School is not in NYC. It's in Long Island. You must a car to get around, you will not survive without one lol. But if you ever want to travel to the city you can take the LIRR (long island rail road). Excellent school, very challenging, great reputation--especially in the North East. Apartments are pricey... typically I have found that you will not find anything less than $500 (that's if you're sharing with 1 or 2 other people). Single studio/single apartments are anywhere from 900 and up. Sucks, but the area the school is in (and generally on Long Island) is very rich.

The school keeps getting harder to get into year after year. Average MCAT this year was around a 30, just heard. But they will release those stats sometime in the summer. EC's are very important...can make or break your application.

I would think most Interview invites would go out in October but the best way to tell is to go back into last years thread and see when for sure.

It's my top choice D.O. school hands down. I'm a little worried though because I took my MCAT June 21st and didn't feel too hot about it. Let's hope NYCOM will still show me a little love!

On the website, it says you can submit on July 1st. As for other schools, yes people have been receiving secondaries. So far I've received 7 out of my 12 secondaries.

My primary app has also been released for a while but only LECOM Erie has sent me an email, just to say that they received my app, didn't send a secondary. I have not heard back from any other school either.

Not much in the way of scholarships, fin aid dept does a decent enough job at making the loan process go smoothly... it is an expensive school (that is known going in) but in my opinion is worth the price.

Unfortunately the hefty tuition isnt balanced by a cheap cost of living... Long Island is notoriously expensive so rents aren't too cheap but you can ease the burden by having multiple room mates. I myself room with another second year and pay 1600 total.

The curriculum at NYCOM is a big winner in my opinion. It is a systems based approach (which i sought after in a school... to me it seems to be the msot intuitive approach). This means that all material in a given body system is covered at once... ie when you do neuro you learn about histology, pathology, etc. This is in contrast to other schools who may just have a single histology class where you look at cells from all of the body systems at once... thus by having a systems approach you begin learning pathology and MEDICINE in general in your first year, rather than waiting for second year to broach pathology and other more clinically relevant topics (this was a big plus for me).

Faculty is acccessible... there are some great teachers at NYCOM... loved the anatomy dept!

Overall the workload is manageable, the cirriculum is fantastic in my opinion, clubs/activities are there for you and you can elect to get as involved as you would like (pretty much every specialty has a club that you can join)

Weight lifting +1 (but I hate running haha), snowboarding, basketball, broadway theater, and theoretical astrophysics/cosmology :)

I just listed them and put a quick 1 line snippet about each, since it asks to describe. For example, after basketball I mention I've played the since 6 years old and in high school and the club team in college. For theoretical astrophysics I mentioned my interest in star formation and dark matter. Etc...

I called admissions today and they told me that they will start sending confirmation of apps at the middle of the august. Meanwhile, secondary app is available online @ https://guru.nyit.edu/Admissions/AdmissionsSuplementalApplication.aspx

On the website, it says I should submit my secondary after receiving confirmation from NYCOM that they have received my primary. Other DO schools have asked me to submit the secondary, so I know the AACOMA went through, but I have received no such e-mail from NYCOM. Should I submit the secondary anyway?

Representative told me that, " it is still early so we haven't looked at apps yet. However, if you are curious, you can fill out the secondary application online and submit it. we will confirm receipt at the end of the August."

So, sorry if this has already been answered, but are you all literally listing your experiences in the secondary or writing out a full description?

I had more then 4, I just listed the 2 science professors they asked for, a non science, and 1 DO,
But I will send them all of my letters.

Also, I know of people who got in last year without a DO letter...but they also had a 30 MCAT and 3.8 GPA...so I don't know

You should ask the school about this. It would be unfortunate for your application to be delayed because you relied on a post from a forum.

For the LOR, there is a slot specifically for a letter from a D.O. I'm just using my committee letter. Do they require a letter from a D.O. as well (my comm letter does not have a D.O. recc.)

This is what is was thinking however last years forum the first II did not go out until 10/6 and the majority of II until two weeks later.

So the "list" question...I just listed my experiences with dates, location (I've lived in several states) and position held. I figure that this is stuff already available on my initial application, so I'm not going crazy -- this is the down and dirty of what they need to make a decision in the 30 seconds it takes them to review my app at this point. Also, I just submitted it; I got a confirmation that my letters made it there, but nothing else. I didn't have a problem logging in so I figured just better to do so earlier than later...the worst they could do is send me a nastygram, which I don't foresee if they can't be trouble to send me an E-mail confirmation that they got my initial app in the first place...best of luck everyone...

Yeah it does suck. Considering I can only afford to hold one DO acceptance it isn't looking to good for NYCOM. I don't know maybe they can get an interview in under the wire...

THANK YOU! I had no idea about this! I had just been impatiently checking my email a bazillion times a day for this secondary. Some other schools also have their secondaries available but they recommend for you to get an invite before filling it out, so I assumed this was also the case for this school.

I talked to the director of admissions at length at a recruiting fair and she never mentioned any of this. When a school does something different than all the other schools you'd think they would at least publicize this information during recruiting fairs. At least I know how I'll be spending my Saturday now!

Sure the top one want all non paid experience you have. Such as volunteering in a clinic or a homeless shelter. All non paid work goes here.

The next one wants everything else such as clubs, activities you did for fun or any other note able activity.

It is that simple. School are different in how they titles things some schools want all work under work. Some have two areas one for paid work and one for non paid. Some just have work and ECs. Put it where you believe it best fits and trust that they will understand what you mean.

I am a little bit frustrated and wondering if anyone else had this problem. I read through the thread and did not see anything like this... I tried to do the secondary twice. The first time I entered my information and then hit "save and quit" when I returned to the application my information was all blank (volunteer, work, etc.). I reentered EVERYTHING, hit "save and continue" and it brought me back to the log in screen, where I logged in and once again everything I entered was gone. Kind of frustrated. i don't know if I should even bother trying to redo it at this point. Has anyone experienced this? Any advice? Please. I was so happy that it was completed (at least I thought it was). thanks.

No, I called the office yesterday and they said the email got sent to everyone, and to ignore it if you sent it in already.

II didn't go out yet to my knowledge. I called them last week...first interview invites in October. They interview in November, NOT IN DECEMBER, and then restart in January till they're full!

I grew up 5 minutes from the campus and went to school around there. It's in a reallllly nice area. 100% need a car to get around though and it's about a 40 min train ride into the city.

Yes it is a really nice and rich neighborhood and the city not far either.

This is really weird. I've gotten II from other schools (LECOM and WVSOM) but when I called NYCOM they said they haven't received my primary application? How is that the others schools have received it but they haven't? They also have my completed secondary. I really hope that this stupid thing with the primaries won't delay my II from them.

I sent in my secondary in beginning of september. But I forgot to send my LOR's until last week :eek:. Got the email an hour ago. And scheduled for an afternoon interview on Thursday Nov. 8th.

I never got an email saying I was complete for NYCOM. Submitted my secondary around Sept 19th. AACOMAS was sent out july 13th

I wouldn't worry, I've had friends of mine who are current NYCOM students receive ii's in march. The waiting game is just the nature of the beast.

I'm concerned because I have a really low MCAT. The rest of my app is strong, for whatever reason I thought that maybe the rest of my application would make me a desirable candidate :(

when you guys say complete, do you mean the secondary, or that's the date AACOM released your verified app to NYCOM?

Complete typically means when the school tells you that you're complete. NYCOM says in their initial email that you are complete when they process your secondary fee.

I know, but I noticed from previous years that NYCOM has sent ii in the past to people who have not yet submitted secondaries sometimes. Based on that, I think they start evaluating candidates from the moment the AACOM releases the verified app to them. I also read yesterday, in their website under Admissions/frequently asked questions, where they state that they have rolling admissions. So I am trying to get a sense for their timeline and if the ii that were sent out yesterday correspond to applications which had been submitted to NYCOM by AACOM in June/July...or the selection process is being random and not necessarily following first come first served order. My verified AACOM wasn't released to them until 9/6 and my secondary with completed email receipt was done 9/14, so if they are reviewing by AACOM release date, then I know I have some time still. I know that the secondary/completed date is not tightly followed for ii from past year threads, wanted to see if I can figure out this year processing :)

Nope....Im from WA state. But lived in NY for five years of my life, would love to go back!!! The DO i shadowed graduated from NYCOM and talks very highly of it. Should I sent a letter of interest?? Im pretty sure they do not know any of this.

Hey, I'm pretty familiar with the NYCOM admission process since the majority of my friends go there. From what I know, the secondary is simply the information they use on interview day and they offer interview invites based on your primary application stats and give preference to NYIT students. A lot of people either got interview invites before submitting a primary or before submitting letters of recommendation. Either way, it still means you should probably send anything that doesn't make you complete before interview day.

Ha, I'm from redneck Idaho(mean streets let me tell you!!). My mentor Dr. Jadick went to NYCOM and said it is a very systems based approach to learning. The cost of living is high but it can be offset with loans, scholarships, FASFA, etc. Secondaries are offered to everyone if they are unaware of this. just have to go to their website. To all of you remember, it's not a matter of if. It's a matter of when. Dreams are worth struggling for. They are worth fighting for. They are worth dusting your feet off and retrying. Good luck!

Hey guys. I don't know if this question was asked or not but I applied fairly early to NYCOM. I was done with my primary some time in june and done with the secondary some time in september. I have heard people have started getting interviews. Does that mean I have been screened out or it takes time for everyone to be invited? My gpa is a 3.52 and my mcat score is a 31O. What do you guys think? I am also a NY resident. Do you think I have a good chance of being accepted? NYCOM is my top choice for medical school.

I think her stats are solid for the school, and hopefully an II soon, anyone have any knowledge about NYCOMs interview process? or if these stats are within NYCOMs ranges? they seem to move a bit slow and especially with the amount of apps they receive plus with the hurricane, half the schools probably underwater...

Yea her stats will be fine. It will depend on her EC's, residency, personal statement, LORs, etc. and when she applied. I wouldn't count on hearing from them this week or next considering 90% of Long Island is without power. Could take 7-10 days to restore. I live in Manhattan and still have power luckily. The storm wreaked some havoc on this city and surrounding areas.

I wanted to know how to interview is like...and what type of questions do they like to ask...anything particular?

Well, my interview was a long time ago... Jan 11th 2011. I trolled my past posts and found what I wrote about it recently after it happened.
"First off, the day is situated ( morning interview that I had) where you arrive at 8:45 am to sign in. At 9 interviews start...I was the first to arrive and first to go, but they say that is not the way it works. There were ten people being interviewed and two interviewers..so that's five per interviewer. My guy was a PhD in anatomy and liked to talk. It was very conversation and laid back. His interviews ranged from 30 mins to an hour ( mine was 45 ish). The other guy interviewing was very short...like 5 mins short. I think he had a meeting to get to by 10. Once you interview you wait till everyones done and at 11 there is a PBL talk and then a finical aid talk. After which, there is lunch with the students and then a tour.

Okay...so the meat of the matter. Like I said my interviewer liked to talk. When I went into " his" office he proceeded to give me direction to a coin museum and talk about that. I mentioned in my secondary that one of my childhood hobbies was collecting old and foreign coins. He deff read my primary and secondary so I would suggest re-reading them and being able to talk about that. He actually pointed out a mistake on my secondary...which was not a mistake but i didn't argue. We talked about my shadowing experience and what I took away/ saw while doing it. Why was I confident I wanted to be a doctor? Yada, yada...don't remember many questions after that. Make sure you have questions for him/her..like pros and cons for each pathway offered. Student/mentor programs? Study abroad opportunities? Research availability based on pathway chosen?"

I was complete 9/14 and have not heard anything. I know they silently reject, I am starting to get pretty worried.

For this all I can say is the class of 2016 had 320 ish students on the first days of class. My class of 2015 was about 315 and we are down to 250-275

I completed a summer internship at the memorial sloan kettering cancer center and that is my only tie, however, I made sure to write about the experience since it's probably one of the best experiences most pre-meds can have.

3.4-3.5 cGPA/sGPA and 27 MCAT after submitting with a 24 MCAT in June. About a month ago, I submitted my new MCAT and have been waiting since. They said I am 'under review', but it's been about 3 weeks now.

Stats are very similar to mine except I am in state. there are quite a few out of state students, but are majority are from NY. Technically they are a private school and there should be no preference. I didn't get my invite for interview 'till mid Dec.

Just got my invite 2 days ago, I'm from CT! I was kind of surprised, they sent it before I submitted my secondary (i got mad when it deleted my info while submitting a month ago). Now I have to bust out the secondary tomorrow before scheduling :P

Do any current students have insight into where clinical sights and residents get matched? I'm hoping to do some training in NYC but have a feeling most of the clinical sights are in LI. Also, are there programs for international work?

Well, my interview was a long time ago... Jan 11th 2011. I trolled my past posts and found what I wrote about it recently after it happened.
"First off, the day is situated ( morning interview that I had) where you arrive at 8:45 am to sign in. At 9 interviews start...I was the first to arrive and first to go, but they say that is not the way it works. There were ten people being interviewed and two interviewers..so that's five per interviewer. My guy was a PhD in anatomy and liked to talk. It was very conversation and laid back. His interviews ranged from 30 mins to an hour ( mine was 45 ish). The other guy interviewing was very short...like 5 mins short. I think he had a meeting to get to by 10. Once you interview you wait till everyones done and at 11 there is a PBL talk and then a finical aid talk. After which, there is lunch with the students and then a tour.

Okay...so the meat of the matter. Like I said my interviewer liked to talk. When I went into " his" office he proceeded to give me direction to a coin museum and talk about that. I mentioned in my secondary that one of my childhood hobbies was collecting old and foreign coins. He deff read my primary and secondary so I would suggest re-reading them and being able to talk about that. He actually pointed out a mistake on my secondary...which was not a mistake but i didn't argue. We talked about my shadowing experience and what I took away/ saw while doing it. Why was I confident I wanted to be a doctor? Yada, yada...don't remember many questions after that. Make sure you have questions for him/her..like pros and cons for each pathway offered. Student/mentor programs? Study abroad opportunities? Research availability based on pathway chosen?"

I'm not sure how to do it or even if you can. I completed my application in Sept 2010. Long time ago for me. I did do though if I wanted to update them on new information like new shadowing or community service event post application is that I would write them a letter of update for them to add to my file. It also wouldn't hurt to mail a letter of interest if there is a quiet period expressing your continued desire to attend and love for the field etc.

Has anyone been given a straight answer as to when we will find out the decisions based on the first round of interviews? I interviewed 11/13 and anticipation is killing me! I heard 2-4 weeks via mail but that was multiple sources.

Also, what's the deal with thank you letters? Who do you send them to and what should they mention?

I have talked to my roomates and I might have over estimated with 250. I didn't mean to scare you guys. All four of us agree that 275 is a fair estimate of the people left in our class. I hate to be a realist, but there are going to be people that withdrawal from enrollment (10-15 percent) either due to medical reasons, life style choices, failing grades, etc. NYCOM is a very supportive school and they offer many services to ensure students succes here. Medical school isn't easy as I am sure everyone is aware of, but if you are committed and in it for the long haul then you will do fine. If any one has questions please do not hesitate to ask.

I think not only is the Thank You letter a must, it is expected. I would address it to: To Whom It May Concern or to the person that interviewed you . And I would thank them for the opportunity to talk about my desire to become educated in the filed of medics. Your continued interest in the school. Yada yada yada.

If by drop out you mean "failed and kicked out", then no not entirely, despite what some haters from Touro/RVU have enjoyed perpetuating on this forum in the past. Agreed with what peewee said.

I don't have the exact numbers for my class, but I know a decent amount of classmates that have needed to take leaves of absence (ie birth of a child), left for medical reasons, or just dropped out entirely for other personal reasons. Are there people that fail, sure, but I don't think they made up the large majority of the lost class size, at least for my year. Several have been allowed to repeat 1st/2nd year.

I think 2014 started somewhere in the 300+ range, and now its down to 280 something.

Yea I am in a similar situation with the deposits all coming down on me. I feel great that have these acceptances but I never thought about these additional costs going into this process.

Most likely they will do them all at the same time. I was 11/13 and was told about 4 weeks.

Just an update for those coming for future interviews or planing on send update letters. The school has officially changed its name yesterday at 3pm to "NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine" For better or worse...

I was under the impression that it went really well. The person who interviewed me seemed relatively impartial to my answers but at the same time indicated that I was going to get a good recommendation. How was yours??

Totally agree! Interviewed 11/14 and nothing yet. Although I did get a phone call yesterday from admissions requesting my transcripts from college...not sure what that was about. But I already put down my deposit for TOURO so I guess it no longer matters.

I agree,I can't believe it either. A lot of people at my interview had acceptances that required decisions by 12/15 so I imagine they are going to lose a good amount of acceptances by waiting this this long. I wonder if they may wait for the people who were delayed by Sandy to make their decisions, but still I just don't get it.

my LORs was send 2-3 days right before interviews...but i got ii like 1 month before..they told me to have everything in before interview ..so its possible to get ii before they get LORs....

Great! Thanks. I received an invite at another school without all my LORs already but I wasn't sure about this school. I shouldn't have any problems getting the letter turned in before interviews.

Does anyone know the COMLEX I and II pass rates? A student from my tour said it's 100% for PBL students and 90% for lecture students (COMLEX I). Is this true? I wish I'd asked someone from admissions but I forgot!

I was able to get in with a 26. My GPA was around 3.4, although Im not sure exactly what the break down of my GPA is.

Has anyone received an official rejection? I've been complete since September and haven't heard since, so I'm assuming I've been silently rejected :(

AHHH!!! I love this school so much but I still haven't received an interview invite. I was complete in October!
