Good luck to everyone applying! :luck:
Tanstripe 05-15-2012, 01:31 AM Potentially applying here (saw that they have a certificate program in Bioethics & Health Policy <3), though I was curious whether anyone knew about what percentage of the student body comes from Illinois.

Not sure exactly where I saw it, thinking MSAR, but I want to say that they admit 49% of their students from Illinois.
BurntFlower 05-18-2012, 03:00 PM Any Loyola students that can talk about their experience in this university? It would be greatly appreciated!
AlexUniv 06-05-2012, 11:09 AM Don't mind me, just another applicant....

applied here this year very late and was rejected, reapplying. they offer post-rejection feedback, I was told by an admissions officer that the current class for this fall is at least 20 ppl OVER filled right now (this is being talked a lot in the 2011-2012 thread too). not sure what this means for the upcoming cycle, but it makes me afraid that they might be really conservative to avoid a situation like this next year.

Incoming M1 here. Thought I would comment a little on the over acceptance situation. The office of admissions has not released any information to the class about this yet, but if they do I'm sure you all will find out about the same time as us haha. I do know that a few schools are having this over acceptance problem. I know Iowa increased it's OOS acceptances this year to make sure they met their numbers, and as of May 15 they were almost 15 people over accepted. BU also was over accepted and doesn't have any waitlist movement (I interviewed at both schools, so I have stayed up to date with their admissions process). I think I saw on a thread that Penn was over accepted and even offered 2 year tuition waivers to people willing to defer. Loyola hasn't offered anything like that yet. Just know that this over acceptance isn't a localized issue, many schools are facing that this year.
Acceptances fluctuate a lot. Try not to worry about it. If they decide to accept 20 less people this next year that means that they will accept 330 and not 350 (ish)... not a huge change.
Also, to those applying, I was really impressed with the character displayed by the staff and students at Loyola during my interview/2nd look day. I had some good acceptances but chose Loyola because they really seemed to care about their students.
Good luck this cycle. If you guys want any info or need help please feel free to ask, I'm happy to try to help any way that I can.
sparkles21 06-27-2012, 02:39 PM Thanks for the info! I am applying this year, but I'm taking the MCAT on Aug 4th. So my scores won't be released until Sept 5th. I'm submitting the primary within the next few days, but the secondary won't be done until end of August, provided I receive it before then, or if I have they have a screening process then not until after September 5th. Anyways, my question is, would it be worth even applying to Loyola for the 2013 cycle, this late?

hey I applied in a similar timeline last year, assuming this is your first (?) mcat, you won't get the secondary until after you get your score. so if you pre write the essays you can submit right away. hard to answer if that will be too "late" for you though, it all really depends on your strength as an applicant and how well you'd fit in their program
sparkles21 06-27-2012, 04:49 PM Thanks so much, I appreciate it. Yep, this will be my first (and hopefully last) MCAT. I have a 3.64 overall GPA and a 3.6 science GPA. I'm shooting for a 30-32 MCAT (fingers crossed).

Are you asking if it would be worth applying to Loyola specifically? Or applying to medical school in general? It sounds like you will be applying, but are questioning applying to Loyola specifically. I am not one to speculate on possibilities of acceptance. However, if you're applying during the 2012-2013 cycle regardless, you wouldn't lose a thing applying to Loyola. Last year I went back and added 2 schools late in the cycle and ended up getting II to both and an acceptance at one.
I'll put it this way. You're goal is to get accepted. To get accepted you have to apply.... Although it is late you have nothing to lose.
hey guys does anyone know what the character limits are on the essays? I looked through last year's thread briefly but didn't see it anywhere, thanks!
jcurtin2013 07-08-2012, 03:43 PM hey guys, anyone know when the secondary comes out? I know loyola screens, but can anyone give an estimate? thanks
jcurtin2013 07-08-2012, 03:44 PM hey guys does anyone know what the character limits are on the essays? I looked through last year's thread briefly but didn't see it anywhere, thanks!
from what i saw its 25 lines. no character or word limit, just a line limit, whatever that means.
immunology89 07-09-2012, 06:18 PM hey guys does anyone know what the character limits are on the essays? I looked through last year's thread briefly but didn't see it anywhere, thanks!
If you look through last year's thread there is a huge debate about the significance of what 25 lines means. I'm sure that this debate will come up again on this year's thread if the secondary is the same. Personally I think they just do this so that you don't go overboard and write something super long. You will do yourself a lot of good if you don't stress too much about the exact meaning of the 25 lines and just get the secondary in ASAP. I think its vague because they don't mind if you go a little long.
I will recommend that you take your time and put together a solid secondary and like I said, submit it ASAP. My interviewers had really dug through my secondary essays and we discussed minor things that the average reader could not find by skimming. All of this information just comes from my personal experience and the experience of friends who applied last year.
gotcha thanks! I didn't see that debate I only glanced through the first 2 pages of last year's thread
so I gather no one here has received the secondary yet?

Are you sure it'll be the same this year? It's my last "real" secondary and doesn't look too terrifying, but I'm afraid they'll change up the prompts.
MynameisMike 07-13-2012, 01:22 PM My longest essay answer last year was just under 300 words which I think was almost exactly 25 lines so as long as you stay somewhere around there, you'll be fine. Good luck everyone!

jameschoun 07-20-2012, 04:43 PM I just got it too.
One of my longer ones I've had to fill out.... Dang... No stated character limits by the way. Good luck everyone.
1. Describe a valuable experience in your personal development? This might be a decision you have made, an achievement of which you are particularly proud of, or a person who has influenced your life.
2. Provide in detail an experience of working with individual(s) from diverse background(s). What was the experience? How did it have an impact on you?
3. Describe how you have dealt with a personal or academic challenge. Focus on what you learned about yourself and how it will help you during the challenges you might face in medical school.
4. Your patient has a rare disease and would be a great candidate for an experimental new treatment. You are the principle investigator for the research project and you and your Chair would like to pursue this experiment with the patient. The parents of your patient are adamant against the treatment. How would you handle this situation?
5. If you will not be enrolled as a full-time student during the current academic year, please explain what you will be doing prior to your planned matriculation into medical school? If you are a re-applicant, please tell us how your application has improved since the last time you applied.
6. Please use this space to bring the information in your AMCAS application up-to-date. Please indicate additional grades earned, alterations in your proposed coursework or graduation date, address changes, additions to your list of activities, and anything else you feel we should know.

It's actually a good one to pre-write because you can use a lot of the answers for other schools' secondary.

uofp57 07-20-2012, 07:01 PM Haven't received this one yet. But the essays look like ones I've written a dozen times already, so shouldn't be too bad.
is loyola's website/application site down for anyone else?
edit: nvm got it. hOLY ethical question loyola! was not expecting that, though I like it much better than the "what do you hope to get out of medicine?" question
081479058 07-21-2012, 11:43 AM I'm not sure if anyone else is having difficulty separating paragraphs, but I found that by inserting this in place of just pressing "return" will give me the desired newline character:
<br />
I am placing two of these between paragraphs.
Good luck to everyone!
Anyone else having issues uploading a photo? I have the right format and everything, but it wont let me click on my jpeg files.... frustrating. Suggestions?

About how many words is 25 lines supposed to be?
my first essay was about 18 lines and it was 1100 characters.
soon2bedoctor 07-21-2012, 12:01 PM This is a pretty beast secondary. Since they are not extending II until September, probably going to hold off on doing this right now.
MooCowJoe 07-21-2012, 02:19 PM Does anyone know what the screen was for getting a secondary?
SoulinNeed 07-21-2012, 04:28 PM This is a pretty beast secondary. Since they are not extending II until September, probably going to hold off on doing this right now.
Wait, so if we didn't get one now, we won't get on until September?
Quigon 07-21-2012, 05:46 PM .
dsk89 07-21-2012, 06:47 PM So the limit of 25 lines per question....is that 25 lines when composed in Word, or 25 lines when pasted into their secondary boxes? The box sizes on the secondary are adjustable, which would change the number of lines....
I have this same question, and also, does AMCAS Letter Service make sure our names and AMCAS ID are on all our letters of rec that we uploaded through them? Because I'm 100% sure my letter writers did not put my AMCAS ID on my letters...
stolen_biscuit 07-22-2012, 08:27 AM Does anyone know what the screen was for getting a secondary?
Not too high. I got one on the 19th, and I'm pretty average. (Check my MDapps.)
LPpostbacc 07-22-2012, 08:37 AM Not too high. I got one on the 19th, and I'm pretty average. (Check my MDapps.)
I'm going to guess that they started sending them out bit by bit later this week, and that no one will get anything today. Probably will start seeing a bunch more tomorrow. Their screens are very low for secondaries (maybe 3.0/25 variety).
MedPR 07-22-2012, 10:17 AM I have this same question, and also, does AMCAS Letter Service make sure our names and AMCAS ID are on all our letters of rec that we uploaded through them? Because I'm 100% sure my letter writers did not put my AMCAS ID on my letters...
If they were uploaded on AMCAS (and not interfolio) it shouldn't be a problem. The AMCAS ID on the letter is mostly so AMCAS can identify which application to upload it to. Schools don't care so long as it gets sent to them by AMCAS.

Agreed, although, if you press "Print my Application", then the application comes up. I had like 35ish-40ish lines when typing it in, but the printed application had like 25ish.

This is what my status says:
As of today, Sunday, July 22, 2012, your application status is:
Application status:
We have received your supplemental application. We ask that you please allow at least one month for downloading letters and completion of your file. Thank you.
I interpret this to mean that no further action on my part is required. The references to a letters inventory may be some legacy reference to a recently changed application procedure?
Goobs 07-22-2012, 08:16 PM So I don't have a non-science faculty LOR, and the supplemental instructions said to explain in the Letter of Rec Inventory Form. Does anyone know where on the form I'm supposed to mention this?
Irish Football 07-22-2012, 08:27 PM I interpret this to mean that no further action on my part is required. The references to a letters inventory may be some legacy reference to a recently changed application procedure?

Before you submit your secondary the last page is the LOR inventory form. It asks you to select between committee letter or 2 science faculty + 1 non-science faculty.

ornitorinco 07-22-2012, 09:57 PM So on question #9, where they ask if we permit them to notify our academic adviser of decisions on our application, does anyone know if we are penalized for answering "no?" I'm a non-trad and it just seems a little strange/irrelevant to me to notify my academic adviser, who I rarely used and don't even know if they are still the adviser at my school.
Thoughts anyone?

I've always said no on this, and I would HOPE you don't get penalized. I don't think you would though, I think universities might just like to hear where some of their students end up, so medical schools will ask.
SoulinNeed 07-22-2012, 10:29 PM I haven't gotten it, but for those who have it, how are you answering the "diversity" question. Yes this is the beast mode secondary
No, the patient with rare disease you have a research project that studies a novel experimental treatment but pt's parents are adamantly against the treatment one.
oh yeah well the 25 lines is a max, not a goal. i'm sure if you've adequately covered the topic in whatever amount of lines you have, it's fine.

MedPR 07-23-2012, 05:28 PM All of my essays except the last one (bring us up to date blah blah blah) were 20-24 lines. My last one was 32.

Must be a minor if the parent's wishes are relevant.

wakeboarder1920 07-24-2012, 07:22 AM It's best not to assume anything. What if the disease resulted in the patient being comatose, and the parents had to make a decision? Keep it broad but concise, as weird as that sounds. I think they do this to discern how you think about the question, or to possibly see how much clinical knowledge you might possess at this stage. If the patient was a minor then they probably would've said that based on my previous statement. I'm happy I took a medical ethics class.

I haven't gotten the email with the secondary yet either. I went to the site posted on this page and entered in my aamc id and it let me log in. My status says :We have received your application from AMCAS and we are currently screening your academic credentials. We will be sending additional information to you within the next few weeks.
Do you think it would be a bad idea to just do the secondary now or should I wait til I get the official invite to do the secondary via email?

Never submit one before you are officially invited to - in some cases they may throw out your application.
You're still ahead of the game.. many people are still waiting for their primaries to be processed so I'm sure you will be fine.
12221989 07-24-2012, 02:45 PM IMHO yes. Just work on the prompts and be ready when it comes.
good luck
Unfortunately you have to pay before you get access to the secondary. I don't want them to see that I paid before I even got officially invited, so it looks like I'm waiting.
edit: They aren't in the OP, but can anyone that has access post the secondary prompts?

cinamin 07-24-2012, 06:57 PM almost ready to submit this secondary off... which turned out to be a life novel.
Question for anyone who is at this stage, when you click 'print app' to preview it, all of my essays turn into blobs, even though I put two lines in between each paragraph like they asked - is anyone having the same issue? it's rather unsightly to just have blobs like that... or maybe that's just how it looks on the print preview, not sure...?

I found that by inserting the characters below in place of just pressing "return" will give me the desired newline character:
<br />
I am placed two of these between paragraphs and it gave me a double space.

hmmm.... I would try googling it. I think the language is HTML. My guess would be to try sequential double/single quotes (example: I said ""hello"" to Mr. Bean instead of I said "hello" to Mr. Bean).
If that doesn't work, you could try this:
double quote: "
single quote:
I don't know for sure that either of those will work though but I googled newline character and guessed what language they used to write the page to figure out what might give me a newline character. I think something similar should work to figure out quotes and apostrophes. Hope that helps!
EDIT: SDN uses HTML - Go here for codes: http://www.ascii.cl/htmlcodes.htm

Wow, thanks for being so helpful!!!!! Do you think it's weird to submit the secondary back within a day? Or do schools generally know that people pre-write essays?

I pre-wrote everything I could and have been returning them as quickly as possible because I think it might be more helpful to get it in quickly. I also think that if it's well written and they don't think you pre-wrote, it could impress them! Or that's what I'm hoping...
Good luck!

Just out of curiosity how have you not gotten in yet?! Your stats and activities look pretty good. Have you been applying to only really top notch schools for 2 years?

Haha, I wish I could say it was my choices in schools... I'll make it brief (if you're more curious I can always send you a PM):
I first applied three years ago--7 schools, 2 interviews, 1 waitlist (at my state school). I spoke to the dean of admissions at the school regarding my application, and he said it was mostly that I had limited clinical experience. At that time, I had only shadowed two physicians and volunteered for four months on an oncology floor at a hospital. He said I should get more clinical experience and consider retaking my MCAT (31 was two points lower than the average matriculant there). Perhaps more significantly, he recommended I sit out a year to improve my application, since back-to-back applications really isn't enough time to improve an application significantly.
Of course, being young and restless, I didn't take his advice and applied the next year. Both schools that interviewed me rejected me pre-interview, and I didn't get any interviews until the end of the school (just one). I emailed the dean again and he basically said, "Well, you did these things [getting clinical experience], but not to the level we wanted to see."
The reality is that he was serious--a year isn't enough time, and if you're a re-applicant, you have a significantly lower chance unless you are really impressive.
It makes sense, but at the time I was pretty skeptical, and I've paid for it. HOWEVER, I've had a TON of incredible opportunities since then in a number of areas, and looking back I'm glad I was rejected--I wasn't ready then, and was pretty bitter, as many of my friends got in, and even some people I mentored on how to prepare for medical school (even people I personally TUTORED!). However, as time has passed I've realized how qualified many applicants are (including my friends and the people I mentored), and am happy they were accepted, because they are truly incredible people with great potential.
But I'm ready now, and more eager than ever to get started on my medical career. I'm incredibly grateful and happy to be where I am, and can only hope admissions committees see that and give me a shot.

Blaughable 08-05-2012, 08:03 PM Hey guys quick question on how to interpret essay 2. It says "Provide in detail an experience of working with individual(s) from diverse background(s)." Does this mean actually working with them as in they are co workers/peers? Or would holding a week long seminar for minority high school students constitute as "working with individuals from diverse backgrounds." I would rather talk about this experience but I could go in either direction.

I think your experience would be a great thing to talk about and would definitely meet the criteria

pasiley 08-06-2012, 07:15 AM For everyone who has not received the secondary. I called the office today and they said that they were still in the process of screening my application and I should hear something in the next week or two.
I was verified early by AMCAS and went out on the first AMCAS batch on 6/29.
I have a feeling I might be screened out. It has to be a holistic screen because my stats are not that far off Loyola's average. Might explain the difference between received and completed.
AMCAS Applications Received 9,846
Completed Applications 5,724
Applicants Interviewed 547
Acceptances Offered 365
Blaughable 08-06-2012, 09:29 AM So any word on how bad it looks to go over the recommended 25 lines? I like to talk..... Also, Is a "line" the same for everyone, regardless of screen resolution/browser? Mine is a bit shorter than one line in Microsoft Word.
starstarie 08-06-2012, 03:20 PM my word counts are currently between 300-400... can anyone else comment on how many words their essays were? I have a feeling mine are a bit too long... They are around 25 lines in word. I heard its ok to go over, but it seem like I'm pushing it a little.

I found that writing in Word in Times New Roman in 11 font was pretty accurate with the line count once I pasted it over.
Pateln381 08-07-2012, 08:45 AM Hello again,
I still haven't received a secondary from Loyola. I have no idea why!!!
I guess I have decent GPA and MCAT. So I don't think it's the screening issue here. What do you guys think?? ... Should I email them now or should I wait for a couple of more days??
btw ... I submitted AMCAS on 6/11. So I don't think I am that late in the cycle either. :(
ornitorinco 08-07-2012, 05:17 PM Okay so my status changed from the "under review" message, to a message saying that the committee had reviewed my application, that interviews ran through April, and that I would be notified by phone or email if I received an interview. I'm assuming this is their "on-hold" status? It kind of seems that way at least....:(
runnergirl90 08-07-2012, 05:41 PM So I uploaded my photo and I got the "your photo has been successfully uploaded" message, but if I click on that upload photo link again it looks as if I haven't uploaded one yet. Is there nothing that says I've uploaded it? Sorry I know this is slightly neurotic but I don't want to mess this up!
EDIT: Nevermind! I found out you can look at it on the "print application part"
giants25 08-07-2012, 05:43 PM I have the same status. I think it just means youve been reviewed. They say they ll contact you by phone and/or email so Im guessing they dont update your status online.
ornitorinco 08-07-2012, 05:47 PM hmm that's a good point, especially since I guess it's still early....unfortunately I just went through a few pages of last year's thread and it looks like it might indeed be a "hold" status. I guess it's impossible to tell and we'll have to wait and see.
they haven't given out any II right? sorry too lazy this early in the mornign to look through the thread

mzell12 08-08-2012, 11:18 AM My status says "pending further review by our Committee on Admissions." I'm not sure what it said before this because I'm just looking for the first time, but I see that others originally had "under review" statuses.
Does this possibly mean "small pooling"?

western1 08-08-2012, 03:58 PM Hey guys, just checking up on the thread and saw some questions, thought I would give some insight. Stritch is in Maywood, a suburb of Chicago. Most first year students live either in Oak Park or Forest Park, and most have cars (but a few don't). Transportation is pretty easy to and from the city.
Also, I know this is a stressful time. Try to remember the office of admissions is small and they individually look over each primary and secondary, so try not to get worked up if you don't hear back right away. They do a great job at selecting awesome students and because of that the review process is thorough and time consuming. Best of luck this cycle.
If you guys have any questions, feel free to PM me I'll do my best to get back to you.

It's funny. I was using Safari, because the instructions specifically said Firefox or Chrome won't work. After trying a few things with no luck, I tried Firefox.
Worked like a charm.

Same. It really puts doubt on whether or not there's something negative in your application. I knew this was going to be a psychological battle, but just knowing about it doesn't really make it that much better.

I would follow instructions and write 25. If they say keep it under 25, then listen, and keep it under 25. Most of mine were well under.
texasholdems 08-13-2012, 01:42 PM how do you pay for this school?
I heard it is 75.00
Do they require you to pay first to open up the secondary?
Or Do they ask at the end of the application (like most schools) to go directly to payment website and pay online using credit card?
Do we pay through mailing check?

Yes, unlike many applications, you have to pay just to access the application. I paid with credit card online.

brbEightball 08-14-2012, 12:43 PM For about half of my essays, every time I try to submit one, the page drops out and the forms are just replaced with simple text reading "PB". I'm pretty sure this is because of essay length, as when I just leave a word or two in the box and continue it saves fine. But I'm getting this error with essays that are only a hundred words in length. I've lost an hour or two to this error, has anyone else encountered or overcame it?
chubbadub 08-14-2012, 01:54 PM Just for those freaking out about statuses, for the past year's cycle "Your application has been reviewed..." isn't necessarily a hold status. I had that status for a month and was given an interview.
However, I did apply much later than average in the cycle due to health issues, so I wasn't interviewed until the last few months in the cycle (just an fyi).
s48jet 08-15-2012, 10:08 AM Hey everyone, I just called the school regarding the issues with the spacing between paragraphs not showing up when the application is printed. They said even though it does not show up on our print screen, it will on their end when they receive the secondary. So don't worry if you do not see spacing between your paragraphs!

You must have a double dash "--" in your response. Take that out. Alternatively, I found that inputting one answer at a time and progressing to the next page and going back circumvents the problem.
mirish 08-15-2012, 07:56 PM Have you noticed that in addition to the 25 line it says in the Supplemental Application document attached to the email: please limit your response to a maximum of two paragraphs for each question. How can you write such a long essay with only two paragraphs?

I'm pretty sure I broke all the rules when I wrote my essays: I did 25 lines on Word, and then just copied and pasted, so I have no idea how many lines they were in the box; and I forgot to do the double-space thing between paragraphs. I'm banking on their kind, Christian mercy.

I used Times New Roman 12 font in word and the lines were exactly the same on the final application. I don't know how it would compare with differing fonts though.
