trying to decide if i should apply here. i read about the graduate housing hofstra offers, but the common area is shared. does anyone know about close-to-campus options for us married folk?

There are married people/people living with significant others in our class this year. There are apartments and houses for rent in places like Mineola, East Meadow, Levittown, Franklin Square and Westbury that people live in.
There isn't any on-campus couples housing, but there are a plethora of options less than a 15-minute drive from school.

And now everyone has same firepower for secondaries. Spoiler alert. lol Fortunately, I am not applying until entering class of 2014, so hopefully by that point they will go public with an awesome residency match list.

What so you guys think the odds are if you have a strong LOR from a faculty member of the medical school at a given university? Like, one of the lecturers or clinical instructors?

The same as if you had a LOR from a non given university. LORs are one of those minimum requirements and don't give you the chance to rise above the crowd, they only hurt you if you don't have them or if they are poor, they don't really help you. If you want an advantage that comes from GPA, MCAT score, clinical experience, graduate programs and applying early.

meh I disagree-I think it depends how powerful/well known the LOR writer is to the adcoms. I'm not saying you'll get accepted, but maybe an increased chance of an interview at the given institution.

If the writer maybe writes why you'll fit the school (i.e. faculty from Hofstra writes why you would fit Hofstra), I think it will help.

I don't think anyone can accurately answer this question, but to say it has no effect without knowing all the details is incorrect.

I can see your point as after all it does give a nice in-house feel.It just seemed to me the poster was making the in-house letter seem like a magic bullet.

I submitted mine to AMCAS for verification, and it shows my transcript under that tab. Maybe you should email them?

On a side note, where do you upload your pic? Theres a check box for it under Status, but I can't find a button to upload

For the second question on the secondary..what counts as an interruption? I did my bachelors in 4 yrs and than I worked for a year and than enrolled in a masters program..that's not called an interruption within my education, right. For the third question, what do you all think its asking for? Its kinda vague..

there was a year gap in your education. i would count that as an interruption and use the space to say something beneficial that happened towards your application/experience/knowledge during that time.

There was a year where you were not enrolled in classes. That's an interruption and I'd use the description there to talk about it.

Interruption usually means a stoppage in the main line of education. Like you took a year off during UG. However you can always use it as an opportunity to tell them more about you

Negative. If I did that, I wouldn't get in to medical school! Some applications even say "excluding traffic violations." Obviously if the traffic ticket included an "under the influence" tag or something like that, then you have to list it.

After you pick your interview date, they have this nifty little page about areas to stay and transportation.

If you plan to fly and take public transportation to Long Island, you should fly in and out of JFK Airport. From JFK, you can take the Airtran to Jamaica LIRR Station. From Jamaica Station, take the LIRR to Hempstead Station. From there, you can take a $15 cab to the hotel or SOM. Also, Hofstra University provides free shuttles to campus from the train station. A shuttle service schedule can be found on our website.

I scheduled my flight home some time around 6:30. I think that should be more than enough time whether driving or taking public transportation.

WOW... Thought I could take a couple days to speak to my family about when would be a good time to go and BAM, couldn't get an interview until November! I really love this school and hope it doesn't play out as a disadvantage. They don't make decisions until December though so I guess it is okay. Definitely not expected and I had to re-run the dates with my family

MD/PhD here as well. Same day ! I received the interview invite this afternoon and feel tremendously pumped !!!!! I love East Coast so much lol.

By the way, do you know if we will start at Feinstein or at School of Medicine ? The emails were confusing. The first email said MD/PhD interview would start at Feinstein and end at School of Medicine, but the website and the second email (confirmation email) said interview would occur at School of Medicine. Feinstein and SOM are 10 minutes away from each other by car driving !

hi guys, i was hoping i could get your thoughts on one of the supplement questions. for the last question where they ask whether there is anything you would like to bring to their attention, I was going to write a paragraph on why i wanted to attend their school. I realize that this section is usually for people to explain educational gaps and any institutional disciplinary actions but I never like to leave things blank. Anyone think that's overkill?

If you leave at 2:30 you can get to LaGuardia in under 45 mins and you shouldn't get any traffic.

Hofstra student weighing in here. I've lived on Long Island about 20 minutes from both LaGuardia/JFK my whole life. This is mostly accurate. LaGuardia is actually only about 25-35 minutes from the school, adjusting for stoplights and spot traffic makes 45 minutes reasonable. You should always consider that on Long Island, you can always hit an hour + of traffic out of nowhere, luckily there are approximately 120954384763 ways to get to LaGuardia so if you have a GPS/iphone with you in case you need a detour, budgeting an hour to get there is more than enough.

That being said, all costs being equal (which often they are not), I would go to JFK over LaGuardia. It's marginally closer to Hofstra, but more importantly, LaGuardia is a terrible airport. Don't hesitate to go there if it's cheaper (it's not dangerous or anything), but all other things being equal I would choose JFK any day.

Also, while it is true that you can go from JFK to Hempstead (or literally to a block away from my house) via train, it can be somewhat confusing if you are not accustomed to mass transit. You basically take the monorail (AirTrain) from the airport to Jamaica Station, which is the major hub of the Long Island Rail Road in Queens. From there you can get to any LIRR station (including Penn/Manhattan), including Hempstead. The cost is $5 for the monorail and $6-13 for the LIRR, depending on what time you travel. However the train is not directly next to campus, it's walkable during the day (~5 minutes by car) but I wouldn't walk through that part of Hempstead alone at night. Chances are your living arrangements will be further away and require transportation anyway.

Other area airports include Newark Liberty, which I would avoid as it is in New Jersey and significantly further away, and Long Island McArthur airport, which is a small airport only serviced by Southwest and is ~40+ minutes from the school.

I'm happy to offer longer-than-necessary answers to any other questions y'all might have about getting around long island or about LI in general. Good luck everyone :luck:

I'm planning to arrive at JFK airport around 11:20pm the night before my interview day. Does anyone know if it's safe to take monorail to Jamaica station and then LIRR to Hempstead at that time ? After arriving at Hempstead, I will take cab to hotel. How long does it take if I go by this route ?

On the other hand, I'm also contemplating to take cab from JFK airport directly to the hotel (possibly Marriott). Does anyone have any ideas how much this can cost ?

P.S: the third option I'm thinking of is to rent a car. Do you think this option is worse than taking the cab ? Because it will be late night, I'm trying to find the most economical method to get from JFK to the hotel in the least amount of time so that I can get to sleep as early as possible.

The only "unsafe" part is walking alone in Hempstead at night (and you'll find that most of us at Hofstra have done that at least once or twice if not more often); as long as you're taking a cab once you get to the train station and you don't go wandering off into Jamaica while waiting for a train, you're good. That being said, I've never actually done it before so I can't offer first-hand-experience in that way, just my knowledge of LI.

Ollie's is probably the most popular airport service around, in my experience they're more expensive than a cab (which should be available at the airport 24/7) but less expensive than a "fine" car service (i.e. a towncar) and very reliable. Then again I've never taken a yellow cab all the way out to LI I have no clue if they charge more for leaving NYC. Here's the website for Ollie's reservations:

http://www.olliestaxi.com/Reservations.html

You can make a reservation online, but more relevantly it lists some phone numbers you can call to get an idea of the price.

Granted you can prove that you are who you are and that you got an interview invite, if you started an IndieGogo campaign I would donate and I think other SDNers would help too. I don't make much money but I can spare $10-20 for someone who worked hard enough to get a medical school interview but struck some bad luck. Of course people would have to be confident you weren't scamming us. I'd say it's worth a shot.

It's a DO program. It's actually put me in a tough situation. I have to submit my non-refundable deposit by December 15th, which is why I was a little annoyed that Hofstra, at the earliest, sends out acceptances in January.

Ah. Well do DO programs refund your deposit as long as you finalize the decision by a certain date? Because then you could just rescind the deposit two weeks later.

As far as I'm concerned, no. You submit everything by December 15th or you lose your spot. It's a $1000 non-refundable deposit, so it's quite the chunk of change. I guess depending on how tomorrow goes will determine how I feel about my DO spot.

It seems to be variable...Their first year they sent out about 800 invitations, but I think last year the amount extended was closer to 650 invites.

For current students or those familiar with the area, would it be a ridiculous idea for me to try to commute from the Upper East Side to Hofstra the morning of the interview (starts at 8 am)? I can stay with a friend there and it would save me the cost of a hotel in Long Island.

Not ridiculous. Some people in our class commute from the city everyday for 8am class. Plan on waking up early, though.

Pretty fantastic experience interviewing here. Everyone was super friendly and down-to-earth. My two interviews were very conversational and low-stress. The medical school building is small, though they plan on expanding in December. Currently, they only have a couple of classrooms, a small eatery, offices and the structures lab, which is the anatomy lab. They have the Center for Learning and Innovation, which is a like 5-10 minutes away from the school, where they have all of their simulation men and standardized patient events. I'm from the PNW and thought the campus and area were great! It reminded me of the area where I currently live. Towards the end of the day, we had lunch with some of the students and they were all very happy about the program. I'm still a little unsure about the PBL approach, but they seem to have it structured pretty well. They give you everything you need so that you may structure your own approach to learning and that's reinforced through their PEARLS sessions that you have every week. I'm pretty stoked on Hofstra. I wasn't expecting much from the interview and came out of it completely sold on the school.

I believe they said they will be interviewing around 600 people for 80 spots, so it's going to be a bit competitive, but next year they've been given the green light to open up 100 spots, so it should become a bit easier as they grow.

My current plan is to get to Penn Station by 5:30 - 6:00 am, and catching the Ronkonkoma Train towards Farmingdale or Port Jefferson Train towards Huntington and getting off at Mineola. From there I can catch the Hofstra shuttle at 6:30ish to campus I think. Does that sound about right?

I'm interviewing here soon, and I was wondering if anyone had any insight into the process. What was the interview like? What kind of questions did they ask? In one of my previous interviews at a different school, they gave you a map and you had to run around the city campus to find each of your interviewers on the fly. Does this school make you treasure hunt for your interviewers or is everything in one place? Thanks in advanced for your help.

Maybe I'm reading the shuttle schedule incorrectly, but that's why I was looking at taking the LIRR to Mineola (arrive ~6:30am) instead of Hempstead because the Hofstra shuttle leaves Mineola at 6:45 am? Otherwise, the shuttle does pick up at Hempstead starting at 7:30 am?

Just two, both with faculty, open file- my interviewers had both clearly read my application very thoroughly and mentioned items from my personal statement. There were no "tough" or "trick" questions- a few thing I had to think about a little bit but all very reasonable in the context of my application.

Questions for current students or those who have already interviewed:

I don't want to pay for a Long Island hotel, and my boyfriend lives in southern CT. The drive from his house to Hofstra is 2 hours. Would it be ridiculous of me to leave his house at 5 am for the 8 am interview? And does anyone know about the NYC traffic I could get stuck in? I've driven to NYC early before...but never Long Island. I'll probably end up booking a hotel, but I'm toying with the idea of just driving really early.

Speaking of hotels, has anyone stayed at the Red Roof inn nearby? It's cheaper than the Marriot. Is it safe?

THANKS!

To anyone who has interviewed and taken the LIRR to get to Hofstra - which train did you take? I see there is one getting in at 6:17 AM which seems super early, and one that arrives at 7:33 which seems to be cutting it kind of close... Getting up at 4:30 doesn't sound appealing to me but I'll do it if I have to in order to make it there in time...

Also, are there taxis at the station? Or does one have to call in advance? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Hey guys - I haven't received any "completed" email from Hofstra and my online portal has no notification that it's complete. It just says the following:

Requirements for completed application

Submission of the supplemental application must be NO LATER THAN January 15, 2013. Please note that your application will NOT be considered submitted until you sign and click on the 'Submit Application' button on the Secondary App tab. (Optional Program applications can be submitted at a later date.)
You can check the status of your application by going to the Status link. Once all required items are received (including Letters of Reference, your application will then considered "complete" and it will be moved onto the screening process. You will also be updated on your status by email.

But it has check marks next to all my requirements. I'm sorry if this is a repeated question, but should I have received a complete email?

Does anyone know how the admissions process works for those that interview early? I interviewed on 10/03, but if acceptances do not get sent until December, does that mean that admissions committees do not meet until December? Or do they meet some time earlier, make a decision, but do not officially notify candidates until December?

We interviewed together : )
What I understood from what they told us was that a week or so after our interviews they met and discussed our application. They probably gave us a score of some sort that allows for a ranking of the candidates. After most interviews are complete at december they draw a line for scores at initial acceptances vs waitlist vs rejection so basically while we were reviewed earlier than others I don't think we were given any advantage as a result.

I don't think so. Checked Hofstra's facebook page. They just announced an hour ago that they started their rolling admissions.

Ahh Accepted by email!!! :highfive:

Interviewed end of October. Can't believe they're making decisions already! I loved everything about the school when I was interviewing, but it's still a little scary to go somewhere with no match list or Step scores. I have a lot to think about.
