I am very interested in VCOMCC. I plan on applying this cycle. I am a TN resident and had 3.5 GPA and 23 MCAT. I have over a year of experience (>2000 hrs) as an ER Scribe under my belt and I am about to start as a Medical Assistant at the largest Cardiology Clinic in the city. Any chance at getting in with that MCAT score?

Apply as early as possible. They report an average of 25 so you are not too far off.

Hey, I am an NC resident, so the virginia and south carolina campuses are about the same distance from me. I am just wondering what the carolinas campus has to offer that the virginia one does not, and vice versa. Other than location, are there any major differences?

The Blacksburg campus is obviously larger because it has had a lot more time to grow. Other then that, the curriculum is the same, rotation sites are the same, and students average statistics (GPA/MCAT) are the same.

Applying here- my absolute top choice school. Great faculty, great administration. I had the privilege of sitting in on a lecture day here, and I was really impressed with the quality of everything. Applying CC due to proximity, but Blacksburg was gorgeous too.

Hmm ok thanks for the info. I guess I'll make my decision based on location/environment

There's a separate thread on the next page for VCOM Carolinas. I thought CC stood for carolinas too but either was I'm pretty sure this thread is for the Virginia campus

Got an email June 26th that they received my primary and they will be reviewing apps in the next 2-3 wks.

Does anyone know when they send secondaries and if there are essays?

They do send a fairly lengthy secondary. I believe it has about 3-4 essays.

Hey all, I found this on another board. An individual who stated that they just finished third year wrote it. Thought I would share since it answers a lot of common questions.

Curriculum: First and second year curriculum is constantly being altered/improved by the administration. I highly doubt that the curriculum I experienced is the same as what the current 1st years experience, just as mine was different from my classmates who are interns now. Overall, there are some truly excellent, easy-going professors with great open-door policies. Biochem comes to mind. Pathology is taught almost exclusively through online cases in a sort of independent study fashion; it is the only course like this. I personally love that model, because the vast volume of Path material would have taken hours and hours in lecture; it should be noted that I am not a big lecture fan in general (I was a back-of-the-classroom sitter, usually working on a totally different topic). Attendance at lectures is "required" but never strictly enforced. Post-exam days, especially near the end of 2nd year when boards were looming, may have had 30-40% attendance. Overall, we all attended classes in high percentages because we are adults, and it is just polite.

The curriculum is systems-based and divided into 8 blocks over your 1st and 2nd year. I love the systems model; it makes sense to me and was one of the reasons I picked VCOM. For example, Block 4 might be Cardiology. You will cover all Path, Phys, Pharm, Anatomy, etc for the Cardiovascular system. You can make connections and associations in this system that help you retain information. Many schools now use a systems-based approach, and I think it is a big strength.

Tests during my pre-clinical years were almost every single week, if not multiple times a week. It seems psycho at first, but you get used to it. It does force you to stay on top of everything, but getting sick for a few days can also be a problem.

OMM is very good. There is one lab a week plus 1-2 lectures a week devoted solely to OMM. OMM lab also includes a lot of sports-med-related testing. Practicals are run of the mill. On rotations, we are usually the most equipped student on site. Topically, the lecturers cover everything you need to know for boards. They do not teach very much cranial, so bear that in mind if you want to pursue that in your career.

Anatomy is a true strength. Our anatomy lab is amazing, huge and super fancy. There are something like 20-30 cadavers per class, which breaks down into 6 students per donor. Lab groups of 6 are split into 2 periods, so you typically share with 2 other students at a time unless there is a huge dissection that requires the whole group. Most anatomy faculty are great. Practicals occur once or twice a block and encompass all anatomy for that system. They are timed and highly structured...and often curved a bit.

Block 8 is a board review block. I will cover that under the Board Review section below.

The curriculum is ok. Often, the material is not board-relevant, which is frustrating as you near the end of 2nd year. There are only 1 or 2 truly impossible lecturers who write completely ridiculous questions. The other several dozen are reasonably or totally fair. Tests are moderately good, with some being difficult and excellent (Peds and Ob were always written very well), and others with multiple typos or missing answers (some of the Clinical Case Correlates come to mind).

Location: Blacksburg, VA for pre-clinicals. All over the place in clincals (see Rotations). Blacksburg is awesome. It is the college town that houses VA Tech, and I loved living there. It is smaller, but not tiny. You are 30 minutes from Roanoke, which has some trendier restaurants and lounges. Charlottesville is about 3 hours away. Asheville, NC is about the same distance. Columbus, OH is 5 hours. There is lots of outdoorsy stuff to do. During pre-clinicals, you can use all of Va Tech's facilities, including the student center which has bowling, pool and such for next to nothing. You also have access to the gyms, and you are allowed to sign up for the various athletic classes like Yoga, Pilates, etc. It is a family friendly town with beautiful seasons and very minimal snow (usually 1-2 bad storms per winter). There are also several fun festivals each year, like Fork and Cork, as well as a Farmer's Market.

Cost: I'm currently avoiding my loan statements. I honestly don't know how much tuition is right now, but it is mid-to-high-30s + cost of living, which is 13-15K. I know that my estimate for total debt when I graduate was something like 225-235K. I had no undergrad debt, so that should about sum it up. It is middle of the road for DO schools and about on par with any other private med school.

Faculty: See above under Curriculum. 80% good. 10% amazing. 10% awful. I think that is pretty standard for any sort of education, be it college or grad school or professional school.

Reputation: I learned more about this once I got out on rotations, but we have a really good reputation, especially on sites where there are students from other schools (including rotating MD students). VCOM tends to have very friendly classes, and this is evidenced by our interactions with residents and attendings. Many of my classmates are often told how "nice and normal" they are, and almost all of us have been complimented on clinical knowledge that exceeds the attending's expectations. Our match lists are always very nice, and we have residents/alums in some truly amazing spots.

Clinical Rotations: I cannot stress this enough - rotations, regardless of school, are going to be what you make of them. In addition, quality is very site-specific. Think about your med school class. You have lots of pretty smart, pretty nice people; you also have that guy who is a total pervert and some people that might actually be psychopaths. Now imagine they are done with residency and are attendings, because that is who you have as attendings on rotations. Just remember that.

VCOM has core sites all over VA, NC and SC. We also have one or two single rotations in TN. You enter a lottery system in the spring of 2nd year for your site assignment. I am at a site where 9 or my 10 rotations are on site. We have 4 or 5 core sites like that. The other core sites have 3 rotations there, 2 somewhere nearby, 1 in another city, etc. Depending on your needs and your family situation, you can rank the sites to try to meet your needs. VCOM allows special consideration forms to be submitted too; considerations are definitely made for children in school, owning a home, a spouse with a local job and family illness.

Rotations here are like rotations anywhere. Some attendings are amazing and love teaching; you will be challenged and learn. Other attendings are sort of "over it" but won't give you any crap, so you just read on your own and don't cause trouble. I have had two awful attendings on my rotations - one that sexually harassed every female students (reported it), one that seemed upset at life and was amazingly hateful (to everyone, not just me). My classmates have usually had 1 crazy/nutty/hateful/perverted attending in their 10 rotations, which takes me back to my earlier comment about 10% of the people in a class being sort of peculiar.

My site specifics are not particularly relevant, because it may be different when ya'll are 3rd years. Needless to say, we have site reps to answer questions, and VCOM provides plenty of info to help you decide on rankings.

Housing: In Blacksburg, it is great. Loads of apartments and houses at every price point. Very easy to rent. On rotations, it is totally site-specific.

Study areas: At VCOM, there is a large quiet room in the library with outlets. I'm not sure how many spots there are, at least 40. There are also break out rooms upstairs that seat about 10 people. Many also study in the classroom. On rotations, it is site specific. Most hospitals have a medical library for students of varying quality - some like closets, some like conference rooms.

Social Scene: In Blacksburg, it is great. Many students would go out together after tests. Lots of little restaurants and coffee places. We did a lot of social studying too. On rotations, again, site specific. If social interaction is a priority, there are core sites for that.

Local Hospitals: Too many to discuss - http://www.vcom.vt.edu/clinical/hospitals.html

Board Prep: As noted above, Block 8 of 2nd year is board prep. My class was the 2nd class that had this (I'm Class of 2013). It is 50% faculty essentially regurgitating their earlier lectures (not very useful). The other 50% is Dr. Rizk presenting his board prep program (very, very, very good). He also offers Step I and Step II review classes at VCOM just after the academic year ends. He is AMAZING. His material is EXTREMELY high yield. He told us things we had never heard before, and then those things were on boards. The addition of this review (by Dr. Rizk) is a very good thing.

Other: There is a super cute little coffee shop on the 2nd floor that serves breakfast and lunch. They have legitimately good food. The admissions/student services staff are amazing and some of my favorite people. They are always welcoming. This includes, but is not limited to: Julie, Matt, Tyler, Bea and Mr. King. The administration actually walks around and talks to students. Student feedback is relevant and listened to, and VCOM started these review groups called QACs to help facilitate that communication (I ran one during 1st and 2nd year). There is also a massive involvement with medical missions, and the website covers that pretty well.

Summary: Yes, I would go here again. I've been occasionally frustrated, but mostly satisfied. There is a lot of support for students. People in the administration and front office truly care about student welfare, and frankly, that is a huge factor in success in medical school. Pick a school where you feel comfortable.

Hey guys
I tried to use the email's info to log in to the supplemental app for VCOM, but it wouldn't let me, it keeps saying that I entered the info incorrectly. The ID portion is just my email address that I used for AACOMAS app, including the @xx.com and the AACOMAS ID is already given, but do I include the "-2013" after the first numbers?

Sorry if anyone wasted their time reading this!!

But thank you to anyone who helps me figure this out!

How's the secondary look? Was sent a "we don't have your MCAT so no secondary for you" type of thing, despite my MCAT finally making it onto my app a week and a half ago. So I guess I have a bit of time before I officially get it but I'm trying to keep up with them and get all the DO ones done before MD sarts rolling in. Lengthy or the usual questions?

Dear XXX,

We are writing to follow-up with you regarding your application status at VCOM. Your AACOMAS application indicates that you are in the process of completing additional coursework this summer/fall 2012. Our committee conducted an initial review of your application and the committee determined they would prefer to wait to make a decision regarding your candidacy until they have the opportunity to review your grades from the summer/fall 2012 semester. Thus, your application has been placed on hold until we receive record of your grades.

Well just got another "you need to wait" email from them. Now that they have my MCAT they want to wait for my biochem class that I'm taking in the fall. Seems ridiculous that they want to wait for one class I'm taking to meet requirements at some schools and to just keep myself from being too distanced from the classroom for too long.

Has anyone else emailed them asking for this to be overlooked and just send a secondary? Knowing the results of this class will do absolutely nothing to change what anyone thinks of my application.

Off the top of my head cGPA 3.59, sGPA: 3.82, MCAT 28 with an abysmal freshman year. I've rocked all my bio classes including many upper levels that we will be taking in med school. I can't see this one class doing anything to change anyone thoughts on my application.

I'm assuming the email was automated, was just wondering if anyone else has had success bypassing it.

Is it just me or is this secondary quite extensive compared to other schools?

Also some of the questions are making me super paranoid... like about your community size and if you go to a DO/MD and stuff. I hope they don't count this against us... it's not my fault my parents chose to live in a suburban city and that the doctor I've had since birth is an MD!

Anyways I better to get to work on writing some essays....

Are the secondary prompts for the virginia campus the same as the carolina campus?

List/Describe any work or volunteer opportunities NOT on AACOMAS (this one is more of a fill in the blank one rather than an essay

-Osteopathic medicine parallels allopathic medicine but has principles and practices that are distinct. Which of these principles and practices are of greatest interest to you and why? (500 words)

-There are many problems facing healthcare in America today. Describe your interpretation of the status of healthcare in the United States today and those challenges the patients and physicians of tomorrow will face.(500 words)

-In the event you submitted an application to VCOM last year, what improvements have you made to your application? (500 words)

-If you have not completed all the prerequisite coursework, please state how you intend on completing it prior to matriculation. (500 words)

I am a Michigan resident and received my secondary at the begining of July... I have a an undergrad 3.6 sGPA, 3.4 cGPA, and a graduate (masters in biomed) GPA of 3.5 from Midwestern (CCOM) University..I think now my sGPA including undergrad and graduate work is 3.5.. I am waiting for my MCAT score to come in August 14.. I have 1200 hours of volunteering, 4500 clinical hours providing patient care from working, 200 shadowing hours..

Do you think as an OS student I would have a chance here?

I think you stand a pretty good chance. I (out of region too) asked around a little before I added VCOM and the general consensus was if your stats are good you have a good chance.

That is a lot of clinical hours, what did you do if you don't mind me asking?

I probably should have look around a bit more before asking and posting some of my stats but I figured this was easier..

I worked full time throughout undergrad as an Emergency Room Tech..

I just went to submit my application today, and it asked either for PayPal or a Check number... i typed in a check number but didn't pay anything. But it says I submitted my application. I'm confused... did this happen to anyone else? I didn't get any verification that I paid or am officially done with the application itself.

That check number is meant to be the actual number of the check that you would be mailing in. The only options to pay are Paypal or mailing in a check. I don't think they handle checking transactions online. You might want to call them on Monday and work that out.

Edit: Just a little late haha.

Oh my God this is the worst secondary I have ever seen.

I have heard that there are worse. OHSU is one that I know is bad, and others are complaining about U Arizona Tucson.

Compared to OHSU, these questions seem tame. These are about health care issues, OHSU wants you to open your soul and expose the soft parts so they can stab you with a rejection or a LOOOOOOONG hold period (usually until May).

Anyone from Cali going to this school? If you aren't from the area do you think you need to have stats that are well above the stated average on the website?

Basically I am asking if the regional bias makes it not worth applying to this school OOS with cGPA average, sGPA above average, MCAT below average in comparison to their 2015 class profile.

I think you have a good shot. With English not being your first language, it's a reasonable excuse. Plus your GPA and your ties to Virginia should really help that out A LOT (plus ur great science scores! ) Just my opinion though :o

I got the same email and called the office to see if it was a mistake. They said I was being put on hold until fall semester grades come in. My GPA's aren't nearly as good as yours and my MCAT is a point higher but same sort of boat. I was a bit stunned at being held pre-secondary to be honest, you would think they would take the $50 secondary fee at least. I wonder if the regional bias plays a role here.

Yeah this was one of my top schools, up there with the schools most of SDN considers the best DO schools. I can't imagine it's regional bias as they didn't give us a chance to fill out a secondary and explain ourselves better. I'm not sure what I will do about this school as they told me they are indeed going to wait for my biochem class and I may have an acceptance with deposit already payed for by then. Really disappointed with my situation here.

I might be in the same boat by then, and honestly I don't know if I will fill out their secondary if I got one later. Definitely disappointing because I like the school. Semester doesn't end until Dec 15th, and grades take another week, so basically it will be after Christmas until they will even consider sending me a secondary. They told me to just make sure I got A's and B's in my upper division sciences this semester (biochem here too, and physiology) and I should be fine, and not to worry because lots of people interview in the spring. But if I'm sitting on other acceptances with high deposits to hold my seat it wont be easy to just wait until March for an interview.

Sounds very familiar. They are waiting on my Biochem course for the fall...But I have other schools interested etc...While the school is only 30 minutes from me it would be hard to not accept other offers that are 'sure things'. In the end no matter which school you go to you will be practicing medicine...so I guess it is a good problem to have. :)

VCOM-VC is my top choice. I went to their spring open house and fell in love with the school. I submitted all my secondary and recommendations Aug 17th but they had a "glitch" with Interfolio and somehow never downloaded my recommendations until last week when I contacted them so my application was sent on for review later than it should have. Their fall open house is coming up Oct 20th. I can easily get to Blacksburg but I'm not sure if I should go again as its the same program. If I haven't heard from VCOM by early October would it be helpful to go again to the open house? Last time I had a 30 minute meeting with an admissions rep so I'm not sure if they frown upon people coming again. Any advice/suggestion would be helpful so I can begin to plan.

I have a similar history with ATSU SOMA in that they are near me and I have had the chance to really get exposed/interact with them a lot over the last few years. If I were you, I would just take a take a deep breath and let the process take its course. Waiting isn't any fun but there is still PLENTY of time for getting reviewed and offered an interview. They haven't sent out any yet this year! I doubt an open house will reap anything that you are looking for but take all this with a grain of salt, its just my personal opinion.

VCOM likes it when candidates stalk. I went to an open house at Blacksburg, an open house at Spartanburg (and brought about ten friends), and went to their DO for a Day program that they ran last spring. They're really about making sure they admit people who are interested in the school, and they will pull your application on the spot if you show up for an open house and mention that you applied (true story). That person ended up getting in, so I'm pretty sure they didn't mind.

Right?? I'm an early decisions applicant and still have not received an II. I talked to them last week and they said that they haven't sent out any offers yet. I was told in August that interviews for early decisions would be in mid-September. I'm starting to get a little worried because other schools have already accepted people!

Wow, that must be frustrating. I would think you should be hearing back from them soon considering you are ED but hopefully the rest of us do too.

I too talked with them earlier this week. It seemed like there was 1-2 interview dates for this month in order but if they are really planning on that I hope they get on it soon!
I'm from the western region of the States so I said i really liked their school but asked if there is any way (if i am granted an interview) to schedule it with my other trips out east in mind. I realize its a long shot but I really like VCOM, I just don't know if I can afford to make too many more cross country trips, especially with the cost of getting into Roanoke...
If they get on the ball soon and even more so if they get me in on one of these dates they'll win HUGE points in my book. Fingers crossed for us both

I really liked it. The students seemed to be really happy. I have a few friends that are students there now. They had posted their residency placements this year and it looked good, almost every specialty was represented--a lot of surgery. The campus is nice because it is really close to tech, and VCOM students are allowed to have access to all the same stuff as VT students. Feel free to PM me for any other questions.

I also lived in Alexandria Va for 2 years and this is probably my top schools I'm applying to. Just wondering do they take the latest or highest mcat, and does having ties to VA or do u have to be a resident? Finaly AACOMAS just released my app to them on 9/20...how long did it take for everyone else to get thier secondary and II on average?

I believe VCOM looks at both MCAT scores for the applicant. They probably will look at the breakdown of each test. I think being a resident is obviously favored, but I am sure that as long as you have some ties to VA that will help your application. For me it took 1 month before I was complete but that was because they were busy with their incoming class and orientation. Now they are moving much faster. It should be 1-2 weeks. It took me about 2 weeks before I was invited for an interview. This was my experience, but I think it may be different for each person depending on when you apply. I think you have a good chance, best of luck to you!

I actually lived in Alexandria VA for 2 years so im hoping those ties will help out and obviously having a 4.0 helps but I am just stressing out because of my late app and lower mcat 22, 26, 24...one thing that actually attracts me to this school is its focus on undeserved populations..i actually spent 2 years in ghana as a service missionary...anyways I just would absolutely love to come back to VA and go to this school but well see

I was regular admission. I didn't receive the e-mail yet. I was told we would be getting a letter in the mail as well as an e-mail. Perhaps sometime later in the week?

Wait, you said you interviewed tuesday? I interviewed Monday the 17th, so I am wondering if I did interview with you. I am really confused now about this... VCOM TELL ME MY STATUS SINCE I AM EARLY ACCEPTANCE!

Yes, I interviewed on Tuesday, I was a regular admission applicant. Just call the school and ask them what's up.

HA finally got my phone call today! Only to find out that they needed more information about my DO experiences. So now I have to send Mrs. Mills, an email stating my prior history with DOs and current situation with DOs (I work for a radiology company that has a couple DOs). It is a sucky situation to be in right now as they also removed me from the Early Acceptance, but atleast they are allowing me a chance to explain myself. I am just mad that I am not early acceptance now as this is my first choice and I was hoping that I would get in because I showed I wanted to be there. Now I am scrambling to shadow another DO. What do you all think of this predictament? Its very new to me. :(

Stay positive, man. Since you're no longer "Early Acceptance" you can now try your luck elsewhere, right? I never got off the waitlist last year and in August I was offered Early Acceptance for this coming year. At first I was frustrated that they couldn't just give me an automatic interview so I didn't have to withdraw all my applications from the other schools. Anyway, just be thankful for the opportunity they're giving you. Best of luck.

I am staying positive, but I thought early acceptance gives students a better opportunity at getting in. Now that I am not, I feel like my chances are worse. I interviewed, thought I did well, but we shall see. This lets me explain a bit more about myself. But if I don't get accepted now, this will suck!

I don't remember receiving that email from VCOM but I was verified on July 20 and then I received my secondary email Aug 7.

Hi everybody! I know I'm a lurker on SDN, but I just wanted to offer my help to anybody who was looking for some. I've loved this school and have been visiting it since I was just a junior in high school. I interviewed Sept. 17th as an early decision candidate and got an acceptance. If you have any questions at all about the application, the facilities, the interview, etc, I'd be more than happy to help! Just PM me and I'll answer your questions as well as I can.

Good luck to everybody applying to VCOM! :luck:

Sent in my secondary about a week ago and now i'm just waiting for an interview invite. I'm pretty sure i'll get one before I had done an early decisions track and was denied an early acceptance (b/c of ridiculously unfair reasons :/). But I have significantly improved my application.

Anyone going to the upcoming open house? VCOM is at the top of my list so I'd really like to go and make myself familiar to the admissions folks and faculty, but I live pretty far away. Has anyone gone to previous open houses? Are they worth going to? What sort of face time do you get with the people in admissions?

I went to the spring open house and found it extremely helpful. The staff and faculty were very accessible and the sessions were fairly laid back so you could ask questions. I had about a 30 minute interview where I talked an admissions person. They stay there until everyone who wants an interview has had one. The open house really helped make VCOM my top choice. I asked the admissions rep handling my file if she thought it would be helpful to come again for their fall open house and she highly recommended I come. Just a warning that the VA campus' is falling over Tech's parent's weekend so you will probably have to stay closer to Roanoke as all the hotels in Blacksburg and Christiansburg are sold out (as I found out last weekend when I tried to make a reservation).

Idk, they don't send out emails when you're complete or at least I didn't get one. I was verified Sept. 3rd, primary release Sept 6th. MCAT received Aug 28th. They must really not like me in the adcom office. I submitted my secondary on 8/17 and was complete on 8/31. I have not heard a peep from this school. I really liked the community service aspect that this school shows. I will admit, I am from the west coast, not from the service area for the school.

Oh well. I am on to other things now...

VCOM has strong regional bias, and favors high GPA over MCAT (they mention it on their site and they told me this in the interview), although I don't think that you are by any means not a good applicant. I think you are a strong applicant and you should still apply, but definitely apply to other DO schools as well, specifically the ones without regional bias and in MI. Good luck :)

So today I received my verification email from VCOM-VC informing me that they have received my application and will review it. I currently have a sGPA of 3.42 and a cGPA of 3.57 (undergrad and graduate degree classes included in that) and an MCAT of 25 P. Do I have a shot at getting accepted to this school, because it is at the top of my list so I am really hoping I can get in. I am also currently working as an ER Tech so I have a lot of experience working in a health care setting.

From the website: "A competitive MCAT score usually begins at 24; however, at VCOM the MCAT is weighed in connection with GPA and other personal qualities we see in each applicant. The overall GPA and the interview are considered of the most importance." I think this late in the cycle, your ER Tech experience will probably helpful in getting you a secondary app. Your MCAT score should be fine too. Just remember that they have a huge regional bias for the Appalachian states and people that want to practice in underserved/rural areas. Having those qualities are pretty important at VCOM I think.

Good luck!!

The interviewers (both faculty and staff) were extremely nice and the interview itself was very conversational and not too formal. It definitely helped keep the stress down. I fell into the trap of how easy-going they are the last time I interviewed here so I hope I didn't make the same mistake this time. Even as you're walking through the building, you'd bump into the medical students and they too are extremely nice and talkative. I'd love to go here.

I am disappointed with that score but it seems my GPA is at the average or a little above for some of the schools. I have over a year of shadowing a variety of physicians. I am currently working as a phlebotomist/lab tech at a private doctors office that sees 14,000 patients a year, so I am familiar with the medical setting and different insurance policies. I was also the scholarship chair of my fraternity and played a collegiate sport for 2 years. I just want to figure out my competitiveness to get an interview at VCOM.

Just got my call for an interview later in the month of November at VCOM. My GPA is on the low end as is my MCAT but I figured I would apply anyway since I have excellent clinical experience - working for 2+ years as an ED scribe and have been the manager of the site since my 90th day of employment, on top of shadowing multiple surgeries and an ENT - as well as some other things that may set me apart - journal article up for publication in JEM and co-authoring a scribe handbook. Don't put all of your stock in GPA and MCAT scores, especially with DO schools. Apparently they must have liked my "extras" and/or responses for the supplemental application otherwise they wouldn't waste their time with an interview since I'm below their average GPA and MCAT scores.

Lots of luck to everyone who is into the interview process and those thinking of applying, don't get too crazy about GPA/MCAT stuff, just be the best applicant you can be.

THe interviewers were extremely nice and I sort of got caught into how conversational the interview was. The first time I interviewed here, I'm pretty sure they got me off track and I didn't hit all of the points that I should've and answered the questions fully. I was much better prepared this time I think.

How exciting! If you're at the Virginia Campus I guess I will see you on the 14th! My first interview as well.
I hear its relaxed and conversational. You should have a friend ask you some questions in a mock interview session if it has been a while since you have interviewed for something - makes it less stressful at least for me. My BF is a 5th year surgery resident so I had him ask me some questions this morning. Make sure you are honest and don't just say what you think they want to hear - I do interviews for an ER scribe site as the manager for the last 2 years and everyone says they want to help people...and? Get a different spin on that reason. Also make sure you're aware of what DOs learn - I've heard some go to DO schools interviews and not really want to go DO and made an idiot of themselves when they were asked about OMM and osteopathic principals.

Lots of luck!

Well I originally submitted my primary in July. I called the other day to discuss why I did not receive a secondary. I am missing one 300 level course (apparently my micro was 200 level) anyway they had also not revisited my summer courses. My sGPA went up as well as my cGPA. So I surpassed the requirements and they sent me the secondary Friday afternoon. So with my special circumstances it was 4 months! I had almost given up! I have not gotten a complete email yet but I assume that will come today or tomorrow.

How long did it take from secondary submission for interview request?

Stats: 27Q, sGPA 3.28, cGPA 3.48

Applied last year, submitted secondary, and no interview. However, GPAs and MCAT have gone up significantly since last cycle.

VCOM is my first choice so any assistance is greatly appreciated!

Thanks

I think I got my invite 1 week after I submitted my secondary. I think I was complete around Sept 28th (I emailed them that day and they said I wasn't complete bc I didn't have my LORs but I had already sent it through interfolio) and I got a call on Oct. 9th for an II and I interviewed on Oct. 24th.

I just got my acceptance today and I am super, super excited!!

In terms of questions, the interview is very laid back and the interviewers (and everyone there) really do put you at ease. Be ready to explain any weaknesses in your application as you will probably be asked about them by one interviewer. And have questions, the interviewers I had created their questions based on what I asked them about and my interests outside of school. Otherwise look at the link posted earlier in this post...the questions there really helped me to prepare for the interview. Good luck!!!

If anyone has specific questions please ask. I would love to help. But BmoreHopeful is right, the interview is more of a conversation and laid-back. Everyone there is sooo nice. Asking about medical missions is always a plus b/c most of the faculty have some experience with that.

So today I received an email so I had been invited to complete the secondary application. However, the email didn't have a link or an application attached. What is odd though, is I received an email on 10/3 saying my application was put on hold due to summer/fall grades and that I should update them when my classes are finished.

I replied to the email asking about the secondary, but am I overlooking anything on their website, and is this possible too late to be submitting a secondary?

For some reason I also got the same email but I have already received the application complete email and interviewed on Wednesday. I emailed about what I could be deficient I since I already had the interview but didn't get a response yet. Hopefully they accidentally sent me that instead of the acceptance email. Haha. Wishful thinking but we'll see.

I called. I received it also and have been complete for a week. The admissions staff requested it be sent out. I would surmise it was sent to all. Not just those in need of a secondary.

Hey everyone, I am a long time lurker on this forum. Needless to say, VCOM is my number one choice and I was wondering if they send out interview invites all at once or over a period of time. I called the other day to check to see the status of my application and was informed that it was literally on the desk being reviewed. I have been trying to stay positive and patient but it is actually causing more of a distraction than I thought (trying to study for a re-take of the MCAT means that pretty much ANYTHING can distract me!)

My stats aren't really that strong from UG but my grad work is very strong. I am working on my MPH currently and already hold a masters degree. Unfortunately, my MCAT is really weak so I am anticipating the worst but am hopeful since I applied really early and was complete by the middle of August. Any input as to how the admissions office goes about offering interviews would be appreciated since I do not want to call again and am trying to limit the calls to about once a month (just to keep them posted as to my interest, but not too much that I become a nag).

Just got accepted this week after interviewing on Monday (was offered the interview Tuesday the week before via phone). VCOM-VC has been my top choice for months and I was getting interview invitations from all over the place but was hearing nothing from VCOM. The admissions office has had a lot of turnover this year and I think the staff is a little overwhelmed which accounts for some backlog. I emailed Whitney every 2-3 weeks and she would respond within 24 to 48 hours. They want people who want to be there so continue to contact them often to see what your status is. At their open house last month they said they are doing 2 interview groups/week now.

Ok anyone whose committee was supposed to meet last Thursday still not get an acceptance/rejection email/call? I'm of course going out of my mind and noticed that a few from my session already got accepted but I haven't heard either way.. Curious if they couldn't evaluate me yet because my evaluations weren't turned in that night, or if I am going to get that dreaded rejection email. I don't want to bother them just yet since I know how busy they must be so I was wondering if anyone else is in the same boat.

Anyone understand the process differently?

hello folks! quick question for all of you (especially those already students at VCOM): since the mission of VCOM is to increase the number of primary care physicians does that mean that VCOM can restrict your residency placement to only primary care? Because I was accepted to VCOM and love everything about the school; however my interests are in surgery. Let me know ur feedback !

Interview invite for 12/3! I wanted to see if anyone that has already interviewed had gotten any healthcare questions especially since the election? It seems interview questions are mainly focused on your individual application/involvements and stats at the moment rather than ethical-type questions from what i've read on this thread, or is this wrong?

There are 3 separate interviews at VCOM. I didn't receive any ethical questions except during the student interview and that wasn't concerning healthcare but concerned general things like with alcohol and peer pressure. The students have a list of questions and they have to choose like one of each type of pre-written questions and there are ethical issues in this list.

The professor interviews are about your background and are very conversational. Not sure if other people had this happen but I am pretty sure I was matched with my interviewers because of my background. We were able to talk about things that I hadn't been able to discuss at other schools because the interviewers weren't familiar with the field I am working in.

Hey everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has recently received a call for an interview offer. I spoke with the admissions office earlier this week and was told that my application is "in the pile" to be reviewed" and a final decision would be made shortly. However, I was also informed of this same information before Thanksgiving and would rather have a definitive answer regardless of the outcome (it is better than the indecision I am currently feeling at the moment).

I understand that my application is not as strong as other applicants number-wise, but I have a strong Graduate GPA (working on second masters degree) but have a weaker MCAT. I have extensive international experience. To say the least, this is my top top TOP choice and I would be honored if they gave me a shot at an interview. My MCAT is my weakest enemy at the moment. I am currently studying for a retake (even though I have been distracted by a lack of information regarding an interview vs. hold for MCAT).

I am sorry for the cathartic post, but mainly am wondering what the whole "final review" process is like and if this is just a way of politely saying that I am in an application hold status. Any information would be appreciated from current students and applicants in relieving some of my worries. I certainly did not expect this level of uncertainty when I applied this summer and knew that although my MCAT is weak, VCOM would be able to see through that and really get a sense of my passion for serving the most vulnerable populations of the world. Thanks in advance and I hope everyone has a great weekend!!

I'm with you on that front.... crickets over here but I am not giving up. It is discouraging but I have been at this for many years and I am not going to let this discourage me (even though with the passing months it gets significantly harder to concentrate on the present time of what I should be doing to improve TODAY and not let your mind wander to the future). It is hard to take the set backs especially when you really pour your heart into what you do and really want to show schools that you are not a "risk" but rather an asset. I certainly know that all I have done on this journey was not done in vain and has made me a better person through and through (just gotta keep up the faith and hope for that "one shot!")

Congrats to all who are getting interviews and got acceptances, I know you will all do awesome!!!!

Basically what happens is that you have 2 separate interviews in the morning by faculty members, each about 30 minutes long. Then after lunch, you will be interviewed by a student. I don't believe the student has your file, they basically have a paper with a bunch of different scenarios and ask you what you would do in each situation.

Hi everyone. I submitted my primary and was offered a secondary 11/17, about a month ago. I haven't actually done the secondary because I have completed one interview already, got accepted to that school, and have two other ii at the moment. Is it worth it for me to even complete the secondary now? I am still somewhat interested, mostly because of location and systems based curriculum. 3.1 sGPA 3.5 overall 28R and I would be OOS. Basically, should I spend the money for this secondary so late in the game? Thanks :)

Thanks!

It's been awhile since I was accepted but I'll answer your question and try and steal the thunder from leila5221 :D

(I've been to 4 now so the questions kind of mesh together)

The interview questions revolved around your applications. The big thing is why DO and why medicine. The student interviewer asks you scenario questions.

Hey everyone!! I wish you all the best of luck with your applications and interviews. I am currently a third year student at VCOM and would be happy to answer any questions you all may have. Please feel free to PM me anytime. Also, I didn't interview at VCOM till late March and ended up wait listed. I didn't get in for the class of 2013 but was offered early acceptance for 2014. So no matter where you apply never give up hope!

Hey, I do have a question that I haven't been able to ask a DO student. DO schools accept students who have lower stats because of the holistic approach. I was wondering, do you know any students who had low scores, struggle tremendously in medical school? Are your peers competitive? For instance, I compare myself to students who are far more brilliant than I to push myself, I was wondering if that's the case here. And how has third year been? Have you done your surgery rotations yet?

I honestly do not know of any students in my class who had low scores and struggled tremendously in medical school. Some may have struggled with an independent topic or section, but I do not know of anyone who globally struggled through the didactic years and on boards. As for competitiveness, I think you will competitive peers no matter where you go (DO vs. MD). Every class will always have gunners, and most people in med school are type A and naturally competitive, which will push you to do better.

My third year has been great so far. First, its just nice to be out seeing patients and nice sitting in a classroom. Our third year gives us a strong mix of a variety of rotations both inpatient and outpatient. I have not had surgery yet. My surgery is in about a month. Hope these answer your questions!

Yes it does! I can't wait to try surgery. Hopefully it won't make me sick haha

I interviewed yesterday and really loved it! Are there any current students that could message me and let me know what they think of the program? I have been accepted at another school earlier in the cycle and I'm trying to get an idea of what students think of it.

Ditto. Wednesday morning, I was sure I was going somewhere else. By the end of the day I wasn't so sure anymore. I really fell in love with VCOM that day.

Hey all,

I'm currently an MS-1 at the VA Campus. You can also feel free ask me any particular questions you have here and I'll do my best to answer them.

However, I will say that I was a Post-Bacc here, and so I didn't go through the usual application/interview process, but I can talk to my classmates who did and let you know what they say.

Congrats to all who have gotten acceptances! Will be glad to meet you in August! And to all who have yet to get the letter, keep your heads up and make sure the ADCOMs are informed of any updated grades, etc.

Interviewd on Wednesday and was really impressed with the facilities, curriculum, friendly staff/faculty/students, and the Blacksburg/Christiansburg area. VCOM just feels like the ideal place for my medical education. Hoping for good news sometime next week!

I sent in my updated transcript which should be updated on Tuesday. Was on hold pending my fall course. Think I should send an email to say that my grades are in
and reiterate my interest in VCOM? I don't want to seem pushy but I'm also not from the Appalachian region and don't want to be passed over because of it. I'm accepted to a good school but this was one of my top choices from the beginning and I would love a chance to get to see it and potentially matriculate here.

I see some other posters here accepted to the school I am and would love to be in the tough position they are of deciding between the two ;)

Sure, I would just shoot them an email saying that your updated grades are on the way, and that you are still very interested in the school. Unless you have been emailing them every other day, I don't think it would hurt.

I stayed at the Holiday Inn in Christansburg. Only $74 with the VCOM rate. It must be brand new because everything looked immaculate.

Hey danaling12 or NeuroSpeed I have more questions for ya :D

Do they give us stethoscopes or do we have to buy our own?

Are there any talks of providing us with laptops or tablets? I know we need a PC and have to get it ourselves but this would make things easier.

Do you take part in research at VCOM? Are there abundant research opportunities?

Hey,

Yes, you get stethoscopes with your initials on them at the white coat ceremony. They are Red, and aren't the fanciest. You will do fine with them throughout medical school. If you want something else nicer, you'll have to get them yourself.

As far as laptops, I haven't even heard a peep about providing us with either. The last few years they have had a deal with Dell and a handful of "recommended" laptops that came with all the microsoft office software, etc. Seemed expensive at first, but in the end probably not too terrible. I already had my own from just last year, so I'm going to take it as far as I can. You can use a MAC for your day-to-day with no problems, but they use the ExamSoft software, and they don't support Mac's at school last I checked. That might be changing though.

Research: I am kind-a-sorta involved in some research right now. I wouldn't say there are abundant opportunities at all, but the school is really pushing to get more. It comes down to you having the initiative to meet the professors and get involved.

Hope that helps.

Hey,

I had my secondary verification email last month. I have not received a phone call yet though .. Should I be afraid? VCOM is my first choice and I would love to get in. Any advice or is it just a waiting game now? Do I still have a chance of making it into Class of 2017?

Sorry, but I have no idea. If you have updated grades and such I would shoot admissions an Email telling them that you have updated your grades with AACOMAS and that the campus is your top choice. Otherwise I feel it's just a waiting game now.

Can you update your transcript in AACOMAS? I didn't think you could post-submission. I was under the impression that you had to update each school individually, i.e. send a transcript.

You send it to AACOMAS. From page 20 of the Instructions, found here (http://www.aacom.org/Documents/AACOMASInstructions.pdf):

"To update your Academic Record with new coursework, contact the registrar at the institution you are currently attending to request that an official transcript, showing the addition of the updated coursework, be forwarded to AACOMAS. All updated transcripts must be postmarked by April 1, 2013,*to be included in final processing."
