1. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of practicing medicine in a rural or underserved area.
2. A friend of yours, who is also applying to medical school this year, has posted a compromising photo of you on Facebook and has tagged you. The Admissions Committee frequently looks at Facebook pages prior to interviews. How would you handle this with your friend ?
3. Tell us of a challenging event or a difficult obstacle in your life and how you overcame it.
4. Medicine is a team sport. Please explain this concept.
5. Share any ties you have to the state of WV.
Good luck to everyone applying! :luck:
Mountaineer12 05-10-2012, 05:05 PM Good luck everybody applying here! Morgantown is awesome I'm hoping to spend another 4 years there.

I am! I am applying to many schools other than WVU, though. I am retaking the MCAT on the 24th because I want to get my 32Q up to at least a 35. I am rather confident I can get into WVU (I've seen people way below the average scores get in due to "in state").

I think for a state school they have a good percent of OOS students (I think about 40%), but I believe those with strong ties to West Virginia or those from neighboring states have an advantage. If you have good stats I think it's worth a try! Even without stellar stats, still worth a go, some people in the 2011-2012 thread are getting in off the wait list with low stats from OOS. Good luck!

Would a New Jersey Resident with 3.6 GPA and 28 MCAT be wasting AMCAS application money to add WV to the list of schools applying to?

Do you have any ties to WV? I think for OOS your stats may be a little low, but I'm definitely not an expert. I say go for it, WVU is nice in that they only give secondaries to people they're serious about so if there's not much of chance it may not cost much to find out, but it could end up being the place you get in. There are a lot of Jersey undergrads here, I don't know if that helps at all though.
medhopeful12 07-15-2012, 01:44 PM Got this email:
"Your online secondary application information has been received. Once your secondary application materials have been received and reviewed, your confirmation will come in the form of a mailed interview letter."
Does that mean interview invite is coming? They haven't received my essays yet, just submitted the online secondary and I have good stats for their school. I only ask because I heard about the whole secondary=interview invite thing.
Anyone who knows about this?

i called last week and they told me secondary does indeed mean interview. they snail-mail it after they receive our essays and verify our letters of recommendation.

espagueti 07-15-2012, 08:27 PM I thought the secondary said LORs were accepted until the day before interviewing.
you may be right. she said they make sure one letter covers communication skills, and i just assumed that meant they verify before scheduling the interview.
medhopeful12 07-15-2012, 08:29 PM thanks!! very excited about this school
hmhoos 07-16-2012, 06:57 AM Just got this email:
"Your online secondary application information has been received. Once your secondary application materials have been received and reviewed, your confirmation will come in the form of a mailed interview letter."
Seems surprising to me that they would send this when they haven't seen the secondary essays and stuff yet, but I assume it means interview is coming for sure
positron2296 07-16-2012, 10:44 AM For the "passport quality" photo that we're supposed to mail in, are you guys planning to actually get a passport photo taken? I have a photo that I've been using for all of my applications that I just snapped at home. Is this not acceptable for this application? I'm not sure why they would ask us to upload a passport sized photo if they want us to send one in as well..
hmhoos 07-16-2012, 11:37 AM yeah, I just took one at home against a solid background, cropped to 2x2 dimensions, and printed it out on photo paper
positron2296 07-16-2012, 12:45 PM Ok, thanks! I'm going to do the same.
bluecabinet 07-18-2012, 11:17 AM I got a secondary also.
Two questions..
1. does it really mean secondary=interview?
2. communication letter required for sure? i can attest my communication skills by showing that i work at a hospital and have constant pt contact. i wouldve been fired if i was a socially inept person..

Awesome, thanks Blais.
bluecabinet 07-19-2012, 01:33 AM WVU doesn't accept secondary fee waivers?
bluecabinet 07-19-2012, 05:13 PM Hey guys so I got the secondary invite...
I'm now trying to submit my online secondary form...
I have several questions..
1) Is the "date submitted" referring to my AMCAS submission date or WVU secondary submission date?
2) How fast did you get the online secondary confirmation? I filled out everything include the photo...I pressed the "submit" button and nothing happens...I mean once I press the submit button it just reloads to the same online secondary page....Am I doing something wrong? How long did it take you guys to get the online secondary confirmation???
It says
"A CONFIRMATION OF RECEIPT OF THIS APPLICATION WILL BE SENT TO YOU BY EMAIL."
but I'm not getting any emails from them...
Help?

1. I submitted yesterday so I put yesterday's date.
2. I had this problem as well using Internet explorer. I never got the email even though I pressed submit. And it also remained on the same page. I switched to Firefox and it went through perfect. When it goes through, it takes you to a different page so you know it worked.
soon2bedoctor 07-19-2012, 05:40 PM Don't worry it'll come in an hour or so, and then the second email will come a few days later.

1)So you put your online secondary submission date, not your AMCAS submission date?
The former kind of sounds redundant..?
2)I'm on OSX...maybe that's why...I tried Firefox on OSX platform and it didn't work...so I guess if it works correctly, it's supposed to take you to a different page? I'll try it on Windows once I get back home..
Thanks!
Don't worry it'll come in an hour or so, and then the second email will come a few days later.
I mean I actually submitted it yesterday...that's why I started to suspect something did go right since nothing happens after pressing the submit button and plus I didn't get any confirmation email even today...
I'll try it on Windows Firefox platform...let's hope for the best..
bluecabinet 07-19-2012, 09:14 PM I DONT GET THIS MADNESS...
I tried Windows IE, FF, CHROME.
OSX Safari, FF, Chrome..
None of them are working.. :(
To people who were able to successfully submit...
What was your secret? Is my photo causing the error? What is going on here..?:confused::confused:
soon2bedoctor 07-19-2012, 09:18 PM I used Safari and it worked fine. I would call the admissions office tomorrow and explain your problem. Are you uploading a JPEG? How big is the file?

I put the date that I was submitting the electronic secondary form.
If it goes through, it wont remain on the same page. At first I tried fifty times on my dads laptop and it wouldn't work no matter what size the photo was. I then tried on my laptop a half hour later and it went through the first time withou an issue.
I would definitely call them tomorrow about it because of that deadline they set for you to complete it.

hmhoos 07-25-2012, 06:45 AM The application fee check that I mailed to them last Monday has been deposited, so I guess they received all of my materials and I'm hoping to get the interview invite in the mail soon!
Fortress 07-25-2012, 07:11 PM I got a secondary also.
Two questions..
1. does it really mean secondary=interview?
2. communication letter required for sure? i can attest my communication skills by showing that i work at a hospital and have constant pt contact. i wouldve been fired if i was a socially inept person..
1. For WVU you can pretty much say that: secondary = interview = wait list == acceptance
2. I don't think that ADCOMs would like to assume anything. If they require something, they expect to receive it from an applicant. >95% of applicants have worked/volunteered in a hospital, clinic, nursing home, etc. But working in a hospital does not =/= great communication skills; from time to time I feel like a live proof of this :o

Would a New Jersey Resident with 3.6 GPA and 28 MCAT be wasting AMCAS application money to add WV to the list of schools applying to?
Got pre secondary reject because of not strong ties to WV. GPA 3.91; MCAT 31Q from neighboring state KY. I wrote about parent working full time in WV and pay all taxes in WV.. They accepted strong ties.. I took my junior and senior year classes at a university and got both high school and University credits - so I'll be graduating spending two extra years in University . Now, they're saying that since since I just spent one year in University and apply next year.. i.e. I'll have a gap year... drives me crazy. I don't know what there thinking is...
I think you can protest if you have strong state ties. At least I hope you can
How do you protest? I'm on the border of WV/KY. My mom works in WV.
I have to give them credit if they're sending secondaries who they'll interview... they're not sending thousands of secondaries to collect fees.
Congrats... mind sharing your stats?
Got secondary this morning. OOS
Congratulations... just wondering what kind of OOS they're looking for.. do you mind sharing your stats. Thanks,
Fortress 07-27-2012, 07:36 PM Quite a few OOS people in my Class of 2014 were accepted with MCAT 28-30, GPA 3.7 - 3.9.

Fortress 07-29-2012, 08:16 AM Some of them do have ties, which I personally would consider as minimal, but most don't.
Fortress 07-29-2012, 08:24 AM Do you happen to know how prevalent scholarships/tuition waivers are for WVU?
Are you talking about OOS students? Not prevalent at all. Currently I am MS3 and I have NOT heard about ANY scholarship/tuition waivers available to us. I wish........ However, if you stay here after residency and practice in WV, your med school loan maybe partially or completely forgiven (in exchange for an X number of year of service).
Mountaineer12 07-30-2012, 01:14 PM Got my interview invite today! September 5th is the day :x

Mountaineer12 07-30-2012, 01:23 PM Congrats!! That's so early! Do you remember when you mailed your secondary in?
I sent it July 9th. I applied Early Decision so maybe we interview before everyone else?
Fortress 07-30-2012, 03:30 PM Contragts! Yes, you will interview before anyone else. September 5th is the 1st day WVU SOM interviews applicants. I can't wait to be a tour guide this year :)

nBeeDee 07-31-2012, 06:00 AM Woooohoooooooooo interview invite! Came in snail mail yesterday. Its set for 9/10 and I sent my app in around 7/7. I'm OOS, my only tie to WV is that I'm regional as a VA resident. My stats are 32/3.6. I'm pumped
pasiley 07-31-2012, 12:05 PM I also got the pre-secondary rejection. My first rejection of the cycle.
This surprises me a little. I know someone from the same state and UG with identical stats and less clinical experience was interviewed here.
I hope they get back to me on why I was rejected, I am really curious.

Mountaineer12 07-31-2012, 05:57 PM How long did it take you guys to get the II after you mailed in your secondaries?
It took mine exactly three weeks. I live about 100 feet from the WVU school of medicine though so it may take longer in some cases.

I have one on 9/5, but I applied early decision. I think someone a few posts back said they had one for 9/12.
I know the new class just started so maybe that put them behind a little bit.

Mountaineer12 08-27-2012, 06:28 PM So quick question for all of you OOSers, how do y'all plan on going about the whole transportation thing?
I live in Morgantown so I don't have to travel, but flying into Pittsburgh is probably your best bet. There's two buses that go to and from Pittsburgh to Morgantown twice a day: Megabus and the Mountainline bus. I believe the latter goes to airport, but I know Megabus does not. I don't think a cab from where Megabus drops off and the airport would a lot though. In Morgantown, Megabus drops you off right at the health science center by lots of hotels and the other one is bit farther away. You could probably just catch a bus or the prt to the health science campus though.

I'm OOS, but my parents live in Pittsburgh which is a short drive away. I'll probably just drive from there and use this as an excuse to go home for a bit

You can fly to Pittsburgh or Morgantown. Medical school is just 10 min away from the Morgantown airport and some hotels (ex: Eurosuites) can pick you up the at the airport, drive you to the school on your interview day, and take you back to the airport for no extra charge. I liked it, but many people who interview here for some reason still prefer to fly to Pittsburgh.

the only airline that services morgantown is united, so depending on where youre coming from it could be cost prohibitive. looked at flying either morgantown to chicago or pitt to chicago, the pitt flight was over $200 less.
Fortress 09-01-2012, 06:39 PM That is true. Most of the time during the year (but not always) flying to Pitt is cheaper. However, I also consider taxi and bus fares in addition to extra inconvenience.

Look at the last year thread for more accurate information, this subject was discussed pretty extensively at some point. But from the top of my head: IS rate is pretty high (>50%), for OOS it is somewhere around 20%.

3000 applicants for 110 spots.
200 in state apps for 80 spots
2800 oos apps for 30 spots

AllyMD 09-07-2012, 05:20 PM WVU doesn't accept secondary fee waivers?
I know that you don't need this information any longer, but in case other applicants do in the future I thought I'd reply here. The WVU site says the following:
"Does the WVU School of Medicine accept the AAMC Fee Waiver?
Yes, we do accept the fee waiver for the secondary application only. A copy of the original email received from the AAMC giving an applicant fee waiver status should be sent along with any secondary application materials." Mountaineer12 09-10-2012, 09:37 AM To anyone who has interviewed already:
What were your impressions about the school, interview, etc.?
I interviewed on 9/5. I already new a lot about the school because I went here for undergrad and work about 100 feet away from the SOM office, but I still learned a lot of cool new things and got to see some new places.
The interview was at the end of the day. From around 10-11:30 you watch some videos and talk with Cheryl, one of the admissions coordinators. She's so funny and really helps create a relaxed atmosphere.
You then go on a tour and eat lunch with two third year students from 11:30-1. This was a nice way to get some positive and negative information about the school and medicine in general.
Then you start getting called for interviews. I was first so I was done around 1:30, but I imagine the fifth person called in our group of 5 was probably there until 3:30 or 4. The interview lasted about 25 minutes. It was pretty relaxed and mostly focused on stuff that was relevant to my application only. Not a lot of generic questions like why medicine or why WVU, at least not for me. No healthcare reform or ethics questions either.
I would say to prepare make sure you're ready to answer questions about unique things in your application. They mostly focused on my minor, my tutoring experiences, and my job as a writer for the paper. Overall it was a great day. Good luck guys!!

interviewing for the MD/PhD program in December! SO excited!!!
ilovechemistry 09-24-2012, 05:34 PM I just got my interview invite for Dec 6th. Anyone interviewing that day? I just read last years thread and I have great news for the many people on here that have struggled with verbal reasoning on the MCAT. According to last years thread, an admissions person says the most important score is the biological sciences and the least important score is verbal reasoning :). Also, everyone that is out of state that interviews will either be rejected or placed on the waitlist. Being rejected is very rare and most applicants are waitlisted. Depending on the score one earns (admissions score stuff: gpa, mcat, interview, primary, secondary, ect...) will determine when they are accepted. For example, if its February and an person who interviewed on February has a higher score than one who interviewed in August, the person who interviewed in February will get in before the person in August. It is required by law in WV that out of state students are waitlisted so they can see instate people first (?). Good luck to everyone. This is a great school!

I don't think that's right. It's definitely not a law in WV as I'm out of state and I already got accepted to WVSOM. Also, I know of multiple people from out of state that got in from early decision. Many OOS may be put on the wait list but certainly not all.
ilovechemistry 09-25-2012, 11:18 AM Congratulations on your acceptance already. According to last years thread it is some kind of law. I dont know how EDP works but I doubt they are put on the waitlist then accepted. You might have been on the waitlist for less than a week. It just depends on how good of an applicant you were. Im basing this information from last year. You dont need to read that since you have been accepted but other people who have not been accepted would benefit from reading that.

I was accepted to the DO school in WV (WVSOM), not WVU (WVUSOM) :p I looked at last year's thread and there were a few OOS students who were accepted right away in October, not very many, but some. A lot were put on the wait list for different amounts of time though.
Mountaineer12 10-02-2012, 04:47 PM Accepted via EDP. OOS (PA, but went to WVU for undergrad and am living here for my gap year), 4.0 GPA, 28 MCAT (9, 9, 10).

If they let all 28 in that's almost a third of the class. I've also heard the 17 out of 17 stat from last year so I wonder if this year had 100% acceptance rate, as well. I know c/o 2014 and 2015 had 100% EDP acceptances too,

I haven't experienced this, but I don't think calling them to give them a heads up would be a bad idea. Just say you're still really interested you just didn't see the time constraint and would they be able to extend your deadline by a few days. They're super nice in the admissions office so they should be able to help you.

This late in the season it might be tough, but definitely still possible since you're in state. WVU seems to value a lot of things outside of stats so you might have a chance. Good luck!

i've also applied to marshall and have an interview there in november.
i sent in my application several weeks ago but had a pending mcat score which came out yesterday. wvu sent an email last week indicating they had received my app but were holding it until my latest score was released. i figured i would hear something in the next couple weeks, but heard, surprisingly, today.

Well, you don't have anyting to lose by calling and asking. I personally saw groups of interviewees anywhere from 4 to 9 people. So, my guess would be - they don't have a set number of applicants for each day and should be pretty flexible accomodating an extra one.

I had the problem too before I saw the requirement. I asked a current student and they said the admissions committee is pretty strict on LORs so I had to get another letter. I sent then both biology letters though, just in addition to another.
You could always call and check, they may know better than a student.

it doesnt read like that would be a problem:
"You will need to obtain at least three (3) recommendation letters as part of your application.
-Two of these letters should come from an instructor in a science course, preferably in areas such as Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics, etc.
-If you are a non-science major, a letter from a primary instructor in your major would also be helpful.
-One of your three letters must be a communication skills evaluation recommendation. This should be from someone who knows you well. This could be a professor, but we encourage you to consider someone you have worked with in a job (supervisor/employer), helped supervise or coordinate a volunteer or community service activity, a physician which has permitted your participation in a shadowing experience, or a research mentor."

The secondary states that a you can replace the two science letters with a pre-med advisor letter. Do we still have to turn in the communication skills evaluation recommendation? I submitted the premed letter and a LOR from a professor which was used in the premed committee letter- will that count?

Woah, they must have changed it! It used to be that science majors needed one letter from a science professor in their major and one from a science professor not in their major. This is still on the website in the FAQs:
You will need to obtain three (3) recommendation letters for your application: a) primary instructor in your academic degree major, b) a science instructor other than one in your major, and c) a communication/interpersonal skills recommendation from someone who knows you well and can comment on your communication skills with customers, co-workers, fellow students, etc.
I would still suggest calling just to make sure. You wouldn't want to not get accepted because of a stupid LOR discrepancy.

Yeah, I've heard that too. I wonder what the logic behind that is, because it sounds like a decent percentage of their class ends up coming from OOS

No need to apologize :) I was told that virtually everyone who is out of state gets waitlisted because they have a policy (some say law) that they first accept in state students and then later on begin to accept out of state students.
I've already been accepted to my top choice though so I'm not stressing. Anyhow, congrats on the acceptance!
I was put on hold by one of my top choices besides WVU, so I know how it feels. Hopefully, you guys will hear back soon.

Can any current comment on what we should do to get off the waitlist? Does WVU accept/read letters of interest or is it just a waiting game at this point?
We can definitely spend more time talking about it, but it was discussed pretty extensively last year. Look at that thread.
TheMasterChief 10-19-2012, 12:51 PM For anyone who has interviewed lately, how did everything go?
It's a very relaxing interview day. They'll simply ask you to elaborate on some of your activities and things written in your application, what you like to do, why you chose WVU, etc. No difficult questions or anything.
jjbodean 10-19-2012, 04:31 PM i've got a few hoops to jump through as i have just recently moved to WV before they will process my app as in state...

I'm a current MS1 from OOS. I got accepted off of the WL around May 15 or 16. They will accept letters of interest (I even wrote letters of intent) - Beth Ann said you could send up to 1 per mth to show your continued interested.
I'd be careful with this, however, because they really look at your state-status. IF you've already been accepted IN-STATE, you probably will not get off the WL here. (which I guess makes sense -- as they figure why would someone want to go to an OOS public school when they can go to an IS school)? For me, there were personal reasons why I was WVU or bust - after speaking with Beth Ann, despite my many letters of intent, it seemed I was in the "already accepted somewhere else pile" and so I don't think any of the letters got read. Once I explained my intention to attend, I was accepted almost immediately.
So my advice -- if you're banking on WV because its the only place you got an interview and/or its the only place in the running, keep sending updates. If you're already accepted somewhere else, but you REALLY want to go to WV - make sure you a) send a letter saying so and then b) call Beth Ann and make sure the admissions committee knows. If I hadn't called, I probably would have slipped through the cracks.
Despite the numbers you may see from past years -- WV is getting REALLY competitive for OOS students. Previous year's threads may show people getting off the WL late into the summer, but no one got in off the WL after June 1 for my class, I believe (this is what we were told at orientation). I guess its working as our classes exam averages have all been higher than previous years.
IF anyone has any questions, feel free to send me a message.
wtlax11 10-21-2012, 01:07 PM I know this has been answered before but can someone clear this up for me - if you are given a secondary will you automatically be invited to interview? I'm OOS and I submitted my secondary a couple weeks ago. In the email I was sent after submitting the online portion of the secondary it said give her 3-4 weeks and my "confirmation" will come in the form of an interview letter. So... does that mean a decision on an interview will come or an interview invite?

heres the exact verbiage from the email i received:
"Once your secondary application materials are complete, they will be reviewed to determine if your application will progress to the interview stage. If your secondary application is successful, you will be scheduled for an interview. No REAL ties, but I do have a cousin who lives there, and went to graduate school in DC...
I'm applying broadly, 23 schools and counting, but only schools where my stats make it seems reasonable.

I flew from California to WVU in November and to VCU in February. I was ecstatic about another opportunity to interview, and I didn't even think to whine. If it is so hard to take finals and interview at the same time, reschedule interviews, take finals earlier/later or apply next year. Med schools are not trying to kill you; they are giving you a chance, which you asked for.

Just relax and have fun! The day isn't scary until around 1 when the interviews start so you can relax and just take in everything they tell you. The interview really isn't stressful at all. Most of the questions will probably be from your app about various activities and classes. Just know your app and you'll be golden. Good luck!
For anyone who isn't familiar with the WVU health science building I would suggest going a bit early. That building is a maze and the admission office is not easy to find. There should plenty of people around to help you though.

If you're like me, bring a snack and feel free to grab something to eat while waiting to interview. I eat about 6 meals a day (so every 2.5 - 3.5 hours) so I usually eat a smaller meal. I didn't get to interview till the very end (like 3:30). I was STARVING by the time I interviewed. Otherwise, relax and have fun. They are very nice.
medguy13 10-30-2012, 10:47 AM Wow...rejected pre-secondary.
OOS 3.79 GPA from UCLA with 32M MCAT
I also have STRONG ties to West Virginia and WVU as I spent 2 months there last summer and did research/shadowing, not to mention my uncle is a physician there. Guess maybe I'm too late in the game or something?
Has anyone prtoested yet? And if so, how? It says you can protest in writing, does that mean I should just reply to the rejection e-mail pleading my case or do I have to snail mail it in?
Thanks.

Wow, great stats! It is a little late and I don't know if 2 months in West Virginia would be considered super strong ties. The physician uncle is pretty solid though. Were these two ties mentioned anywhere in your primary? I'm guessing they weren't or at least weren't elaborated on so I think you have a good chance at getting it reversed if you explain yourself and show a lot of interest in training and practicing in WV.

Well I've also been there several times before since I have lots of family living in Morgantown (five cousins and two sets of aunts/uncles). And yes they were included and elaborated on in my primary. The crazy thing is I even mentioned that trip to WVU in my personal statement as the event that most helped to solidify my decision to become a doctor.
So I'm just a little confused and disappointed at this point. :( Thanks for the reply, definitely hope the protest does something.

andrewsmack05 10-31-2012, 08:46 PM No, I am interviewing next week. Good luck to you!
hansen01 10-31-2012, 10:02 PM No generic questions. All based on your application. Hopefully your personal statement and application have been a true depiction of yourself. They review your app thoroughly to say the least. The day started at 10 and I was done just after 2. If your flying in don't forget to reserve a rental car prior on Hotwire (for the 25 and older crowd). The drive from Pitt to Morgantown was easy and had I not had to drive back west the rental would have only been $38 + gas. Still much cheaper than flying into MT (plus I had a car for the time being).
Everyone says that the interview is just to see if you are a sane/normal person. I don't really buy that. I honestly believe that they want to determine your professionalism, empathy, passion, ability to articulate, and wit. Sane/normal people can drop out, perform poorly, or just become bad docs. Interviews are conducted by experienced intelligent people who are presumably capable of identifying crucial traits in others.
Everyone also describes interviews as laid back etc. As apposed to what?
Mr./Ms. Applicant is it true that in 2009 in your freshman year that you received less than an A+ average?
Well, see that was...
Just answer the question yes or no Mr./Ms. Applicant!
Are people just expecting a large panel of black suit wearing, grey haired surgeons hum hawing over your file through the top halves of wire rimmed bifocals?
Sure they were nice and cordial but there was still a hint of expectation within the room.
Here is my advice. Respond, don't answer. There is no right or wrong just honesty. Be sharp. Try not to be repetitive but if you must, make it clear that you are aware it is a repeat (e.g. "As I mentioned earlier"). Don't plug unnecessary info...
How was your trip in?
Good, it really reminded me of my work in Africa with blind children where
I was able to apply what I had learned during the competitive research position
which I obtained as a result of my outstanding record of community service....
4.0 GPA.... 2000 hours of clinical experience.
Well then.
Silence should not be a result of your lack of response. If you have a problem in this area I suggest talking to someone about your ideals and different experiences that you have had. Engage in a conversation even if it is with yourself.
Remember idiots can use big words. Someone with real character and intelligence can be articulate using words a 5 year old can understand. (nothing against big words but they don't count for free points... ya dig?)

What was everyone's impression of the school? students? Morgantown?
jjbodean 11-03-2012, 07:23 AM i thought the school was great. now, full disclaimer: i have nothing to compare it to, since its the first school tour i've been on. the sim lab they use to help train students was pretty impressive.
students were very friendly and did a great job selling the school. indicated that the overall atmosphere is pretty laid back, while still preparing you well for the boards. very high usmle pass rate with scores above the national mean.
motown is kinda small, but spread out for a small town. its def a college town, lots of outdoor activities, and large metro areas within a short drive.

As for the interview, it's exactly as described in previous posts. Be prepared to talk about things in your application. For example, I studied abroad for a semester. The interview started off with "Tell us about your exchange experience." I could talk all day about that. Don't be surprised if you find yourself leading the conversation.

That sucks man. With that said, a year off isn't such a bad thing if you plan for it. You really do learn something with a year away from school. At least I have thus far. Though, if I was to be honest, I really wish I had either planned better and did something different, or gotten in last cycle. I just gotta be honest and admit I have learned/experienced a different set of life circumstances being away from school for the past 6 months.
squat 11-09-2012, 06:34 PM letters possibly going out today...
Huh? What? Does that mean some of us waiting for II may still have hope? (or are these acceptances that are hitting the mail box?)
pfaction 11-09-2012, 07:56 PM How'd it go? How'd it go?
It was a little bit....Sandy.
theherowedeserv 11-09-2012, 08:12 PM I'm a little confused. Are II's going out today? I turned I received that email about my only secondary being received about three weeks ago. I was under the impression that everyone who got a secondary gets an interview and I haven't yet and I'm about to go crazy lol
medikill 11-09-2012, 08:17 PM To those who are OOS, how long after mailing your secondary info did you receive the II?

Good question, I'm OOS and still waiting. VA

I think the person above was referring go acceptances, but I'm not sure. I believe there was some evidence last year that secondary didn't equal interview, but it seems this year it's true. Maybe try calling them if you're really anxious. I'm not sure there will be much communication coming up because of Thanksgiving and Christmas.
VT2013 11-10-2012, 06:25 AM I just got an II for January. Completed secondary was received by the school on 10/16. OOS VA resident. Is a January invite too late in the cycle? I feel like most of the students will be accepted by then
Mountaineer12 11-10-2012, 06:35 AM I heard from someone that applications to WVU were up 56% from last year. :o I feel like with all of those apps getting an interview is a really good thing. They're probably being super selective, especially as the cycle starts to slow down.

I believe the person was talking about decision letters. At the interview they told us that the admissions committee meets every Tuesday and then mails out letters on Thursdays.
Fortress 11-10-2012, 04:02 PM I think they stopped this last year or this year. Anyway, no essay on interview day.
Yeah, we had to write a little right before interviewing...... it was fun

No, it is not a late invite. The greatest majority of OOS applicants end up on WL anyway; and once you are on WL it doesn't matter if you interviewed in October or March.

Congrats! I just got mine today, too.
Also OOS.
Also complete on 10/16.
Also interviewing in January.
I'm optimistic. I don't think there are many schools that interview without keeping spots (not just waitlist) open.
VT2013 11-10-2012, 05:59 PM This gives me hope. Thank you guys. I have a 27 with a 6 in Verbal so I was not too optimistic about MD schools. I have a 4.0 so that should count for something at the interview. My relatives live in Morgantown and one of the cousins goes to the undergrad college. Can someone comment on what might be my chances depending on personal experiences or anyone who is already accepted?

I will see you at the interview day then. It's good to meet people who are in the same boat. :)

I thought it said on the website that one must attain at least an 8 in every section on the mcat? Maybe that has changed?

That requirement is for EDP

You may get waitlisted being OOS, but I'd say after that a lot depends on your interview, LORs, and ECs. I know a few people in state who seemed like shoe-ins based on stats who got rejected or waitlisted this cycle because of lack of ECs and bad interviewing. Wow them and I think you have a chance. Numbers certainly aren't the only important thing at WVU, but be ready to answer why there's a discrepancy between your GPA and MCAT. Good luck! :)
Mailman2013 11-10-2012, 08:32 PM Accepted!
