So I am now 3 weeks into medical school and all I can say is, I like it! I am having a really good time studying and learning the material. That does not mean it is easy, but I am enjoying the process more than I thought I would. I am still sticking to my routine of going over the material once before lecture and then as soon as possible after lecture I sit down and construct a study guide on a yellow legal pad that highlights important points and concepts. So my day goes pretty much like this:
Up by 7:00am, at school between 8-9:00, Noon study, 1:00pm study, class and/or lab, between 3-4:30 go to the gym and workout, home by 5:30/6:00 to spend time with my wife and have dinner, 7-7:30 go to the Library to study until 11 or 12 and then in bed by 12:30/1:00am.
I am making it a point to take at least one day off and so far that has worked. Now anatomy has just started so I am not sure how my schedule will hold up when that course really kicks in. Right now we have a big biochemistry test coming up on Monday morning and that is taking the priority position right now. But I have to say that keeping up with the material and studying a bit each day is really paying off and I feel prepared and not at all stressed about the test. I will definitely spend Sunday reviewing, but it will be a relaxed review as I have all the major concepts down already (i.e. citric acid cycle, pentose pathway, gluconeogenesis, glycogen synthesis, fatty acid biosynthesis, beta oxidation, electron transport system....). It feels great to be ahead of things. And speaking as one who tried the cramming method before, it just doesn't pay off as well in medical school when you have this kind of volume of material that needs to be worked through. Well see how I do on the test.
As for the Navy application, it is waiting for one more signature and then its off to the board. My recruiter thinks I have a good chance of being selected and that I should have an answer by the end of September. I keep praying that the Lord would open this door of opportuntity up for us.
My wife and I are still a part of our church's worship team (I play guitar and sing and she sings). This has been a blessing as it allows time away from school and time for us to minister together. She is having a great time being home and has been very encouraging and supportive about school/Navy. She is a wonderful woman and I am blessed and lucky to have her as my wife.
Well, it's time to get back to carbohydrate metabolism!
