New Year, New Thread!!! Discuss Away!!!

I'm looking at adding this school to my AACOMAS and am I little surprised that I just now stumbled upon it. It seems great on paper. Especially with the early clinical experience and systems based approach. Would any current students be able to comment on what they think about the location and curriculum? I'm also curious about where they do clinicals and how that works. Anyone else looking at applying here?

I'm still on the waitlist (Not looking like I'm coming off either. Oh well, gap year's not bad. I'm using it for massage school, because why not?), but I can tell you that they're changing the curriculum this year. There used to be two paths, problem-based and lecture, and now there's just one, which is supposed to contain elements from both. I loved Lewisburg when I visited for interview. It's a small town, but they have a Walmart and a couple other big chains in addition to all the smaller businesses. OOS tuition SUCKS, but there is a possibility of a fellowship that pays tuition years 3-4 (well, 3-4-5, since it extends your education by a year), so I'm hoping to be able to go for that.

You should check out the last couple year's threads for more info.

My application just finished being verified last week. This school is my number one choice. The city is beautiful and the students all seem to really like the school. I know they pre-screen their secondary applications so I am crossing my fingers that I get one. Anybody have an idea of the earliest they send them out?

Judging by last year's thread, sometime in August.

MADNEMO

It looks like the year before that it was in July. I wonder what changed...Probably the number off applicants, I read on their website they got 3200 last years. That seems like a lot for a rural school.

doublefrick
06-23-2012, 09:39 PM
They get more like 5000.

MADNEMO
06-24-2012, 12:46 AM
Ya but only 3200 were complete according to Aacomas. Unless I'm reading it wrong. Which is entirely possible.

Gotcha. Is this including their 10% increase in apps this year? WVSOM is on the rise. I think their application structure (needing to complete a secondary only if chosen for an interview) appeals to many per-meds.

Interview here...it is a great school. Only downside is mandatory in-state third-year rotations. Make your fourth year count.

Most DO schools ARE rural, though. And it's an awesome school.

Well, I only looked at last year's thread, and there WERE July comments, but they all said decision deferred. Hm...guess the July interview/secondary invites just didn't post.

But, yay waitlist, I don't have to do this again! Also, hello doublefrick, I do believe we're in the same boat here, are we not?

Be careful with the HPSP because with $50k/yr for tuition, HPSP may not cover all of it. There is a cap they put on tuition which is dictated in your contract. I'm not sure what it is but that's what I heard from other HPSP forums. I would inquire with (a couple) of recruiters for your branch to verify what the cap is. I would read the other forums on HPSP info and if your not prior ROTC, look also into the Financial Aid Program (FAP) as well.

Sorry that was a tangent to this thread so if you have further questions, feel free to PM me.

Hey, thanks for the info. Yeahh I pretty much did all the research already. Coming from a military family I have a lot of connections, so the recruiter I spoke with said they'll cover the entire tuition no worries. Just need to get accepted, which is the hard part ha. Full tuition + signing bonus + 2k monthly stipend is fine with me :) plus I want to serve my country, so it all works out.

Their website says you can send in the LORs anytime you want, even before getting the interview invite, but it doesn't sound like it can help you get an interview by sending them early. Who knows...

They want a letter from a D.O. and a letter from a pre-med advisor, committee, or professor.

Thats what I thought at first but then I found this on the website. Which makes it sound like you get one before the secondary to check on the status of your documents.

Decision Deferred

"Decision Deferred" status indicates a hold status while your application is being reviewed and until a final decision is made, i.e. our office may wish to wait for fall grades or require updated MCAT scores before making a final decision. I just got an email as well. It was working and say's Decision Pending. However, my Applicant Checklist came up as a white page with the words "Failure to.....". Called the school and a nice lady told me that last year the pin number was 6 characters long and this year the applicants receive 8 characters long. So the IT guy will handle it.

Another thing, the admissions lady said that they just received the application and will take about another week before secondaries are sent out. Hopefully !:xf:

NOT interview decisions. Just deciding on secondaries... If you think about it and give it another week, then it will be about the 3rd or 4th week of July when they reach a decision. And when they are emailed out than it will be august. So like the old thread said " earliest secondary invites in august":xf:

not sure if this has already been said here, but Im pretty sure a secondary invite=and interview invite. Did you get their colorful email sent out yesterday? Or two days ago, I forget now...heres what they say:

Only those applicants who are selected for an interview will submit a supplemental application and fee! The required forms will be available on your status page after an interview invitation is sent to you by e-mail.

The first wave of secondary invites is supposedly coming out at the end of this week. So no, no one has received a secondary yet. The reason it takes longer is because a secondary invite = interview invite, so they're screening our primaries hardcore.

Due to a hiccup with my transcript on my primary, none of my stuff went in until late August, so I can't offer any personal input here. However, looking at last year's thread, the pattern seems to be the same. Most people were deferred in July, and then started receiving secondaries/interview invites in August.

So do not panic! There is hope. ^_^

My guess is that since you don't get a secondary until you're already selected for an interview this serves as an additional data-mining device as to further separate candidates for prospective interviews (and thus, secondaries).

Thats what I thought at first but then I found this on the website. Which makes it sound like you get one before the secondary to check on the status of your documents.

https://my.wvsom.edu/Applicants/Applications/Appcheckstatus/index.cfm

not necessarily. I received a pin number and login info but the email itself states no secondary unless invited to interview. so....i don't really understand the need for providing login information prematurely.

As per what we saw in the last year forum, apparently everyone got deferred in July. Also, some of the guys deferred had incredible stats and it just wouldn't make sense to be deferred. So I would go with the assumption. Unless you want to call up and ask.

But if you are going to defer everyone anyway, then why bother telling them? If they aren't going to make a decision about interviews until a little later in the cycle then there is no reason to tell the applicants at all that they are being deferred. Seems like an unnecessary step to me....

This happens due to automatic emails sent from their systems. They rank everyone and put them on hold. Then when the time comes they start picking from that group. This is also a common thing in other schools. But all do not have automated emails. Again, we are all very early. Good luck to everyone.

So I'm assuming that's not deferred. What zee heck. For what it's worth, my stats are relatively low (2.9 sGPA, 3.33 nonsci, 3.11 cGPA) and my MCAT was a 23Q. Taking the new one tomorrow to go beast mode honey badger status and hopefully er, NOT get a 23.

As you may know WVSOM traditionally carries their alternates over from the previous year. I am an alternate for this year. If I don't get accepted this year I am automatically accepted for next. But they have to wait to see if any spots open up for this year. First day of class is Aug 6. So they have until then to accept any alternates for this year. I would be surprised to see much movement on the new applications until after then. Last I heard there were around 75 alternates and I have heard of only a few that have gotten in or dropped off the list. They are probably waiting to see how many spots they will need to fill for next year before they start making any big decisions.

I submitted my app and got verified around the middle of June, with my app getting released to the schools on June 24. I am OOS as well from VA (border state maybe?)

As far as my stats, electrical engineering major with 3.7 sGPA, 3.3 cGPA, 27R. I did take some time off after college and went to work for the government for 1 year and am currently taking a year off to volunteer in Australia on the wards and in Aboriginal Health.

Not to creep or anything, but I wouldn't fret about this too much. My status was "decision pending" from the start as well and my stats are anything but spectacular (3.33 non sci, 2.9 science, 3.11 overall, 23Q MCAT). I'm not sure how much URM (Hispanic) may have to do with it, or being a nontrad (Drama major), but surely, this can't be solely based on numbers because mine kinda blow. Perhaps this decision deferred phenomena is a pre-req issue?

This says the averages are B:8.8 P:8 V:8.3 (Total of 25.1) W:N and GPA 3.57. I'm not sure what year the stats are from.

Hmm - I'd heard it was about 27 MCAT with about that GPA - 3.6. Attitude is a huge factor in getting in - they are looking for folks that will be compassionate, service-minded physicians, with ENOUGH academic credentials to indicate that they will probably be successful.

They admit a lot of people with MCAT's in the 30's and quite a bit in the 20's as well.

Regarding curriculum the previous posters weren't exactly correct. Up till 2014 (my class) the incoming students could pick either problem -based (independent/group study) or lecture curriculum. We had only lecture-based but the 2nd year PBL's continued in their track. Some that failed joined our second year. Seemed to be a problem because they often lacked some of the thorough background we had gotten in first year.

Our curriculum incorporated parts of the PBL learning: we had group learning activities with case studies which turned out to be really great learning resources.

The new curriculum for the first years (which they started designing in 2013) goes live with this incoming class and is "case-based learning" based on most recent educational research regarding what is the most effective way to educate med students. The school tends to respond well and quickly to student feedback ((I was on the curriculum committee as a student rep), and improve anything that has kinks in it. Wouldn't worry too much --excellent, excellent professors in the main.

Here is some great information from Kate429 a current WVSOM student regarding interviews:

However, what historically happens (according to one of the professors on the admissions committee that I was talking with Friday), is that anyone they ask to interview they are pretty interested in. If all 10 students interviewing one day do well in their interviews (no red flags), they might accept most or all of them. They have rolling admissions. So anyone interviewing later in the cycle (after December) is more likely to be waitlisted because they may already have acceptances filling the available spaces.

Congrats to everyone today and just be yourself come interview (they like you :-))

From WVSOM Admission FAQ:

My decision status shows as "decision deferred"- what does this mean?

The "decision deferred" status indicates a hold status. While your application is being reviewed and until a final decision is made the Admissions Committee will periodically review files which were initially deferred. For example, your application may be placed on hold ("decision deferred") because we are awaiting official MCAT scores or fall grades. Any changes in your status will be communicated by e-mail.

OOS friendly but about 50k a year. Third year is done throughout the state. Ranked by U.S News as a top school for rural medicine ( and I think primary care). That's all I have at the top of my head that I've gathered from here or their website. The location is supposed to be pretty decent.

Hey dudeliness. WVSOM is very desirable school. You can check the previous years WVSOM thread for some student options.

Pros: If you want to be primary care, this is the school for you. You get excellent early patient contact. As a WVSOM student in your first year you can see patients by yourself in the on campus primary care clinic. So right away you can apply what you learn to patients with real life problems. Before this you have a physician that you will shadow who will teach you how to take history and interact with patients. There is also a strong alumni with this school, which will help greatly with residency. The tuition for this school might be higher than some, but lots included with that. You get a laptop with all the programs you need. Almost all your books are online, thus you have less cost for books than other schools. In addition to this, they are really with the times. They have all the high end technology with robotics (which they are currently expanding). The give you free access to up-to-date, awesome library resources, train you in electronic patient records, etc. They started a great new curriculum last year that has a lot of PBL learning mixed in. So they are really about integrating what you learn to everyday practice. If you have a wife and kids, this small town has a lot to offer. Also, there is lots of great rotation sites available in WV. They also have a community rotation program that allows you to see how a lot of the specialties are like in a community rural setting (if that is for you).

Cons: There are some, but it just depends on your perspective.

Sorry for the disorganization. Hope this helps. You can always check their website; very resourceful.

I interviewed last Feb. I was an alternate for class of 2016. They didn't have much movement this year from students dropping out after accepting. This school has a great program. I really like that it is all about the students. It is only a Medical School so you are not competing with dental, pharmacy or anyone else. The staffs main focus is the students. Some of the other schools it seemed like the staff was about the research and didn't care about the students. I wanted to go east coast being from the Rockies. So this school seemed like a perfect fit. My stats are above the school average. I also have 7 1/2 years’ experience with patient care, 5 1/2yrs in a trauma center emergency room full time.

People with both statuses have been getting invites so I dont think there is much behind the deferred vs. pending. I got an invite and I'm from the midwest, plus other people from around the country have been getting invites so its definitely not just a WV or Appalachian thing. Its still really early for them so don't get discouraged yet. good luck.

Have any of you had trouble contacting the admissions office? I've called three times and sent an email with no answer. Guess I'll keep trying.

Basically I just switched my residency from PA to WV. I have a valid WV license and voter's registration and I pay WV taxes now. I submitted my primary as a PA resident though so I don't know if now I would be considered instate or not. I know WVU has a complex process of being declared a resident, but I'm not sure about WVSOM. Anyone have any idea? Thanks!

Yeah, there is a way to challenge it, but it would take a lot of work and requires me to work in WV for a year, which I'm doing so if I decide to go here I'll challenge it, but for the time being I'll just shell out the extra $40

You may want to check flights into airports that are farther away than Roanoke or Blacksburg. I have LMU the next day and it's much cheaper for me to fly to Knoxville and drive over.

I'm only 24 so car rentals are ridiculous for me. I've knocked it down to 600 and that's not too bad

I was never deferred, only decision pending from the start. I was verified July 16th so.... meh?
GOD DAMN I JUST WANT INTO THIS SCHOOL.

ah, losing it.

One thing that's highly stressed here is professionalism. I'd really be more careful about my language if I were you.

Oh, most definitely. What's said here poses little to no consequence. However, what is deemed appropriate in anonymity is a direct reflection of character. My point is, it's never too early to begin professional practices, in all aspects of one's life. With that said, I wish everyone here the best of luck. WVSOM is a wonderful school and a great environment for developing into the best physician you can be.

I found this in last years thread and thought it was appropriate to post in this thread as well. KNOW!

I'm about to graduate from WVSOM. The major
problem I have with WVSOM, and probably most medical schools is the cost of
out-of-state tuition. You cannot become resident of WV when you are a student.
You are forced to pay this ridiculous tuition the entire time. I question,
everyday, why I should pay 45 grand or more a year when the only contact I have
with WVSOM is through my SWC (state-wide-campus) administrators, during my
clinical years (3 and 4), which is minimal. I don't believe the education I get
is worth the expense. Sure, WVSOM is listed by US. NEWS at # 12 for primary
care, however they fail to mention it is listed as #5 for medical schools that
lead to the highest debt (http://www.usnews.com/education/best...d-to-most-debt (http://www.usnews.com/education/best-graduate-schools/articles/2011/04/14/10-medical-schools-that-lead-to-most-debt)). This
is a national trend as well with student debt recently surpassing credit card
debt nation-wide. I'm upset about this, this is a high burden, and when I took
the tour of WVSOM, they argue "well you're going to be a doctor so you can
afford it." They also mentioned "no one has defaulted on their loans yet" That's
an absurd argument and I should of taken it as a warning sign! You will be a
slave to your debt for several years. This trend cannot continue, and I expect a
large economic backlash in the future, similar to the 2008 recession. Same thing
for medicine as a whole.

I should also mention that WVSOM was #8 for
primary care when I first attended, and has fallen to 12. Looking at the match
list in my class (2012), it's obvious that people aren't as interested in
primary care as they used to be, when comparing present to past match lists. I
have looked at them the past 4 years, and there are more specialties matched
every year. WVSOM's mission is to increase rural physicians in primary care,
they are doing the opposite with their high debt loads. This provides a higher
incentive to pursue a specialty which guarantees a higher income. And usually
that will require an out of state residency. I'm near furious about this
situation. I should of seen it coming, but how can you truly know what you want
to do in life until you actually are doing it for a sustained period of time?
Shadowing a doctor doesn't give you the same understanding as being a doctor. I
was initially naive but I am fully aware now.

Honestly, I love my class,
and there are great people at WVSOM working for the students, on a beautiful
campus, but this is overshadowed by the financial burdens that follow
graduation. WVSOM may not be a for profit school, but they sure seem to behave
that way, always erecting new buildings and installing these ridiculously
expensive robots, that we hardly use, and barely get any sort of educational
value out of. They use these as a key selling point for WVSOM. It's purely to
entice new applicants. You may learn how to intubate, or run an ACLS code but
you forget it all by the time you enter your rotations and have to re-certify
anyways. I don't think WVSOM prepares you too well for your 3rd and 4th year
rotations. I think the students prepare themselves adequately, and nearly
autonomously. With the mandatory stay in WV for your 3rd year requirements, it
hurts your chances of establishing your candidacy for residency at your hospital
of choice, which likely wont be in West Virginia, due to lack of residency
programs in the state.

I think WVSOM is only reasonable for students who
are already WV residents, would like to stay close to home, but are without a
doubt, 100% sure they want to pursue primary care in West Virginia. This is
somewhat paradoxical as you cannot be 100% sure until you are out there doing
rotations, experiencing the job itself. Most of us have no idea what specialty
we want to pursue when we go into medical school. We figure that out in our 3rd,
and often 4th year. Honestly I think a lot of us chose WVSOM because we didn't
get accepted elsewhere, or because the facilities are nice. I was accepted to a
few other schools LECOM, TEMPLE in PA, I should of stayed there, but I was
enticed by the facilities and was initially pursuing a Navy scholarship ( I did
4 years prior). The facilities are nice but this really only matters in the
short, short term. My advice to prospective students is take WVSOM's mission
very seriously, as they reduce your chances of going anywhere else but WV.
Retake the MCAT, get a better score, go to someplace you'd like to end up in
life. Feel like you have to go somewhere THIS year? take the year off, get a
job, do some research, or something to boost your application, devote a solid 2
months to the MCAT, doing practice questions and go somewhere else. You've got
plenty of time. WVSOM will typically accept a lower MCAT, but don't use this to
get your foot in the door to becoming a doctor, sure that will work, but it will
be much easier if you just retake the MCAT, and wait it out. Unless you want to
stay in WV, and do primary care, as their mission states. Dont make the same
mistake I did! Many of us thought, "well we'll get the degree and go somewhere
else afterwards," This works, and many many of us did just that, but it's more
difficult when you're forced to stay in WV your entire 3rd year (minus your few
electives) I mean all of this from my heart, and I hope it helps. If you're
already going there, you'll be fine, but if you're a prospective student, think
carefully.

Seems like most educational institutions just take advantage
of people's hopes and dreams to make a dollar these days. This kind of crap is
only driving up the cost of healthcare

I got my decision deferred email today, a little late compared to those people who got theirs in July. How long did it take for some of the deferrals to receive interviews? Has anyone been rejected yet?

So what’s the general census?

Everyone that got the invites had decision pending as opposed to decision deferred?

Does everyone that got an invite live in WV?

Just wanted some perspective on my situation and whether I should be getting discouraged yet?

I was always decision pending and am applying from Nevada.

For those of you getting interview invites how long was it from when you got the status check email to the interview call? I got the email last thursday and my portal says decision pending so...

I received the email with all of my login information on 7/12 and got the official interview invite email on 8/15 although it was visible to me through the portal a few days before that.

+1. Just want clarification on them being systems based during year one but organ systems bases year two. I thought those were the same thing?

Dudeliness: they have a student handbook on their website the has a list of rotation sites and regions you can end up in it. I know it won't help regarding the quality of site but it could give you an idea of where you might end up?

Thanks. That will be helpful. I wonder if they have any rotation sites where you can stay for all the core rotations in one place?

Hey Selttiks288 I am a first year and you are correct in the idea that systems based is the same thing as organ systems based. It has been a real adventure this year for the new curriculum but it has been a lot of fun too. It is really nice to have systems based because you only have one major class at a time like right now we are in our Foundations of Osteopathic Medicine course which is really a welcome to medical school slap in the face, lets get everyone to the same level class. It has everything from biochem to anatomy to how to interact with a patient. Once this class is over in about three weeks we move into the integument system and then after that on to other systems. To answer the rest of the thread previous the the one quoted above the area is awesome and this school really makes you feel like family. Sure it is expensive but not significantly more expensive than the other schools. Is is true that primary care is a major focus? Yes. But that does not peg hole you into that type of medicine. This is a great school and we look forward to welcoming next years class into our family.

Checked my portal and I got an interview invite for 9/12! Anyone know of any good places to stay for a small amount of money?

Are you coming from the Greenbrier airport? I'm from the West coast, and trying to figure out the most affordable option :)

When I talked to Annette last week, I believe they interviewed twice as many as those who get accepted. So 50%. Probably higher since you all are first round candidates.

IIRC, it's between 50-60%, but earlier interviews don't necessarily have a higher rate of acceptance.

Fly into Roanoke and take a car. Unless you want to spend $500 extra...Greenbrier airport will not handle commercial jets.

I received the original email stating WV had received my primary on July 25th
I got an interview Invite on 8/29 for 10/8.

I actually have never logged into the portal as of this writing. So I have no clue if I was ever pending or deferred. I'm applying from RI so not local, although I did grow up in Maryland so I don't know if they take that into consideration like how on the AMCAS they ask not only where you live but where you grew up.

I had the same status, so I called. They said that it's probably because my application was missing something. It turned out that a couple of days later they emailed me about what else I needed to include. I would call them and ask, they are so sweet on the phone and I'm sure they will at least let you know what it means for your case. Chin up!

II a few weeks ago for 9/26. Weird question for current WVSOM students: what do you guys do for food? I have insanely fast metabolism, and eat constantly when I'm studying (~5 meals per day), so it's very important to me. Do most of you do all of your own cooking? There doesn't seem to be a cafe or food court on campus with available meal plans.

If it helps anyone, I was decision deferred a while back and received an interview invite. But unfortunately, I am going to have to withdraw my application. Hopefully that frees up a spot for someone here.
