Graduating from OSU-Stillwater in May with a major in physiology and a minor in psychology

I'm completely wide open as far as future medical interests go, but surgery is really appealing to me right now, if I do primary care, pediatrics is heads and tails above anything else right now.

I am so pumped about attending OSU-COM next year and can't wait to meet you guys and gals

One of my friends stacy has been accepted and will be attending, but I think we'll have to wait for the December round of interviews to commence before the new wave of acceptees come through.

Whew... After sweating since November, I'm in. It was awesome to stop looking for that FedEx truck and it suddenly pull up completely catching me off guard. I interviewed with the Halloween bunch (w/_456, I think?).

I'm Kyle Wooderson, BS Journalism 99' from OSU, Postbac at OU now. I'm 27 and married with a baby boy on the way. I live in Norman, but am originally from Blackwell in Northern OK.

I'm interested in rural medicine. Probably family, maybe surgery.

I can't wait to meet you all. My wife and I are so excited about this weight (wait, ha!) being lifted. I was so worried about getting in after the career change.

p.s. I have an OSU sweater vest I got from my grandpa (like, that he used to wear, it's awful), that I gave to my college roomate as a wedding gift (long story, has to do with a football game and a bloody nose :confused: , I'll share later). He just gave it back to me as a baby gift. What a coincidence.

I'm in! My first acceptance. Originally from Enid, OK, but now I'm in San Diego, CA. I'm looking forward to seeing all of you if I ultimately decide to go to OSU.:)

You need fenrezz (he lives at Westport) or someone else to ask about apartments. I've been out of them for too long. Actually, you should also call student affairs and talk to the two student ambassador coordinators. They each live in different apartment complexes.

I just visited OSU-COM last weekend, and took some good pictures with my new digital camera, and got some good stuff from the bookstore.

I'm coming back up in February to look at apartments, hopefully as close to the campus as possible.

i've said it once, and i'll say it again. stay away from westport. :)

i've heard too many horror stories about that place from classmates to ever recommend it to incoming MS1's. and with the school being so close to the interstate, you can really live almost anywhere and still have under a 15 minute commute. if walking to school is your #1, #2, and #3 priority, then by all means check it out. otherwise, go find a nice place that your money will go a bit further at and enjoy a nicer apartment with safer conditions.

oh-- and congrats-- you won;t be disappointed :)

Absolutely. There are many options along Riverside and elsewhere. That's part of why I recommend talking to the student ambassador coordinators. They both live on the south end of Riverside & have minimal commutes. :D

Try looking in Jenks. It isn't a bad commute at all and much of the town has cheaper housing than brookside/midtown.

I do most of my studying at school, but there's quite a mix of who studies where. Right now, I study at home early in the morning (4 or 5), stay at school until around 7 pm, then go home to see the family.

as for housing, brookside is going to be expensive... another good area is the TU area, more house for the buck.... or your could go to 51st to 61st and riverside to peoria area.... they are okay areas...

I used to be a real estate agent, in the day, so I also would suggest getting in touch with a good realtor specializing in midtown... and let it be known how much you have to spend.... then look... it is a way to start none the less

Anymore, the only really scary part is along 61 between Riverside & Peoria. You don't have to go much north of that to get to decent neighborhoods. I drive through this area regularly getting to my daughter's school.

She is right!, down toward riverside between 61st and 51st there are good homes with a relative level of safety.... The school itself is not in the greatest part of town... I am an original west sider and I would not live in the same area OSU is in...

I moved from Tulsa last year, but have lived there for 25 years. I would definately stay away from the high crime area at 61st & Peoria. I definately wouldn't feel good about my wife and son in this area after sundown.

If you have no public school issues, look for a home on the west side. They don't appreciate as fast, but the $/SF is lower. Midtown is great if you don't mind older homes, but typically $100/SF and up. Get ready for less SF.

If schools are an issue, the best for the west side is Jenks. Top notch, but has some snotty wealthy kids. Then again, you will find that in any of the top public school districts. My son went to Union most of his life, and it was great. You can find good deals in the northern Union district at $70/SF for nice places in good neighborhoods.

Most suburbs would not be more than 20-30 mins in worst case traffic.

Oh, I would not spend a lot of time on the Riverside trails at night. Some bad things have happened there, albeit infrequently.

Best deal on great food: any Zio's & El Chico (esp. 21st next to I-44).

I'll think about names of complexes & get back to you. If you really want cheap, ask Dana about the mental health housing. Sounds odd, but a number of OSUCOM students live there....for $25 a month!!!! Bare bones, but cheap. I could get you in touch with a classmate who lives there if you want.

Ask her about AHEC housing. They are very nice, brand new townhomes East of school. They are trying to get some med students in there to create a more heterogenous community, but the rent is scaled based on income (of which you will have none)

Well, those of us who have had a differing opinion also live in Tulsa and have for many years (I've been here 22, myself). Not a big deal, really. We're allowed to disagree. :D (and in actuality we're splitting hairs since we're all acknowledging there is a bad area...just disputing how far away you need to get.)



Some other good places to consider are Jenks, Sapulpa, Glenpool, and Sand Springs. They all have some inexpensive housing & aren't a bad commute to school. IMO: Broken Arrow, Bixby, and Owasso have some commuting/traffic issues, although I know people driving it every day.

BA commute, right off the turnpike anywhere from 20-25 minutes. All highway.

Im speaking specifically of my commute. I live about as far away as one can be and still be in BA. But, I also live right off the highway. So, it evens out.

I was talking with some non-premed friends the other day about med school, internship year, residency and so forth. A question arose that couldn't answer. I have done a site-wide search and didn't find anything. I also looked at OSU-COM's site and couldn't find the answer, so here goes.

Is there a stipend during the internship year?

What if you are doing something like the specialty track IM residency that combines the internship and residency?

I couldn't find anything on the OSU-COM site that stated anything about a stipend for PGY-1. Thanks in advance. I am sure this is common knowledge, so I apologize for my ignorance.

Yes, PGY1 includes a stipend. I went looking also, & you're right about htere not being any information on the website. I don't know why there isn't, but I have talked to interns.

Also, I agree that BA is going to be less expensive than midtown Tulsa. Where to live depends completely on what you want/need. If you're looking for an apartment, I don't see any reason why you'd need to go that far out (no need for more than a 15 minute commute). If you're wanting a house, school district, etc then it all changes.

The wife and I went browsing Tulsa yesterday. It seems like there are plenty of homes for sale in the TU and Midtown areas. They are mostly small two beds.

We own a 3bed/2bath house (built 1986) now that we will try to sell for about 90K in Norman. Where are those kind of houses in Tulsa?

Also, we checked out Sapulpa and Sand Springs. SS was very confusing and we had trouble finding where most of the housing was. It didn't seem as close as it looked on the map.

Sapulpa seemed livable, but I really want to experience Tulsa and not just be a commuter.

We're going to look at Jenks and some other parts of Tulsa on the next visit. Her Gma used to live at 31st and Mingo and sold her house for ~90K. Seems like there would be some 3beds there? Anyone know what that area is like?

I'm afraid that I'm not familiar with East Tulsa. :( sorry. I do know there is some affordable housing there.

Hello. I haven't posted on here yet, so I thought I would put my two-sense in on the housing. I live off Riverside right north of 61st St. in a very safe neighborhood. Aside from my neighborhood, I wouldn't live anywhere near here. I am between 61st and 56th(which cuts through from Riverside to Peoria). Even some of the houses on the north side of 56th aren't the greatest little things in the world. As for you BUmedic, if you are wanting to save money, like DrMom said, the $25/month places are not too bad from what I hear.

TALK TO DANA AND ASK HER ABOUT THE OCHEC HOUSING.

I talked to some of the students at OSU, they said that every summer they try to take one, last year they went to Honduras, funny thing was, I was there about a month earlier on a Scuba vacation.

That's awesome. Missions are part of my plan as well. I was hoping that there was a group that did this sort of thing. When do they go? Summer MSI, MSII? What else have you heard about details?

Just an FYI: your "summer" of MS2 is only 3 weeks long and is right after board exams.

I know they go every summer, it is funded by one of the clubs, but there is some out of pocket expense. One thing is for sure, I would get a passport now, I heard it is kind of a lengthy process now. I plan on hitting up my church for some funding when I go, they are really good people. As for which summer, I think it is of preference to you. I don't think there is a rule on going more than one time.


We can find out all the details on the sixth, but how cool would this be? Dr Mom, speaking of cheap coffee, when we were in Honduras, we rented a car and drove around the country for three days, and went inland to Copan to see the ruins. WOW, NOW THATS COFFEE,,, had the shakes for hours after the first cup////lol

It will be the Saturday after orientation week, right before classes start.

How did you ask your church? I would have a hard time doing that because it seems like every year someone is going somewhere (ie people are always asking for money for mission trips).

I just asked the assistant pastor, and he seemed very enthusiastic..... Come to find out that his wife works for a company that organizes medical missions. Of course by my stupid mistake, I can not remember the name of the company, but he said that it was across from the praying hands at ORU. I know what you mean, I was not sure how he would respond to it, but it went better than I thought. I asked for medical supplies, and he said that they may be able to help with the cost of the trip also.... wow, that was cool,,,,,,,

We will see........ Have I told you that I CAN'T WAIT!!!!

After some thinking, I think instead of asking in front of the church, I'm going to set up a website with my story and call to missions. It will be a low pressure sell. I know there are people that feel led to support missions like this. I just wouldn't want anyone to regret helping.

Jonathan goes to Honduras every year as far as I know. He is the one who set everything up. I would anticipate it being a regular trip as long as he is going to school here (he graduates in 2006), but hopefully someone will carry on the tradition once we get students going regularly.

Chimi's worked well last year. They let us reserve for a pretty large group.

I don't know of any classes with shirts, but many shirts get sold as fundraisers. You might want to hold off in case your class wants to make one for that reason. :)

What's up boys....(I say boys b/c i've yet to see a female acceptee on here) but yeah, I was hoping to get into this whole hang out/get to know eachother event planning that seems to be going on. If you all pick a time and place, i would be most humbled and honored to attend:) Also, I too went to ASD and had a blast, saw xray again, which was great...even my mom commented on how nice and personable you seemed (just by observation). Oh and kwooder, my dad also mentioned that you both had a wonderful conversation in the restroom:P He didn't mention it until after the day was over, or else I would have loved to have met you and your wife. The ASD was great.... I was trying to pass the word around to come to this site and post messages.... I was hoping we could be able to recruite more people into the system........ Well, I wonder if anyone new is listening.....HINT HINT>>>> My wife was realy impressed with everyone, I think she finally got a scope on the intensity of the schooling. She laughed at me before the meeting when I told her that I would be at school from 7am to 9-10pm every day of the week except Sunday..... Now she is a believer..... She was also thrilled to see that other people had kids and she coudl be involved in the clubs and organizations.....
OK< OK Here is another idea for school also.....Since there are a few of us that are here in BA (barring we don't buy a house closer) how about setting up a car pool thing.... its cheaper, environmentally friendly, and most importantly will force me to be on time,,,,lol

I've been looking at pdas and laptops. What do you guys use or are planning on getting?

Don't get a PDA yet. The school is trying to get a grant for all of the med students to get PDAs. You don't need one during 1st year at all & they're expecting to have word on this grant next November.

As to a laptop, most here don't bring one to school, but I do. Right now I have a Toshiba Satellite. I haven't had any problems with it.

Don't get me wrong...I love my PDA & use it often as a second year. I just don't want you guys to go out and buy something when you may very well be getting one for free. Also, only a couple of models will be compatible with the school's system, so you don't want to get the "wrong" kind.

Yeah, let me know what you find. I think I want to to get a mac though. I've worked pretty extensively on a Sony Viao for 2 years and I've had problems with it from the get go.

Any current students know of any mac issues at OSUCOM?

I worked in an office with pcs and macs and have never seen the mac leave you hanging (the pc of course is another story).

One of my classmates brings his mac laptop to class occasionally. I've never heard him mention any problems...and he does hook into the inter/intranet here.

I got my Compaq Presario 2100 a couple of years for grad school, it was a life saver, I don't know about how many papers you have to write, but it sure helped then.

As for a PDA, I see all the residence and interns here at the hospital running around with them, but I think I will wait until second year.

I have always wanted to try a Mac, but never had the money or the guts to switch...

You rarely have any written assignments. I use my laptop to take notes in class, make study sheets, browse the internet, etc. I also have a bunch of music on it to listen to while studying. :)

Actually, DrMom uses her laptop to play around on SDN forums all day during every class......

(I've actually observed this on a few occasions)

salvation army superstore at 21st and sheridan has furniture if you're not too picky. snow's has some used stuff as well.

Yeah, I am trying to get all the work done to the house before school starts..... It really wasn't too bad, but then agian, I am use to laying Spanish tile roofs, carrying cement all the way across the place, laying 16lb tiles. So the shingles were not to bad....Plus the weather was perfect....

No, no no.....

You don't have to get a chicken pox titer or vaccination, as long as you know the approximate date you had the chicken pox. Then all you do, is make sure the physician or nurse at the location you are getting your shot records from makes a notation of this.

I sent in all my vaccines and physical stuff in late December, and they accepted it, with just a month and year written in.

I believe that they will.

What would be the benefit for getting additional degrees, such as MPH, MS, MBA, etc? For example, what positions would you be qualified for with these degrees that you could otherwise not be?

All depends on what you want to do

MBA: can run a clinic/hospital, some docs get one just to have some business knowledge

MPH: interest in public health (health of populations, rather than individuals), epidemiology, preventive medicine, occupational medicine, administration/policy (which is what the combined OSU-OUHSC program will be, I believe)

If a masters or PhD fit into what you want to do, then great, if not I don't see a reason to spend more time in school. :D

(Keep in mind, I started med school with an MPH & an extra healthcare quality certification ;))

I know that OSUdoc08 can give you info, but I recommend that you also talk to Dana. :D

Contact the Tulsa Housing Authority for a list of approved apartments. These apartments will allow reduced rates depending on your financial status. Dana didn't know about the apartment I'm staying at, and I had to tell her about it, so I would go directly to the THA. Their website is www.tulsahousing.org .

You can't deal with them until you have your financial aid package back to prove that you are fully relying on government aid (i.e. loans to cover all expenses.)

Nah. The package you get from OSU. Dana said I should expect mine in mid-March, but my FAFSA SAR was recieved the first week of January.

I have already turned everything in, and Dana told me not to worry about anything else until May. So, I do not think there is a big hurry if you already have your fafsa in.

I have already submitted my fasfa in Jan and I am trying to find housing in Tulsa for June. So I guess I should be getting that Fincial Aid Package soon.

Hey, sorry that I disappeared for a while. I have been in the process of buying a house. I found one around 15th and Harvard. I can't wait to move to Tulsa. I assume the dinner(s) are still on for later this month and next. I'll try to keep in better contact. I still haven't ran into anyone around OKC that will be in our class, but the pre-med advisors said that there are quite a few accepted from OU.

You dont actually get "section 8 housing." You get a regular apartment, then get the Housing Authority to approve a reduced rate for the apartment, as if it were section 8. There are only for certain complexes, and you must have your financial aid package to show the housing authority as proof.

This is according to Dana. She isn't very good about email, but she is good about phone calls.

I was taking a patient into the ER at the Texas Osteopathic Hospital in Ft. Worth, which is part of TCOM. I overheard an MS-4 taking my patient mention to her classmate that she is moving to Tulsa in August. I told her that I was moving there the same time she was. She is starting her 5-year OB/GYN residency at Tulsa Regional, so I'll probably run into her again during my rotations. She said she wanted to go to Tulsa because it is the largest Osteopathic hospital in the U.S. I've never been told this, but it's a good fact to know.

Well, see everyone on Easter weekend.

Shoot, I live in Tulsa and did not know that....I worked at TRMC for a couple of months, Please, oh, Please do not get your hopes set too high. As for xray, and the other depts that I frequently went to, everything was a little bit, how do you say,,,,,"older". Yes, that is a good term without offense, "older". It does have some fairly new stuff in the ER, but as for radiology, and surgery,,,,,, wow..... I'll give it that though, it is a bigger hospital. It is nothing like St. Francis, 1100 plus beds, not including the surrounding facilities, but about the same size as Hillcrest,,, approx..500 beds. I believe it is larger than Hillcrest, but this is the normal operating capacity. Columbia use to own both Hillcrest and TRMC. When Columbia began to break up, TRMC was thought to be shutting down. It was left running in limbo for a couple of years, with Hillcrest either buying it or running it,,,not quit sure, before OSU stepped in. OSU has only had it for a couple of years, even though that is where most of their students went for rotations...

TRMC, while old, has some good medicine within its walls. TRMC will never be shut down, primarily because the other hospitals in town won't let it-- reason being that TRMC sucks up a TON of indigent care, and if TRMC goes, guess who gets those patients then? Yes, TRMC is St. Francis', St. John's, Hillcrest's and Southcrest's best friend.

Also, the scuttlebutt around the hospital is that Hillcrest, the current owner of TRMC, is looking to free up some cash. TRMC is actually a fairly financially secure hosptital, and i heard (though i haven't seen any numbers to back it up) that one year it was the only hospital in the Hillcrest system to turn a profit. Once you see the numbers of patients that goes through there, it's not too hard to believe. They recently renovated/remodeled a floor for cardiac patients-- pretty sweet setup. Anyway, rumors have it that Integris and maybe Omni (not sure about Omni, but Integris for sure) are looking to purchase TRMC from Hillcrest. Needless to say, the residents and staff are excited about it, because 1) Integris runs a nice hospital and 2) Hillcrest abuses the sh*t outta the IM folks.

The newest thing that I heard at work was that Hillcrest is being bid on..... some group is trying to buy the hospital and all of its subsids. Yes, TRMC is the dumping ground of the Tulsa area, and is really the only place in town where these pts. can get decent treatment....TRMC where the ER becomes the family practice for those with out insurance.... Yes, it is finacially stable now, because of their huge volume of pts. w/o ins, they have both state and federal funding....

We get lots of significant pathology in that ED.

Hey guys and girls,

I guess I'm the new OSU guy in town (although I was accepted in November). I'd like to attend the get-together, but alas, I go to school in OH, so I won't be able to make it. I will, however, be able to make the dinners this summer, since I'll be home on May 19th. Anyways, thanks for the invite, and I look forward to meeting you all.

Well I got my white coat fitted this weekend. They apparently want you to go to the bookstore to get it done, but haven't actually told anyone, so stop by and do it when you are around there. Get it bigger than you think, because you will have alot of stuff in your pockets and sometimes wear bulky clothes underneath.

You definitely want it a little bit big. I actually have 2 different sizes so that I have a regular one and another that fits over sweaters. (Don't get a second one yet...you don't need it until rotations).

If you can't get into the bookstore, you should be able to call in your size. Check with student affairs.

Background: In my lab, most of us have been accepted to med school. So there is a lot of chatter about such things.

This is the conversation I overheard that reminded me once again why I'll be a D.O.

Girl 1: "What specialty do you want to go into?"
Girl 2: "I think infectious disease or women's health, something like that. I just can't see my self being..."
Girl 1: "A regular family doctor?"
Girl 2: "Yeah"
Girl 1: "I mean, why even go to med school?"

Makes me angry, but it's reality. It's also funny how when everyone is waiting to get in, you feel connected, but once people get accepted at out of state schools, their attitude comes back.

Unfortunately, I was unable to come to admitted student day, and have only met 3 of my classmates so far.

I only found out about the date a week before, and have a full-time job in a different state, so it was impossible to do.

For some reason I get my mail late sometimes---it seems to be unreliable at times.

Our second Admitted Student Day is coming up in June. Please note the
previously scheduled Friday, June 11th date may be rescheduled to a
Saturday date. You will be receiving official announcements with the final
scheduled date for this event very soon.

Now is the time to place your white coat order. Please contact Debra in
Matthews' Book Store on the OSU-CHS campus to give her your size
information. If possible, stop by the bookstore to try on a coat before
ordering (you are welcome to do this at the next scheduled Admitted Student
Day on June 5th). Debra can be reached by phone at (918) 699-8670 or by
e-mail at osucom@mattmccoy.com . Note: Your full legal name (first and
last) will be printed on your white coat. No nicknames can be used.
However, if you want to go by your middle name, your first initial and
middle name can be substituted on your white coat.

Financial aid packets were mailed to all admitted students today. If you
have not received your packet by next week, or if you have any questions
regarding financial aid, please contact Sandra Hale in the Office of
Financial Aid at (918) 561-8277.

Don't forget to submit all required admissions materials by July 15th.
They are:

A complete and final set of transcripts from all universities attended
(sent directly from the institution, signed and sealed by the university
registrar). AACOMAS does not forward your transcripts to us.

Medical history, physical examination, and immunization forms signed by
your physician. Physicals and immunizations must be completed prior to
matriculation. This service will not be available through the OSU Health
Care Clinic. If you have any questions regarding these forms, please
contact Cindy Joice, OSU Clinic Nurse Manager,at (918) 561-8376.

Proof of health and hospitalization insurance. Please use the guidelines
provided on the information sheet in your offer packet.

Important Dates to Remember:

Deadline to submit required admissions materials - Thursday, July 15th

Orientation begins - Monday, August 16th

White Coat Ceremony - Saturday, August 21st

Classes begin - Monday, August 23rd

The weekend of the Accepted Student's Day would make sense. Dr Corey already suggested that weekend, and you can guarantee many will be in town. It is also the next time I will be in town.

It's official....the next Admitted Student Day is scheduled for Saturday,
June 5th.

All admitted students are invited to attend with one guest. Approximate
time for the event is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the OSU-CHS campus, with
lunch included. Invitations will be sent out in the next few weeks.

Upon suggestion from students who previously attended, we have restructured
the event. June's Admitted Student Day will be less regimented and will
offer a better opportunity for you to meet and interact with your fellow
classmates. Along with providing important information about your
