Hey guys, just a quick question about the two Minn campuses. Apparently each campus has a separate app fee of $75, and I would rather pay not pay $150 to apply to both. The only difference I know between the two is that Duluth caters to students interested in rural health whereas the Minneapolis/St. Paul campus has more opportunities for research. Are there any other significant differences as far as educational opportunities or curriculum that should factor into this decision?

Just got my email telling me to choose which program I want to apply to and then I will receive a secondary. Really happy, I like this school a lot. I had meetings with two of the adcoms for the MD/PhD program a year ago, I met some of the students, and this school is great. Seemed like the students here were more concerned with being good doctors instead of gunning to be at the top of the class.

As a Minnesota resident, a re-re-applicant, and friend to a large number of students in the medical school, I know for a fact the university selects fantastic and incredibly qualified individuals. I would LOVE to go to the U... I know several faculty in the Academic Health schools, all of whom are incredibly friendly people who want to see students succeed and participate in things going on at the university.

It would make my day (days?) if I could go here!

Does anyone have thoughts about entering the science courses when you've had combined lab/lectures? Is the separate entry for the lab grade only for those individuals who have not had a combined course, or is everyone expected to give them a "lab grade" even if it was just integrated into the single course grade?

Are you referring to the Duluth secondary? If so, I think I would treat it much the same way as the AMCAS (e.g. "Biology 101 and Lab") and then maybe a quick note in the spaces for 'Lab Name and Number'/'Lab Grade' (e.g. "Combined with lecture").

I only have one town listed, and it doesn't show up gray either; I checked it in a different browser too so that's not the issue. I imagine it's not a big deal - it will probably show up just fine when the adcom looks at it.

A close friend of mine just got admitted there for this coming year... the UoMinn-TC tends to be extreeemely slow. Whereas another close friend got in to the UoMinn-Duluth a couple years back in the beginning of November. I haven't received the TC secondary or anything regarding the school other than me telling them Duluth was a no-go.

I'm still too lazy to check last years thread to check how it ended up...

Hey gang, I'm new to SDN but have applied to the U and will be following this thread through the fall/winter. I submitted my AMCAS a few weeks later than the earliest batch (June 20th), and am hoping to be verified by the end of this week/early next week. Applying to both the Duluth and TC campus, and received the secondary for Duluth a few weeks ago. For those that got the update email from TC, I'm assuming that you all have already been verified by AMCAS - would anyone care to share the info that they received in the email update from TC? Hearing from applicants in the past, it seems like you'll receive a TC secondary a month or so after you are verified, does that seem to be the theme for this year as well? Thanks for the help!

i would say that 3 should cover that. i would leave the last one blank unless you've got some recent awards, new things to add, etc. otherwise, if i was an adcom that is, i would view it as an applicant feeling like they need to suck up to get in, which i would view negatively. however that's just me. :D

Although I am not applying this cycle, if this were to come up when I apply, would being born in the state and having my father as former student help a lot with my chances?

I think that, being a public school, they like to help out students with strong ties to the area and university. Also, I assume they want their graduates to practice medicine in state, and those with strong Minnesota ties are more likely to stay.

As the U of M is my undergrad, and I was an admissions counselor for high school students, I think I can say with confidence that they really like their Minnesota kids, and I think its very likely they use that question to asses how strongly you are connected to their state.

I am re-applying to both Duluth and TC. I feel like Duluth is a long shot even for MN residents unless you have lived or worked in greater MN. They have such a demand for rural physicians and reservations I don't think they are taking any chances anymore. My friend who is starting school this fall was accepted basically all around the country and couldn't land an interview so kudos to you all who did/are!

Best of luck!

Yeah, if you mean the 31st of July you are probably going to be waiting. I was verified on July 2 and received the secondary 3 days ago (TC program). Probably some lag time with mine because I was verified so early (no one got them for the first couple weeks) but Minnesota seems to take their time.

It took them a month to get back to me.

You guys need to chill. The UMN is horribly slow, but their admissions process is too. You application won't be affected because you haven't received a secondary yet.

Agree with this completely. I was verified on July 23 and received my secondary exactly three weeks later on August 13. This was the last (by far) of many secondaries that I've received, I wouldn't worry about it!

Reapplicant here. The UM site clearly says that Reaps need to obtain NEW letters of rec for each subsequent cycle. A few of my letters are from people with whom I have not had any new experiences in the past year and I don;t see the point in taking up their precious time re-wording the same letters. As much as I do not want to believe that I need to get new ones, I have a feeling they will hold to their policy.

Before I contact admissions I wanted to see if anyone has already asked about resubmitting the same letters (along with new ones from different evaluators) or had success resubmitting in the past. Thanks folks.

This could be wrong but I've heard through word of mouth that they only screen to make sure you haven't met the maximum applications and that the time between your 2nd and 3rd were separated by a minimum of two years.

i received an email about a month ago saying they screen and then send secondaries..

this was the first couple of paragraphs in that email:

Dear Applicant:

The Office of Admissions has received your 2013 American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) application to the University of Minnesota Medical School - Twin Cities. Please take a moment to become familiar with our application process at http://www.meded.umn.edu/admissions/application_process.php.

Over the next few months, the Admissions Committee will review all verified applications and send supplemental applications only to qualified applicants. Those invited to complete the supplemental application will receive another email after their application is screened against our school's selection criteria and application polices.

To view the selection criteria used by the Committee, visit the following address: http://www.meded.umn.edu/admissions/selection.php. Reapplicants and international citizens must meet certain requirements before they are given access to the application as well. These requirements are listed here http://www.meded.umn.edu/admissions/reapplication.php and here http://www.meded.umn.edu/admissions/internationa

i'm probably just not going to do this one, chances are slim for me

I went to a talk about 6 months ago given by the Dean of Admissions (who actually left for JHU recently). Anyway, he said that the screening they do is very minimal -- basically unless your stats were horrific and/or you don't meet basic eligibility criteria, you were getting a secondary invite.

Okay so this may seem like a silly question, but I really need a serious answer. For the state ties question, would it be acceptable to say that my boyfriend's family lives in Minnesota? I know it's not a great tie...but apart from UMTC having a great medschool, this is really the main reason I'm applying. There's a good chance that I will practice in Minnesota if I get into the program. Again, I know it sounds kind of immature, but we've been together for 4 years and will most likely be engaged in the next few months. I appreciate any advice with this! Thanks :)

I'm not an adcom member or anything but I'd imagine if you can get the point across that your relationship is serious and longterm that that might be a good tie. If you can make it sound genuine that you'll stay for a future career even better.

That sounds like a huge stretch of a tie to MN, personally. I think they'd rather you be honest about your intention in applying if you aren't from MN rather than saying your boyfriend's family resides there.

pasiley
08-30-2012, 10:54 PM
Say your significant other and let them decide if it is a significant tie. I didn't apply to one state school even though I lived there for a few years because I have no relatives or friends (I was a small child) left there. You have "people" ties to MN, I think it is legitimate. People don't live in MN because they love not sub zero weather and muggy mosquito summers. Ties to people usually keep them around.

I agree with the previous poster. This is a legit tie. I might even so far as to say "partner" or "serious boyfriend" in order to sort of prove your point. (ie, this isn't a summer fling!) if that makes sense. Anyway, i think that this counts as a state tie and you should use it. explain that you've visited, learned about the community, the people etc.

It's not a legitimate tie if she's just mentioning it simply to use it as a tie. If she extensively visits her boyfriend's family and it's a big part of her life, then yeah, it would be.. but from her wording, it clearly doesn't sound that way. But yes, if you say 'significant other' or something like that, it sounds more appropriate than just saying boyfriend.

As for the other poster, you're wrong, my favorite part about MN actually is the weather.

Interviewed at Duluth Tuesday; here are some thoughts:
Susan in the office is great, makes you feel very relaxed before the interviews. Two one-hour (at least - I think my first went a little long) interviews; I had one with a doc and one with a community member. The focus was mainly on me and why exactly I wanted to do family practice - especially in a rural community. Touched on some activities mentioned in the primary as well as my personal statement, and then the secondary application (more so because the questions they were asking were similar to those in the secondary than because they were asking about my responses to the secondary itself). Also played some 'what would you do' type games in the interview with the doctor, while in the one with the community member we went more into the business/law side of medicine (definitely a minor piece compared with the interview as a whole). All in all, the interviewers were very easy to talk with, I definitely felt comfortable during both sessions. If you have any questions about the interviews, interview day, travel, etc., by all means ask away or pm me and I'll answer to the best of my abilities.

Screening is low, but if they saw something exceptional in your primary they may want to interview you sooner rather than later. It also seemed like secondaries did not go out based on primary submission date, I think it had more to do with location or it was completely random. Not to get your hopes up, but I wouldn't put too much weight in the response time.

Hi all,

So I submitted my ACMAS yesterday (I know super late but it’s the best I could do right now) and I received the email asking me to choose what school about 5 hours later. I read through this thread trying to figure out if that happened to everyone else as well.

Basically I am asking if that email was an automatic email sent to everyone who applied regardless whether they get a secondary or does that mean I will get a secondary. I was “prescreened” already? It was just so fast I can’t believe its true.

Everyone receives the email you speak of. If you choose to apply to both campuses, expect a supplemental invite from Duluth shortly. The TC supplemental, which I patiently await, appears to be taking 3-5 weeks from the time AMCAS verifies your primary. Good luck!

Just had my Duluth II today. Some thoughts:

Everyone was extremely nice. Susan was great at putting both myself and the other interviewee at ease before we started and opened up some small talk. As far as the actual interviews, both of the interviewers were very friendly and easy to talk to. Both emphasized that as faculty members they always keep their doors open and are open to students coming in at any time to talk to them. As far as the questions they asked. The first interviewer talked mostly about the challenges of getting rural docs to places in MN. Our conversation varied wildly though as we even spent some time talking about terrorists. (we somehow ended up there from talking about telemedicine)
My second interview really hammered down on the where do you see yourself in ten years and how do you handle certain situations in medicine(no right or wrong answers but some very tough situations) Then finished up with some great info on RPAP.
Finally we toured with 2 2nd years which was very beneficial to get their opinions on many things like the curriculum, classmates, lifestyle, etc and got to hear their uncensored answers. and yes they were very honest on all aspects.
if you have any other questions feel free to pm me!

Yeah, pretty strong ties here myself but that doesn't stop the U from rejecting us OOS.
Oh well, have other applications out there. Would have been nice to go home for school but it wasn't meant to be.

Awesome--I forgot they do two interviews... My interview here three years ago was only one person because they didn't have enough staff for the day or something along those lines.

I'm guessing a lot of people are getting confused on dates and questions regarding schools--whether they are aware of it or not. Personally I don't really care, but I'm thinking of all the people who have a lot of questions.

For example, the person who comes in not realizing they are two completely different, unrelated, and unconnected schools reads that all these interview invites have gone out... They might not realize that a lot of these seem to have come from Duluth (they apparently start their interview cycle earlier, from what I gather).

MSAR gives statistical information that groups the TC and Duluth campuses into one holistic representation of the U of M. It won't show the same numbers that mnbmen listed, which is just of the TC campus. It's hard to tell exactly how many accepts are offered, although the TC admissions page lists 281 total accepts from 476 interviewed in 2011. The admissions page lists number of interviews jumping to 582 this past cycle so it seems reasonable that they would end up giving 10-20 more accepts due to applicants matriculating elsewhere. Either way, >50% acceptance rate post-interview is pretty damn good!

I called after 3 days and Lola told me that e-mails were going out that afternoon, but she told me right on the phone. If it's a date that's coming up or you need to know for work/school schedule, feel free to give them a call, otherwise I'm sure you'll hear soon. They are so nice in admissions and I'm sure will let you know you're confirmed date if you get a little antsy like I did haha.

Does Minnesota take in the area emails well?

I also confirmed my interview date last week, and haven't received confirmation yet.
I called and confirmed, but no email communication has been received.

Yes.

Booo!!! I sent that email yesterday and today I got a double whammy!

Brown rejected me via email and UMN snailed rejected me today (sent 10/8).... ARGH!

Would they "reconsider" if I asked why they rejected me? Some students seem to get "un-rejected" when they ask... Not sure which schools though.

LOL

I'm in town for a family thing and the U was nice enough to let me interview during my visit.

For you other question, as long as you are polite, what do you have to loose?

Rumor or fact? I find this very difficult to believe.

I think 1 person posted that, hard to tell if thats true or not. But, in either case it would be under a very unique case so I would in no way expect or even count on this being true.

Of course it's probably n = 1, so that's definitely evidenced based ....

For the people that have interviewed at TC so far, how did your interview go? Was it stressful or laid back?

Incredibly laid back. Interviews are generally scripted, although they don't mind going off the script if it's relevant and meaningful to you. There's no pressure from anyone, and everyone is incredibly friendly.

...Sounds like Minnesota! :meanie::D

super laid back. and i'll agree it was pretty scripted. the student guided tours were very candid and an awesome addition to the experience. definitely had that "minnesota nice" feel to it. man i wanna go here even worse just remembering it!!!

I don't mean the scripted part as a subjective observation.

The interviews are actually (essentially) scripted. It IS subjective in that they pull questions from the script they feel will cover the bases, but they also encourage discussion outside the script to make sure they get to know you.

It works pretty well though--I felt like both my interviews were interested in getting to know me and understanding my perspectives.

In the past several years, I believe the dean called acceptances. I'm guessing this hasn't changed, except for the fact that it will be the interim dean--although this is an assumption on my part.

yeah, it was a call!

I know you were applying to some pretty high-end schools... So the question is, where does the U rank for you? Or is that too personal/are you worried admins will connect this to you and weed you out if you spill?

i interviewed early september.

betheltim: not to be a pain, but i dont understand how that information is useful to you/why you asked that.

either way, I think the U is an amazing school!

Early September means what, date-wise? Mine was on the 10th (great experience, btw) and haven't heard back yet.

I was just curious... I'm not trying to gain anything out of asking, just making conversation I guess... Sorry if that was offensive.

Interviewed today at the Twin Cities campus! Great experience, really friendly students and staff. Both interviews were a little too scripted for my liking, but overall they were really relaxed and easy going.
