jrmason_21,

I wanted to congratulate you on your acceptance to PCSOM!! I know how excited you are to get the wonderful news. I found out in December. I really liked the school when I visited it for my interview. I am very happy for you. Good work. Feel free PM me at any time. I would like to get in touch with my classmates in an attempt to get to know everyone.

Talk with you soon!

Aaron,

Thanks. I'm still coming down from getting accepted. I don't think everything has sunk in yet.

Aaron Earles
01-27-2004, 01:05 PM
I know what you mean. I was stunned when Dr. Strosnider called me. It has not sunk in yet for me either. Now I just have to find a place to live and a way to pay for it. hahaa.. Anyway, keep in touch. Talk with you soon.

Willie B

Aaron,

I know about the phone call. I had to look at the caller id to make sure that I had heard right. We shouldn't have any problems being able to pay for it though. Tuition is only about 26000 and they will let you borrow about 38500 from Stafford. Just out of curiosity, how long after you received "the call" did it take for the letter to reach you? We live about the same area so I figure that it should take my letter about as long:) .

Willie B

p.s. Do you think that we should move this into the Osteopathic forum?

Aaron Earles
01-28-2004, 04:23 AM
Willie B,

I interviewed on December 6, got my call from Dr. Strosnider on December 10, and received my letter in the mail on December 12. That is pretty funny about how you screened your call. I was in such shock, I started to doubt myself and wondered if he told me that I was not accepted. ha ha ha

Where do you live? I am in Huntington, WV. I dont see a problem paying for it either. I dont know that I will be eligible for the entire 38,500 in federal subsidized and unsubsidized stafford loans. I made a buget for myself based on what I thought it would cost to attend meds school per year with other expenses such as apartment, utilities, etc. My figure was around 45,000. That seems kinda low to me. The apartments that I have looked at in Pikeville are quite expensive.

We probably should move this to the Osteopathic forum. I will have to contact the mods and see if they could do that for me. BTW, where are you thinking about living in Pikevegas? My first choice as of right now is probably Ridge Cliff apartments. But, I have not looked at the Anthony yet. Anyhow, keep in touch. Talk with you soon.

Aaron,

For some reason Dr. Strosnider didn't call me at home:confused: . He called me on my cell phone and left a message on my voicemail. I don't know where I will be living at right now. Also, I live just outside of Ashland, KY.

Willie B

Aaron Earles
01-28-2004, 02:48 PM
Yeah, he called me on my cell phone as well. I was at work. I like the Ashland area, will be going through the area in a few mintues acutually on my way to Columbus. Talk with you a little later.

I'm so glad to see that Aaron and I finally have some classmates! I can't wait to meet you all. Congratulations on being accepted! I know what you mean about not believing you have been accepted. Sometimes I still can't believe it! We're finally going to be docs! I hope that we can all keep in touch before school starts. It would be great to get to know each other ahead of time. Congrats again!

First.... Welcome and Congratulations lolablue:clap:   .

I can't wait to meet all of you guys. Mistyblue, I think that is a good idea. I think that it will just make orientation that much easier and fun. The only problem is that we may be sitting right next to each other at orientation and not even realize it:wow: . I say orientation, because I'm sure that we will get to know each other very well in the upcoming years:laugh:.

I also think that once we get to orientation, we need to let some of our fellow classmates know about this website. It truly is a good way to find out information about the medical profession.

Congratulations lolablue!!! It is good to meet you. I am excited about PCSOM. The closer to August it gets, the more excited I get. I cant wait to meet you all.

Have you guys already received your financial aid packets from Teresa Jones yet. If not, you should be getting them very, very soon.

Have you guys decided what company you are going to get loans from? Such as Nowloans, Northstar, Accessgroup? I am having some trouble deciding on how much to ask for. I would much rather get too much and give it back than to not get enough.

Mistyblue.... I miss you...your classes must have you very busy. I cant wait to hear from you again. Everyone, take care and talk with you soon.

Willie B,

Don't worry about the financial aid stuff yet. I just got my about 10 days ago. It took them a little more than a month to send me that package once I was accepted. I would imagine that you will get it within the next week or so.

Are you still on cloud nine?! I am really happy for you. Med school will be a rewarding experience. Talk to you later.

Acutally, I'm about cloud five right now;). Although, I have gotten up a few mornings this week and wondered whether it has been a dream or not. This usually goes away when I walk into the living room and see the balloons that the people I work with got me. I've also began to trying to find a few of my friends that have graduated med school and started residency (just to get the opinion/advice on the next four years). Unfortunately, they went to U of L and not Pikeville. Their experience won't be quite the same as our will be though. Good news is that I've found one of them that is a resident at one of our clinical sites:). So he should be able to tell me some info on that site. That is if I can get him on the phone/ internet.

yeah don't worry Willie B - I haven't gotten my financial aid packet yet either! I am on cloud 9! I had gotten in the habit of saying "...if I get in then blah blah..." and now I catch myself and I think gosh I am really going to med school! I can't wait to meet you guys ...hossofadoc I think you know me ;) (hint I am a bio major at uk!)

Lolablue,

Don't worry about not receiving the financial aid packet yet. Mine was mailed during the third week of January, and Teresa Jones told us that she would not even have the packets ready until January. You should get yours very soon. I am glad that you are still on cloud nine! Cant wait to meet you and the rest of our classmates. Talk to you later.

Aaron,

Saturday was horrible. The electricity/ heat went out in my house and I about froze my a** off. Sunday was better though. I'm on vacation from work for this entire week, so it shoudln't be that bad:D . I finally got my FAFSA and Tax returns done today. So, I should be finding out how much I'm going in debt next year;) .

I also can't wait to meet all of you. Only 6.5 months left until school start.

Willie B,

Glad that you got your tax returns completed. I am still waiting to get my completed. I am almost finished with my FAFSA forms. Since you live in Ashland, you and I should meet up sometime to become aquainted. Htown is only about 35 minutes away, maybe I could come to Ashland sometime and we can meet. Maybe I can get Misty to meet up with us too. I am not sure where the other guys are located, but it would be kinda neat. Talk with you soon.

Sorry I haven't been able to talk with you lately Aaron, but my classes have been keeping me very busy. I'm also trying to get my FAFSA and the other forms PCSOM sent us completed as soon as possible. I think the idea of us all getting together to meet sometime before school starts would be great if we can all work out a time for us to get together. I can't wait to meet all of you!

Hey Misty, I know that you are busy with classes. I hope that all is well. I have some info about some of the apartments in Pikevegas. If you are interested in what I have, you are more than welcome to it.

Willie B, I work at Cabell Huntington Hospital, but I am not full time currently. If you would decide that you would like to meet, we will do it according to your schedule, since I am flexible.

Just let me know what you would like to do and what time would be best for both of you. See you both soon.

Aaron,

We can probably work something out. I think that Misty wants to come too, but I can't comment on her schedule. I generally have atleast one weekday off from work, along with every other weekend. By the way, what shift do you work. I work second shift, so that usually interferes with alot of things that people want to do:( .

Willie B

Aaron Earles
02-02-2004, 08:45 PM
Willie B,

I work the day shift, but I dont work every day and often have at least two days off a week. I am flexible, so whatever is best for you. I am usually off on Tuesdays and Thursdays, along with every weekend. Misty has class on Tues and Thurs but I dont know her time schedule. She would also like to attend. If I needed to, i could probably take off any other day. I will work around your schedules. Looking forward to meeting you.

Oh, I wouldnt be able to meet on Saturday, March 6. My little bro is getting married on that day, other than that, I am free!

See you soon,

Aaron

Hey guys and gals, just a little welcome from the Undergraduate American Academy of Osteopathy here at PCSOM. It's our job to make sure your PCSOM OPP experience is the best it can be given the lack of faculty at the school (although you can't get any better than Dr. Stiles).

If you have any questions or need a good 'ol Osteopathic adjustment, just let me know!

I believe my old apt is still available. Contact Allen Justice at Justice Supply (it's a hardware store in the phonebook) and ask about a 2 bedroom at the bypass apartments. Tell him Scott the medstudent sent ya!

It was a pretty nice place; large and reasonable (400/month). It's one mile from the school and sits right on the edge of town. The neighbors aren't that bad although there is a 17 year old girl next door who has some fun when her dad is gone, but she's not that loud. No one ever bothered me there though, so that a good thing. If you have anymore questions, just ask!

DOSouthPaw,

I was wondering, do all the students at PCSOM automatically become a member of UAAO or is it the students choice. Sounds like a pretty cool organization. Any info that you would have, I would love to hear it, tht is if you are not too busy with classes. Talk with you soon.

Willie B,

The apartment search has been so so. I have information for about 3 or 4 apartment complexes in Pikeville. DOSouthPaw gave me another contact to try out. If I were to get an apartment today, I would probably go with Ridge Cliff apartments. They are kinda pricey, but they look pretty nice. I would like to live in the same area as other students so we could be available for each other if necessary. Anyhow, I am thinking about going to Pikeville again this Saturday to look around some more.

Whenever you would like to meet up just let me know. I will see if Misty would be able to meet as well. Take care Willie B.

The UAAO is the undergraduate component of the American Academy of Osteopathy (www.academyofosteopathy.org). The chapter at PCSOM is voluntary and costs 40 dollars to join. That covers you for 4 years or 5 years if you elect to take an undergraduate fellowship between your 2nd and 3rd year in osteopathic medschool. Our chapter has a website at www.uaao.net but soemtimes it is quirky for off campus users. The PCIT dept. can't figure out why so we are in the process of moving it to an off campus server so everyone can enjoy it! If you have anymore questions, feel free to ask! Take it easy y'all.

Aaron,

Good luck this Saturday with the apartment search. I hope you find what ya lookin' for. I know I should really start looking but I'm still waiting on the budget info from the school, so I know what price range to look for. Oh, I also received the receipt for my deposit yesterday. Guess PCSOM actually got my check:D .

To Current PCSOM Students,

I was going over the financial aid package that Teresa Jones sent us to complete. I have a question. I know that tuition is about $26,000 per year. I also know that the max amount of money that you can get from the government per year is 38,500. My question is how much should we borrow from private loan companies, or how much money do you need per year at Pikeville? If any of you could give me a rough amount, I would really appreciate it. Feel free to PM me if you would prefer that.

Some people don't know what to do with the extra cash... Walmart or the movies? :D

But, really it's up to the individual (i.e. car payments, insurance, blah blah blah...). I suggest writing up a budget.

I thought that the school gave you a budget that you were expected to follow, within reason of course??? And you are not supposed to exceed this amount. Do they not do this??

Hey Buster,

I completed a budget about two weeks ago on what I thought it would cost me per year at Pikeville. The figure that I came up with was 44,000. I figured in utilities, transportation, insurance payments, etc. I just wanted to make sure that this amount would be enough. What do you guys think?

Oh, this amount was figured by having to pay 610.00 per month rent at Ridge Cliff Apartments. I am going to Pikeville today though to search for more apartment complexes.

Thank you so much for all of your help.

To Current PCSOM Students:

I recently received the list of forms that have to be filled out before we can matriculate and the letter said that they all must be received by July 31. My problem is that I have a class that I have to take and it won't be finished until July 30. So, my question is how flexible is the school when it comes to this requirement???

Also,
Aaron, did you trip produce any new results?

You'll be fine. Just get everything else in (especially your Shots, TB stuff, etc!) Then give Angel a call and tell her your situation and everything will be cool. Just don't be like people in my class who didn't have their Hep B done (by the second year!!!) and then have to flunk their clinical rotations until they made them up later in the year.

They have so listings for apartments and houses. (Unfortunately they only give the bare essentials on the places that are listed.) If you want the address, I would be happy to send it to you though.

Hey All!

Does anyone know if Pikeville is interviewing applicants that are NOT Kentucky residents (or that live close by)?

Also, how long after sending in your secondary did you have to wait to hear about an interview?

Thanks!

Aaron Earles
02-13-2004, 06:24 PM
sandiflipflops,

I was not a KY resident. I live in West Virginia, about an hour from Pikeville. I was sent a secondary in mid October, mailed it by October 20th, and was offered an interview for December 6 on November 1.

A little history, at least what i know, about Pikeville. They interview one saturday per month, and have around 30 applicants during each interview date. They told us at my interview that getting the interview was a good sign and that we had very good chances of getting in. After the interview, on the following Monday, the committee meets to decide who to accept. I was accepted and contacted 4 days after my interview, so they are very quick.

I will say that they really push to get students that reside in the Appalachian region, but, I met one student there that was from Texas. I think that residing in a rural region will also help you. I see that you are in Conneticut, so you would want to be able to explain why you are willing to move so far away to go to medical school in the small, rural region of Pikeville, Kentucky. They will ask you this when you interview there.

I wish you all the luck in the world, and hope that you get into the medical school of your choice. I am confident that you will do very well. When they schedule your interview, please let me know and I will give you some pointers. Have a wonderful day!

Aaron,

Thanks for your post! Until now, the interview process at Pikeville has remained a mystery to me.. I did, however, get in contact with someone in admissions and was told that only 29 people have been accepted so far - So, Congratulations! You're one of few! I suppose this is good news for me - there are still some spots left! I guess it's all about waiting now.. Do you happen to know how long Pikeville interviews for?

hossofadoc
02-13-2004, 08:39 PM
Sandiflipflops- We interview till around the last week of April, just depend if we get enough students that we feel meets our requirements. Which are kind of unique, being we accept lower gpa/MCAT then we reject.

The current time we interview about 2-3 times a month in the spring...so I think we have about 5-6 interview dates left. We do accept students from outside KY and the Appalachain realm. In my class we have one from Chicago, Miami, Cincy, Philly, Memphis, Kansas City, St. Louis, Atlanta, and a Michigan pipeline (about 8 students from there). My class dosen't have anyone from the New England area, but other classes have, so don't get discourage if you think that you don't have a shot. Also, I would suggest either coming and talking to Steve Peyson (if you are able too) or calling him. If you need anymore help feel free to ask.

Hey guys,

I got the call Monday that I have a seat in next year's class. I am from Mississippi (to answer sandiflipflops question). I was notified mid-December that my file was complete. The second week of March I received an invitation to interview in early February (on a Saturday). I got the call two days later. My understanding is that they will have two more interviews (March and April) to fill the rest of the seats. Does anyone have any advice on housing in Pikeville since it seems some of you are already looking? I have a family so I would prefer to rent a house or townhouse. I am also curious as to how long it takes to get an information packet once you have been accepted?

Thanks.

hossofadoc,

Thanks for your post! Who is Steve Peyson? And, how would I get in contact with him? (Perhaps I should already know this..) It's encouraging to hear that there are some students from states other than Kentucky - thanks for letting me know! (By the way, Congratualtions Simtech! :D)

Simtech,

Congratulations and welcome to PCSOM class of 2008:clap:  . I received my packet about two weeks after I had my interview.

Sandiflipflops,

Steve Peyson is the Associate Dean for Student Services (He is in charge of the admissions staff and other people) at PCSOM. Also, I submitted my secondary application in Aug./Sept. (I can't remember which:) ) and I didn't hear anything until December. But I have to say that it took a while for my LOR to be received. As far as tips on the interview go: First, be able to articulate why you want to be a DO instead of an MD. Second, be able to explain why you want to come to PCSOM. And third, be ready for one of the interviewers to offer some "real world impressions" i.e. try to talk you out of becoming a physician. Try not to stumble on this last one. That is about all that I remember from my interview. Just relax about the interview and you will be fine. I know other people say this, but my really was one of the least stressful interviews that I have been on.

Willie B
02-13-2004, 10:29 PM
Sandiflipflops,

Sorry, I forgot to post this in my previous message:D . You can find Steve Peyson's e-mail, phone number, and home page at the PCSOM home page. Just click on "Contact Us" from the home page. sandiflipflops,

I wanted to apologize to you. After reading my previous post to you, I think that I may have sounded like I didnt think you had a chance at Pikeville because you were from Connecticut. THIS IS NOT SO!!! I think that you have a great chance, I just meant that you should have an explanation for wanting to leave your homestate. Sorry for the misconcection, if that was the case. Please forgive me!!!!!

I would be happy to give you some advice on the interview process at pikeville.

1. The interviews are on Saturday mornings, starting at 8:00 sharp. The have all the applicants in a nice, comfortable conference room in the new library on Pikeville's campus as a meeting place. There were about 25 students interviewing on the day of my interview in December. They have a welcome speach from Dr. Payson, Dr. Bedford, and a couple of other PCSOM faculty. They show you a slide presentation that is supposed to help relax you for your interview. This all takes approximately 40 mintes.

2. They interview about 4 to 5 students at a time. Each applicant is interviewed by two to three faculty members, in separate locations throughout the library. You only have one interview slot and they last around 30 minutes. Mine lasted about 45 because I was talking the interviewers ears off!!! While you are waiting on your interview, you and the rest of the applicants sit around and talk to current students, faculty members, and other staff. I WILL SAY THIS. THE STAFF AND STUDENTS AT PCSOM ARE THE FRIENDLIEST PEOPLE THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN. THEY ARE VERY, VERY HELPFUL.

3. After your interview, the students volunteer to take you on a tour of the school. The gross lab is one of the best that I have seen. The students working in the lab were very friendly and offered their assistance while they were working. They also show you several of the classrooms and labs that you will be working in.

4. The entire process, for my group, lasted from 8am till about 10:30 am. This was the most pleasant interview that I have ever been on. Pikeville is an excellent institution, with a staff that WANTS you to succeed. There was a bad snow on the ground in pikeville that saturday, so several applicants were not there.

5. DO NOT WORRY ABOUT THIS INTERVIEW BEING STRESSFUL. THEY TOLD US UP FRONT THAT THE PEOPLE THEY INTERVIEW ARE PEOPLE THAT THEY ARE INTERESTED IN, AND IT IS UP TO US TO SHOW THEM WHO WE REALLY ARE.

They like to ask ethics questions. They want to know why you want to be a DO instead of an MD. They will ask you why you want to leave ...... to come to pikeville. Just be yourself, and you will be absolutely fine. I wish you luck. Have a great day.

Aaron

Aaron, I pm'ed you with my email.

I also agree with your post about people being very friendly in Pikeville. I spent the evening before my interview checking out the town and I was blown away by how nice everyone was. (in town and at the school). This was one of several factors that persuaded me to accept at Pikeville.

Hey Paul,

I got you private message. I emailed the info to you. Another thing i really liked about pikeville was the camaraderie of the students. I dont like real competitive environments. I liked how well the students interacted at the day of my interview. They seemed to really want to help each other. See you soon.

Congratulations on your acceptance Simtech!

I know you still must be very excited! It's been 2 months since I was accepted and I still can't believe it! I can't wait to meet you and the rest of our "family" in August, or maybe even before then!

Sandiflipflops,
I just wanted to say that what hossofadoc said about meeting with Dr. Payson is probably the best advice anyone can give you right now. I met with him about 6 weeks before I was given an interview and his input helped me out A LOT! I cannot stress enough how important it would be for you to speak with him. As far as the interview goes, mine was pretty much the same as everyone else's experience. It was very low stress, and they want to get to know the real you. They told us at the beginning of the day that the people interviewing that were not from KY might have a harder time convincing the committee that they wanted to practice in an underserved area, but that is probably the main point that out-of-state students must get across. I hope this helps!

Aaron,

Hey! I'm sorry I haven't been able to get back with you here lately, but I've been so busy. I'm never hardly home anymore, so that's the reason I haven't been able to chat with you. I'm doing fine, thanks for asking. Did you end up going back to Pikeville since the last time we talked? I got your email with all of the apartment info, and I really appreciated it. I hope to hear from you soon!

Willie B,

Yes, my classes have been keeping me very busy, two of them in particular. I'm taking an upper level history class that is killing me! My professor is unreal! We have to do paper after paper, and quizzes and tests like crazy, not to mention the fact that history has always been my least favorite subject. I have a few more classes that I took b/c I thought they would be easy and I wanted to have a relaxing last semester before med school, but they have ended up being a ton of "busy work." I am so ready for Spring Break! Anyway, I'll talk to you all soon!

Hi PCSOM people!

Don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but I have heard that PCSOM is raising tuition to $27,000 for next year :scared: and I thought you all should know. Keep in mind this is only what I have heard, it's not written in stone yet, but last year at this time I was under the assumption tuition was $25K and it wasn't until June (I think) I was told about the increase to $26K. Just in case that is a problem for any of you guys.

Aaron - I survive on just the $38,500 from the government, but it is tight. With the raise in tuition I'm considering an outside loan of 2K. Not sure though.

As for a budget, the FA office gives you a guideline budget, then hands you your check with tuition subtracted. I just drew up my own budget and tweaked it when I figured out how much my utilities, etc really cost me.

Also, be prepared to not get your check until beginning of September (I thought we got it in August, so it threw my rent payment off getting it later).

Hope this info helps you guys and doesn't discourage anybody.

Can't wait to meet all of you next year!

Misty,

I know about those types of classes just being busy work. I've had more than my share of busy work classes:mad: . But atleast you only have a few more weeks left and, then it is spring break  . And then only two months left until the semester is over with. The end is in sight.

Cookie Monster,

Thanks for the heads up about the tuition increase. Atleast it is only 1K instead of much higher. Even with the tuition increase, going to school at Pikevegas is still a relative bargain compared to other schools:D .

Cookie Monster,

Thank you for the heads up about the tuition increase. I agree with Willie, Pikevegas is still a good bargain, but it is nice to know about the increase in advance. I do have a question for you when you get the time. When you go with private loans, like Nowloans, Access Group, etc, is that money disbursed through the school as well, or does the lender send the money directly to the applicant?

Hope your semester is going well. I look forward to meeting you in August. Take care!

Aaron - I am not sure where the loans go, but I would guess directly to you. I don't see why the school would be involved (since it's not a federal loan). Anybody else that knows, please correct me if I am wrong.

This past weekend must have been the weekend for speeding tickets.

Hey, has anyone found out when the white coat ceremony for us will be? Both of my parents' work schedules vary from one week to the next and I would kind of like to have them both there for this event. (Since it is THE ceremony that we make our first real committment to osteopathic medicine)

Thanks and I hope to see you all soon.

I am not for sure when the ceremony is. I would say that once the majority of the class is filled that Teresa will let us know. I will have both of my parents there as well. Hey everyone,

I have a quick question. On the financial aid packet that Teresa Jones mailed us, there is a form that is the Application for Financial Assistance. On the back of this form, it asks your sources for medical school funding. Did you guys put the Stafford (subsidized and unsubsidized loans) on this line? Also, did you guys list the private loan company that you are planning to use. I appreciate your input. I had to wait to submit my FAFSA because my parents info was so slow getting completed. I hope that it is not too late. hahaha. See you all soon.

eadysx,

Aaron,

I didn't fill in the information on the back of the financial aid page. It said that if you didn't know to just leave it blank, so I did. Also, I submitted my FAFSA a couple of weeks ago and got it processed. Then I found out the Pikeville requires parental info on the FAFSA. (I submitted it without the info) . So, now I have to go and make corrections to the FAFSA.:wow: But first, I have to wait until the parental figures get there taxes done.+pissed+

What company are you each thinking about getting a private loan from? I was thinking about NOW LOANS, what do you guys think?

Aaron

Mistyblue
02-24-2004, 12:12 PM
Willie B,

If I were you, I would go to traffic school. It's only 4 hours, and your insurance won't find out about the ticket. If you pay the ticket, then your insurance will probably find out. Also, it was much cheaper for me to go to driving school ($50 I think) than to pay for my ticket. It would be awful to have an increase in car insurance rates right when we are getting ready to have to go in debt over our heads! Are you planning on taking the KY Osteopathic Scholarship?

Aaron,
On my financial form for Pikeville, I'm leaving the stuff on the back blank since it said to do that if you're not sure. I don't know anything about the private loan companies. As of now, I'm thinking about taking the Osteopathic Scholarship, so hopefully I won't have to borrow more than the government loans. I'm still not sure though. Just send me the apt. info whenever you get a chance. I've been busy with school so I haven't had much time to do anything lately! I'll talk to ya later!

I think most people use Republic Bank because they do not charge any fees. So just write Stafford loans up to 38,500 with Republic Bank. You can call Teresa Jones and ask her what banks do not charge a fee if you feel uncomfortable using a bank you don't know.

Hey all - I just received my invitation to interview on 3/20 as well.

Also, I'm another one from New England, CT. Interested in sharing a ride? Ya, I was thinking of driving, but maybe I'll come to my senses!

Are there any other non-trads out there?

Aaron Earles
02-24-2004, 06:33 PM
BACMEDIC,

Congratulations on the interview! I am sure that you will do just fine. What is considered non traditional? I think that someone once told me that over the age of 27. hahaha.. If that is the criteria, then I am 27 and non traditional.

Good luck to you!

Willie B
02-24-2004, 10:25 PM
Aaron,

I remember reading somewhere that anything over 22 your first year was considered non-traditional. Although, with the average age of incoming 1st years being around 26 at most schools these days, I don't know how we could be classified as being non-traditional:confused: . So, I suppose what I am trying to say, is that although we won't be "traditional" we also won't be "abnormal" (in the usual sense of the word:laugh: ). Furthermore, I'm "more experienced", i.e. older, than the traditional student too.

Also, I haven't really looked at the alternative loans yet. I'm hoping that I will have enough money saved up, by the time school starts, that I won't have to worry about until the second year. I also thinking about dropping down to PRN status at the hospital that I work at right now. This way I will still have a job, and be able to work when I choose to (the holiday breaks and one or two weekends).

Willie B
02-24-2004, 10:36 PM
Misty,

Yeah it is looking like I'm going to goto to traffic school. I just hope that I can schedule it in the morning or one of my days off. And no, I'm not planning on taking the KY Osteopathic scholarship. To be honest, I'm a little undecided as to what I want to go into. So, I can't really see limiting myself to just primary care.

BACMEDIC
02-25-2004, 06:46 AM
Basically, a non-traditional is someone going into med school, but not right from college. However, I think that adcoms look at a non-traditional as those that have been out of school for a considerable amount of time and have had careers prior to going into med school, and so age many indeed be a part of the definition, at least for some adcoms. For example, when I left work to go back to school to meet the pre-requisites, there was a 25 year old who also left work to pursue school (she did have a BS), but she was not considered a non-trad, just someone who took some time off.

Can anyone from PCSOM relate what a day is like at the school? When do lectures start and when do they end (8am ? 5pm)? How about labs?

Can?t wait to get down there!

Typically, class runs from 8 to 3-5 with random breaks thrown in there. Anatomy lab is twice a week, 3 hours each. OPP lab is a once a week for two hours.

Life after anatomy (second semester) is nothing like life with it. This semester, class starts at 9 and ends around noon, for four of the five days. I've got the first semester schedule on my hard drive, if anybody wants it.

I've got an interview with Pikeville coming up. Do any of you have any tips on what to expect at the interview?

I really hope I get in!!

Aaron Earles
02-26-2004, 02:55 PM
skb21,

Congratulations on the interview!!! I bet you are excited. So you want some advice on the interview. I will see if I can give you some details. If you have any more questions, feel free to PM me.

1. You are to arrive at PCSOM around 8:00 a.m. They will have you and the other interviewees sign in and mingle. After that, Dr. Payson introduces himself and a few other faculty members and then shows you a slide show on PCSOM and the Pike County area. This lasts approximately 35 minutes or so.

2. A group of students at PCSOM volunteer to have a question / answer session. They asked the professors to leave the room at this time so that we would feel comfortable asking questions about the curriculum and school. At the same time this is occurring, they will be taking several students at a time for their interviews.

3. The interview session consists of 2 to 3 professors/faculty/physicians to every student. They have several groups of interviews going at the same time. The interview lasts approximately 30 to 40 minutes, mine was about 40. They ask general questions during this time. BE prepared to be asked an ethics question. They are very big on ethic questions, however, dont panic. They just want to see how you repsond.

4. After the interview, you return to the room where you watched the video presentations and talk with professors, students, Mrs. Hamilton, etc. This was the most productive and friendly interview that I have ever been on. After several people have interviewed, the students take you on a tour of the school, which lasts approximately 45 minutes.

All in all, the entire process lasted about 2.5 hours. It was very enjoyable and low stress. The started the day by saying that most of the people that they interview WILL be offered a spot. He said that they were interviewing us because we had something to offer them that they really were interested in and that we needed to be ourselves during the process and NOT TO WORRY.

This is a great school and I think that it is severely underrated. The students, faculty, and admissions staff are extremely helpful and very friendly.

Oh, they usually let you know in about 3 to 4 days if they have offered you a spot in the class.

I wish you all the luck in the world and look forward to having you as a classmate. Feel free to PM me with any more questions. Sorry for the long post.

Have any of you guys thought much about what you want to specialize in?

I work in surgery, so I think I want to do something surgically related. When I first decided that I wanted to be a doctor, I wanted to go into ortho. After working some ortho cases in the O.R., I like it but don't know if that's what I want to go into anymore. I like general and ob/gyn as well.

My thinking is that I would like to do surgery without losing the practical aspects of medicine.

skb21
02-28-2004, 06:46 AM
I should have added that ENT is something I'm strongly considering since it is somewhat of a primary care surgical subspeciality. I'd get to operate and treat patients for the long term. There seems to be a good balance of OR work and clinic work. I don't know much about the call ENT's have to take.

skb21,

I have given this question a lot of thought. I took a speciality aptitude survey, and it said that I would be best suited for Pediatrics, hematology, dermatology and radiation oncology. Half of these I promised I would never do, hahhaha.

Anyway, Internal medicine and family practice are very appealing to me, but I have also considered emergency medicine. Like you, I have also thought about ortho, but that is fading pretty quick. I guess that I will find out what I like during our year 3 and 4 rotations. See you soon,

That really sounds like an interesting job. I am a clinical exercise physiologist working in Cardiac Rehabilitation at Cabell Huntington Hospital. I had to have ACLS and BLS training for my field. I like anatomy, but I am really concerned about my asthma acting up. I was in the lab for like 2 minutes in december at my interview and i had to take a puff on my inhaler. skb21, what a coincidence, I am BLS and ACLS certified, but please, dont defibrillate me unless I really, really need it. When i was getting my certificaiton this summer, One of the dudes in Marshall's med school class forgot to yell clear, and lit me up like a christmas tree.

Hey Eric,

I am not a medic, but work in a similar field. I work in Cardiac Rehabilitation, which is why I am ACLS and BLS certified.

I like your quote about natural selection. haha

Hey guys.

I saw the beginning of a great case today. It was a hand assisted laprascopic nephrectomy. Pretty cool. They used a hand port where they could do the laprascope while also using their hand to assist. I saw the case to the point where the surgeon disected out the right colon, from the hepatic flexure down to the cecum. Then, the call crew came in, and I didn't get to see the exposed kidney once they got into the retroperitoneal space.

This is a very cool job I have. Yesterday, I got to scrub in on a subchondral intra-medullary nail to fix a fractured distal femur.

You have an awesome job! The most invasive procedure that I am involved in is taking someone's blood sugar with a glucometer. I get to read a lot of ECGs though. I guess that is pretty cool. Take care.

Aaron,

I have to say that this job is the best anatomy class I've ever had. A D.O. at the hospital I work at did the same thing I do before he entered WVSOM. He told me that I will find gross anatomy somewhat frustrating because I'm used to seeing everything in color and bleeding, whereas in gross, everything is grey with no blood. It should be interesting, but I feel pretty good about being able to identify the structures in gross with the exception of thoracic structures and cranial structures. We don't do any thoracic or neuro surgery at this rural hospital. Heck, we've only had an orthopod for five years and got a urologist less than a year ago.

skb21,

I am sure that you will do fine in anatomy. I think it will be very interesting too, I am just worried about my asthma acting up. I think i will be fine though. Many people have told me that if you can make it by the first semester, that you should do fine. I am not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I do try really hard. Man, I cant wait to meet everyone. One of the most attractive things at PCSOM was the comaraderie of the students.

Keep in touch.

wow your job sounds awesome.... i am taking medical terminology so as i was reading your post i was trying to identify everything you said! you've definantly got a head start on the anantomy... the only anantomy that i've had thus far is my anatomy lecture course which is an undergrad, regional anatomy course - gross is gonna probably be overwhelming for me (i am prepared to work my butt off though!)

although i don't have any cool jobs, while i volunteered at the labor and delivery unit at a local hospital here, i got to see many vaginal births and ce-sects... i absolutely loved it! i can't wait to learn obstetrics!!

i just wanna know how did you get such a cool job??? lol

Well, I got my degree in Biochemistry and didn't want to use it right away. I had worked as a part time pharmacy tech at this hospital, so I talked to the director of surgery about letting me work in surgery. She let me, and I've been working there for almost two years now.

Thats awesome! I have to admit, I like working in my hospital. For the most part, it is pretty cool. I think that my work experience in the hospital setting really helped me get accepted this year. Hi guys,

Since we are talking about work, I just got home from working between 14 or 15 hour day (I normally work 8.5 days). I really have to say that there wasn't a good reason for me to come in early today though. There just wasn't that much to do. For those of you who don't know, I usually work in the blood bank of my local hospital. The day did get more interesting/ busier once evening shift got there though.

Aaron,
I hope you have fun at your bro's wedding this weekend. I will be going down to Cincy to visit relatives.

I must admit. My trip isn't exactly of a personal nature. I have an interview with U of Cincy on Monday morning. But, I think my chances of being accepted are very slim at this school because I 'm out of state. The visiting with relatives is just a bonus.

To Current PCSOM Students,

I have a question. I know about the 10 Core Sites that PCSOM has for their clinical rotations. My question is, Do you have to complete a rotation at EACH of those core sites, or do you have a set number of sites that you must visit? I was looking at the AOPTIC page on PCSOM webpage and those hospitals look very good, but I was thinking about doing a couple of electives outside of the core sites, if I will be permitted to.

Thanks everyone, will talk to you soon.

No, you don't have to rotate at all ten sites. During the later part of your second year, you will be assigned to a core site where you'll do most of your required rotations. I believe there is a lottery process, where you list your top 3 choices. During your 4th yr, you do have opportunities to do "away rotations" for your electives. I hope this helped.

Thanks. But honestly, I'm not really that upset about it. I mean, even if I don't get in at UC, I will still be attending a wonderful school at PCSOM. It is like I told my interviewer, that I was very fortunate to get accepted at my #2 choice (Pikeville is only #2 because of the fact that most of my family lives in Cincy and it would be very woderful if I could go and be closer to them)

I am glad to hear that you are not worrying about it. My family physician did his internal medicine residency at UC and loved it there too. He came back to WV to practice though to be closer to his wife's family.

Funny thing is, I didnt think I even had a chance at PCSOM, but when I interviewed there, I absolutely loved the school and atmosphere. I was very lucky this time, not only did I get in one school, but into two so far. Anyway, If Cincy is your first choice, I hope that you get to go. See you later bro.

I was in the same boat you are in last year, I talked to Angel who hooked me up with my current roommate so if you're really interested, you should contact her. Well, I interviewed with Dr. Murphy and Dr. Laurich (micro professor), and they put me through the grinder. I had some grades questions to answer, and I don't know that gave them what they were looking for with my answer. I'm one of those with a mediocre GPA but an above average MCAT score.

So, I'm in a wait and see situation right now.

Xavier went 13 for 17 from beyond the arc. Any team with that kind of luck will win 9 times out of 10. I think my boys let their energy level drop at the end as well.

If I don't get in this go around, I'm just going to try again next year. I'll go back to Mississippi State, take about 18 hours of classes in the fall, and apply again. With the PCOM campus scheduled to open up in Atlanta next year, that's very attractive.

Yeah, it does seem like the time is a flyin'. Last night I actually realized that it was already late March. I've been searching for a new computer and been thinkin of getting a PS2. (Atleast I should be able to afford these right now. I doubt I would be able to if we were in school though:laugh: .) That is where my head has been lately. So, it took my by surprise that we have less than five months left until school starts.

What's Up Willie? I bought a PS2 a couple of years ago. Definately has some great games with it. Last year I made a huge mistake and played my brother's XBOX. Needless to say, I got hooked and had to buy one myself. I enjoy the football games and some of the action games like Splinter Cell and Knights of the Old Republic.

I dont know if I asked this yet, but how is everyone's financial aid quest going? I talked with Teresa about 2 weeks ago and she said that our budget was set at around 46,700. I called access group and applied for another loan in addition to the subsidized and unsubsidized that the government offers.

As of right now, it looks like I will be living in Ridge Cliff Apartments. Janet said that she expected to have a vacany sometime in June, so that would work out nicely. Lots of stuff to do prior to starting. See you guys soon.

Aaron,

Yeah, I know about that getting hooked thing. I tried playing a PS2 game when I was at my brother's a few weeks ago. This is what started me thinking of getting one myself. Also, I still don't know where I will be living come time to start school. I haven't even been down to look at places yet. I know, I'm little behind on things, but I've had other more pressing things lately.

Aaron,

Is the financial aid figure of 46,700 that you quoted just for single students, or for families as well?

Hey Simtech,

When I talked with Teresa, I was under the assumption that was for the single student. If tuition is going to be 27,000, then that would give us about 20,000 for living expenses. Pikeville has some pretty expensive apartment properties, but I guess that they are reasonable in the grand scheme of things. The place that i am looking to rent from is $510.00 a month.

I talked with a second year student about a month or so ago, and they told me that the 38,500 in federal subsidized and unsubsidized loans was enough for them, but they had to be very frugal with spending.

Sorry that I could not be any more help than this. When i did an estimated budget for myself, I came up with a figure very close to what Teresa state. However, i am single without any dependents.

Teresa also said that she was finalizing the budget and was preparing to send it to us.

BTW, has anyone else received anything from the school, other than the packet with the scholarship, vaccination records, etc. It seems like PCSOM told me during my interview that we would be getting stuff freqently through the mail. I just wanted to check with everyone else.

That's all you'll get until about June/July depending on when I get my rearend in line (it's sorta of getting kicked around alot lately, thanks to Respiratory Phys) and put out the PCSOM Survival Guide out.

Aaron,

I haven't received anything except for this packet yet either. Actually, I received this packet twice:confused: . I guess that PCSOM just wanted to make sure that I got the packet:laugh: .

hossofadoc,

Dont feel bad about Respiratory physiology being difficult. I had a fit learning about it also. I work in Pulmonary rehab and have to explain the pathology of COPD and how the lungs work all the time. That stuff is very difficult, and I am sure that you will do just fine in it. So you are the one that is preparing our survival packs. I figured that would be the faculty preparing that. It must be hard to get that stuff together while taking your classes.

Anyway, thanks for letting us know about that packet. See you soon.

Hey guys, I have a question. Does anyone know if PCSOM posts a list of the students that match? I have a friend of the family that is doing a residency in Dayton, but I dont know if it is at Grandview or somewhere else. Just curious to see if anyone knew. Thanks,

Aaron

simtech,

congratulations on baby #2! That's so exciting! When is your new arrival supposed to be here?

Aaron,

My trip was great! I went with 3 of my friends and we had a blast. I've had the worst case of senioritis since I've been back. There's nothing like Vegas! I've missed talking with you too. I emailed you about 2 weeks ago and you never responded, so I had a feeling you didn't get it. I was having some computer problems, so that may be why you didn't get it.

I also received two packets in the mail. I hadn't turned any of my stuff in when I received the second one, so I thought they were giving me a hint to get things moving! I felt relieved to know that I wasn't the only one who received two of them!

MISTY!!!!!

I am glad to hear that you had a great trip. I have never been to Vegas, just Pikevegas.

I dont know why they sent two packets, unless they were making sure that we had a copy. I have a lot to talk with you about. I will send you and email shortly telling you what has been going on.

I sent my info in about a month ago, but I still need to have my doc write a letter proving I had a physical. I also need to get this year's TB test.

Hey Misty, have you thought about where you going to live in Pikevegas. I know we have a lot of time left, I just wanted to live in the same area as a lot of classmates in case we needed each other. I am getting real excited about starting. I know we will be busy, but I will be doing something that we love.

Anyway Misty, it was really good hear from you. I would think that you are almost complete with the semester, it seems like you started early in January. i cant believe it is almost April. I will talk with you soon.

This is getting a bit ahead, but do any of you know how PCSOM does their elective rotations and sub-internships? By that, I mean do they let us rotate through hospitals that are affiliated with them in some way only, or are we allowed to do a sub-internship at the place we would like to do our residency at?

For instance, let's say I decide that I want to do orthopaedics. When the chance to do a sub-internship comes along, I would like to do it at Campbell Clinic in Memphis, because that is where I would want to be a resident. Would I be allowed to do this?

skb21,

That is a good question. I was wondering that myself. The core rotation sites are a bit confusing to me as well. I think that it is good to plan ahead.

Feel free to correct me if I've gotten something twisted. I think sunnydayz, in a previous post, summed up the process well...

You rank your top three core sites (http://pcsom.pc.edu/clinical/sites.htm), out of the ten, you'd most like to be at. Organizers try to best match students
