I'll let you know next month when I move. Regardless, OSU established itself as my top choice amongst the schools I interviewed at and I am very, very thankful to have been accepted.

If I may ask, what made OSU your top choice?

Nothing that probably cannot be found at other schools, however I just felt like OSU was a great package. Top notch facilities, extensive alumni network, reputable name, in-state tuition for years 2-4 (if you're out-of-state), semi-metropolitan area, Big Ten football, etc... I also saw very eye-to-eye with my faculty interviewer which I am sure reinforced my interest. Most schools I interviewed at had a lot of positive attributes, but OSU just felt like the best place for me... hopefully I don't wind up eating those words over the next four years.

Osu traditionally takes upwards of fifty percent OOS. After first year you can qualify for IS tuition.

We love out of staters. Cincinnati does, too.

I don't think you have an edge because you're Asian, but your GPA looks great. You could apply just to see what happens?

Nah dude that's just a security thing. Basically you have 24 hours to activate your account with that code. So just do it now, and register for your account username/password (which you will subsequently use to connect to the site)

Correct me if I am wrong, but I'm guessing by your questions you are trying to find the angle adcoms are coming from in asking question #2 and an idea of what they are looking for in a response. This is just my opinion, but adcoms can smell BS a mile away, so answering these secondary questions and eventually interview questions according to what you truly believe will yield much better results than some attempt to psychoanalyze and regurgitate what you think adcoms want to hear.

The class of 2016 had a prereq. of anatomy before matriculation, I am pretty sure.

You can take it anytime before class starts and do not need to have it done before submitting secondaries/interviewing/getting accepted.

Last year they allowed people to take it on-line through WVU. They're pretty flexible about it, don't stress.

Hmmm... This could become a very sticky situation.

I mean, I would only take the course if accepted because I do not want to spend $500 or w/e it is for a community college or online cause, as I already graduated, just in hopes of matriculating here. But think about if you were accepted off the alternate list after the last summer anatomy class began. I guess if you were waitlisted you would have to take the course in the summer just in case - given you have no other acceptances or would prefer to matriculate to OSU over any other acceptances.

Interesting

Without any sign of confirmation and still being able to edit my secondary, I'm curious if it "submitted" or not. I see the pending charge on my CC statement, but that's about it for my evidence.

Anyone else have same experience?

Describe one or more experiences where you collaborated or worked as part of a team with people of different racial, ethnic and/or socioeconomic backgrounds and/or belief systems than your own. What impact did this experience(s) have on you? (600 words or less)

I mean that there was no impediment that would be an agent for change, either positively or negatively. Working with different ethnicities felt exactly like working with anyone else, in my experience. Maybe I didn't work with many very cultural people. In order for working with other cultures to influence me, it must feel different from working with common cultures.

Well, my school is very diverse and we have a lot of international students and what not, but I didn't notice anything different when working with them lol. The only cultural experiences you have are related to other students in your school?

How about populations that you share hardly anything in common with? Maybe tutoring kids in poor neighborhoods or working with migrant latino workers? I mean, if you go work in a predominantly african american neighborhood in a lower socioeconomic part of town you'll see more than a majority of families that consist of mainly grandparents or even just single moms working two or more jobs with no father figures, in which kids are dependent on state services. You can bet their value systems concerning education and health are far different from your average indian, asian, or caucasian family made of your prototypical two parents and two kids in a nice little suburb. You're going to have to relate to ALL of these people in the clinic. You need to somehow show adcoms you can do that successfully.

Columbus itself is an extremely diverse city, especially for the midwest. Some of OSU's care point clinics are in upscale, pretty much rich caucasian only neighborhoods (like in Dublin, Hilliard, etc.) Some clinics are in predominantly african american (like OSU east clinics). Some are in rural Ohio (like the Marysville clinics). You will see extremely diverse cultures in all of those areas, different value systems for the worth or health care, religion, education, diets, etc. You can't brush aside cultural differences, it is going to have a huge impact on patient care.

The fact that they changed the wording of last year's question #3 from "describe any experiences..." to "describe experiences where you collaborated or worked as part of a team..." is interesting. Does this mean that working at a welfare office and teaching kids from poor neighborhoods doesn't count? Because stuff like that isn't really teamwork or collaboration. I'm confused as to how to answer this otherwise.

I usually subscribe to the idea that the more unnecessary stuff adcoms read on your file the less attentive they become. That being said, it does seem lacking to have 100 words on a 600 max prompt. How would you expand on it beyond the things I said without repeating and going into information the prompt doesn't ask for?

No you don't sound mean, but I don't agree with you. Social justice isn't a hard topic to grasp and I've had plenty of real life experience with it, and it's constantly being brought up in politics. I just don't see the prompt asking me to go in depth and analyze it like a philosophical paper would. I chose to keep it neat and simple rather than keep writing without necessity to add extra words.

Either way, I submitted so godspeed to us all. :luck:

I appreciate your input and am sure you have good intentions, but giving this info to a bunch of pre-meds who will say whatever an adcom wants to hear, thus not giving a genuine response, is not a good thing. As we speak, plenty of people are changing their answers to say exactly what you just told them. Do you really think someone is going to leave their genuine answer the same if it doesn't align with the information you just provided? There are so many factors going into this admissions process, so for those of us who already wrote and submitted genuine essays that reflect what you said, how do we stand out from those who will just BS it now that you have given the answer? You are an adult, it is your post, and I cant tell you what to do with it, but I think you should erase it for the sake of being fair in one aspect of admissions that is fair (expressing our genuine feeling on a prompt) and for the sake of your school which I am sure would like to admit people who genuinely fit in that group of social justice advocates, not just people who regurgitate the correct answer despite being everything but a social justice advocate.

Having read your initial message from the adcom, I'm just going to say that flat out, the way the prompt was written did not point me as an applicant in the right direction. I read it over and over, and had a lot of my friends, including some philosophy majors, and no one came to the conclusion of what the adcom is looking for. It read it as, "what is the CONCEPT of social justice", versus what I guess they intended which was what are real world implications. I think it would have been a great secondary prompt if it was written more clearly and I would have had a great time writing it!

Oh well, life goes on.

There are certain aspects of this process that give advantages we cannot control such as knowing an adcom, being a legacy, URM status, etc. I dont see the problem with people speculating about the essay and helping each other, but do you really think it is fair that everyone would change their essay to the correct answer? There are people who already submitted and people not on SDN who do not have that luxury. It would be one thing if the student gave us guidance on how to approach the question or a better understanding of the prompt, but it was not that. It was THE answer...the exact answer adcoms are looking for. If you don't see the problem with this then I can't help you. I told the student he/she can do whatever he/she want with the post since he/she is grown and then it was taken down...not my decision, but the right one nonetheless.

I agree that if you already submitted it's fine. Just like me, it was reassuring to know my values align with what they are looking for in a student. But for the others who dont see the issue, there is a difference between your values aligning with the school's desires in an applicant and regurgitating BS because you know the answer even though it does not reflect who you truly are. I am not saying this is you, because you may be exactly what they are looking for, but there are plenty of other people out there who do not connect with those values but will say they do.

no, he did not give THE answer. THE answer comes from personal experiences proving your understanding of other cultures/struggles. he gave us guidance on how to answer -- show you have an awareness that not everyone lives like you. it wasn't anything profound.

What Bender Offender said was nothing new or profound, nor "the answer." It was literally what every person applying to medical school should know and if you can't glean what Bender Offender said from the question then I have no idea how you passed verbal reasoning on the MCAT. (dead serious)

The bottom line is to talk about your experiences as the adcoms could probably care less if you could write a philosophy paper on the differences, they want to see that you personally understand social justice, have some experience with it, and that you have advocated for it.

no, he did not give THE answer. THE answer comes from personal experiences proving your understanding of other cultures/struggles. he gave us guidance on how to answer -- show you have an awareness that not everyone lives like you. it wasn't anything profound.

you said it was reassuring for you to "know" you'd answered it correctly, but you don't think others deserve the same. stop acting so noble.

Haha i'm not acting noble. There is a difference between feeling reassurance after submission and getting the answer before submission. I already submitted last week. It's like asking your professor the answer to a question after an exam and you realize you got it correct so it is reassuring vs. asking the professor for the answer during the test and using that information to mark the correct answer/changing your incorrect answer to the correct one. You say it's not THE answer and that someone has to have personal experiences to back it up. We're talking about neurotic pre-meds trying to get into a difficult field and would do just about anything to get into ANY school. Do you really think a lack of experience is going to keep someone from crafting an essay that displays that they do have this experience? Are they just going to withdraw their application because they don't have the experience to answer the question? Come on, let's be real. Anyways, its over, if people see it they do, if they don't they don't. I won't be discussing it any further and we can agree to disagree. Good luck.

I submitted my secondary yesterday morning. Because of the quick turnaround, I am not sure if they even read it yet. (I'll let everyone else debate this, haha). It may be that my strong primary/stats (4.0/40) ensured me an interview.

I think this is a valid argument based on last year's prompts, but this year specifically asks for collaboration/teamwork. I did not interpret that as doing things FOR people who are different than you (teaching, volunteering, etc). It sounds like they want to see how well you work on a diverse team.

THE answer comes from personal experiences proving your understanding of other cultures/struggles. he gave us guidance on how to answer -- show you have an awareness that not everyone lives like you. it wasn't anything profound.

The bottom line is to talk about your experiences as the adcoms could probably care less if you could write a philosophy paper on the differences, they want to see that you personally understand social justice, have some experience with it, and that you have advocated for it.

Huh. I didn't see the post, but I can garner from these that I did not remotely answer it correctly. That does not mean I cannot answer the question or that I don't have experience in that department. I also had others read it, and no one (myself included) could figure out the gist. I went out on a limb and discussed advocacy and what my future plans are on that front. Disappointing to find out they are looking for something unstated. I submitted it quite unclear on that front.

Just got this email...

The current secondary application to the Ohio State University College of Medicine contains a question about social justice that was unfortunately worded in a way that is confusing. This was a proofreading error on our part. We will be updating the application for this cycle, and this question will not appear on the newer secondary application.

If you have already submitted your secondary application and answered this question, do not worry. This question will not be evaluated. We apologize sincerely for the inconvenience.

Interesting, well as it's no longer an issue, here's the answer that people were trying to keep from sdn.

From the bender guy:

I'm entering Ohio State as a Med 1 this August. I was intrigued by this question (as it wasn't a question for us last year), so I went and talked to the admissions committee people about why they choose it and what the purpose of the question was.

Basically, there are a few applicants (you would be surprised) that don't really understand the problems of the world beyond their daily issues. They don't know about starvation, epidemics, or water shortages, let alone relatively 'minor' inconveniences such as poverty, lack of living space, and lack of education. There's another category of people that understand that these problems exist, yet refuse to acknowledge that it's their responsibility and duty to do something about it. After that, there's a group of individuals that understand these problems and understand that something must be done about them, but haven't yet done anything themselves. Lastly, there's a few people out there that may or may not have actually faced this issues themselves, but definitely have a in-depth understanding of the afflictions of poverty and the social injustice associated with having been born into a much poorer situation than the people (such as us) that live life in great comfort in developed countries. This last group has also done something, anything, to shift the balance, from sending food packages to other countries to volunteering their time to help create a better living situation for impoverished people, and so on.

You need to show that you're in the last group. You need to be able to articulate the fact that you understand that life isn't the same for a whole lot (and I mean a WHOLE lot) of other people in this world, and, more importantly, that you, in your condition as spoiled residents of the world's richest country (that's what we are) have done something about it. Because face it, even an incredibly busy undergraduate (which is what I assume most of you are applying from) still means that you have much more free time than the average medical student or resident; and, if you haven't done anything to show that you're committed to helping other people in your free time as an undergrad, you're not going to be able to suddenly start when you're much busier with other things in your life.

Hope this helps, and best of luck to all of you. Let me know if you have any other questions, and I'm sure you'll all make fantastic physicians one day!

It would have been a great question if it was just worded as, "What is your understanding of social justice, and what are some of its real world implications? How does the advocacy for social justice fit in this picture?"

They way it was set up seemed like it was worded as social justice vs advocacy.

I had already submitted my app long before I got the email. I read it to mean that the social justice question this year is going to be a wash regardless of if you answered it or not. If you still have the question on your app but you're not comfortable leaving the question blank...maybe just answer it as-is. Define social justice theoretically..then a blurb about actually putting it into action..maybe with an example of the difference in your own life. With all the confusion about it this year I cant imagine them putting too much weight into it. Just answer earnestly, but don't try too hard to get the "right" answer. These essays are DEEP! Dang! I've really enjoyed writing them but I'm getting so far behind schedule it is making it less enjoyable. The altruism essay has taken me at least 5 hours and the social justice essay is going to be another 4-5 I think. I really hope they read these thoroughly since they asking such thought provoking questions. I would be greatly saddened if they did this: "Oh hey this guy has a 28 on his MCAT and a low GPA, I'll throw him/her out before reading the essays" . I don't even have a bad MCAT or GPA and I would be upset to hear it! If they do any sort of screening before reading these essays they shouldn't be requiring such extensive essays IMHO. These better be read, they better read everyone's...

fair enough, fair enough!

anyone else who submitted before today, if you check your secondary does it have the original question or the newly updated question?

I also waited for all this to be sorted out first, but I feel for you. If I were you I'd probably call and let them know that you answered the original question.

And you'd think that if a school changes a question they'd at least notify people in some capacity just in case they don't notice it.

Seriously. This just seems like a fiasco IMO. They should at least have a big red warning or something at the top of the application or next to the question. I mean, as I get secondaries, I take the prompts and write them in a word document so do not have to log in each time to see them. If it were not for this thread, I probably would not notice till I went to submit if I would have noticed it at all.

if you dont mind me asking, have you already submitted and if so, if you check your secondary does it have the original question or the newly updated question?

Ugh. I submitted last week (and subsequently got the email about throwing the question out), but now I am getting a log in error.

Wow. I feel like this is seriously going to screw up everyone who has already submitted (me included). I wonder how they're going to play this, especially since there have already been interview invites, no? Ugh.

Hey everyone, I submitted my app before the email (and was one of the first ones to post about it here) and I just checked my secondary. The question DID CHANGE:

"Articulate your understanding of social justice. How have you advocated or how would you advocate for social justice. (600 words or less)"

-this is way more clear than the original question...much more personal and not so theoretical...
-obviously, my answer doesn't answer the question completely now that it's changed...really hoping OSU stands by their word and disregards my answer to this question since I submitted early before they figured it out

I talked to admissions this morning. They are aware that only those applying after today will have the reworded question. Since they know when we submitted (and consequently which question we had), they are going to keep that in mind when reviewing apps.

Just got the following email regarding the social justice question:

Dear Applicant,

We are excited that you are working on your secondary application to the College of Medicine at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. This is to let you know that in an effort to provide clarification in the second essay we changed the wording of this essay. We hope you will find this helpful.

We look forward to receiving your secondary application.

Best Regards,

So it looks like they are taking the necessary action to make applicants aware.

Well I submitted the application this morning and didn't notice they changed it until I read it here I'm upset. Luckily, I ended up answering their question as to how I have advocated it but I wish I would have known because I did write a lot about what social advocacy is to me. Blah.

from what I read on their website, you do not get a complete email and they dont change your status from "secondary received" to "complete"

quote from website:

Complete Application File - consists of your AMCAS application, the Ohio State secondary application, valid MCAT scores, and at least two academic reference letters. We do not notify you when your application is complete nor does your application status change to "complete".

They are the same. I actually retried an insane number of times before realizing the 2nd part is the LAST letter of your last name. I know it's in bold and italics, but I still put the first letter of my last name no less than 10 times! So triple-check the formula - surely I'm not the only one. :D
