Good luck to everyone applying! :luck:
jHustle 05-17-2012, 09:17 PM Can any current or ms0 confirm that this year's incoming class is requiring mandatory attendance and a f/p/hp/h grading system?
And are tests really on Mondays? That seems pretty lame to be honest. If this is true, can any current me students chime in on how testing on Mondays affects you and if you feel that having them on a different day would be a LOT more beneficial?
Thanks

Hey I can only comment on your first questions: attendance of 80% of lectures will be mandatory and grading will be p/f for the first year and h/p/f for the last three.
Edit: new info came out from adcom.

Tests are, for the most part, on Mondays. It really isn't that big of a deal. The tests happen so frequently the first year that there never is that much information on each test (relatively speaking...it will always seem like a lot of material in med school). If you like you can blow off studying during the week and cram all weekend (altho i wouldnt recommend it, that works for some people). Or, as I did, you can study hard all week and take the weekend easy.
I'd be more concerned about mandatory attendance...that is huge.

Try asking this question in the 2011-2012 thread for a quicker response or try calling the office.
who said grading would be p/f? The current second years have honors and we were told that this would again be extended to the first year courses as well. maybe they changed it? At the least tho you'll have H/P/F for second year ( and third year, but that never changed). Although I disagree with this change, I dont think it is that big of a deal. People are goign to be 'gunners' or they are not.

Do you know what time the classes will be that are required attendance? And is this specific to UCI or is it a statewide UC Regents' deal?

I havent been in lecture in over a year or two, but Im guessing much hasnt changed with timing of lectures, so in first year in general there was lecture from 8-12 most days with some days lectures going in to the afternoon. Second year there was lecture scheduled pretty much all day, most days. Someoen else can chime in if things have changed.
This change is specific to UCI (not to say that other schools won't follow at some point). Its based on how they are choosing to re-interpret a sentence that was written in some handbook somewhere. They are very out of touch.

copied from last year's thread:
First years in general have 4-5 hours a day. Days usually start at 8 or 9 and go till 12 or 2 (lunch from 12-1). they also have Clinical Foundations one some weeks (1-5pm) where they learn H&Ps on standardized patients. Sometimes they'll also have ultrasound sessions, small group, anatomy review sessions occasionally in the afternoons (actual anatomy dissection is in the mornings though).
Second years in general have less. Alot less days that start at 8, but they have pathology lecture and small groups that go till 330 like 2-3 times a week.
take ryserr's consistent negativity with a grain of salt. to increase your n --> 2, i absolutely love it here and have been able to (so far) build a residency application which should:xf: take me wherever i want to go in whatever field i decide on.

haha, i dont have consistent negativity. There are very good and very bad things about UCI just as there are for any school. I say they are out of touch because making mandatory attendance was something that was done in the face of overwhelming resistance from all classes. The same was done for going back to H/P/F.
Like you, Ive been able to build an application that will get me to where I want to be no problem...i dont think that would be any different had I gone to any other school though, and the same goes for you. But its not all roses and sunshine. Im simply bringing attention to changes that will have a significant impact on the incoming classes. If I was applying this year, I would want to know these things.
edit: I do agree with your statement that the poster should take my comments with a grain of salt, as he should take yours and everyone else's with a grain of salt as well. Gather as much info as you can and try and make the best decision that you can, but just because I have criticisms of the school (just as I have criticisms of the medical school system as a whole) doesn't mean they aren't valid/shouldn't be heard!
I was told at second look that the first year would be p/f. I don't know about the second year and beyond.
i hope thats true! 2nd through 4th years are definitely H/P/F.
syoung 06-18-2012, 07:13 PM Must attend. Went to Ugrad here, and did research in Path department, so I constantly watched the med campus with envy... Hopefully next year!
Rogerfederer88 07-11-2012, 07:23 AM AnyOne receive secondaries yEt?
jgalt42 07-11-2012, 08:13 AM Nope, no secondaries yet. I did talk to an adcom member last month though, they said the secondaries usually come out sometime in mid July. So expect something either at the end of this week or early next.

DrDestroyMD 07-11-2012, 09:46 AM Got a similar email. Apparently they assign a group of people the same password lol.
brandonh4 07-11-2012, 09:52 AM I thought of sending an email like:

imcanadaian 07-11-2012, 10:43 AM Ok they just got it right. got an email apologizing for the glitch and giving me a login/password for their status check page. No secondary for now, just that they received my AMCAS app.
fingers crossed for a secondary!
aatia 07-11-2012, 10:45 AM Has anyone been awarded a secondary yet?
jgalt42 07-11-2012, 10:47 AM bah was hoping for the actual go for the secondary. (more waiting ensues)
threnodyk 07-11-2012, 10:47 AM All that nonsense and they're not even giving out secondaries! So disappointing.
threnodyk 07-11-2012, 10:52 AM When I login I see a blank under "Secondary awarded," but I already have access to the secondary. Is this true for anyone else?
aatia 07-11-2012, 11:08 AM Pretty sure that's the case for everyone.
Rogerfederer88 07-11-2012, 11:11 AM When did you submit your amcas?
aatia 07-11-2012, 11:19 AM 6/5
imcanadaian 07-11-2012, 11:53 AM i was verified amcas 6/7. we totally have access to the questions. so I'm sure you can start working on them. If you're like me, you have plenty of other secondaries waiting to be submitted...
aspiringdoc1234 07-11-2012, 01:05 PM Could someone that has access to the questions post them here?
I received a new password from UCI and it says my secondary award is "pending."

I'll be an MS2 here in the fall, I'll be happy to jump in to answer any questions I can. I've actually heard that they'll be doing H/P/F for all 4 years (starting with Class of 2016). And yes, they're starting the 80% mandatory attendance with Class of 2016 as well.
As far as Monday exams go, it does suck that you are busy those weekends. But I like to have the weekends to study at the same time. Especially if the material includes everything up to the previous Friday (which it always does), it gives me a few days to digest the material before the exam. In the first half of first year, you pretty much have exams every Monday (with some exceptions). They have less material and they force you to keep up with the material. But towards the second half of first year, you have exams more like every other Monday (with more material). So we still can have free weekends.
Good luck everyone! :luck:
BigBear123 07-11-2012, 02:41 PM I don't get why we have access to the secondaries if weren't "awarded" them yet?

imcanadaian 07-11-2012, 02:51 PM Invite received! For those of you who got access to the status page/secondaries today maybe it was just the way UCI sets up their system. Check your email! I literally just got the formal invite.

This made me laugh...

I had the same question. ANy postbacc love here to answer that question? I had a couple of C's in the pre-req and most counselors told me not to retake but take upper divs of those. I got a secondary invite but like above is it even worth it to do if I get rejected?

I'd think you would be able to enter an upper division bio course in place of the one you had a C in.

How's your summer going? And when do classes start again for you guys?
Bza was a big help to me in getting to know the school/preparing for the interview. Hopefully I can do the same to this year's applicants.
I'll be starting in a few weeks, so I'll try my best to answer your questions about the app process. Good luck to everyone!

I talked to admissions. For all completed coursework, I think C's or higher are ok. But if you are currently enrolled or will be taking future courses, those must be a B or higher. If you notice, they changed the little note at the bottom of the pre-reqs page on the secondary.

The UC system pre-screens so not everyone receives secondaries. Although that probably means they take longer to send them out too. Don't lose hope!

GooseWing 07-19-2012, 12:56 PM Just for everyone's information. I found the following on their site.
From the 2010-2011 cycle:
~5,000 total applicants
~2,500 secondaries sent
~500-600 interviews
Final class of 104 students.
Still no secondary.. I wonder how stringent their screen is, I got a secondary from both san diego and sf..

I know for a fact they DO go out in batches. They also give out interviews / rejections within those batches. Apparently they don't let the apps pile up, which is good news to those getting secondaries late.
so if i submitted my primaries on 6/6 and got the application received email on 7/11 with no secondary so far, is there no hope?

As a recent graduate from UCI, you only get the UCInetID once you've been accepted.
Anyone know if anyone else has gotten interviews???
So I just curiously checked my status and got a UCI interview invite dated today!!! Whaaaaaaat. Did not get an email.
Also there is a link telling me to activate a UCI Net ID but I am wondering if I can just use my still current UCI ID(went to undergrad there)..hmm though I see they gave me a new student ID #.

smile8888 07-26-2012, 09:45 PM So I received secondary on 7/25. and I submitted today on 7/26. Paid the fee and all. But on the status page, it says they have not received my LORs from AMCAS. But all my LORs are in since early June. Is this common for all those who submitted secondaries already? Does it take a while after you submit your secondary for them to download LORs?
EDIT: nvm. just saw the above posts. Seems like it usually takes about 2-3 days for them to download LORs and for application to be complete.
cinamin 07-26-2012, 09:53 PM wow tatertots... just checked your mdapps and you are on fire.. NICE!
Congrats on the interview! Yes, you can still use your old undergrad UCInetID. But you won't have to worry about setting that up until you're accepted (you just contact the tech department and they'll update your info).
I went to UCI for undergrad, then was a UCI employee during my gap years, and now I'm here for med school. I've had the same UCInetID and email the entire time, but have 3 different ID numbers .

daisys 07-27-2012, 12:50 AM Hmmm... should I be worried if I was verified on 7/10 and still haven't received a secondary invite? :(
I dont think so. It took about a week to deliver mine. But the thread last year said it took some people a month

Yep, TaterTots is a beast.
virtuoso735 07-27-2012, 01:06 PM For listing the "School Activities" did you guys list work during the school year?
Also, what does it mean to be socially or educationally disadvantaged? Neither of my parents went to high school, so does that make me educationally disadvantaged? And if I'm a first-generation immigrant, does that make me socially disadvantaged? I'm confused about these terms.
jansOri23 07-28-2012, 01:23 AM For those of you guys who got secondaries, was there a Letters of Recommendation page in the secondary app? The instructions say there is a a letter of rec section, and apparently this is the only section on the secondary app that you can view after you submitting. I didn't see this section anywhere, so I just submitted.
The only thing I did for letters was just assign it through AMCAS. Is there anything else, I need to do? ... like list the name of the letter authors somewhere?
Thanks in advance.
dsk89 07-29-2012, 12:56 AM If I was verified before June 29th, and UCI sent me a "receipt of application" email on July 11th, am I still in the running for a secondary?

There seems to be no LOR button anywhere. However, I submitted my secondary and the next day I checked my status and had updated my LOR status to received. I had sent my letters through AMCAS on 7/19 and they updated my LOR status the day after they received my secondary, so it should be automatic.
Forthefuture 07-30-2012, 06:41 PM How long did it take for your LORs to be marked received? It's already been a week for me and they still aren't...
I just checked 2011-2012 thread. It seemed quite a few people had to wait a bit before their letters were received too. It's been a week for me too. I think we should just wait and be patient.

What are some topics people have chosen for the challenge they overcame? I feel like I will sound incredibly whiny in this essay compared to the magnitude of challenges others have overcame.
Honestly, I don't think they expect everyone to submit some super-moving story about some super-difficult challenge they had to overcome to be where they are; they're probably just looking for someone who has the ability to learn from their mistakes/setbacks & strong enough to overcome difficulties (rather than backing off, hiding, or running away) - cause you'll probably experience a TON of those in med school & later on in your career. So just choose something meaningful to YOU and make the focus not about how tough (or not) the challenge was, but how you were able overcome it & learn from it. If you do that I doubt you could come off whiny.

I went to UCLA, but took 2 classes at UCI during summer and had much better experiences with UCI professors.
Trying to track down UCLA professors for a science LoR was like mission impossible for me. I decided to just shoot my 2 UCI professors a quick e-mail asking for a LoR and both responded the same day with an offer to meet me in person that week.

Also, since it has come up on this thread, I do not have either the math or statistics prerequisites done either. So if you are in the same boat, do not despair!
DrDestroyMD 08-27-2012, 01:39 PM Yeah same here. Radio silence from all UCs so far.
From looking at some MSARs, it seems that UC schools give many more invites to in-state residents than out of state. For some schools the disparity is 5 in-state:1 OOS. As for schools, only Irvine, Davis, and UCSD have sent out invites. UCLA has sent some out for MSTP/special programs (pretty sure about this but not positive).
Congrats! From the pdf on the status page "interview information", it looks like there will be a student interview then a faculty interview.
Yup. 1 hour interview with a student and 1 hour interview with a faculty member. They're semi-open file, meaning they can see all of your application (PS, secondary essays, ECs) except for the MCAT & GPA. They're pretty relaxed and conversational, and just meant to get to know you beyond your application.
Congrats on all the recent interview invites!

jgalt42 08-28-2012, 09:47 AM Thanks! July 22nd complete, found out on Sunday! First II on the MD side. Would love to come here, actually this is my first choice. I would cancel all interviews and withdraw from all schools if I get in.

Wow. Congrats. I am really impressed.
Do you mind me asking you what do you believe made you stand out or why they chose you?
Did you apply for a special program?
jgalt42 08-28-2012, 09:54 PM Thanks! I am super excited and really grateful for this opportunity. I'm a nontrad. I've been working as a healthcare quality improvement analyst for primary care clinics in orange county's underserved communities. I know TV sometimes makes it seem like the OC is full of a bunch of rich people, but believe me, there are areas here that really struggle economically. Ideally it would be amazing to stay here for school because I'd like to keep working here in this region to improve healthcare, especially for this vulnerable population. I did apply to the prime-LC program. The clinics I work with serve a predominantly latino population. I definitely need to brush up on the spanish before my interview!
I am looking forward to seeing what this school is all about and meeting some students!
The interview invite I know is in no way an acceptance, but nonetheless I am really thankful for this. Keep the faith guys, put your best foot forward always.

Wow, I am very impressed. Your resume just blew mine out of the water. Good luck. :luck: And yes, there are some underprivileged places in the OC (santa ana, westminster, and etc.).
Oh, and you don't need to brush up on your spanish until the second interview for prime.

Are you familiar with UCI's student run free clinic, the UC Irvine Outreach Clinic?
jgalt42 08-29-2012, 08:21 AM Are you familiar with UCI's student run free clinic, the UC Irvine Outreach Clinic?
Yes! They definitely do great work in Tustin! I work with 7 clinics located in Santa Ana, Anaheim, Huntington Beach, Orange, and Garden Grove. We also have a pediatric obesity sepcialty clinic in Santa Ana, off of Broadway. It's a pretty neat program. Dr. Alberto Gedissman has been working with the community for over 20 years now on reducing the incidence of obesity as well as preventing all the conditions that may come with it such as hypertension, diabetes, etc.

Neat! I was just curious since I volunteer at the UCI Outreach Clinic frequently.

ComradeDoktor 09-02-2012, 09:22 PM Hey guys, it says that Irvine has a dinner for interviewees the night before. Anyone know what we should expect? How long does it last? Dress code?
cbas07 09-03-2012, 02:01 PM II! This is my #1 choice and I am incredibly happy. Can't wait to visit the school, and hopefully get considered for prime LC.

cbas07 09-03-2012, 02:14 PM Same! Just checked and was invited, but never got an email. Do we only have two options or can we wait for more to appear?
I only saw one option for interview dates, so I took it.

How are you dealing with taking so many days off work? A fortunate problem to have, but I have to take off so many days to work in traveling and interviews...
Hey guys, it says that Irvine has a dinner for interviewees the night before. Anyone know what we should expect? How long does it last? Dress code?
They usually have a pre-interview dinner thing at Gina's pizza. It's a chance to meet with some of the current med students in an informal setting to find out more about the school. The dress code is casual. They usually send you an email with the details when it gets closer to your interview date.
I highly recommend going .

Yeah completed first week Aug... Then again that's probably my fault for taking so long.

dsk89 09-06-2012, 10:07 PM Dsk89 I'm sorry to hear that. Did they update the status through the application status? When did you submit your primary?
Thanks man. my dream of staying home in california is slowly fading :(
But they basically sent me this email after i was "pending" for a secondary since forever:
Thank you for applying to the University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine. Regrettably, we are unable to offer you a position in our first year medical school class. The Admissions Committee evaluated your application along with those from over 5,000 individuals. We had many qualified applicants but only 104 positions, therefore some very difficult decisions had to be made.
We sincerely hope you realize your dream and wish you the best in your future endeavors.
Sincerely,
Ellena M. Peterson, Ph.D.
Associate Dean, Admissions and Outreach
UC Irvine, School of Medicine
and i submitted my primary on the very first day (6/5), and was verified just a few days later
syoung 09-06-2012, 10:24 PM I heard this is for those that didn't make cut-offs? At least for pre-secondary screenings... Unless there was something else in the application that they did not feel was a best fit
wolfwolf 09-06-2012, 10:37 PM For those who apply early June but still haven't got a secondary, does it mean a silent rejection or a manual review after not meeting the cutoffs?

kaige333 09-07-2012, 08:21 AM Interview Invite!!! Do applicants typically hear back within a month of the interview date?
I would like to find out the answer to this question too. When they screen for interview invites, do they evaluate in the order the secondaries are received? Since I submitted mine around Aug 18, I am wondering if I should be expecting a response (rejection/invite) around Sept 18?
Thanks!

Yep mine says under review still as well. It feels like forever but I think its been ~2.5wks
I think schools generally vary...4-6 wks from submission of secondary seems to be average-ish...
SDME321 09-07-2012, 09:10 AM ~5.5 weeks here. patience. wearing. thin. :scared:
Interview Invite!!! Do applicants typically hear back within a month of the interview date?
5-6 weeks typically. You'll get a phone call if you're accepted, or an email (I think) if you're waitlisted/rejected.
As for time from submitting primary to getting secondary, I remember it varying quite a bit. The UCs in general tend to be slower in the process. So hang tight everyone!!
Ichiban88 09-11-2012, 11:28 AM Does anyone else have "Under Review" in the Interview Status section? Mine has said that for about a month now.
yea under review since 8/6 as well.
kaige333 09-11-2012, 02:29 PM yea under review since 8/6 as well.
Do UCs tend to be slower/take their sweet time compared to other schools? Other threads seem to have been more active then the UC ones.

I don't know if this will make you feel any better, but looking at last year's UCI thread, people complete around 8/8 received interview invites toward the end of September/beginning of October. So if they're on the same schedule as last year, there's still hope! At least, I still have some (complete 8/2). :)

If you have $34 to spend, why not?
Gaboon 09-16-2012, 07:26 PM It is not too late to apply...go for it. The official admissions policy is that we show no preference to IS vs OOS applicants. It just works out that many more IS applicants actually apply to UCI and so the class tends to be composed of CA residents. If you have a compelling reason to want to come to Irvine...let us know!

Gaboon 09-25-2012, 06:38 PM Edit: Oops guess I'm wrong. Is the reason why UCs are so hard to get into for OOS really just because there are so many Cali applicants?
Yeah, all the UCs get hit with the home crowd applicants. And, as a side note, the more applicants any given undergrad produces, the more well-represented they tend to be in our student body. It's just the numbers. That being said, UCI strives for diversity and being OOS can be a great way to add to the class.
Gaboon 09-25-2012, 06:43 PM Would you recommend a letter of interest? Or a simple email? How do you think this interest could be conveyed?
Most successful applicants demonstrate this best during interviews, ie -- 'my brother/sister/boyfriend attends UCI' or 'my family/friends/support network is in SoCal'. But even simple geographic ties can be mentioned in the AMCAS app & secondary.
Even if you don't have those kinds of ties, just doing homework on what UCI has to offer in terms of student programs & extracurricular activities--and then communicating them during the interview--is more than a lot of other applicants ever do, believe it or not!
