My experiences with Wake Forest's medical school interview day (http://www.theherocomplex.com/wake-forest-interview/). Hopefully it will help some of you all when the time comes. Good luck!

Please PM the essays or lack thereof to me when the secondary is available and I will update this.

Good luck to everyone applying! :luck:

Anyone have info on OOS applicants? I love Wake Forest and almost went there for undergrad but I'm a FL resident.

Well it is a private school, so they don't have to accept a certain number of IS or OOS applicants. I don't know the exact statistics, but I know a lot of out of staters apply. If you loved it there, I would definitely go for it.

Looks like 70 out-of-state vs 50 in-state. Considering applying here. GPA is about on par, depends on how well I do on the MCAT.

Wake has been known to waitlist some applicants with super high numbers, so it's not all numerical stats for them. I think they really are looking for people who fit and who really want to be at Wake. Let them know how much you adore them. It worked for me - they seem to like being shown a lot of love. I won't be attending this year, but I was happy to be accepted to this great school.

I didn't have stellar stats, but I had job experience, maturity and a definite interest in going to Wake. That was 6 years ago. No BS interest in a program DOES mean something - whether you're talking about medical school or residency.

What's the best way as an applicant that you can come across in an application showing a lot of interest, but not sounding too kiss butt and suck up? Letters of interest if you haven't received an interview invite within a month or two? Writing well thought out extremely detailed secondary essays incorporating things off their website and how you think it will fit you as a medical student? Any other pieces of advice?

Is there anything you can do before the receipt of a secondary to express that a school is your first choice? Letter of intent, visiting, calling - anything like that? Wake is 100% my top choice, but I'm a non-traditional student with a lower than average undergrad GPA (but excellent post-bacc gpa) and I'm so concerned about being rejected pre-secondary!

I doubt it matters. If we could, I would send a letter of intent to every single school I applied to telling them they are my top choice. Save it for if you get put on the wait list.

+1.

What are chances it will be identical to last years? The opinion from 2011-2012 is that showing a genuine interest in wake is crucial to an interview/acceptance. Pre-writing can't hurt!

It is in the email with the link. Also, I am a little surprised you didn't know they pre-screened. Wake Forest is pretty awesome in a lot of ways but especially because they look at your app and decide if you would be a good fit BEFORE you submit an expensive secondary fee. The fact that they address the financial burden faced by students applying is pretty awesome and makes me want to attend even more now, which is terrible because this is a reach school for me :(

Based on last year's thread,

7,400 primary applications submitted
2,450 secondary applications submitted
540 interviews
225 accepted
120 matriculated.

The message many of us have gotten means we made it to round 2.

And BTW my stats are cGPA 3.91, sGPA 3.90, MCAT 34S, OOS

Nah, just tell them during your interview and on your secondary. If you get wait-listed, then tell them every month until they admit you. :)

I wouldn't worry if you haven't gotten a message yet. It takes a bit to get through these things.

If you are talking about applying primary, I was screened in with much lower stats than you. With no ties to NC or neighboring states.

As far as secondary, I don't know. I am a long shot but I really love this school so I'm going to ahead and pay for the secondary. Don't get discouraged. Some secondary screenings may be mostly about stats but the entire app process ultimately isn't.

i was verified on the 28th.. my roommate wasn't verified until like 4 days later but she got her primary receipt email from them on 7/5 which is why i'm concerned. also, her MCAT score is almost 10 points lower than mine so there's no way it's based on numbers or something...

Hey guys! I talked to admissions office yesterday. I have been told that their first download from AMCAS experienced a lot of technical problems so they did not end up getting anywhere near all the primary apps from their first download. They only go back every 2 weeks for another download so its just a waiting game as of now! Hope this calms your nerves!

that's fine, but not what i'm asking. i'm wondering how many people who receive the secondary are offered an interview invite (e.g., last year, 1000 received secondary, and 400 were interviewed). not extremely important, but curious what are my odds at this point.

Got the rejection status for this round as well, which is a little preplexing considering I interviewed here last round and am currently still on the wait list.... which seems to suggest that I'm competitive for the class of 2012 but not the class of 2013? Well then. Good luck all

Well, my status was updated to the "secondary on its way" status from the "we will email you an update" status. I'm just saying that you guys who still have the "we'll update you via email" just haven't been screened in/out yet. Idk though, could be wrong.

I just find it very hard to believe that I would get screened in (3.00c/3.14s/33) and others wouldn't even though they have higher stats. I'm URM, but still. I doubt seeing URM status is part of an initial stat screen.

Please discuss how such factors have influenced your goals and preparation for a career in medicine.

2. What do you see as the most likely practice scenario for your future medical career?
Why do you believe that you are particularly suited for this practice scenario?
What knowledge, skills and attitudes have you developed that have prepared you for this path?

Yup, same here. The tech issues this year are killing me...

"Tech issues" are not responsible for the wait time. The Wake secondary site states that they download applications once every two weeks.

Just got my first email! How long did it take everyone's status to change from reviewing primary to approved for secondary?

My status progressed as follows:
AMCAS submitted 6/5, primary received 7/5, secondary received 7/12. It's logical to think that the wait times may increase as the cycle goes on, since there will be increasingly more applicants to review.

Yes, I know, but we all submitted early enough that we should have been in the first batch. One of the earlier posters who had contacted the school said that Wake Forest admitted there were downloading issues with the first batch, and so not all of the early applications were downloaded then.

I consider that a tech issue. The two weeks afterward, not so much.

Hey everyone,

What kinds of things did you guys write for the "what career path" question? How specific or general were you? I honestly don't know where I want my career to go, I'm interested in medicine to treat patients, prefferably in a hospital setting, but is this too general? Most doctors have at least some work within a hospital I think, although some more than others. I'm a little stumped about what to write here.

Just talk about being uncertain, but that you can envision yourself working in the inpatient environment of a hospital, and if possible, reference and talk about any clinical experiences you have had in an inpatient environment that was interesting to you. They know most premeds don't know what field of medicine they want to go in, but through clinical experiences you should have a super general IDEA of things you like more than others. Hope that helps.

mairaj24
07-22-2012, 10:51 AM
Do you think its a bad idea if you have a very specific idea of what you want to do? For example, at this point (i know this is always subject to change) I am interested in doing an EM residency followed by a critical care fellowship. I have had relevant exposure to both fields. Do you think it would be a good idea to state such intentions?

mairaj24
07-22-2012, 11:22 AM
I don't think it is a bad idea. It's not like you are saying something risky like "I am interested in a Plastics residency and building my practice around breast augmentation".

Nevertheless, prob want to indicate in there that you are still "open" to other specialties though.

Yep thats exactly what I thought. I did mention that I'm going in with an open mind. Thanks a lot!

starstarie
07-22-2012, 06:48 PM
this is just my opinion but i would be wary about just saying you are uncertain. this is the path i took last app cycle and it got me rejected. i got an interview and when i asked them why i wasnt accepted they told me that my adcom wasnt sure that i was serious about being a dr. after reflecting on it, i have concluded that i would not write that again or say that in an interview. in fact, i have changed my app to say the opposite. i have made a strong case for what i want to do and why

now i dont think you necessarily have to say that you are for sure going to do xyz, but instead you should really think about it. what aspects of your clinical experiences did you like? you MUST have liked something. For example, you like the idea of working under pressure so maybe you want to to Emergency Medicine.

I think its important to reflect on your experiences and your personality make some conclusions about which fields will best suit your needs (i feel like i just wrote another secondary... hahaha). pick one or two and discuss why they might fit with your personality.

DONT just say that you dont know. i believe it shows that you did not take enough time to truly reflect on why you are really going into medicine.

but that's just my opinion

DAPI
07-22-2012, 07:34 PM
I answered this question for another secondary, cause I thought the other option was better for me in this case, but I left it kinda generic in what specialty I wanted to go into, but made it clear I knew what I was talking about. I said I wanted to work in an academic hospital in a specialty (left generic) so I would have X, Y, and Z that are only found in the hospital settings and not in outpatient clinics. I then went into research and teaching as those are only found in a academic hospital and not just any old hospital, as those are things I want to be involved in. I used examples from my experiences in the hospital to back this up so it did not look like I was just blowing smoke. If you do not know what type of doctor you want to be, you should at least have an idea in what type of setting you want to work in.

yea so i said that i didn't know EXACTLY what i would do or EXACTLY where i would be, but i included a lot of experience as to what i would like and what I would want to include in my practice (research, teaching). i think it's better to say that you're not ENTIRELY sure, but you should have a broad idea as to what kind of things you want to include in your practice or what kind of community you want to serve. this is my two cents.

Your optimal letter will be by someone who has known you for a reasonably long time and can make strong recommendations. Mine was from work, the lab manager from one of the labs I worked at - we had known each other 2 years and he was willing to write a strong letter.

You should have a few of these people in your life: job-related, community projects etc. Ask them directly: "As you know, I'm applying to medical school. Would you feel comfortable writing me a strong letter of recommendation?" By asking this way, it offers the person in question 2 outs. If they don't feel comfortable, for whatever reason, or if they feel like their letter would not be "strong" they feel ok about saying no. Keep this in mind 3-4 years down the road when you're applying for residency. You'll need to use the same strategy.

"Your Secondary Application has been recieved. If your recommendation letters have been received by AMCAS we will be loading them into our system soon.* We do this in batches so please allow 2-3 weeks for your file to be complete."

Submitted the secondary 7/23

Don't worry. I had that stays and then once they received them they switched it to state my app was reviewed

me too, and that is why it's annoying. The same thing happened to me with VCU though, so I guess some schools just take longer than others

How acceptable/unacceptable would submitting a 13 page essay be for the first essay? Will it seem completely obnoxious? I essentially go through four different life experiences and challenges I've faced that will help me be a better physician. I'm extremely specific and give a lot of details. I can cut it down a little but THIS IS the edited version (the original was 15 pages!). On one hand I feel like it is obnoxious but on the other hand it is unlimited space for a reason. What do you guys/gals think?

Thanks!

If I was an adcom member I would round file it and just use the rest of your app to gage you. You may also get a few negative points in my book for not realizing the value of time when reviewing apps.

But I'm not an adcom, so do what you want.

I see where you're coming from, but if 'value of time' was truly of such value to admissions, then one would assume that they would have put a character or word limit on the essays. The fact that there is no character limit allows for the unique opportunity for applicants to designate the amount of time admissions will review their essays: if you write more, then they will spend more time reviewing your essay; if you write less, then they will spend less time reviewing your essay (assuming they don't round file it at the mere sight of it). This is known at the time of essay submission so it should be of no surprise, and of no disadvantage, to the applicant or the admissions representative that someone who writes more garners more time designated to their application. Every applicant has the opportunity to write just as much as I do. It is one's decision not to, if they so choose. One should note that getting more time designated to one's application is not equivalent to getting an interview, but it can be advantageous.

Enter a crazy analogy: if you're boss announces that the hardest worker will be most strongly considered for a raise, and you and your coworkers have an equal opportunity to work overtime, but only you and a few others work 120 hours overtime, then you're at a greater advantage to receiving the raise. Sure, there's the chance that you may screw some things up during those 120 hours or not be working as efficiently, but if you really focus on performing and concentrating your effort during those 120 hours, then it could mostly be to your advantage. Likewise, if I really try to condense and cut out all unnecessary, extraneous details and only provide information that is directly pertinent to the essay topic, then one must logically assume that a very long, thoughtful, and informative essay will mostly be to my advantage. If my coworkers choose not to take advantage of working overtime, then that is within their discretion and possibly to their disadvantage.

So you can do what you want. ;)
