If you guys have any questions about the curriculum and such, feel free to ask. I'll try to explain what's going on here at CMSRU so far to the best of my ability. :) It's a really awesome program, to be honest, I'm glad I chose this school.
Amazingmuzmo 09-13-2012, 09:45 PM .
ragnarokx 09-14-2012, 08:33 AM I received my II 8/10, one day after I sent in my secondary. Please also know that I have volunteered at the hospital since I began high school (looong before there was a med school and have put in over 500 hours) and had a nice letter of recommendation from my time working there. My secondary focused on the community aspect of Camden and how working in Camden during my time volunteering has impacted my view of medicine.
To those with a service oriented application, I think Cooper will definitely consider you a strong applicant, just stay patient!
My stats: 3.5cGPA, 3.5 sGPA, 32 MCAT, instate
I have similar stats and got an II a week ago. OOS, and I've been involved in a lot of volunteering and philanthropy since 2008.

they do seem to stress very highly the display of community service. that is a very admirable aim for a school to have. good luck to everyone that got II's.

giants25 09-22-2012, 12:20 PM At the first interview day they said they already had received 10 times as many applications as interviews they give out. So I'm guessing that's 3000+ applications they are trying to review right now. They're probably just really busy.

giants25 09-27-2012, 12:35 PM It's because they've filled up all the spots before that. Since they're only offering about 300 interviews this year, your interviewing at the tail end of the application season. And since they only want 50 people for the class, a lot of spots won't open till people start withdrawing their seats.

TheSchnugg 10-15-2012, 07:15 AM First post on SDN, couldn't keep myself from writing something as this thread is so quiet. Has anyone heard about acceptances yet? Did they send the midnight email like they did last year or have they just not started contacting people? Interviewed here in September and sitting on pins and needles!

I'm wondering the same thing! I interviewed here on the 14th, and I remember them saying we should hear today if are accepted. Don't know when we will hear if we are waitlisted or rejected!
nighthawk4900 10-15-2012, 07:54 AM Had my interview last Friday (oct 12). They have a pretty legit setup over there, especially for a brand new school. Everything just smells so... New!
The deans, faculty, and students we interacted with were very friendly, and they certainly went out of their way to sell the school to you. For all that Camden is cracked up to be, they certainly stick out with their magnificent infrastructure.
Top of the line technology and a strong emphasis on active group learning (they only have 6hrs of lecture PER WEEK!) are two of the most attractive qualities, and the students seem to love the ALGs as well. I wasn't too sure of ALG/PBL till I heard it from them, but here students are placed into groups of 8 (groups made based on brigg Myer and similar analyses) and given two facilitators, an MD and basic science PhD, to guide discussion if it goes the wrong way.
If you guys have any questions let me know :)
They said it would take atleast 3 weeks to hear back, so nothing to look forward to for today from here, but they said they review every Friday's interviewees the following Wednesday. Forgot to ask how they notify us though :(
wagmanager 10-16-2012, 03:51 AM for those who interviewed here in September, when did they say we should hear back ?
Zelia 10-16-2012, 04:42 AM I thought they said the second half of October... I guess that's not very helpful at the moment!

kud100 10-18-2012, 12:43 PM The interview was great. Everyone there is so friendly and lovely to be around. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming and the building was gorgeous. Don't stress out too much about the "clinical scenarios"- they are VERY straightforward. And you are not required to have ANY medical experience. It was a very painless process :)

Cuongoff 10-18-2012, 04:05 PM Do you guys think it'll be too late for me to add this school? How strong is their in-state preference? How's the area around the school?
bradycardia 10-18-2012, 10:54 PM I just registered to say I am OOS student who was accepted today! I interviewed last Friday (Oct 12th) and found out today!

Did the letter mention anything about acceptance chances or being in a priority wait list vs. a regular one? They had that last year but perhaps this year it is different.
nighthawk4900 10-19-2012, 05:37 PM It just said it was a regular list, and that it'd probably be till April or may till they dip into the list :/

what were both your stats??? and do you have any idea why you got rejected pre-interview?
doctorwho101 10-23-2012, 02:44 PM Also rejected yesterday via a terribly worded email. I think I was more upset about the grammar and apparent lack of caring in the email than I was about getting rejected, so I guess I'm not that upset!
Complete 9/29, stats are in MDApps. Good luck to the rest of you!
cheese123 10-23-2012, 06:42 PM o definitely. always an optimist.

Also, are there 2 interviews for CMSRU--traditional and OSCE?
Thanks!

Osce are mmi. You should be able to click on a link somewhere for coopers description of theirs. And the traditional yes is separate from osce.

They must have had some withdrawals because I was able to schedule for Nov 30th, so I didn't even look at Feb.
askamsky51 11-07-2012, 09:18 AM Damn! I wish I could move my interview up. Do you think they would be receptive if I sent an email asking if there are any sooner dates? I'm very excited about this school and would love to interview asap.

probably- I'd just call and ask if there have been any earlier openings- I am guessing that as folks are accepted to schools higher on their lists more slots will open.
askamsky51 11-07-2012, 09:22 AM I may do that, I just don't want to be perceived as annoying or pushy.

CorgiDoctor 11-08-2012, 09:20 AM I just got a rejection email too, pretty shocked because I put a lot of effort into this secondary and really loved this school. Oh well. Good luck to everyone left!
Cuongoff 11-08-2012, 09:29 AM I got a rejection pre-interview as well. Sad.
prada2012 11-10-2012, 07:48 PM Do you have a feel for Cooper's requirements for minimum GPA/MCAT? Do they give any preference to the IS candidates?
prada2012 11-14-2012, 08:22 PM Why is this thread so quite? no response from Cooper? I am getting anxiety attack
goldencask14 11-15-2012, 02:02 PM Anyone hear back from Cooper this Thursday from last week's interview?
Flourocarbon 11-15-2012, 02:04 PM No Did you understand that we would know today?
goldencask14 11-15-2012, 02:12 PM I wasn't sure, but I thought I heard that... and then I saw a quick turnaround from some previous posts about being accepted... what was your understanding?
gophillies804 11-15-2012, 02:14 PM I was told we'd hear today as well. That's what Dr. McGeehan said.
Flourocarbon 11-15-2012, 02:17 PM I understood we would hear today

theduderino 11-16-2012, 09:44 AM yup. just got rejected :(. This was one of my top choices, so there's a little bit of sting in this one. Congrats to all those who got accepted!

I got an email saying I'd hear after the holiday.
bortenson 11-26-2012, 01:33 PM So, I was placed on the wait list a few weeks ago, but I didn't really read the email thoroughly out of disappointment. Went back and read it today, and this stuck out tome:
"Most established schools accept between two and three times the class size to fill each class. They can do this because they have years of experience that have led them to know the number of students who elect to attend another school. As a new school, we do not have that opportunity and we cannot have more than 60 students in our first class. This limits our opportunity to extend a full admit status.I expect we will go to our waitlist in 2013.
Please understand that our Admissions Committee knows that you resonate with our mission and will thrive in our curriculum because by having you in our wait list category means that you have been accepted contingent on the decisions made by those granted a full accept decision."
Anyone have any thoughts on this? Does this sound like a "priority waitlist" situation? Or is it just pretty words to make us feel better about ourselves? The school seemed pretty honest, so I wouldn't be surprised if they did have a priority waitlist that was pretty much "If you're still interested in April, you'll probably get in, but we can't hand out too many acceptances because we don't know how many will choose to matriculate."
Thoughts?

I too was placed on the waitlist a couple weeks ago.
I'm not sure if there is a "priority waitlist" this year, or what kind of movement on the waitlist we will ultimately see. From last year's thread there definitely was a priority waitlist as indicated in some applicants waitlist email. However, it appears that at least a couple of those priority waitlists never turned into full acceptances. Was probably a huge bummer for those applicants...perhaps the admissions committee dropped the priority waitlist language as not to be too misleading...who knows?
What this means for us, i think, is entirely up in the air. We have no idea how many people offered full acceptances will actually attend. Hopefully we will see some movement. I would love the opportunity to attend to Cooper!
On a related note, does any know if the admissions committee is receptive to update letters and such?

I had the same email... the wording almost makes you think that since "having you in our wait list category means that you have been accepted contingent on the decisions made by those granted a full accept decision...," they are saying that they aren't giving "full accept" decisions to any more people??
That would be interesting

What did your letter say specifically?
member14823 11-27-2012, 01:48 PM You have been put on the priority wait list of Cooper Medical School of Rowan University. Most established schools accept between two and three times the class size to fill each class. They can do this because they have years of experience that have led them to know the number of students who elect to attend another school. As a new school, we do not have that opportunity and we cannot have more than 60 students in our first class. This limits our opportunity to extend a full admit status.
Our Admissions Committee has chosen to have you in a select small number of applicants that will be the first to be offered a position as seats open. Cooper Medical School of Rowan University knows that you resonate with our mission and will thrive in our curriculum. Your academic accomplishments speak for themselves. Your overall application including the personal statement, the secondary application, and the letters of recommendation made it easy to offer you an interview because of the path you chose in these past few years. Interview day allowed us to meet you, to see you at the bedside via the standardized patient encounters and to get to know you through the eyes of our faculty.
marcusAurelius1 11-27-2012, 02:11 PM i am on the "high priority waitlist"
Evidently there is a priority waitlist after all. This is probably a pretty decent position to be in...
Can't even speculate what it means for us regular waitlist folks however. I guess we'll all just have to...wait...and see...
Good luck to everyone!
mango1 11-27-2012, 04:38 PM Hi All,
I am new to this and have an interview at cooper coming up and was wondering if anyone could give me some insight into what the two five-minute clinical setting parts are like.
Thank you!
bortenson 11-28-2012, 10:05 AM Can't even speculate what it means for us regular waitlist folks however.

Based on absolutely nothing but my own intuition, I would assume that people on the high priority waitlist will start receiving offers in the near future. Additionally, if you stay on the high priority wait list until April you will have essentially a 100% chance of an admissions offer. Us under-qualified gutter peons on the regular wait list have a much lower chance, and have no chance of hearing until March/April. Though, based on the wording (and the fact that the school seemed very honest and open) I would be surprised if at least a few people didn't get in off the normal wait list.
Eokpar02 11-28-2012, 05:47 PM Hey guys. I have an interview in February and I would really, really like some advice on how to master it. To those who were successfully admitted, do you have any words of advice? Do stats matter after being given an interview?

Don't worry about those; they're really easy and obvious answers, no medical skills required. Just use your common sense and you'll be fine

Let your sincerity show through, as in any interview. Show your humane attributes. At least that's what I think they're all about which is what makes this school great.
togaedere 11-29-2012, 04:29 PM Sorry to interject here but I've been following the Cooper application this cycle. I interviewed last year in November and was priority waitlisted but never got accepted. I know there were at least a handful of other people in my situation from last year's cycle. Of course, that was a year where the school only accepted 50 people.
I was accepted elsewhere and am happy to be attending my school but I keep following Cooper (and other schools) because (1) the admission process is fascinating to me and (2) I'm curious as to how the mission at Cooper pans out in the long term (I have a feeling it's going to be a really great institution which is cool to watch even from afar).
I didn't want to chime in to be a downer but it's tough to talk in terms of 100 percent chances.

wanderedtoolong 12-06-2012, 05:25 PM nada.
wanderedtoolong 12-07-2012, 08:33 AM tempted to call and ask what's up- will give them until 2pm or so and then maybe inquire- I don't think they understand how crazy it makes us when they tell us we will hear on a particular day and then it doesn't happen.
119004613 12-07-2012, 02:22 PM I interviewed Nov 30th and got accepted yesterday. They said that decisions are determined the following Wednesday night and candidates are notified on Thursday. Sometimes they do not finish reviewing everyone in one night, so they give themselves an additional week to decide and notify. They get back very quickly and made it a clear priority not to leave candidates in limbo. hope that helps!

thanks for that info- I also interviewed the 30th and thought I had a great shot - my interviewer told me he would be presenting my file to the committee and recommending me "without reservations" but who knows what happens once the file is before the committee. Hopefully they just didn't get to me yet.

Would you mind giving me an estimate of how many mmi scenarios they give you and how long you spend on each? Also, how long is the interview with the 2 interviewers?
bamboozlenator 12-16-2012, 04:11 PM I interviewed at Cooper this past Friday, and I was so impressed I felt the need to make a username for SDN to write about it. I'm not sure where to start-it's just such a unique school, and everything they do they seem to know exactly why they're doing it. Everything from their teaching style, to their community involvement, they seem to be doing everything right. They certainly do many things very different from nearly any medical school I've looked at-but I came away thinking the way they are doing things is the way other schools SHOULD be doing things! I was impressed at how much emphasis they put on making sure their students stay happy-even putting a second wall outside the anatomy lab so that they could have an 'exterior' facing wall and let natural light into the lab, to try to make it a happier environment....! They truly think of everything at that school, and the staff was simply amazing! Everyone was so relaxed, and informative. They didn't try to intimidate me at all, and the entire process felt unbelievably personable. Furthermore the facilities are unbelievable...you will be hard-pressed to find a medical school with all around top-notch resources like Cooper.
Altogether it was an immensely enjoyable experience. I was already intrigued by the school going into it, as it looked very interesting and unique on paper, but after my interview day experience I was simply blown away by it, and haven't been able to stop talking about it since. If you have a scheduled interview with them coming up, my biggest advice would be to relax, and go into it with a positive attitude. They want you to be yourself, and they want to see your real personality. Don't try to fake it, or give them a fake personality that you think they would like-just be yourself, and have fun with it! I hope I'm fortunate enough to get in, Cooper certainly seems to have a bright future ahead of it!
wanderedtoolong 12-16-2012, 04:15 PM Did they mention when you might be hearing from them? Still waiting from 2 weeks ago- wondering if they'll be reviewing files this week.
bamboozlenator 12-16-2012, 09:24 PM Yes, they said that they would be reviewing files Wednesday night, and would get back to us Thursday. However, they said that if we don't hear from them on Thursday not to worry as sometimes they can't review all the files in one night, as they like to spend time reviewing each candidate as a committee, and will continue the next time they review files. So no worries!

I've been in since October and I have to second this. I was a little iffy on the school going in but having interviewed, the place is amazing. They really seem to care about their students and the curriculum is exactly what I'd design if I were making a med school curriculum. The newsletter they send out is adorable. It's like a liberal arts school but medicine.

That's really nice to hear, bamboozlenator and niki9. Thank you for your posts! I'm very excited to be interviewing at Cooper next month. What newsletter are you referring to? And why are you so excited by the curriculum? What are your thoughts regarding the breadth of clinical experience? What kind of exciting opportunities do students have to experience all the different facets of medicine? Do you get the sense that it's geared towards students who are primarily interested in public health or addressing the needs of indigent populations? Sorry for my many questions. Thanks!!

Does anyone know if it is feasible to go to this school while living in philly?
bamboozlenator 12-17-2012, 04:34 PM @slothster don't apologize, all are great questions! I'll try to answer as best as I can (/as best as I interpreted things myself). The curriculum is very different from what you come across at most schools-I would recommend going to their website to look it up. I'll give you a quick overview though. First, they only have 6 hours of lecture a week. Yes, 6 hours. They have approached what is called 'flip-learning', which essentially I took away as the idea that you learn more practicing than being lectured to. It was founded by some hedge-fund man who found it more effective to give his daughter a ten minute brief lesson on a subject matter, and then having her go to school and working out problems-engaging and asking questions. Essentially "flipping" the normal status quo, where one is lectured in school, then does work at home. This allows the student to do the work in an environment where there is someone who can answer questions, etc. They facilitate this by having 6 hours of what is called an Active Learning Group (ALG) a week. These groups are super neat-for their inaugural class there are I believe 6 groups of 7 and one of 8 students. They make all the students take two different personality tests, and from these results they form the ALG groups, trying to make sure not one of the students in a group has the same personality. They have said the feedback from students has been amazingly positive, and not a single person has requested to switch groups. In these ALGs, you are given different cases, which you then work as a group to solve, using knowledge you've gained from lecture, reading, etc. These can range from medical to ethical cases. There's a supervisor/facilitator in the room as well in case anyone has questions. The rooms each group meets in are very spacious, and each has a smart board and white board. These groups help you to work through things yourselves, which I have always found to be the most efficient way of learning. I went to a Montessori grade school from k-6th grade, which has a similar learning style as this, and I found it remarkably helpful, and formative. Students can play off each others strengths and weaknesses, and you learn to work as a group, and problem solve.
Throughout all four years, starting right from week 3 you have something called an ambulatory clerkship (you can look this up on their website as well, go to curriculum map and you can select any section for more information). You form teams, with 2 phase 1 and 2 phase 2 students making up a team, and this is where you do all of your clinical experience. So yes, you will be getting clinical experience starting the first year.
Lastly, I think it's somewhat I like that. I think it is really a school for students who want to be interactive in their community more than anything else. It's not a school where you can simply go to class, then go home and study. They want you to interact with the population, and understand the relationship that can exist between a medical school and the city it is in (which is shown by the requirement of 40 hours of non-medical community service required each year. Anything from coaching a local team, to helping out in a school class, etc.). The citizens don't just learn from the students, the students also learn from the citizens. I wouldn't say it's only for students interested in public health or indigent populations, but it certainly is aimed at making sure its students are not only aware of their surroundings, but involved with them as well.
I hope that helps slightly...I'm sure they'll do a much better job explaining it all at your interview. It's kind of hard to really explain it all accurately on paper, but once you get to your interview, meet with the faculty and staff, and see the facility, and feel the environment, you'll really get it, and that's when you'll know if it's for you or not! But definitely scour their website over and over, I found that the more I looked over it, the more I found different things and programs they had that were unique and exciting! Hope that helps, and if you have any other questions, don't be afraid to ask!
@jollybengali I think nearly half of the students live in a complex in Camden called the Victor. It's a little expensive, but very nice, safe, and close to the school. A good portion also live at home, as they are from the area. However, one of the students I spoke with lived in Philly, and she said she had no problem commuting from her place to school. So yes, I would say it is certainly feasible. But I would advise you to ask the students when you are there who live in Philly for more information-they are all super friendly and I'm certain would tell you all about their experiences!
Anyways, congrats to you both! Good luck with your interviews, and I hope that helped somewhat.
Eokpar02 12-18-2012, 05:34 AM I had my interview on the 14th. The facilities are extremely nice and I had pleasant conversations with the fellow interviewees. The initial interview seemed particularly useless. The second interview was about my personal experiences. They liked the fact that I shadowed, volunteered, both in hospitals and outside hospitals. I had an interview with a single individual, not multiple.
I am on my knees praying that I get accepted.

That was something I did not understand- pretty sure the dean said it would be two separate interviews, one open file, one blinded. I had one interview with both interviewers simultaneously asking me questions lol.
I think I would have preferred it to be separate :/
niki9 12-18-2012, 09:37 AM That's really nice to hear, bamboozlenator and niki9. Thanks!!
@slothster don't apologize, all are great questions! I have very little to add to what bamboozlenator said. They seem to really care about the students who seem ridiculously happy. They are seriously the most upbeat med students I've talked to so far. Cooper schedules various activities weekly like yoga, nutrition classes...etc to help their students be as healthy as possible. No other school I interviewed at really seemed to stress this as much as cooper did.
The program itself is very interactive with the small groups. They have scheduled time for research each year (week I think). You're in the hospital early on. You interact with the patient population early. I did a summer as a public health intern at lourdes (a different hospital in camden) and you really come to care about the city. I want to go into public health/infectious disease and I think Cooper is set up very well for that given the populations and problems in the city. I know they are also committed to primary care. I think though, given Camden, you could pretty much get amazing training in anything you want to do. I've shadowed at Cooper itself and got to see surgery, trama, peds, radiology...etc. It seriously is a great place and you'll definitely see action.
They email out a newsletter to the campus and include accepted students. It's kind of adorable. They talk about students who run marathons or grow mustaches for movember. PM me if you want me to forward it. Other schools probably do this too, but I have yet to get a newsletter from drexel (not to hate on drexel, my friend may be going there.)
Sorry for the not terribly well written post.

niki & bamboozlenator, thank you for your very thorough responses! I definitely will spend a lot more time reviewing Cooper’s website; something I am ashamed to not have done since completing the secondary…
The emphasis on student satisfaction and the quality of the facilities are two big pluses! I also really like the fact that it’s a small class (50, right?). It would also be fulfilling to be a part of such a new school given the great and untapped opportunities for leadership, etc.
Thanks again!
jollybengali 12-18-2012, 11:02 AM Does anyone know what the rule is for getting in-state tuition in NJ? My parents have a house in NJ, and I have a NJ driver's license, but I currently live in NY. Could I still qualify for NJ in-state tuition? What would I have to submit to qualify?
bamboozlenator 12-18-2012, 11:38 AM @slothster no shame, after secondaries are all in you kind of take a break for a while and then start researching schools more in depth again as they come up-it's good to take a little time off from the grind! I know I did! As for the class size-their inaugural class is 50 students, and then each year they will be adding ten students to the incoming class size (60,70,80,etc.) until they reach a class size of 100, which is what they will maintain for each class after that.
@jollybengali here is a link to a rutgers admissions website that outlines the way residency works as far as declaring it for in-state tuition: http://admissions.rutgers.edu/costs/tuitionandfees/njtuitioneligibility.aspx.
In short, are you living in NY because you are a student, or are you working there? If you are a student then I see no reason why you wouldn't qualify as in-state upon your return, but if you are living and working in NY independently, then I think you will have to establish residency for 12 months before you can apply for in-state tuition. So assuming you move to NJ before August of your first year, you could presumably apply for it your second year on (what I will be planning on doing if I get in!). Hope that helps/isn't wrong!

This is unfortunately untrue- as with many state schools (except the NY State system and maybe a few others) Cooper said you have to move to NJ a year before matriculation in order to be deemed a resident for tuition purposes EVER.
bamboozlenator 12-18-2012, 02:23 PM Drats, I should have read that more carefully, you are correct. I suppose that makes more sense-otherwise everyone would be in-state come second and third year haha! :p Thanks for the correction! Anyways, less than two days until we hear back, hopefully!! :xf:

type12 12-24-2012, 02:32 PM I am IS, but I was rejected in less than a week (34 MCAT, 3.3 GPA). I sent a letter of reconsideration, but got no response. I love this school, but it's not reciprocated. It really is a great up and comer of medical schools, and a great addition to NJ.
I just wish they would share with me the reason they did not select me!

interviewed 12/14... I thought it went really well in both the regular interview and the patient simulation. Apparently I was wrong. It seems like last year only priority wait listers got pulled off and even then it wasn't a huge amount. I can't say I'm not surprised. This school is great and I can imagine a lot of accepted students not wanting to give up the acceptance.

I would imagine that many folks on the "priority waitlist" will be accepted to and matriculate at other schools, so perhaps there is hope for the regular list as well.

I regret that the decision of the Admissions Committee is that we cannot offer you a position at our school. Please understand that we value your considerable accomplishments.
Your overall application including the personal statement, the secondary application, and the letters of recommendation made it easy to offer you an interview because of the path you chose in these past few years. Less than 10% of applicants are granted an interview and we wish we could accept everyone.
The decision is not a reflection on your abilities and we hope that you gain acceptance to another medical school.
Sincerely,
John F. McGeehan, MD, Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Admissions

moncho 01-09-2013, 10:24 AM By virtue of being a new school, I can understand the difficulty in finding reliable information (or even second hand information) regarding CMSRU. I'm one of the students in the charter class of 50, starting our second semester (as of one week ago today).
Should any accepted or prospective students have any questions about the curriculum thus far, or any other perceptions of the school/faculty/hospital given one semester's worth of experience, please do not hesitate to ask a question here or PM me directly (hopefully I can get other classmates on here so responses aren't so one dimensional). Dr. McGeehan has informed us that during interview days, interviewees found the open discussion period with some of the current students to be very helpful and I'd like to extend that possibility prior to and post interviews.
Thanks and good luck on your hunt.

Wow, that sounds like a month after your interview. Does that mean all of us will be at a one month delay? I got so excited when they said it was only going to be a week before the decision is announced. oh well...
TheSchnugg 01-15-2013, 09:39 AM I interviewed here in September and was waitlisted. In my waitlist letter it said something to the effect that this year there would not be a priority waitlist and thus they can't give us more information about where we stand on the list. However, people are getting placed on a priority waitlist now.
I realize that maybe because was one of the first groups to interview, they might not have had enough people on the waitlist to distinguish between those that were priority waitlisted or normally waitlisted. Do people know if your status could change after they have a better picture of who their applicants are? Has anyone called about the priority wait list for those individuals who were waitlisted very early on? Thanks for the help

niki9 01-23-2013, 07:47 AM Has anyone tried asking how full their class was? I'm an OOS and competing for ~12 OOS seats seems to be near impossible. I heard their first class was 80% in-state (please correct me if im wrong)
There are about 35 of us in the fb group though of course this may not be everyone who is accepted and seriously considering Cooper and some people in the group may still decline acceptance later. Hope that helps.

marshmallow87 01-24-2013, 12:16 PM Waitlisted. Any idea on how long their wait list is?--Judging from past posts i have a feeling they have a pretty long one since they don't have much experience with how many ppl decline/accept their acceptances (since Cooper is probably a last choice school for those with other acceptances).
Thoughts?

Can anyone tell me how late the interview day goes? A friend of mine asked if I could help out with an art show she's helping run in Philly on my interview day. I said I'd check when the interview day would be over and then show up when I could. I can't find any mention on the website of when the day is over though. The event is going on til 7, so I'm assuming the day will be over by then, but it'd be nice to know a ballpark figure.

askamsky51 02-25-2013, 09:09 AM Hey guys,
I have some good info for those of you following cooper as closely as I am (and I imagine those who mine this thread next year for information nuggets). I can confirm there is a difference between the priority waitlist and regular waitlist, and that it does exist this year (I know it was mentioned, but not confirmed really). I received a status update email notifying me that after committee review, I've been transferred from the WL to the priority WL. It also states (as opposed to our first wave of WL emails) that they do intend to dive into the WL this year beginning in spring. So that is a bit more hope to grab onto in terms of if they really are going to be pulling from the WL this year. I know it isn't really any crazy info, but it's something--and those of you as anxious as I am, we'll take anything ;)
Fingers crossed. I know those of you who interviewed probably fell in love with this place as much as I did. Cooper had such a different feel. They truly were there for their mission, it wasn't the afterthought.
Anyhow, thought you all might like to know :)

Good to know. At this point I just want to get into any school, so I'll take any positive news I can get. I sent them an update letter after my initial decision (November?), but I guess it's time to send them another.
jollybengali 03-01-2013, 04:06 PM i interviewed today, which they announced was the very last interview day. also heard that they would be making decisions on wednesday next week, and we could expect to hear back on thursday!
jollybengali 03-07-2013, 09:27 AM we should be hearing back TODAY. I haven't gotten the email yet though. anyone else?

it seems like they admit people the day they mention during your interview, but it takes them longer to communicate waitlist statuses
jollybengali 03-07-2013, 12:19 PM just got the dreaded waitlist email.... my 3rd waitlist so far this year.....:(
EasterPlatypus 03-07-2013, 01:30 PM just got the dreaded waitlist email.... my 3rd waitlist so far this year.....:(
Me too. I guess it's the high priority waitlist since it says "you have been accepted contingent on the decisions made by those granted a full accept decision".
This is wait list #5 for me (no acceptances yet).
askamsky51 03-07-2013, 01:48 PM Yeah. I wish I could help you guys figure out which waitlist it is. I never got the original email for priority WL, since I was sent an email updating my status. Though neither of my emails seem to use that exact terminology. It does however specifically state waitlist and priority WL in each email in the first sentence. That doesn't mean however that the emails couldn't have changed.
jollybengali 03-07-2013, 01:50 PM my email also mentioned ""you have been accepted contingent on the decisions made by those granted a full accept decision", but it just said waitlist, not priority waitlist.

I sure hope they changed/edited the email, since the hp one I received a while ago had language in it for their "inaugural class". Did not make a good impression.
askamsky51 03-07-2013, 01:53 PM .
EasterPlatypus 03-07-2013, 07:02 PM my email also mentioned ""you have been accepted contingent on the decisions made by those granted a full accept decision", but it just said waitlist, not priority waitlist.
Darn. Probably is the regular waitlist then. Has anyone else here gotten a different email this year?
jerse89 03-08-2013, 06:09 AM Interviewed in December. Priority wait listed in January. This email does use misplaced language about the inaugural class, but at least the class size was increased from 50 to 60 in the letter.
You have been put on the priority wait list of Cooper Medical School of Rowan University.
In the weeks and months that follow we will keep in touch and update you on your status. We will go through the interview cycle in such a way that at every meeting there is an opportunity to become a member of our inaugural class. That means that it will likely be in late March that we will begin pulling from the wait list. Should you accept a seat in another school and wish to be removed from our wait list we would appreciate notification. Even if accepted elsewhere we would be happy to keep you on our priority list and give you that option should it arise.
We would be proud to eventually offer you the option of being part of this school that will live by its mission as we change our community.
1cor1311 03-10-2013, 09:25 AM Hey guys,
Im consider applying here for the 2013-2014 cycle. I know its a new school, but can anyone offer up honestly what the area is like. Camden ive heard is a bit dull and impoverishment. NOT to put down the city or the school. Ive just heard by others its not the best area to live. Im from the west coast, if anyone can provide insight about what the community, campus environment is like it would be much appreciated! thanks!

Does anyone remember if the exams are blocked together or staggered at Cooper? If they are blocked, how many exams do you end up taking in a 1-2 day period? Does Cooper have a simulation lab?
