gettheleadout 03-07-2012, 03:55 PM 1) What have you done to make your community a better place?
2) Optional: Is there anything you want the admissions committee to know about your qualifications for medical school that is not already represented in your application materials? Note: This space is provided for new information only, not to promote qualifications already highlighted in your other materials.
3) Optional: If you have taken courses beyond your bachelor's degree, what was your motivation for doing so? How has this coursework prepared you for your medical education?
Good luck to everyone applying! :luck:
twayz 05-18-2012, 08:25 AM I will be attending OUWB. I had a very hard time deciding whether to attend Wayne or OUWB, so I outlined my reasons for choosing OUWB instead. I hope this will help out future candidates with their decision. I gathered this information after talking to people, reading posts, researching, and visiting both schools.
1. It is nice to become part of the pioneering class to help shape the school. This will help you build strong relationships with the faculty and even the staff at Beaumont. I feel like this would be a tremendous learning experience for OUWB students, something that not every med student gets to experience.
2. They have a strong relationship with Beaumont, a stable and outstanding hospital. I find that this relationship is different from the relationship Wayne has with hospitals. I know Wayne had some issues with 'contract' disputes with the DMC. I do not suspect any issues like this will happen to OUWB because "Beaumont" is part of the medical school's name. Even the LCME found their relationship with Beaumont to be extremely strong.
3. I find Wayne a bit outdated. From their application process to their interviews, I just did not see anything that blew me away. OUWB is more cutting edge in my opinion. Even when I tried to apply for financial aid at Wayne, it said they don't participate in the "online" service. It just seems that Wayne is not evolving that much.
4. I don't think my future residency will be affected because residency is mostly based on board scores and LORs. There are just too many factors to consider than to worry about which medical school someone went to. OUWB's exam questions all come from previous USMLE questions directly from NBME. In addition, they are incorporating a Kaplan course for the entire class for the second year (and paying for it) to help us prepare for the USMLE. (Take a look at the data for yourself: http://www.nrmp.org/data/programresultsbyspecialty.pdf)
5. Their approach to teaching (integrative curriculum and TBL) seems like is going along with the trend among medical schools. I feel that team learning is extremely important. There are so many different specialties that no one doctor can do as much as a team. The medical field is very different than before. Take a look at this video: http://www.cnn.com/2012/05/13/opinio...ors/index.html
6. The location is much nicer than Detroit IMO.
7. Although Beaumont Royal Oak is a community hospital, it is a very large hospital. They see more patients than any hospital in Michigan for a given year. Their emergency room also sees more patients than any single hospital in Michigan.
8. Although I know DMC will train me very well, I have no doubt that Beaumont will do the same because they have a high patient volume for us to experience.
9. Beaumont is ranked nationally in several specialties. However, Harper is ranked a bit higher than Beaumont, but they do not have the type of relationship with Wayne that Oakland has with Beaumont.
10. As for research, I am not concerned because Beaumont has a Research Center that is fully accredited. Although there is much more research in Detroit, Beaumont physicians and researchers do publish in top journals in several fields.
11. There will be a new medical student lounge within Beaumont Royal Oak just for OUWB students (separate from residents). In addition, Oakland is building a new anatomy lab and a new student lounge. All these will be brand new.
12. At OUWB, I feel like the experience would be superior because you actually get to go to the hospital once a week, you are required to attend most of your classes (you can still skip) which will help you stay on top of things and get to know your classmates, the class size is small helping with individualizing attention, and you will be in a very nice area.
13. Although this is not as important but worth to note. OUWB's inaugural class had some impressive stats. Their mean MCAT (32) was 1 point higher than Wayne's. This is the highest MCAT for an inaugural recent US medical school I have seen so far. I looked at stats for previous MD schools that opened up in the 2000s and they where all sub 30.
14. OUWB staff will listen to you. They also are very quick to getting back to you. I feel that they care a lot about their students and school. Moreover, the dean has already established some very unique programs for students from establishing ties to the Oakland County medical examiner’s office to working with high schools around the area for them to get a glimpse of the medical profession. I just did not get the same vibe at Wayne.
15. I don't think that just because Wayne is established, it will affect your choice of residency. The LCME does not just accredit any school. All US medical schools are good. They all go through the same rigorous accreditation process. Even established schools can go on probation. They can also lose contracts with hospitals as we have seen with Wayne. It does not guarantee anything. USMLE scores are far more important. Moreover, I feel that because OUWB students will be at Beaumont so often at their first year, they will establish relationships with many of the physicians (and program directors). This may help them when applying for residency. It seems that many Wayne graduates are looking to do their residency at Beaumont.
16. Also, from what I heard, OUWB will be establishing relationships with nursing homes in order to get students with more clinical experience. At Wayne, you have the free clinics in the area.
16. Lastly, because this is medical school we are talking about, it mostly comes down to where you think you will be happy. If this were law school, reputation and where you go will matter A LOT. However, when comparing two similar schools with quite similar stats, the deciding factor should be EXPERIENCE. I felt like OUWB will provide a superior experience. If we were comparing OUWB to Michigan, it would probably be a better idea to go to Michigan because there is a huge difference in the prestige here.
Wayne still is an excellent school, but I feel like OUWB is a better fit for me. I am by no means trying to make Wayne look bad, but am rather summing up my experience from talking to people and researching. I just do not see any reason to go to Wayne over OUWB. Goodluck!
LPpostbacc 05-18-2012, 09:25 AM Can you try that again when you have something a bit more substantial to add??

Amazing post. These were the reasons I had chosen OUWB until I was accepted to my first choice Canadian MD school.
I will put this out there to anyone who wants to know, I will be lurking around as often as I can to answer your questions.
I will try my best to answer. Amanda will be around I'm sure :)
Good luck to everyone. :luck:

LPpostbacc 06-25-2012, 08:28 PM I'm always checking back just in case applicants have questions! :)
How have you found the atmosphere to be among your fellow classmates, Amanda?
Have you enjoyed living in Oakland?
I think you write a blog, no? Very informative stuff you've written, if so, thanks!!
amandaeleven 06-26-2012, 05:51 PM How have you found the atmosphere to be among your fellow classmates, Amanda?
One of the greatest strengths of OUWB is the true sense of community among the students, faculty and staff. We're all essentially one big family . Of course our class tends to aggregate into little groups, but we all are still really supportive and friendly toward one another. Furthermore, the curriculum is set up to foster a collaborative environment and I'd say it worked well!
Have you enjoyed living in Oakland?
I'm originally from Oakland County so it's kind of like being back home. However, having lived in a couple of different places, I can understand why some applicants might be concerned about living in suburbia... in my opinion, I'd rather not live in a huge city and be distracted by all the awesome stuff I could be doing while I'm studying. But, yes, there are times when suburbia can seem stifling.
I think you write a blog, no? Very informative stuff you've written, if so, thanks!!
I do write a blog [see my signature]! I'm glad you find it informative and keep in mind that I'm always looking for new questions to dedicate entries to!
Good luck with your application cycle! :)

virtuoso735 07-01-2012, 11:54 AM For the "What have you done to make your community a better place" question, are you guys talking only about one experience, or will you talk about more than one?
I don't want it to sound like I am just restating my resume in paragraph form, but then I feel like if I only write about one activity (but more in-depth), it might not be enough. What should I do?

I'm having trouble with this as well. I feel like I'm restating a lot of my Work/Activities section of my AMCAS, and I think that's a pretty lame secondary response. Anyone else having these issues?
KS FightinIrish 07-02-2012, 10:13 PM Idk, I'm trying to use my international experience but I think it's a bit of a stretch to help the international community. What a dumb question. I kind of want to say "See primary application"

Our school has a pretty heavy emphasis on community outreach - this question gives you the opportunity to expand on your AMCAS activities. If you can't find a way to answer it, we might not be the best option for you.
Good luck!

just walk into the admissions office with a suit on and sit there quietly. When they ask you why you're there just tell them that you have an interview. They'll get confused and interview you. It's a genius plan, what could possibly go wrong??

Is there something specific adcomms wanna hear for these?

My friend and I didn't even fill that out and we both have interviews here ... so I don't think it's a necessary prompt by any means.

Only ~23 invites as of 7/23...I'm surprised how few they have offered thus far!
Pirates1992 07-24-2012, 11:14 AM It does seem like they're offering based off when your secondary was marked complete. I wasn't complete for a few days after the people who already received interviews, and I assume other people were complete later due to the July 4th holiday, so I think we'll start to see more roll out here in the next few days.
LPpostbacc 07-24-2012, 05:54 PM That's actually really cool that they show that. I wish more schools would do that.
Agreed. Very cool.
Procyon 07-25-2012, 10:48 AM If you have taken courses beyond your bachelor's degree, what was your motivation for doing so? How has this coursework prepared you for your medical education?

IonClaws 07-27-2012, 06:04 PM For the "What have you done to make your community a better place" question, are you guys talking only about one experience, or will you talk about more than one?
I don't want it to sound like I am just restating my resume in paragraph form, but then I feel like if I only write about one activity (but more in-depth), it might not be enough. What should I do?
I talked about more than one experience as the "community" (in the local and/or regional sense) is made up of a lot of different individuals, and there are many ways one can make one's community a better place.
You could talk about a couple of your activities that relate to making the community better so that you're not stretching one activity too far or just making a list of activities (in other words, find a balance).
After you've selected them, discuss what you did, but also elaborate to the extent necessary to illustrate specific actions that made your community better - then, explain how your community improved.
twayz 07-29-2012, 09:53 AM I am wondering if I should add this school. Are they oos friendly and are they very competitive? Are they receptive to updates?
The school is OOS friendly. I believe about 40% is OOS for the 2016 class. Also, since they are a private school, they do not have any preference for IS or OOS students. They are receptive to updates. I believe you can now update them directly through their admissions website once they send you login information. And I believe their mean MCAT (according to MSAR) was a 32. Their mean GPA was somewhere around a 3.7
Good luck!

Optional: Is there anything you want the admissions committee to know about your qualifications for medical school that is not already represented in your application materials? Note: This space is provided for new information only, not to promote qualifications already highlighted in your other materials.
Do you think something should be written here no matter what? I don't want to go against the directions and restate things I've already said but I also feel bad leaving something blank that I could use to help my application. It sounds like they really don't want people to write anything here unless there's something new and relevant that wasn't put on AMCAS so I'm leaning toward leaving it blank but I want to know what are you all thinking for this optional essay?

I don't have any clear answer for you, but I wrote a small essay on how I faced and overcame certain adversities in my life and how I have learned and matured from my experiences. I ended up getting an interview invite 3 weeks later, so I'm assuming they were OK with it.

I didn't write anything and got an interview invite, so I don't think it will affect your outcome very much unless you omit something very important or write something completely off subject. I guess the point is to write something if you think the admissions office should really know about it and if it hasn't been mentioned before.

Did you fill out your application already? Last year, I used the "additional information" section to mention this. I did send an update post-interview but just knowing how friendly there office is, I think something substantial and not BS like grades would be something they would welcome as an update pre-interview.

I'm flying into DTW on Thursday. I've heard taxis can be somewhere between 60-80 dollars one way to get to Rochester, and that renting a car may be a better option. So I think I may just rent a car when I get there
OUWB says that the interview day should end around 4:30PM on Friday, so if you left immediately at 4:30, you would get to the airport around 5:30? You might be cutting it a little bit close
Virtuoso, PM me, maybe we can coordinate something for getting to Oakland?

I doubt that there would be a shuttle specifically designated for OU as this is kind of far away and somewhat of an obscure destination to have a shuttle for (although I may be wrong) ... but I would definitely try to look into renting a car, because as people have said, this route may turn out to be cheaper.

I'd ask Admissions to see if they can help with coordinating a shuttle/taxi from OUWB to the airport after the interview. Last year, I remember 4 or 5 people splitting a taxi right after the interview straight to the airport.

Very nice interview day.
I agree, the people were very friendly and interested in getting to know you. Everyone seemed to care about the applicants, and even bothered to learn everyone's names out of a group of twenty-some people by the end of the day.
This school definitely moved up quite a bit on my list after today!
virtuoso735 08-24-2012, 07:10 PM For those that interviewed, it would be great to have a brief breakdown of the day, and comments about the interview itself. Were they one on one? Panel? I'll answer based on my own experience.
The day started out with some general information about the medical school and then a team-based learning exercise (which has no weight on your admission process, it's just to get a feel for TBL at OUWB). We also had a tour of OU in Rochester.
We then migrated to the Royal Oak and had two 30 minute one-on-one interviews as well as a tour of the hospital.
My first interview was very conversational and application-based. My second one was more of a clinical ethics one, with some moral/ethical questions as well as some application-based things. I think it heavily depends on what the interviewer wants to talk about. Overall though, they are both pretty relaxed and stress-free, and this is also what other people that I interviewed with thought. From what I gathered, the people here really care about their current and future medical students, so that was a pretty great thing to see! Everyone seemed very happy, from the admissions staff, to the physicians and the current medical students.

Nino013 09-01-2012, 03:36 PM Xroc's description is much more eloquent than mine will be. Also his is mostly positives about the day...for balance and clarity, i'll brain dump what i found to be the negatives -- some might be nitpicking (which i feel will help eliminate any unwelcome surprises and improve your experience as future interviewees):
Day starts very early (i.e. told to be there by 7:45...which means most were there around 7:30. Yuck!)
A lot of day is spent in a study room in the library, doing introductions, listening and TBL'ing... the library isn't bad. But i wish the SOM had a freestanding and independent building just for them. Sharing library and space with undergrads is kind of a downer.
The interview group was the largest i have seen... 20+ peeps. You will be required to stand up and briefly talk about yourself, while feigning interest about the 18th hard science major in a row (yuck again).
The tour is a good bit of walking outdoors...this is rough in a full suit in the hot sun.
TBL has several steps and takes about 45 minutes. Personally, i was not a fan. It is well-developed and i can see the value they try to attribute to it. But it really sounds inefficient and like a time sink. That said, most schools now have PBL/group work implemented, so what can you do?
Lecture attendance is mandatory [in a sense]... if you drop below ~70% attendance it will hurt your grade, iirc. HUGE downside in my book.
The shuttle to the hospital for us was about 40 minutes. This can be a bit hot if ur sitting in a full suit, in a window seat in the sun, surrounded by 20+ people. Also this lends itself to a lot of small talk that you may/may not want.
The interviews from my own experience and others i talked to seem to be a mixed bag. One of mine was with a very cheerful doc that was praising everything about me, the other was with a much more serious doc that grilled me on my research and EC's.
Lastly, as a small school, there isnt much of a collegiate sports scene worth cheering for...if you're into that kind of thing. And the Lions? Sigh.
All those negatives said, I enjoyed the overall experience and feel that OUWB will be a nice school to attend. The staff/faculty were very kind, beaumont has great opportunities and i loved the areas of auburn hills/royal oak.
I could see myself here if the $$$ is right.
More or less I agree with this from my own experience as well.
Daenerys 09-02-2012, 04:09 PM Thank you for posting your experiences, it will definitely help future interviewers.

RachelElizabeth 09-05-2012, 07:28 PM Is anyone interviewing on 9/21?
I'm freaking out a little about how expensive transportation is from the airport. I get in around 11:30PM on 9/20 and am staying at the Courtyard Marriott listed on the interview page, if anyone wants to split a cab from the airport to the Marriott, let me know!

Mind posting a quick rundown of the day and how you felt throughout the whole thing? Did the interviewers grill you on anything specific?

Its basically the same as on their website.
My interviewers really wanted to know about my community activities and also teamwork.
Other than that the normal why medicine, why Oakland.

Seems pretty relaxed. How many other interviewees were at the interview?
23MD2017 09-10-2012, 05:55 PM I will be interviewing this Friday, Sept 14th! I was wondering if anyone else will be there as well and would like to split a cab ride/car rental or any other mode of transportation cost with me? I will be arriving FNT airport around 2 pm on Thursday, Sept 13th and would like to get to my hosts apartment in Royal Oak around 5 - 5:30pm.
Anyone interested in sharing some form of transportation from FNT airport to OUWB with me on Sept 13th ?
berkeleygrad89 09-11-2012, 09:51 AM Hello All,
Apologies if I'm posting this incorrectly, but this is my first post on SDN! I've actually tried to stay away from SDN for the bulk of my admissions process-- it can get daunting.
I submitted my secondary app for OUWSM on 8/8 and received an interview invitation on 9/11.
I was wondering if any of your have any advice on the interview? Also, on more logistical parameters, any suggestions on hotels nearby? I'll be coming from Boston.
Thanks guys! Would appreciate any help! :)

joshb003 09-11-2012, 09:58 AM Yay!
Just got my interview invite last night! Will be heading there on Oct 5th!
So far it's only my second interview invite, and I'm very excited about the opportunity :).
futuredr08 09-12-2012, 10:50 AM I'm also interviewing on October 5th.
Coming from California, if anyone wants to split transportation (car/shuttle/taxi) on the 4th from the airport, let me know. Havent booked my flight yet, but will within the next two days.
dsk89 09-13-2012, 09:43 PM If OUWB is anticipating interviewing about 465 applicants by the end of the year, does anyone have any idea how many acceptances they could potentially be offering out of those? I was randomly on the Emory thread and noticed that according to US News they accepted about half the people they interviewed. If a more "established" legacy school such as Emory accepts half, would a relatively newer medical school such as OUWB offer more than 50% acceptances to their interviewees?
Pirates1992 09-14-2012, 08:24 AM If OUWB is anticipating interviewing about 465 applicants by the end of the year, does anyone have any idea how many acceptances they could potentially be offering out of those? If a more "established" legacy school such as Emory accepts half, would a relatively newer medical school such as OUWB offer more than 50% acceptances to their interviewees?
During one of the interview presentations they talked about extending under 190 acceptances for the 75 person class (said plainly: under 3-1 acceptance offers-matriculation ratio for current M1s), after having to extend over 150 for their inaugural 50 person class (over 3-1 ratio for current M2s) ... numbers may not be 100% accurate but the ratios are. They're getting a lot of positive feedback nationally over curriculum, teaching strategies and the like so I expect they'll be around a 2-1 acceptance offers-matriculation ratio this year.
Interview day was awesome, but as others said... it's quite long. You have to do two tours, since the hospital and the campus are about a 30 minute drive apart. Hospital is obviously the star of the show, (for those who are out of state, Beaumont is a very very highly respected hospital) but overall the program seems very well thought out.
Interviews are with clinicians at Beaumont and are super low stress. General "Why medicine" or "expand on your AMCAS" or things you basically are preparing for anyways. No ethical questions... at least for me.
The fact that there hasn't been an M3 class yet is a little troubling, but I guess Beaumont was an internal rotation spot for M3/M4s at Wayne so there's at least a skeleton in place on how things should run. I guess the M2 Wayne kids are SOL next year for Beaumont, and after that it becomes an external rotation spot so that definitely dumps Wayne down in my book (personal opinion). They also say its best to have a car, and driving all over the place can get annoying.
Overall, love the school. Can't wait til the 16th!
jjgoomba27 09-18-2012, 04:06 PM hey I'm arriving at DTW on the 20th at 1:30pm. Anyone willing to split a cab with me?
Irish Football 09-18-2012, 06:21 PM Wow, I just got rejected from OUWB. Crazy. I have suspicion that they never received my second MCAT since I applied to this school really early and may have been marked complete before I indicated I was going to retake. I mean it's really scary to think that I got rejected this early with a 35!! Is there something else wrong with my application?! Maybe I should call tomorrow and find out if they ever received that second score.

Don't sweat it. I was rejected from a school that was well below my lizzyM score very early on while they gave interview invites to people with less clinical experience and little to no community service.
Med schools work in strange ways.

Sorry to hear that. From my interview experience here last month, they seemed to genuinely do a holistic review of their applicants. I think they first look to see if you have the numbers to succeed at their school and medical school in general, and then beyond that they are most focused on how much of a "fit" you are for their school. They are very driven by community service and serving the underserved, so if you had solid experiences in your EC's that encompassed such goals of their school, then you likely would have gotten an II. If not, then they probably perceived you as "not a good fit" for their school. That's just my two cents. I hope you get plenty of II's elsewhere! Good luck!

I'm really sorry to hear that. As other posters said, it's probably just them being picky about "fit" because it's hard to believe they'd reject a 35! It probably wouldn't hurt to call and ask them about the MCAT scores. Either way, I'm sure you'll have plenty of luck at other places! If you don't mind, could you please share when you were complete?

That's the thing, I'm not really sure when I was complete because I submitted the secondary in early July and it was "complete" a few days later and the status page stayed the same all the way through my listing my expected second testing date and then when the second scores were available in August. That's why I'm going to call tomorrow.

Irish Football 09-19-2012, 06:55 AM Okay I just called the admissions office, unfortunately they DID have both scores on file when they decided to reject me. The lady said the same thing as you guys, that I shouldn't let it scare me into thinking there is a problem with my app, rather OUWB does a "holistic" review, as you guys have said.
Well, I'm glad I called for my own peace of mind. Time to forget about this school, good luck to all those who are still in the running!

Well there's a couple things to note.
A) OOS. While they're a private, they still have a preference for IS applicants (http://www.oakland.edu/?id=19505&sid=340). If someone has the US News stats, those may be more revealing for or against my argument. (Also, I know OU says they have no preference on their website, but as an applicant I can only see the numbers and not the discussions behind the decisions.)
B) As other people said, it isn't only about MCAT. GPA and sGPA can be a huge factor (even with a strong upwards trend). Often there's other things schools look for. If every school had the same criteria then a handful of students would receive interviews at every school and other applicants would be immediately rejected from every one. I've seen profiles of 38+/3.9 being rejected from schools after receiving interviews at Harvard, WashU, and the like.
Personally, I'm IS with similar numbers, and I haven't heard diddly squat from them (pretty sure I'm on hold). As med school applicants, we all have to, sadly, accept that each school views us differently. Best of luck on your other applications though. You still have a lot of great schools left!

Just wanted to reply to this - they haven't had a chance to post the M1 class stats, but there is a significant shift in the IS/OOS ratio that reflects our non-preference for IS vs OOS. Also consider the situation for the charter class - not only was the number of IS applicants higher, it's much more likely for someone from the area to want to stay in the area and thus be part of our inaugural class than someone from out of state to decide to relocate to Rochester for a brand new school [even though our hospital is highly ranked and well-respected in MI, many OOS students don't necessarily know that].
Anyway, good luck!

The schedule they gave us (I interviewed on August 24th, which was the first Interview Day) ended at 4:30 PM, and they really do try hard to keep to schedule. But I think because of some roads closed near the school on our way back to OU from Beaumont, we ended up getting back around 4:45. I think you can make your 6:40pm flight(even if it doesn't get delayed), just make sure you leave as soon as you get back to OU.

I was complete mid-July and got an interview invite mid/late August, so it took a little over a month for me. However, it's a little later in the cycle now so I would imagine they have more applications to look at, so I would guess it will take a little longer for interview invites.

I'm under 25, so it will probably end up being more expensive. Unless someone wants to split the cost with me...

You might be able to take cab to dearborn train station and take Amtrak to Birmingham or Pontiac.
Train fare is cheap and there is an evening train that runs up that way. Not sure if you can take SMART bus to OU but is there a hotel with free shuttle or student host who lives in that area? Just a couple ideas. Not sure it would be much cheaper.
virtuoso735 09-24-2012, 01:17 PM I will probably just end up taking a cab since I'll be arriving around 8:00pm and I'll be tired and cranky from all the flying.
Should I bring a nice folder/portfolio, or does OUWB provide us with one?
ETA: I also see that there are two one-on-one interviews. What is the set up like? Is one a physician and one a member of the faculty? Are any of the interviewers students? I'm not sure why there are two interviews. Do they focus on different areas?

Don't assume just yet that you've been silently rejected. I was complete early July and received an II at the end of July. So if it took me 3-4 weeks to receive an II that early in the cycle, then you will likely be waiting longer for an II since you were complete later when they probably have a lot more apps to sift through.

Definitely stings since I thought I was a good fit here... not sure why I didn't at least get put on hold? I guess they simply have a lot of really great candidates from Michigan. Although it is nice that they got back to me with a definitive answer so quickly. I wish you all the best of luck! For those of you that eventually get in here, CONGRATS, this school is awesome.

Some times I feel like the interview process is all about luck. I've gotten rejected to schools that I thought for sure would interview me, and interviews by schools I thought would definitely reject me.
Good luck with the rest of the admissions cycle.

They said the first day they will be sending out acceptances is oct 16th. Then the committee will meet again on oct 17th if our applications don't get reviewed before the 16th. They told us that if we don't hear back on the 17th, that they will have another committee meeting on oct 31st so we might hear back from them on that date if our application wasn't reviewed on the 16th or 17th.

virtuoso735 09-29-2012, 11:54 AM Just had my interview yesterday. OUWB's interview day was very well done I thought. The presentations were great and convincing, and the hospital was cool too. We didn't really get to see the new medical school building since it's still under construction, but it looks like it will be amazing when it is finished. OUWB really seems to care about its students.
The interviews themselves were relaxed and conversational. There were a lot of standard questions and questions about activities and background. I had two interviews with MD's, with a half hour break in between.

I was complete in July and still haven't gotten a decision. Every school is giving me the silent treatment. I guess the mystery is better than a right-away rejection, but I hope it's not a silent rejection. haha

monicawannab 10-05-2012, 08:26 PM Does anyone know any of Oakland's past interview/acceptance ratios?
it seems like they're planning to offer roughly 2.5x more acceptances than class size (so ~250), and with a total of 465 interviews, basically 1 in every 2 applicants interviewed will be accepted.
"May the odds be ever in your favor!" (sorry, couldn't help myself)
dsk89 10-06-2012, 12:21 PM 1 out of 2 isnt bad!
just 10 more days till they start comin'…!

joshb003 10-08-2012, 09:44 AM For everyone interviewing at OUWB.
You will love it! Was a great day, they had good presentations, fun exercises, and great food. Additionally the Beaumont tour was fantastic! That hospital is amazing.
The only downside is having to travel the 30 minutes to get to the Beaumont, but the trip is worth it. You can really tell the school is "student centered" as they state, because they really go out of their way to make you comfortable etc. They even had escorts to bring us to our interview so that we didn't get lost.
After interviewing at OUWB, I definitely recommend the school. They have great facilities, and a very unique & interesting curriculum that includes integrated learning & a capstone project.
I AM anxiously awaiting an admissions decision.
**To everyone receiving rejections, sorry to hear about that!! Good luck with your other applications
After interviewing and hearing about their Holistic review process, I really believe that OUWB examines the entire application and not just MCAT/GPA. Although those factors are very important.
They seem to value service, leadership experiences, & clinical experiences.

FutureDO132169 10-12-2012, 08:11 PM Hey guys I was just curious if applying to OU would be worth my time. I graduated from OU, 26Q, 3.5 sGPA, masters degree in biomedical sciences, 5000 clinical hours, 250 shadowing, 1300 volunteering and EC, VP of my masters program, IS applicant.. I just didn't know if I would be wasting my time since my MCAT isn't in the 30s.. Thanks for your thoughts

And I think phone calls will be going out over the week. That's my guess at least. I don't know how many they accept the first round, but I would think it could be time-consuming to try to call everyone in one day, so it'll probably be spread out.

Should we expect them to be finished with all interviewees up to 9/14? Or is it random like they said? Or do they mean the calls are random (not in order)?
Hopefully by tomorrow they finish 9/14 and 9/21 tomorrow and move on to 9/28 too.

By the sound of the tweet, they have sent their initial offers for those that have interviewed up until 9/14. We're still in the pool if you interviewed before 9/14, but we didn't get one of the initial offers.

I see. I'm 9/28 so I hope I'm in one of the initial offers.
Did any of the accepted applicants send in a letter of interest before hearing back? I don't want to sound pushy, but I don't want to hurt my chances by not sending one in.

Yea I think they've reviewed up until 9/14, and made some of their initial offers today. I think they will continue reviewing tomorrow from 9/14 and after, and offer more acceptances (whether they are offering to people past 9/14 or still from the pool of all applicants I'm not sure- but I'm hoping its the latter..). But I think the "random" order was meant in terms of the phone calls. They probably review applicants based on the day they interview, but offer acceptances randomly and out of order of interview days. Well...here's hoping for tomorrow I guess

I did not send a letter, if I recall correctly they said that letters don't really play a role until the end of the cycle but I may be mistaken. I don't think it would necessarily "hurt" your chances if you send one though.
