Just curious, but for those of you applying here, how are you working through the whole Shreveport being one of the only schools that doesn't take letters directly from AMCAS? Should I tell my career center to send letters to AMCAS and directly to Shreveport?

Not to much action going on so far, maybe everyone is still studying for MCAT. I am ready to take this monster and let it all be over!

I have not. I don't think they're getting sent out until the end of the month, though. I'm not exactly sure when secondaries come out? I thought that AMCAS didn't release apps until June 27th or so, but my AMCAS says it is now available to med schools, so I really have no idea. It was just verified on the 18th, though, so your mileage may vary.

Are you EDP, NodForce?

I'm not EDP, but I am trying to apply as early as possible to as many schools as possible. Third application cycle and I'm just hoping to hear something back early as possible!

On the secondary for LSU-Shreveport, do they ask you to report if you have ever been arrested even if the charges have been expunged?

I have not received a 2ndry yet but I'll let you know when I get it. I know LSU New Orleans sent their 1st ones out on June 29th. You may want to try their forum since their 2ndry should be similar to Shreveport's.

After looking at previous years' application threads, it seems that Shreveport doesn't send out secondaries until July 10-14th or thereabouts. Hopefully it's relatively short since that's a quick turnaround for EDP deadline on August 1!

Hey Guys. Just wanted to say I'm applying ED as well. Trying to think positive, but does anyone have any ideas on the numbers in terms of how many applications they get for ED and how many the accept? Anyone know the lowest MCAT score they've accepted. Much appreciated and good luck the rest of the way.

I *believe* I saw on a previous thread that one year they got 22 EDP applications and took 18 or 19. Don't quote me on that, though... I know at New Orleans, you have to have a 3.5 and a 10 on each MCAT section so I assume that the guidelines are similar at Shreveport.

I really hope you're right passerine, but I'm skeptical because those numbers seem way too high. 18/22 is way too high of an acceptance rate.

I thought the same thing when I saw that thread. It may have been that they interviewed 22 EDP and took 18 or 19 of those who interviewed.

Got the secondary about an hour ago. We have to talk about our most fulfilling experiences in healthcare, leadership, research, and volunteering. (Why can't they just look at AMCAS?)

It doesn't specifically say, but if I have no actual research to my name, I guess I can skip that part? Unless I can talk about working in a lab on campus, but I doubt that's what they want.

They also have us list the grades we got in pre-reqs, as well as psychology and foreign language classes. And there's a place to explain hardships.

Anyone here using the LSU premed committee? Insights into how long it will take to be completed/submitted? e.g. are we talking end of July or early September here?

It should not hurt to add all of the biology, chemistry, physics, and English courses since they are already on the AMCAS. I would also add any psychology and foreign language courses.

ETA: I'm taking a final prereq over the summer. Should I wait until the end of July to submit the secondary so that grade be included? Or submit ASAP and update them with the grade later?
For EDP 2ndry, it may be too late to wait till the end of July. I would try to call LSUHSC-S admissions and ask what needs to be done. They may let you send them an official transcript directly once you have a letter grade. On the AMCAS, there should be a course status that indicates your course is in progress but you can call them and ask them too. For EDP, AMCAS should be submitted ASAP so it has time to be verified before August 1st deadline.

Whoops, I should've specified in my post that I'm not EDP. I'll still contact them to ask if they'd rather me submit before the grade or after.

ETA: E-mailed admissions and received a response within a few hours. I was told that since I'm not EDP, I can wait until the end of July to submit my secondary, so my summer prereq grades will be in.
So, I'm assuming I won't be at a disadvantage in getting an interview if I wait a few weeks to turn it in at the end of summer session, because they're going to concentrate on EDP first. According to the website, they don't send out interview invites for regular decision until October anyway.

Anyone here using the LSU premed committee? Insights into how long it will take to be completed/submitted? e.g. are we talking end of July or early September here?

The LSU pre-med committee meets every two weeks beginning in May (running til September, I think), and they review 25 applicants per meeting. I believe if you are EDP you had to turn in your application to the committee before most applicants, so they can review you in the first set of meetings.

I'm not ED and turned my application into the committee about five days before the deadline. My letters from them were just submitted to AMCAS this week (you'll get an e-mail notification). The committee says they review applicants in the order in which their committee applications were completed, but this includes when your professors turned in their LORs to them.

From last year's forum, it looks like they did not interview anybody before the second half of September. It also looks like the first acceptance notices went out the first week of October but I may be wrong since they are obligated to let EDP applicants know of their decision by October 1st. A rejection notice later than that date will make it nearly impossible to apply to some of the other schools with earlier general admission deadlines.

passerine
07-15-2012, 02:04 PM
They should start reviewing them pretty much as soon as everyone is complete, I think. They almost have to, in order to send out interview invites for August/September so that everyone has an answer by October 1. Unfortunately there haven't been too many EDPers on the previous years' threads (at least for Shreveport), so there's not too much to look back on.

Just out of curiosity, would any EDP applicants mind sharing what it is about LSU-S that strongly appeals to them? I'm applying to all LA schools RD and think I'd choose N.O. if I had to pick right now, but that's probably because I've toured it before and it's closer to home. I'd like to hear people's reasons for applying ED to Shreveport, because obviously that's some passionate & committed interest. Maybe some current students could chime in with what they think about their school?

I just want to hear various opinions so I can learn as much as I can outside of the school website...the Shreveport threads seem to be pretty quiet most of the time on SDN =/

I did EDP at S'port for a few reasons.

1) I've been told by a number of people in the know that they really look highly on people who have done ED. Mostly its because they are usually the safety school and like to know they have sure-bet students. In fact, if you look at the numbers, ED is the way to go if you have all your ducks in a row.

2) I'm from North-LA. If I have to go through Hell, I'd rather go through it knowing my family and friends are just down the road (or in my mom's case, the hall). Also, people from NOLA seem to hate S'Port because it's 'boring'. It's not boring, it's just different. I'm from the country and like Shreveport because everyone seems to also be from the country or grew up there or whatever. In other words, I want to be around people that don't look at me stupid because I wear boots and say, "I'll tell you what" or "Where's the cornbread, ya'll?"

3) Finally, Shreveport is a regional healthcare center. LSUHSC-S has the best burn unit in the state, it is the regional trauma center, cancer center, biomedical research center, etc. All things being equal, I want to train and learn at a medical school that is attached to the best hospital in the area, not just another hospital in town.

I want Shreveport because it's home. I live in Baton Rouge now and as much as I love it, I can't wait to get back home and walk around the R.W. Norton gardens, eat a Strawn's pie, catch a movie at the Robinson, and drink a beer at Our Place.

How much info should I put in the 255 character prompts? Do I need to just identify them and let my AMCAS app do the talking or should I go into as much detail as the space provided will allow me?

MsPlasmodesmata
07-16-2012, 05:11 PM
I think I'm going to try to shorten my "most meaningful descriptions" on AMCAS for the secondary, but basically say the same thing. I'd like to say "see AMCAS" but if they want these answers right in front of them on the secondary, I might as well just repeat myself and not risk looking like I don't want to spend time on this particular app.
Although, I wonder, when it says "most fulfilling experience" should I talk about a particular volunteer activity in general (like I did on AMCAS), or one SPECIFIC experience that occurred through that activity?

cbgeek65
07-16-2012, 05:16 PM
That's a good question. I'm going to talk about my time with the organization through which I had my most meaningful volunteer experiences.

I feel like the whole app is very vague. I'm worried they did that on purpose so the app would be a kind of "test". As a potential med student, I am naturally stressed about any test I encounter. Real or perceived. :)

1. I chose Shreveport because it's a smaller school and seems to have a really nurturing atmosphere. I believe Shreveport's classes are about 115-120 compared to NO's 180-190. Coming from one of the biggest universities in the country, you really come to appreciate the value of a small class size when it comes to learning; of course, you give up some opportunities in areas like research, but feeling comfortable and at home was more important to me.

2. Oddly enough, I chose Shreveport the city over New Orleans as well, even though I adore New Orleans. Lower cost of living + less traffic + fewer distractions + safer.

Overall, it's just a matter of personal taste, I suppose.

Based on last year's threads, the RD interviews start toward the end of September/beginning of October and continue through the spring, sometimes even as late as April. They seem to admit within a month or so of interviewing most of the time.

Here's the time frame and list of deadlines from the Shreveport website: http://www.lsuhscshreveport.edu/Admissions/TimelineandDeadlines.aspx

Basically (from what I can tell), they start interviewing RD people while they're sending out EDP decisions, and start notifying people between the end of October or early November on through the spring as people interview. Not sure if the interviews take place in the order that applications are completed, or level of interest, or what.

Maybe. The MSAR says that there were 20 EDP people in the Matriculation Data section. I don't know if that's matriculants or applicants, though, just because of the way the data is arranged. If it's 20 matriculants, that seems pretty in line with what you'd expect.

Haha, no, but I was not invited either and my stats are average. I will start thinking about General Admissions Process if I do not hear anything by the end of August although I have to wait till October 1st to apply for that.

Think about it though, it is logical. If I was on the Admissions Committee, I would invite those with the highest stats for the earliest interviews. That way, it would be easier to decide about others. What worries me is that based on the same logic if they have already invited the stronger applicants for late September, they may have already made up their minds about EDP and are looking beyond that. I hope that I am wrong and I get an invitation soon.

Thank you, I hope you are right. I have a few friends ahead of me who got in LSUHSC-S and LSUHSC-NO last year with stats similar to mine but that was during regular decision so I am not discouraged. In fact, it has been a great year and I have improved my score to a level that seemed impossible not too long ago. However, this year's application process might be more challenging than the previous one. I came across a Tweet from LSUHSC-S that sounded like they have received 31 EDP applications this year. The wording also suggested that the number showed a significant increase compared to that of last year. Perhaps, it is more competitive this year.

so weird, last year first interview invites went out late august for RD...don't know what's the holdup

Probably Hurricane Isaac delays and a larger ED applicant pool to deal with. I have no idea, though. I got two of those "Application Status Update" emails saying my application was complete and "Under consideration for a possible interview."

They send that email out every week or two to all applicants. I got it all last year right up until I got my rejection letter in March. So don't read too much into receiving/not receiving that letter. It is the exact same format as last year. All it tells you is that they have your application items like secondary and letters since they don't use the AMCAS system.
I submitted my secondary back in mid-July. My committee letter has just been sent last week. So I'm just now fully complete and have gotten two of the emails already.

According to Dr. Kennedy, the committee is going to meet next week for final decisions on EDP applications, so hopefully they'll send out stuff for RD interviews soon.

Per Titin's request, here's a little breakdown of my interview experience:

EDPers don't have the regularly scheduled lunch and tour that RD interviews have, so we just went ahead and checked in with Ms. Hatcher, who may actually be the nicest person on the planet. Dr. Kennedy gave us a little rundown of the day, and we introduced ourselves, chatted for a bit. We then had two closed-book interviews (meaning resume and personal statement, but not scores or grades), one each with a different member of the admissions committee, and then an open-book one with either Dr. Kennedy or Dr. Arnold.

Everyone was incredibly nice, from the students to the faculty to even people not involved with admissions at all who gave me directions. People have also complained that Shreveport's facilities aren't as nice as NOLA's, but I was really pleasantly surprised by how nice everything was--not that I was expecting it to be run down, or anything, but you know what I mean.

If I ever had any doubts about wanting to go to Shreveport, they're definitely gone now. The students seem really happy to be there and actually seem to like and want to help each other. Plus they put lectures on Podcast so you can listen to them more than once if you need to, get sick, etc. All in all, I really loved the school and had a great time interviewing. Hope this helps!

People that have already interviewed here, can you please give us some feedback on how your experience went?

The whole interview process really sold me on LSU, which is something I did not expect. There were twelve of us interviewing on Tuesday, and everyone in my group was super friendly. We started the day off in the conference room with Dr. Kennedy, giving introductions and telling something unique about ourselves. FYI: think of something that no one else could possibly have experienced. Dr. Kennedy will ask the entire table if it applies to anyone else. We then went lunch with four students (Two M1's, one M2, and a M4). The lunch was actually pretty good, and the students were incredibly informative. There was a slide show showing all of the social functions, community service events, and group trips which looked pretty fun. After that some other people spoke to us (financial aid, curriculum etc), and then it was off to the interviews. Personally, my two interviews, were super laid back. I was asked why I wanted to be a doctor, and then it lead to a 30 minute casual conversation. That was pretty much the format for both of my interviews, one question and then 30 minutes of a normal conversation. I did however talk to two other people in my group who had less than stellar interviews. Apparently, one interviewer would give them ten situations in which they had to describe how they would react (odd ethical questions, I guess?). The other interviewer was just super intense. Despite, the two shaky interviewers, almost everyone had a really similar experience to my own.

The exit interview is just to explain anything questionable in your application, but its super laid back as well.

Overall A++, once the interviews were done about 10-15 medical students came into the room just to chat. I asked most of the students if they had any regrets about attending LSU Shreveport (versus attending somewhere else). It was a unanimous consensus that they loved the school, students, and Shreveport (yeah that was a shocker).

Hope this helps!

I have not heard of anyone getting II's other than the ones in that first big batch they sent out, which had all the dates through December to choose from.
I do, however, know of two people who cancelled their Shreveport interviews after being accepted RD to New Orleans. No idea if the Shreveport admissions office is filling their spots.
...But that brings me to my question: why is there such a stigma around this school in south Louisiana? My classmates seem to have this notion that most people would choose LSU-NO over Shreve, but I honestly liked the atmosphere at my Shreveport interview a LOT more than at New Orleans. Everyone seemed so happy and supportive of each other. And if I'm going through the drudgery that is med school, I want friendly & positive classmates.
My blind interviewers, both of whom were doctors educated out of state, all had nothing but praise for the students and emphasized that the med students are valuable to the operation of the whole medical center (as opposed to being flies on the wall that everyone else tolerates). They also spoke highly of the administration, saying that the people at the top are key in fostering such a supportive environment.
I also had no idea that there's a St. Jude's affiliate children's hospital right next door, which is attractive since I'm leaning toward a pediatric specialty.

Anyway, my first choice is still a certain reach school, but I was very impressed by Shreveport. If anyone has questions about the interview, feel free to PM me.
ETA since people have inquired via message: The systems-based curriculum & use of standardized patients are also strong selling points for me.

It's a New Orleans vs. Shreveport kind of thing. I don't think it has to do with the med school but the cities that they are in. The perception is that Shreveport has nothing to do and New Orleans has everything. As a Shreveport native, I don't feel that way. There's a decent nightlife in S'port from what I know but I don't really do that kind of thing so I'm going on 3rd party info. I actually have no desire to live in New Orleans but will if that's where I'm admitted to medical school.

I think Dr. Kennedy calls you if you're accepted at the adcom meeting a few days after your interview. Interview Tuesday, adcom meeting Thursday, he calls Thursday evening and sends letters out on Friday. If you're not accepted right away, but you get on the acceptable list, that means you can get an acceptance letter at any time thru May, but you won't get a call.
That's my understanding of the process from last year's thread.

do you mind me asking what was your gpa/mcat?

EDIT: My undergrad GPA was not very good/competitive at all, I met with Dr. Kennedy about a year and a half ago and he told me that if I wanted to get into medical school I would need to draw a line between my undergrad and post-bac work. He recommended the medical master's program at Mississippi College. He said I would need at least a 3.6 to be competitive and to just forget about it if I dropped below that. I finished with a 4.0 at MC in the most grueling academic program I have ever undertaken. I took the MCAT before going to MC and scored a 10BS/11PS/9VR.'

I've heard him mention the post-bac program at MC. I also met with him last year because my gpa was on the low end, 3.3, and he didn't recommend MC or any other post-bac to me. I've just been taking more science classes in prep. I asked about my mcat and he told me it was competitive and I shouldnt retake it. I really thought he would send me to MC like others I have known, but for some reason he didn't.

I got an email before I got my letter (but after the call). The email will link to a site. Be sure to list speeding tickets, etc. They aren't a big deal, but you don't want any surprises at this point.

I was EDP. Everything happened within like a week or so. Maybe there is a back log right now. Lots of applications are being processed right now.

I got my Certiphi email on friday. I paid the deposit on thursday so I'm not sure if it was dependent on that or if it's just totally random.

Nevermind I just saw the email that said they should start January 1st so I'm sure it will take a little while before it comes to me:

"As you were notified in the AMCAS application, you have applied to at least one medical school that is participating in the AMCAS-facilitated Criminal Background Check Service, through which Certiphi Screening, Inc. (a Vertical Screen(R) Company) will procure a background report on applicants with certain types of admission actions.

Background checks will begin after January 1 for all conditionally accepted applicants, except for Early Decision Program (EDP) applicants. If you were conditionally accepted under the Early Decision Program, your background check will begin immediately upon your conditional acceptance.

If you are placed on a participating school's alternative list, that school may request that a background check be procured.

When your background check is started, Certiphi Screening, Inc. will send an e-mail with additional information to your preferred e-mail address. To ensure that you receive this communication, please:

* Ensure that your preferred e-mail address is up to date at all times. (Remember to re-certify and resubmit your application after making a change.)
* Add StudentEdition@certiphi.com as a trusted e-mail sender.

For a fee, you may procure your own report from Certiphi Screening, Inc. in advance of the AMCAS-facilitated report by going to https://www.applicationstation.com/home/cal.asp?rc=CERTAP2013.

Please note that this optional report is not required and it does not take the place of the report to be procured for medical schools.

For additional information, including details regarding the consumer report to be procured, go to Certiphi's web site: http://www.applicationstation.com.

Thank you for using AMCAS."

It only asks about felony and misdemeanor charges. Speeding tickets and traffic violations don't usually fall under that category unless you are doing like 25 mph over the speed limit. I don't think I would need to list a ticket for running a stop sign 6 years ago right?

You'd think a traffic violation is not a big deal, but a speeding ticket showed up on mine. Dr. K said I should have listed it.

I told Dr. Kennedy that I had about three speeding tickets, and he said it wasn't a big deal, so I would just list them to be safe.

Generally they will call Thursday evening after they meet, then mail out letters the next day. Sometimes, though, people miss the calls or they don't go through for whatever reason, and they have to wait for their letters to come in to find out.

How many people are typically on the wait list for LSU Shreveport? I know they don't tell you, but is there any way to get an idea? I am on the wait list, but the letter seemed so positive. Dr. Kennedy explicitly says that "most" of the people on the Acceptable list will be accepted some time between now and August, but I was wondering how true that was, and what exactly "most" implied.

According to [http://www.lsuhscshreveport.edu/Admissions/TimelineandDeadlines.aspx], April 15 is the deadline for double holders to make a decision. After this date, I'm bet a lot of people on the wait list get a call. Shreveport is considered a safety school by many students in south Louisiana and I'm sure many of them will choose NOLA over S'port if they are accepted to both.

Good luck, I'm pulling for you!

Just to follow up on this Certiphi stuff in case anyone is worried still, I got my results back in two days even with listing 6 addresses through Mississippi and Louisiana. Everything came back clean even with multiple speeding tickets and other minor traffic violations. Never have I been in handcuffs though or had any other trouble. They are just making sure nothing big has not been revealed.

Shreveport is considered a safety school by many students in south Louisiana and I'm sure many of them will choose NOLA over S'port if they are accepted to both.

On the MSAR, Shreve actually has a slightly higher GPA (for both overall and science) in its tenth percentile and its median for acceptances...but N.O.'s median MCAT is one point higher. So the stats are basically equal for both schools. I guess people think LSU-S is a safety school because of the location? Though I personally know 3 people from South LA who chose LSU-S over LSU-NO last cycle after being accepted to both. It'd be a hard decision for me, but I think LSU-S does have a lot of acceptable list movement because of people choosing to live in New Orleans over Shreveport.

You can't hold a spot at Shreveport + another school past April 15. But deposits aren't due til May 15.

The double-hold deadline for most schools is in May, but for Shreveport it is April since classes start in July.

Do you think it would send the wrong message to call Dr. Kennedy up and ask point blank if there's anything I can do/ he needs from me to get an interview? I don't want to apply again for a 4th year. If there's any chance of an interview, I want to do whatever I need to get it. I've been told that they actually interview people until July for the Fall class. So I feel like there's a very small chance but still a chance even this late in the year.

I know that last year, I had received an official rejection letter by this time of year. I haven't received one yet for this year. I'm doing the Mississippi College SMP so I wonder if they're waiting on Spring grades or something to make the final disposition.

MsPlasmodesmata

I say go for it, Smurfette. How else are you going to know where you stand, if there's a chance for an interview, or if they're waiting for your spring grades, if you don't call?
I don't know how accessible Dr. Kennedy himself is, or if you'll get straight answers from anyone, but I think you should definitely call the office. Best to get a handle on your situation as early as possible so you can plan accordingly and maybe get some anxiety relief.
I really hope you can score an interview! And if there are a few left, calling shows your sincere interest.

I think so. They definitely take your experiences into account, and more and more applicants are non-traditional - I myself have been working in research for the past two years. Your GPA is good (better than mine), and your MCAT was about where mine was (I had a 28), and I got an II in early December. I'd say you have a shot, so go for it.

Yes, it's a private group (I'm in it). It has 104 people in it but I know a few of these are upperclassmen that made the group and are posting real estate listings and such.
According to the MSAR, last year's entering class was 119 people so it seems like there will be some more acceptances eventually. But I don't know how many incoming first years either don't have facebook or aren't in the group.
