A Sigh of Relief

The biochemistry grades finally came back on Thursday and I was pleased to discover that I did really well on the exam! I managed to come within 1 point of the grade that I was hoping for and that takes some of the pressure off as I will not have to dig myself out of a hole. Back in 2005 when I first took biochem my first exam was not very good at all. So it feels good to find that all the studying paid off. Its also a great motivator to keep at it and not let up. This is how I had imagined medical school would be back in 1990 when I was dreaming of getting admitted. Now I just need to keep going and stick to what works. My advisor was very pleased with my grade and was very encouraging. But she also warned me that the next biochemistry test (a week from Monday) is one of the harder ones (covers citric acid cycle, glycolysis etc...). I have no doubt that it will be, so I will have to keep to my schedule.
Everybody's schedule has been kind of thrown out of whack here towards the end of the week as the white coat ceremony draws closer. Family and friends are coming to town and studying is being put aside. Friday there was a campus open house where family and friends were able to tour the school and the various labs as well as sit in on a number of presentations given by the faculty. My wife and I went and had a good time. It is great to be able to have her share and be a part of my life at school and she really wants to be more connected as well. At the apartment we live in you can tell there are a lot of visitors as you run into groups of proud parents all over the place. I think the students know that this is the end of the "welcome to school" festivities and are taking full advantage of it before things really ramp up with the addition of anatomy next week.
I cannot express how grateful I am to have been given this second chance by God. And it all seems so fresh and new. Its truly amazing. My wife feels it too, like it is the first time, the way it should have been back in 2005. But I wouldn't be here now, if it were not for all that crap that happened before. Where we are today is a combination of the good and bad choices and experiences. For me if things had not collapsed in 2007 I might have gone on to somehow get through school and kept the alcohol "secret" for a while longer. And then who knows what might have happened. I am grateful to the Lord for bringing me through that time and for blessing me with this awesome opportunity.
