Does anyone know the policy about sending thank you letters? Does anyone actually read them and does it influence your ranking at all?

I wrote and sent them; HOWEVER, I found out later and also told before I wrote them that they're really not necessary. People are too busy to read them and they have little if no bearing on the final ranking of your application. I know numerous staff who will just throw them away.
