Good luck to everyone applying! :luck:
JCTWP46 05-27-2012, 11:29 AM First. Surprised nobody has posted in here yet.
AtlasCarraway 05-31-2012, 07:47 AM On the fence about applying here from OOS. Not excited about the acceptance rate, or the cost. But my numbers are competitive.
Edit: Adding the school under AMCAS brings up the following:
(Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States at the time of application. Applications are only considered from: [1] Tennessee residents, [2] residents of the eight states contiguous to Tennessee - Mississippi, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and [3] children whose parents are UT system alumni, regardless of their state of residence.)
Guess that makes UTHSC a no-go.

Are you a TX applicant? What interested you about the University of Tennessee?
AtlasCarraway 06-03-2012, 09:33 PM I'm a CO applicant applying as broadly as possible. No real specific reasons other than the fact that I love Tennessee and would like to live there at some point in my life.
ajs08029 06-04-2012, 05:34 AM I'm pretty sure you won't be able to apply here if you're from CO. They only accept students from Tennessee plus a few surrounding states.

I see you like Vandy too ;) . I love Nashville. Do you have any ties to TN?
AtlasCarraway 06-04-2012, 05:30 PM None at all. Looked at going to undergrad at Lipscomb, every time I've been back to Nashville I've loved it.
spacetomatoes 06-19-2012, 07:16 PM My application is in! Good luck, everyone - and go Vols!!
flamm 08-08-2012, 04:19 PM Let me start by saying this – I was happy that they accepted me and am appreciative for being in medical school but being a 2nd year now and looking back at my selection I truly regret picking this school. There aren’t too many in depth reviews on UT College of Medicine and reasons probably being many of the students are probably scared to speak their minds for fear of the administration, alright, here ya go…
Education- Anatomy and immune are pretty well taught here, micro is poorly thaught, pharmacology is awful and you are pretty much reduced to learning it by nitpicking a few things here and there from certain lectures. Organ systems -- the average of our class (170 or so students in our class) at the end of hematology module was 69!!! (passing grade is 68 here)… barely passing as a whole class. Same thing happened (very low grades as a class in cardio and renal modules). They even erased all the exams from the system. The administration said they do not have a clue of what happened.
They curved ALL of the exams that we took throughout the Spring semester--believe it or not, out of 6 exams, all scores got VERY curved in the end. All our grades were pretty bad on all the exams before curving.
Of course, rumors circulate that they manipulate grades. Some people think that if you are borderline passing but you earn a barely passing grade that they actually fail you… say you earned a 69 or 70 – barely passing. You get your score report and somehow you failed according to the score report…many people have asked to see their exams to review and they are denied being able to look at them.
Fortunately, I have not cut it this close but this has happened to a few of my friends…there are multiple other occasions where it appears they manipulate grades to their liking…which just unnerves some people. Overall, UT picks and chooses who they help, who they screw; who they accommodate, who they won't tolerate…
Administration is by far my biggest complaint and many students will agree. There is a rift between administration and students. They say they work for their students but the fact is that they care more about their own reputation than they do about their students. They rule with an iron fist and work by scaring their students into doing things out of fear. I could go on and on – there are just too many things to honestly write down…It boils down to the school feels very oppressive and administration is not friendly at all, education is very poor overall…
I am sure some people wil say that I am one of those disgruntled medical students or whatever but fact is I appreciate UT for accepting me and giving me the opportunity… they are oppressive, multiple courses are taught very, very poorly, high turnover of curriculum, administration is not friendly at all or helpful, sometimes even the opposite of helpful, the school is run like a business (a bad one).
Again, believe me or not – it does not matter to me but just wish someone had put this sort of information out there before I made my decision on UT because I would have 100% percent chosen somewhere else or not gone to medical school. Unless you are looking to become a crappy physician, I'd stay away unless you have no choice or you like this kind of system.
If you have multiple choices for schools I would think long and hard before attending at UT… Being a medical student is stressful enough let alone dealing with the crappy administrative staff, arbitrary grading, personal vendetta, and so on…Hard to describe unless you’re here…
Buttermellow 08-14-2012, 02:53 PM Wow... that sounds pretty terrible! I actually just applied and was looking forward to maybe interviewing here. It would be great to get a second opinion if there was another UT med student hanging around.

Agreed. :-)

Perhaps part of the disdain is in relation to the kinks needing to be worked out in the new curriculum. I've heard of other students being a bit flustered with the transition, hopefully the student feedback from last year's M1 class (now M2s) will help the program. And I have heard happy students, as well. Every school/program has its positives and its negatives.
boardgal 08-16-2012, 01:14 PM M3 here. There have definitely been a ton of kinks to work out with the new curriculum (which is actually probably an understatement), but students and faculty are working very, very hard to improve it! We all feel for last years M1s but with each class there will be improvements made.
Keep in mind that UTs strengths are its clinical years. And that UT matches several students into big name residencies each year (think Harvard, Mayo, Stanford). At the end of the day, graduation = MD.
Good luck!
aarond 08-23-2012, 11:22 AM Any secondaries received yet?
medschoolpleez 08-23-2012, 12:42 PM Any secondaries received yet?
I was wondering that too. Their website says they'll start sending out secondaries after August 20th, which has already gone by. Last secondary that I'm waiting on.
aarond 08-23-2012, 01:37 PM Yeah, same thought process as me. It's my last one and should be the easiest. and no fee
aarond 08-24-2012, 10:51 AM Bam, secondary received.

Guero 08-29-2012, 05:23 AM OOS...they don't screen i dont think.
They do screen, though it's somewhat minimal.
medschoolpleez 08-30-2012, 12:40 PM Has anyone gotten a confirmation of any kind after sending in the secondary? I emailed the portion they wanted emailed, and I mailed in the other part, but haven't had any communication since then

i got the complete email on monday. guess it's because i sent the form certified that same day on friday.
medschoolpleez 08-31-2012, 03:12 PM Yea, I just got the complete email today. Apparently my picture didn't send as an attachment so that was holding up my file being processed.
Guero 09-11-2012, 07:26 AM Secondary received and submitted 9/10/12. Anyone get an interview yet? Good luck everyone.
Buttermellow 09-12-2012, 08:35 AM They do screen, though it's somewhat minimal.

I didn't get one until January last year and interviewed in March. You still have time.

Cowboy12 09-21-2012, 06:31 PM ello, new at SDN, I am applying late in the game and was advised to ask on here if anyone would be willing to share what questions and or essays were required to fill out the secondary so I can go ahead and start filling them out. If anyone would be willing to share this information, I would be overly thankful. Please PM me the details if at all possible or just reply on here

For this secondary, there are no essay questions. It's just a question sheet asking basic information. Won't take more than a couple minutes to finish up
Guero 09-24-2012, 01:24 PM Jeeze, the first set of interviews are on October 1st. I can't believe we haven't hear more people post about interviews. Granted, not everyone that gets an interview will post on SDN. *sigh*
Gerudo 09-25-2012, 08:38 AM Interview October 1st, 33/3.78/3.90/IS

shanMD 10-08-2012, 05:49 PM I interview here on Oct 31st! Anyone that has already interviewed care to share their experience? ;-)

They always tend to be heavy on ethical and clinical dilemmas. They also ask you direct questions about your app; so know it well. Other than that, it's just touring with M1s and M2s and eating lunch with M3s and M4s. Pretty much your usual interview day, nothing special and no surprises. This is from my experience last year.

Good luck everyone
jellybean4 10-15-2012, 05:59 AM Submitted 9/29, complete 10/4, interview invite 10/14 (IS) Wish all schools were this quick!
I've got one interview in Nashville and the other in Memphis. I'm not sure if I like that or not. Could just be a hassle to have to miss class twice when I could get it done in one swoop or it could be nice to have a reset button between interviews in case it goes poorly (first interview, so I'm a little nervous). Anyone else have experience with this?
doctorwho17 10-15-2012, 07:34 AM Just heard that I got a interview invite for October 31. Secondary complete Oct. 9. I interviewed here last year so if anyone has any questions about it just let me know.
medschoolpleez 10-30-2012, 06:29 PM Anything happening at UT anymore?
Gerudo 10-30-2012, 06:40 PM If I recall correctly, they will be sending out the first batch of acceptances this Friday (via snailmail.)

How'd the interview go? I have one Tuesday. I interviewed there last year too, but this time, I'm only interviewing with one person. Last year, I interviewed with two.

The interview went pretty well. They said that the next meeting to determine acceptances would be November 16, and they would try to get the letters out before Thanksgiving. Good luck with your interview!
aarond 11-05-2012, 06:40 PM Interviewed with Dr. Presbury and Dr Watsky.
I feel like it went pretty well, ethical questions from Presbury but also a good mixture of personal things. Watsky was honestly more difficult in my opinion.
BTW. Ms Harris is the absolute nicest person I've met along the interview trail.
Guero 11-06-2012, 02:56 PM Sent a status check email to Dr. Strother today noting that I didn't receive a confirmation when I sent in an update. He wrote back verifying that it was indeed in my file and that they do plan to interview me, but have yet to schedule it. w00t! This year is SOOOOO different than last year. I. Am. In. Heaven.

Vol 4 Life 11-07-2012, 06:13 PM Finished my secondary and was complete on September 15th. I'm still waiting to hear word on an interview. Seems like their turn-around is pretty slow, especially considering I'm an in-state applicant. I really love this school and hope to be accepted!
I will probably post on here once I find out if I get an interview. My stats are 31Q / 3.85c / 3.83s. Good luck to everyone!

Sweet, there's still hope for a November interview. Word. Thanks for posting.
robertcase44 11-07-2012, 11:38 PM So, yesterday I received an email from admissions asking me to return for another interview. I interviewed back on October 3rd initially. Essentially, this meant that 1 of my interviewers did not like me and the other did. I interviewed with an endocrinologist Dr. Nutting. He was rude and seemed entirely disinterested in my application and in medicine in general. Just a heads up to anyone who lands this Nut-job for an interview, talk to him about his dogs and dog shows. People told me to do this before the interview but I chose not to. I shouldn't have to kiss someone's ass and talk about poodles for an hour in order to get into medical school. Anyway, I'm withdrawing my application and not attending the additional interview. I felt much more welcome and happy at UVA. Good luck to everyone else. UT is great, lots of opportunities. However, after my interview experience, I've been somewhat soured.

Just to provide some perspective, I interviewed with the same professor last year, spoke absolutely nothing about dogs, even though advised to do so by others from what I gathered was ultimately a facetious ploy. We instead spoke in detail about some of my volunteering experiences and mostly about my research endeavors. I had a wonderful interview, joked a bit, and felt great.
Now, I'm not in any way discounting your experience and am rather disappointed it turned out that way. That said, I have indeed heard a lot of mixed reviews about the administration and faculty; so it doesn't come as a surprise. I'm glad you found somewhere you genuinely love, though. Good luck. We'll see ya on the other side of M4 at PGY1!
aarond 11-08-2012, 04:24 PM Has anyone gotten any correspondence post interview as of reject, accept, or no decision?
The next meeting is November 16th per Diane, and I didn't know if anyone had gotten any good news yet
Edit: Take that back, a friend got their acceptance today.

Has anybody else heard anything back from the October 26th meeting? I wonder if maybe they did not get through too many applications the first time around.
aarond 11-13-2012, 07:27 PM They meet again this Friday, realllllllllly hoping they make it through to review me, because I would feel SO relieved to be accepted here.
Gerudo 11-14-2012, 09:22 AM I received an acceptance letter via snail mail within the past week (just checked my mail for the first time today). I interviewed on the first day of interviews though, Oct 1st.
There is no deposit but I can't seem to find a turn around date requirement...
aarond 11-14-2012, 10:10 AM Congratulations, who'd you interview with?
Gerudo 11-14-2012, 03:06 PM Presbury and Nutting; both interviews went pretty well. I have no complaints, though I don't necessarily think I did particularly amazing. In fact, both interviews seemed relatively short, maybe 30 minutes each. The first one was actually 'rushed' due to last minute scheduling changes.
33Q/3.7/3.9 btw
Guero 11-14-2012, 04:09 PM Presbury and Nutting; both interviews went pretty well. I have no complaints, though I don't necessarily think I did particularly amazing.
Would you mind sharing your stats? Don't hesitate to PM if you're too bashful.
aarond 11-21-2012, 12:00 PM .....very anxiously awaiting my letter, curious when they were/will be mailed out following the 16th meeting.
Euzinha 11-21-2012, 07:29 PM I emailed Mrs. Harris Monday night asking about the Friday meeting but I haven't heard anything back from her. Also, I called the admissions office this afternoon and nobody was there... Does anybody have any news from the 16th meeting?
doctorwho17 11-21-2012, 08:26 PM I was told at my interview that they would try to get the letters out before Thanksgiving, but they couldn't guarantee they would be out by then. So, I'd say we'll get them Friday or Saturday now.
Euzinha 11-21-2012, 08:52 PM Do they send an email to notify that the letter was mailed? I have heard someone saying that they got the email before the letter... If that is true then they probable didn't mail the letters yet.
aarond 11-21-2012, 08:58 PM People I have spoken to said that they haven't been receiving anything prior to the letter like years past.
doctorwho17 11-22-2012, 08:17 AM Yeah, last year when I interviewed here they didn't send an email or anything, just the letter in the mail with rejection, acceptance, or on hold.
aarond 11-22-2012, 04:06 PM Got excited to see something from UTHSC in my inbox, but it's just letting me know to expect a survey :(
Euzinha 11-22-2012, 05:49 PM I got the same email. Do you think that they also mailed the letter? I'm so anxious! I have some interviews coming up that I am not willing to go if I get accepted here.
aarond 11-22-2012, 05:56 PM Hopefully, maybe at least the survey will show up tomorrow since I am not far from Memphis

If you have multiple choices for schools I would think long and hard before attending at UT… Being a medical student is stressful enough let alone dealing with the crappy administrative staff, arbitrary grading, personal vendetta, and so on…Hard to describe unless you’re here…
@Ann would you agree or disagree with anything here?
p head 12-05-2012, 11:19 AM I am an M2 as well. It's not that bad. That person is some combo of whiny and crazy. There have been some miscommunications with our class, but that is mainly due to our class being the guinea pigs for the new curriculum. It has gotten better and will be in a much, much better place for every following year. Best of luck with the decision. Clinicals at UT are pretty great, so that helps too.
Dreamer9713 12-05-2012, 11:30 AM I would love to have you weigh in on this as well--especially with regard to there existing a rift between students and faculty.
I just interviewed there, and that just wasn't the vibe I picked up at all.

It's really not. Like at any educational institution, there are professors that are loved and professors that are less than loved. The faculty is very willing to hear all feedback and are willing to make changes based on that feedback. The professors readily answer questions via email, and many set up review sessions. I have not visited any professors in their office, but I have friends that have found it very helpful. Like any place, it's not perfect, but I would chose it again every time.
cclewis 12-05-2012, 05:53 PM I'm currently an M2 at UTHSC. Any questions?
What’s the student culture like? Or rather, how do you personally feel about the class dynamic? On interview days I get the feeling that I get the most exposure to the people who are most gung-ho about the institution but wanted the opinion of someone not necessarily working admissions. Also, there wasn’t really much of a chance to mingle and get a feel for it myself.
Having not had the chance to tour the anatomy lab on my interview day, what’s the basic set-up in there/ lab teaching style?
Do you find most courses are taught well? Drawing from the information above, how’s the student-faculty relationship? Do most professors make themselves readily available outside of class?
Most importantly, what’s your biggest complaint so far about the school? Any areas that need some major improvement, or does everything seem to be well-put together?
Thank you for your time! I’m sure it’s hectic this time of year over there.

Class culture is solid. Most of the students do a lot of hanging out outside of class. Everyone shares resources very, very well. Anatomy lab is rooms with about 6 tables per room, and faculty roam around helping out. Yes, professors make themselves quite available as I said above. The organization does not improvement (getting notes on time and such), but that is largely due to the fact that this is their first time with the new curriculum. It has gotten better for the class below me and will continue to get better. I enjoy the school, and Memphis is a fun place to be and learn medicine. Hope this gives some guidance.
BabaRelax 12-06-2012, 12:00 AM I'm an M1 at UT. Looking at doomsday post way up there, I haven't caught a whiff of any of that here from anyone. I like going to school here.
Dreamer9713 12-06-2012, 07:00 AM Thanks for weighing in, guys! I figured as much (and had to laugh at the 'doomsday' comment), but it helps to hear it straight from actual students.
My impression was that this school seems to be a really friendly, helpful,'team' kind of atmosphere. Certainly not without its flaws, but what program isn't? The overall vibe was a good one--glad to hear you guys can back that up with personal experience.
I appreciate the feedback! Good luck as you round out your semester... :)
Guero 12-06-2012, 09:51 AM Are there any perks to the anatomy lab (e.g., hanging iPads at each table)? Stupid question though it may be, I've visited a school that had this, which was amazing. Definitely not going to attend solely based off of a perk like this, but good to know nonetheless. I hate it when we can't tour the anatomy lab. :(
TreyT 12-06-2012, 10:10 AM Nope. It's pretty basic.

Dreamer9713 12-06-2012, 02:07 PM I agree-- pretty basic, no frills. A hallway of rooms, segregated off with a set number of tables in each room. The students who gave our tour said about 4-6 people per table, with a few professors roaming in each room. Lockers are at the end of the hallway, and you have 24/7 access to the lab.
You choose your own anatomy lab partners during orientation week. (Not sure how that works, since most people really don't know anyone... but it must be fine, since they've done this for awhile.)
It's one of 3 courses taken the first semester, and it's stretched out over the full semester (as opposed to QCOM, for example, where you only do anatomy, and it's done after the first 11 weeks.) Different strategies...both seem to work fine.

One thing I lol at now (and I include myself in this) is that med students will complain about errything, usually about stuff that it not a big deal. We gripe enough about stuff to make a First World Problem's meme every day for the next 100 years.

Is it ETSU that has the hanging iPads? I thought I saw something about that. Anyways, our lab is pretty normal. Nothing fancy, it gets the job done.
Guero 12-06-2012, 03:02 PM Yup, it was QCOM for those curious. It's pretty wicked because they have an app to help you locate and name structures if you get stuck. There's are indeed a bunch of perks, but much less access to inner city presentations (e.g. GSWs, hard drug presentation volume, etc).

Quillen is awesome. I have seen some iPad apps for anatomy that are pretty amazing. IMO in TN, we are lucky to have schools like UT and ETSU. Can't go wrong.
Dreamer9713 12-07-2012, 06:45 AM I couldn't agree more! Both our state schools produce amazing physicians, even though their strategies and facilities are different. I feel really lucky to be applying in Tennessee! There are so many strengths to each program, and so much to choose from... good stuff all around.

Yup yup, we're so fortunate to have 4 schools in our state, especially considering its size and the schools' qualities/strengths.

i was OOS. interviewed 11/5 and got accepted 11/29.
GreenSky1957 12-15-2012, 09:05 PM Have the decisions been made for interviewees of 12/3?
Dreamer9713 12-15-2012, 10:01 PM They met on Friday, so Nelson said to expect letters next week...
Dreamer9713 12-19-2012, 03:51 PM You know, the more I think about it...I bet we'll have to wait until after New Years. I don't think he realized that they'd be out for Christmas break this week. If they met on Friday, 12/14 (and he said they were), I doubt any letters will go out until they get back. We can hope, though! It would be a nice Christmas present to have a decision!
TreyT 12-20-2012, 05:01 PM Rejected. I don't understand. I've been waitlisted the past 2 cycles. I've improved my application both times. I thought my interview went well. I just don't understand.

Here's the kicker: Had an acceptance from LMU, but they required a $1200 deposit due last Friday. Because of the early interview here and how confident I felt after (which I never do coming out of an interview) I turned it down. I'm going to call in the morning and pray that there's some sort of mistake. I just don't get how I can be in a worse position after doing everything they've told me to do. My interviewer was very complimentary of me during the interview. I didn't say anything outrageous. I'm baffled.

Dreamer9713 12-21-2012, 07:19 AM Aw, man--so there goes my whole "we'll have to wait until after Christmas" theory! Congratulations on the acceptance AllDay, and I'm so sorry for the rejection, Trey...that has to be such a disappointment after two waitlists. Hopefully it was a mistake??
Guess I'll be opening my mailbox and trying not to pass out over the next several days!! This wait is such an emotional roller coaster.

I don't know anyone else going here, or I'd start a facebook group. It would be helpful finding a roommate!
I was accepted a bit earlier, and I'd join the facebook group :) I haven't decided if I want a roommate or not, so I would be interested in starting to get to know my other potential classmates!

It took forever for me. I think I received mine back in September and received my official II early January. I did, however, email and ask for a status update in November and was told they had made the decision to interview me but that it hadn't yet been scheduled. I hope that helps. Good luck!

Meh. It's not that early. They began in October, so relatively speaking, yes. Most schools begin interviews in July/August, which is 2 to 3 months ahead of UT. So it's kind of like we're interviewing on October of a regular season. Okay, now that I'm reading my own crap, yes, we interviewed early. LoL
My friend (an M1) interviewed very early last cycle (November) and was accepted just before Christmas. I'm hoping the same timeframe applies to us.

Awesome! I'm glad I could help. I mean, how many schools outright say, "Yes, we're interested and would like to interview you. We just don't yet know when."? I think that is so awesome. Every other school has made me wait for actual notice. :(

Took me more than one year to get that coveted acceptance letter so don't be discouraged if you don't get in the first time - there are so many opportunities available to you that will forever be lost in the past if you get in. Just continue to run the race!
Just got a "survey is in the mail" email!!!!!
Vol 4 Life 02-08-2013, 07:54 PM Just got a "survey is in the mail" email!!!!!
Is that the same as your admission decision letter?
Guero 02-09-2013, 08:36 AM Is that the same as your admission decision letter?
Kind of, you'll know whether you're in the "no final decision" realm, accepted, or rejected. Good luck!!
Vol 4 Life 02-09-2013, 08:49 AM Do they notify everyone when their letter is in the mail? They told us on our interview day that letters would be sent out yesterday (Friday, the 8th).
Guero 02-09-2013, 10:03 AM Do they notify everyone when their letter is in the mail? They told us on our interview day that letters would be sent out yesterday (Friday, the 8th).
No, if your interviewer was busy, they may not've been able to discuss your app. If you didn't get the email, you'll probably have to wait until next week. :(
Guero 02-09-2013, 06:09 PM Okay, so my second interview day was very different from my first one last year. It began the same, with small treats, juices, and coffee available while we waited for the other interviewees to show up and were regaled by Dean Strother's awesome sense of humor. Once everyone arrived (sans someone who failed to withdraw and just didn't show), he began with the usual introduction and sales pitch. Now, since I'm writing this so far after my interview, it gets a little fuzzy at this point as far as an accurate timeline; so please forgive me if someone posts to dispute the ensuing series of events.
After Dean Strother's spiel, one person had her first interview while the rest of us went on a tour with Diane Harris. I think she just showed us where our interviews were taking place and escorted each of us to our interviews at different times. We were instructed to meet back up in the student center near the lecture halls. Dean Strother told us which lectures were scheduled that day and encouraged us to sit in. However, the last 3 of us that followed her all the way to the student center before being escorted to our respective interviews were instead kept by Diane Harris as she gave us copious amounts of interview advice/pointers and well wishes (good hearted as it was, I'd personally rather have sat in a class).
After we all had our first interviews (new applicants) or one and only interview (reapplicants), we met up with current students for a brief tour as we headed back to the admissions office for lunch with M1-M4s. The lunch consisted of your choice of a turkey or veggie wrap, turkey chili, chips, a cookie, and a beverage. After we asked tons of questions with stuffed mouths, we went on another student-led tour, the most comprehensive and well informed tour I've been on. As we toured, other students had to leave for their second interviews. We toured pretty much everything relevant to being a med student: library, student center, lecture halls, gym, SAS (where you can check out books and schedule tutors), and, most importantly, the anatomy lab. Getting in was a bit funny. First, the two students that led the afternoon tour were surprised that the morning students told us that we weren't allowed in. So we went down there and pulled a weird speak-easy type-entrance: A student knocked on an, unmarked, industrious looking inconspicuous door down the hall. A few seconds later an overly-cautious lady poked her head out and exchanged a few brief words with the student before opening the lab for us. And it's pretty nice. There are a bunch of hand-washing stations at the entrance, exit, and interspersed between separated but open rooms with two cadaver tables each. There were many cadavers out, though respectfully covered; and the smell was more than tolerable. I was surprised. That baby is WELL ventilated! w00t. And you'll have 4 people to cadaver except one or two groups that will have 5 depending on how many people choose to matriculate and if they fill the class to capacity.
I believe that was the last and final place we toured before returning to the admissions office to turn in our visitor badges before leaving.
Now for some additional info (I'll post my impression from last year at the very bottom of my MDApps if you're curious).
• The student exercise facility includes rock climbing wall, lap pool, Jacuzzi, racquet ball courses, exercise classes, and your gamut of workout machines. Its hours are 6a to 9p on weekdays.
• There's a new curriculum with an integrative style (e.g., cover how the molecular concepts relate to the gross anatomy concepts), an organ systems approach in 2nd year, weekly PBL groups, and course material/exams presented in clinical vignettes to better prepare you for USMLE Step 1 (further info available on UT's website).
• UT offers early senior, specialty rotations that take place before residency apps in an attempt to facilitate specialty choice among M3s.
o 3rd year core rotations end in May, allowing you May to September 1st (when NRMP opens for residency applications), to pursue specialty rotations.
• UT offers 24 NIH-funded summer research fellowships to UT M1 applicants applying with a research proposal to take place during the summer between M1 and M2. This research must be with a local PI at the medical school.
• UT also offers a funded international opportunity via a Global Health perspective. More info is available on their website: COM Site > Student Affairs > Student Organizations > Council on International Health Outreach.
• UT now offers a master's in health policy for those interested, but not an MPH at this point. They said they're trying to open a school of public health.
• For those interested in the MD/PhD, you apply once your accepted, a separate process. But the program is NOT an MSTP: you will be responsible for the entirety of your pre-clinical and clinical cost of attendance. You WILL, however, be provided a tuition waiver and stipend during your graduate phase.
• Last, but not least, UT says they require you to do an away rotation in Nashville (Baptist), UT Chattanooga (free housing provided), or UT Knoxville (free housing provided). But if you have a good enough excuse, the students tell me you can be excluded.
I hope this helps. Feel free to send me or post any of your questions.
TealC 02-09-2013, 08:29 PM Congrats! It's over! :)
Thanks and now I can relax.
Renae 02-10-2013, 07:21 PM Hey everyone!
Good luck to those still waiting for an acceptance or an interview! I am still waiting to hear back from one other school. If not accepted there, I'm going to UT :)!
I want to start thinking about places to live. I live in East Memphis right now, but will move close to campus if I am rejected at the other institution. I would LOVE to be able to walk to school. Are there any places close enough/safe enough for this? Thanks in advance.

That's what I was afraid of! I know plenty of people that live in midtown, dtown, or mud island. Guess I'll keep my eyes open.
confuciusjs 02-11-2013, 05:45 PM There's also a fb group/page for the 2017 class at http://www.facebook.com/groups/410870655663516/
as more people join there may be others who are looking for housing as well. Really excited about starting in the fall and getting to know everyone

jwhiteh6 02-12-2013, 06:25 AM Vol 4 Life, when did you interview? I interviewed on the 30th and Mrs. Harris told me that my letter was being mailed yesterday when I asked.
I have not received a survey or email notification that my letter was being mailed (until I asked). Is this a bad sign?! I'm reapplying and was feeling pretty good about my improvements until I interviewed with Dr. Heston :(

I e-mailed her on Saturday and she told me that it was on the way then, so I'm pretty sure they sent them all out on Friday. I think she may have been busy this weekend and didn't get to send e-mails out to everyone (I interviewed the 30th as well). To be honest, I don't know if it's a bad sign or not haha. Looking at past years, it looks like we're getting ours right about the time that everyone starts getting waitlisted. I sure hope there is still room in the class though :/ I wish we had an update on how much room is left.
Soo... I just got a "no final decision" letter with my survey.... Is this a postponed death sentence or do I really still have a chance?? HELP
Vol 4 Life 02-12-2013, 02:29 PM They usually accept between 50-60 people off the waitlist every year, so you still have a chance. I'm sure I'll be getting the same letter tomorrow. I've looked back through several of the threads and see very few acceptances from February to March.
BrainyBruin13 02-13-2013, 10:02 AM I interviewed Feb 4th and I'm assuming the committee met on Friday the 8th to discuss me. Do they send out letters that day or do they send them out the following Friday? I'm still confused even though Diane Harris explained it.

Same! I tried to set mine up, it wouldn't work, & Mrs. Harris sent me a message basically telling me to wait a couple more months.

I set mine up last year but I couldn't log in when i tried. Now i'm not sure if i just dont remember my password or if it doesnt work anymore...maybe I'll email Diane in a few days and see what's up
aarond 02-14-2013, 04:26 AM I received my netid in the middle of December from Ms. Edwards (about three weeks after acceptance which is about two after returning the short acceptance form). I did just remember that at least for me, hopefully it's corrected now, I had issues with it saying to use last four of student ID number on the email and actually needing my last four of SSN. Not sure if the email was explaining it wrong or my ID login was actually set up incorrectly but it worked first try when switched. When I emailed she said they were in the process of correcting it.
It might seem annoying to some people but UTHSC keeps you informed through email very thoroughly of what's going on. They send daily emails with stuff happening that day on campus, additional resource emails, etc. I think it's great personally though.
I received info about the processing fee like two weeks ago as well, it was sent through my other email on file, not the UTHSC one, but requires your login in stuff for UTHSC servers to send payment.
Feel free to ask questions about what I just wrote, I do check this thread several times a day out of excitement for other peoples acceptance so don't PM me unless it is more personal because I want other people to see responses if possible.
It's sixish am, I'm not a morning person and I'm typing this on my phone in bed, so forgive mistakes and spelling/grammar errors.

BrainyBruin13 02-21-2013, 02:26 PM Welp. "No decision has been made"
Does anyone have a more solid idea of what this means? Is it better than being on the waitlist?
Vol 4 Life 02-21-2013, 02:48 PM They don't have a waitlist yet. Most of the people that receive the "no decision has been made" letter eventually are put on the waitlist at the end of April. I received the same letter a week or so ago. I've looked back through all of the threads of past years, and they very rarely offer acceptances after the first week of February. There is a lot of movement in May though.
They formulate the ranking of the waitlist in April and you can call to see where you're at on the list. Top 50 and you should make it in.
msrmb2310 02-22-2013, 11:14 AM I've had friends who are there say that it's a lot harder to get in if you're coming straight out of undergrad. Anyone else heard this?
Guero 02-22-2013, 11:34 AM I've had friends who are there say that it's a lot harder to get in if you're coming straight out of undergrad. Anyone else heard this?
I don't think so. They accept fresh grads and nontrads equally from what I've seen and judging by their student body. GL
TN32WNJ 02-23-2013, 11:44 AM (Sorry if this is a dumb question) from what I've read people say Diane Harris sends an email out when letters are in the mail. Is the email always the same to those accepted and those wait listed and rejected? Because from the way she said it on interview day it sounded like those accepted got an email about an acceptance packet but others would get an email saying basically survey stuff.
Gerudo 02-23-2013, 01:05 PM I only got an email about a survey before I received my acceptance packet if I recall correctly.
TN32WNJ 02-23-2013, 11:00 PM Thanks! I was just curious because I got the survey email at like 1 in the morning a couple days ago (I have no clue why so late at night).
Interviewed in early January, "continue to review" list a couple of weeks later. Has anybody thats been placed on that list this year heard anything since? I know that usually means waitlist in April but just curious if anybody had beaten the odds and gotten accepted off that list?
doctorwho17 02-24-2013, 09:14 AM Hey, I knew when I interviewed some of the students talked about a Spring Housing weekend where they invited students down to Memphis to tour housing options and meet roommates. Has anyone heard any details of when this is or anything. Thanks.

Nope, but I think you get that email a little later, like around April or May, in your new UTHSC email. I can ask my friend (an M1) if you'd like. Just let me know.

We all get the same email. I was rejected last year after a no decision notice and got that same email before both the survey and no decision letter arrived on the same day. Don't read too far into it. Good luck!

Not sure about a "Spring Housing weekend" but there is like a housing event over the summer (or was it during orientation...) where you can meet others also looking for housing. i vaguely remember something about it last year...
Guero 02-26-2013, 06:28 PM FYI, for those of you wondering when the housing weekend will take place, I just received the email: 5/31 to 6/2, must RSVP by 5/24.

Guero 03-01-2013, 09:10 AM I am interview this coming Wednesday with Drs. Latta and Presbury. Is anyone joining me? Does anyone have any experience with either of these gentlemen (I know someone mentioned earlier that their interview with Presbury was ethics-heavy)?
Also, Dr. Presbury is at Le Bonheur, not at the UTHSC campus; is there any kind of transportation or direction available, or am I on my own getting there?
First, congrats on the interview! All I've heard about Dr. Presbury is that he's a bit of a difficult and thorough interviewer. What I do know, is that Ms. Harris will show you how to get to your interview; you won't be on your own.
I wish you the best of luck! :luck:

I had Dr. Presbury. He asked for my opinion on PPACA but did not grill me in any way. He responded to my answer with a mini-rant about how he thought it didn't go far enough with regards to it's coverage. I'm not suggesting you should change whatever opinion that you have because of this information, but you shouldn't think he will demand you justify anything. We talked a lot about my family and where I saw myself in 10, 15 years. It was not bad, he seemed like a great guy. You need to go into it being confident, it was my first interview of this season but it worked out.
Also, you'll probably interview in a pediatric waiting room... and it's less than a five minute walk down the road from where you meet. Diane Harris will probably walk you there herself.

True. I am hearing that they are slower to interview than in the recent past, though.
The number of posts in this thread sort of anecdotally confirms that.

They award 5 to the top 15 matriculants after a bit of competition. UT is not very scholarship friendly :/ They also offer help to the top 10% each year. I'm not sure how substantial that help is.

I'd email. Dean Strothers is very prompt when returning emails. :luck:!
superbatxs 03-12-2013, 05:50 PM Hi,
I was called for an interview in February (last month) with an MCAT of 25. My interview went very well, and the interviewers said they would try to get me into med school. I'm on the wait list with that score, but I retook it in January and scored a 28 (a little below the average). My verbal score was the concern before, but I've gotten an 8. Dr. Strother said the new score is fine, and I shouldn't have to retake the MCAT.
I'm still a bit concerned about what will happen. Can they move my spot up on the wait list? I feel like I would have gotten in if I scored a 28 the first time around. And I'm still uncertain about the future. I think I should be able to get in eventually? My GPA (3.64 overall, 3.84 science) and extracurriculars are fine. I've also ran track.

There's no telling at this point whether or not they will indeed bump you up on the WL. But it is possible, to answer your question. It also looks great that you improved. Hang in there and good luck!
superbatxs 03-12-2013, 05:55 PM Thanks for the quick reply! And if I take a gap year, should I be fine for next year then?
Guero 03-12-2013, 06:00 PM Thanks for the quick reply! And if I take a gap year, should I be fine for next year then?
You're very welcome. I believe you can get a better answer from the admissions department themselves via post-rejection counseling. Anyone want to chime in on that? I can't remember if they're still offering that to students.
But I do know the rejection letter will cite the reason for your rejection. I imagine it'd be better to retake the MCAT if you think you can raise it even further. Hopefully you get in this year and all this advice is moot. :naughty:
superbatxs 03-12-2013, 06:35 PM We can just hope for the best. And Dr. Strother recommended I do not take the MCAT again, since he was concerned about my score dropping the next time around. The implication is that the score should be fine, especially considering the average at UT is around 29/30 (suggests many people got in with a 27 or 28). And hopefully the admissions committee bumps me up. I'm just happy I got on the wait list with a 25, lol. :)
Guero 03-13-2013, 06:19 AM FYI, for those students outside the UT system in undergrad that received the Net ID instructions, the "last four of your student ID" is actually the last four of your social. I initially couldn't log on and had to submit a help desk ticket. PM me if you're confused; I'll walk you through the process.

She is usually quick, but today is a huge mailing day, so I'd give her some time. You can always call if it's very important.

ah ok, thanks.
We can just hope for the best. :)
If you think you can raise that MCAT anymore, I would probably go ahead and retake it. I have been in a similar situation. I applied last year and was waitlisted (28 MCAT, 3.6 GPA, Psych major). I talked to Strother and he recommended that I not retake the MCAT but take more upper division biology courses. I'm about to complete a BCMB degree and have done really well in those classes but it is still looking like I'm just gonna be waitlisted again this year. I kinda wish I had just retaken the MCAT so I wouldn't be in this situation again for the second year in a row. Good luck.
member1285 03-18-2013, 11:10 AM Seems like most correspondence now is the "no decision made" letter. Is this typical in March-April? Seems like acceptances happen in that time frame (based on threads from previous years), but are fairly rare even for competitive candidates.
Is it safe to assume that people being interviewed now are for slots on the wait list?
member1285 03-18-2013, 11:22 AM Hi,
I was called for an interview in February (last month) with an MCAT of 25.
Based on everything I've read, your stats are pretty competitive for UT (especially your GPA and 28MCAT, assuming balanced). You'll probably have some luck moving up on the wait list. Seems like your interview went well.
RachtheRedhead 03-20-2013, 01:23 PM Has anyone who interviewed the week of March 6th heard anything? I haven't heard a peep and I'm getting antsy :scared:
It seems like not everyone is getting the "your survey is on the way" email this year?
msrmb2310 03-22-2013, 07:46 AM The committee is suppose to meet today for those who interviewed within the past two weeks, right? How soon should we expect to hear something?
cclewis 03-23-2013, 04:06 PM The committee is suppose to meet today for those who interviewed within the past two weeks, right? How soon should we expect to hear something?
If I recall correctly, it took about 1.5-2 weeks before I received my decision letter in the mail. (For reference, I live in East TN). The survey came earlier (~1week).
TN32WNJ 03-25-2013, 09:10 AM Anyone know if they are still interviewing applicants or not? I'm just curious.
HokieMD1 03-26-2013, 05:15 PM I have a quick question for those in the know at UTHSC that is very important to me. Your replies would be MUCH appreciated. Should I retake the MCAT or not? My MCAT scores are easily the weakest aspect of my application. I am scheduled for May 18th.
The skinny on me:
- 3.62 cum GPA, 3.5 sGPA from a very large, southern, top 20 public institution
- 28S MCAT (9,9,10) - though this is from a 2nd attempt (1st was a 8,7,10) -- had a very poor test experience, computer literally shut off in middle of VR.
- EMT for 2.5 years, as well as volunteering, lots of clinical/shadowing, the works ..
- 2 semesters of research, no pubs or anything though
- Just accepted a full-time Research Assistant position at Vanderbilt Univ.
- In addition to my 40 hr./week job, I will be taking graduate coursework at Vanderbilt, in biology (immunology, upper-level physio, etc.) I plan to take 3-4 courses within the next year.
- I am a 23 yo, white male. I will be 24 for my hopeful start of medical school in 2014
I have already spoken with UT faculty about residency requirements and been told personally that with my new job, I will be deemed a Tennessee resident. Via my close friend that is an MS1 there and in addition to looking at the MSAR, I know that TN residency is a huge advantage (his roommate, a TN resident, got in off the WL with a 26)
I know that UT's mean or median (not sure which one) scores are (10,10,10). Because I'm so close to those scores, I'm really wrestling with assessing the risk of retaking the MCAT.
However, this will be my third application cycle. In the first, my MCAT was way too low and in the second, I applied too late. Collectively, I have received 2 MD interviews and 2 DO interviews (though the DO invites came AFTER the Vandy job, so I did not attend them). I had to take my opportunity at the time, as nothing else was on my schedule, so I signed a lease and committed to living in Nashville for a year.
I really would like to go to MD school, and I know that my scores and numbers are right on the fringe. I think that the upper range of my ability on the MCAT is probably a 32 or 33, but it would require studying time that I'm just not sure that I have. However, I am obviously very familiar with MCAT material. Considering both my Tennessee residency but also the fact that this is my third time in the game and that I am really not trying to do this again, what are your guys thoughts?
What do you guys think my chances are of being outright accepted to UTHSC?
Thanks so much, in advance!

I don't know how others feel, but from personal experiences and what I've heard when I was applying, I think if you apply early in the cycle, your MCAT shouldn't hold you back esp. if you're applying as an in-state applicant. Also, if you don't expect it to increase drastically (as in only about 3 points change) and if it's going to require time you don't have, I don't think it's worth it to retake the MCAT. I definitely think a 28S should be fine for UT...but I'm also curious as to what others have to say.
RyanP89 03-27-2013, 06:43 PM Just wanted to clarify, are there different emails sent notifying no decision or acceptance before the decision letter is mailed? Or does everyone get the "your survey will be mailed" email? Still kind of confused on the system

Everyone gets the email telling you the survey is on the way. The only communication about the committee decision to accept, reject, or not make a decision is the letter that will come in the mail.
TN32WNJ 03-27-2013, 07:59 PM Hokie it sounds like you'll be very competitive at UT, but that's just my opinion.
ESPN Junkie 03-29-2013, 10:03 PM Have any of you been accepted to both UT and ETSU? If so, how are you deciding between the two? I feel like I would like ETSU better the first two years, but UT better for M3 and M4. I like that UT allows you do do your second two years split up between Memphis, Chattanooga, and Knoxville. I have heard that UT is having some issues with its new curriculum though. Any thoughts?
RockyTopDoc 03-31-2013, 11:29 PM I am a current M4 and will be giving the clinical tours this week at UT. If anyone has questions I'd be happy to reply.
Congratulations to those who have been accepted and good luck to those still waiting/interviewing!

I'm definitely in that boat, as are a few other people with whom I've been conversing. I agree entirely with your sentiment between the first and second halves at each school. But I'm leaning toward UT for several reasons: would rather live in the city, much more opportunities for research, suture tech opportunity (I'm very interested in surgical specialties), utterly unbridled clinical experience during rotations, and the presence of several friends a year ahead of me. It's always nice to have friends nearby to not only mentor you, but to help you through the hard times ahead.
I hadn't really stated the above openly until now. I've mainly kept these thoughts in PMs, but felt it was time to come clean. Both last year and this year, I was leaning toward ETSU based on small class size and the newness of their facilities but changed my mind after thinking long and hard about both places.
That said, I'm still holding my acceptance at ETSU in the rare hopes that they might issue a scholarship. They tend to offer a LOT of aid; but I've heard they don't release decisions until after May 15th. :/ We'll see...
I hope this helped. Feel free to PM me for further discussion.

So I have been accepted to ETSU and put on waitlist at UT. I would also say that I am leaning towards UT now but obviously have no qualms with attending ETSU. Is it best to just wait right now or should I send UT a letter of interest? Don't think I saw any thing on this thread about how Strothers or UT admissions respond to LOI? Thanks.

I'd send a LOI. It certainly couldn't hurt. I've sent a few and know they help, especially if they're substantive!

medschoolpleez 04-02-2013, 05:32 PM I just got my interview invite for next Monday, I know this is just going to leave me on the waitlist, but still excited about it. If anyone's interviewed with Dr. Gallant and has any advice or information that might be helpful, it would be really appreciated. Also a quick question about how the interviews are conducted, do the interviewers have access to your grades, gpa, mcat, etc or is it like ETSU where that information is closed? Thanks for any help

One interview they have everything (essays and grades) and the other interview, they only have your essays (no MCAT or grades). They should make it clear in the beginning of hte interview what information they have.
Anyone can feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Nope, that about sums it up: One is heavily grade and performance based while the other is heavily ethical and personal background based.

Dr. Gallant is a little weird but he is a nice guy. He is an older man, a psychiatrist relocated from New Orleans after Katrina. With me, he asked all the basic questions about my grades and mcat and stuff. ("Why did you do worse in this class?" "Do you think you could handle the course load in med school?" etc) He also asks some pretty weird questions; he reads off some quotes and asks you what you think they mean. Just take a second to think about them before you spit out an answer and you should be fine. Overall, the interviews are pretty relaxed. Just be confident and you'll do fine. Good luck!

thanx, i also have Dr. Nutting from physiology. how is he? do you guys think that we are interviewing for waitlist spots?
also, does he direct the interview? cause, i really want to talk about my research, so is he open to me just talking about what i want.

I believe I and a few others elaborated on Dr. Nutting earlier in the thread. Try searching his name.

I don't know anything about Dr. Nutting but they are almost certainly only doing waitlist offers right now. I interviewed last year in February and was told by my interviewer that they had already offered all the acceptances they could and the best they could do was waitlist. With that said, a lot of people get in off the shortlist here so I wouldn't give up yet. Just be ready for the wait.

I looked back and found that we didn't actually describe Dr. Nutting. He's a professor of Physiology, been there quite a long time, loves dog shows, is a bit eccentric, tries to catch you off kilter a couple times, but overall conducts fair and pleasant interviews. Don't try to latch on to his obsession with show dogs unless he starts talking about it; many interviewees think it's a good idea to latch on to his hobby at the outset. That'd be a mistake. Good luck!
On a side note, I'll be withdrawing my acceptance May 15th and genuinely hope it goes to one of you all on the waitlist. I'll be matriculating at OHSU but need to hang on to this in case something goes terribly wrong registering for one last class I need to matriculate at OHSU.

Things change year by year. That said, sometimes people are misinformed when talking to interviewees and unintentionally spread misinformation. Don't worry about the status of seats; just do your best at the interview and exhude passion. :) Good luck!
