September 6, 2009

Another week down and things are still going well. We had a big biochemistry exam on Monday (big meaning it covered a large amount of material) and I was very pleased with my score, a high B. The mean score for the class was a high C. So what that means for me is, that combined with my first result I am actually in the upper half of the class right now! Now I know that at this point in time that means very little (there are still 4 more exams in this course) and it is still very early, but it is a position that I had never been in before so I am pretty jazzed about it for the moment.

I am really enjoying the material so far in biochemistry. And as I have said before I think it is because I am studying everyday. I have some classmates that are trying the cramming method (which is what I used to do) and they seem more stressed out. When you study a little everyday (and for me that means anywhere from 3-4.5 hours a day) you keep up with what is being thrown at you and you have a chance to actually be exposed to the material/concepts multiple times. So what I am doing is what I said before; 1) reviewing the material once prior to lecture 2) going to the lecture 3) reviewing the material sometime during the day after the lecture 4) review it again after completing this routine for new material. What ends up happening is that as I go over the material multiple times I am in essence "fine tuning" my understanding of the concepts. Now with anatomy in full swing I thought that it might be hard to keep this up, but so far it is still working. The thing with medical school is that you need to "keep at it" everyday (with a day per week off to "recharge") you can't relax too much. What happened to a bunch of people this week was that after the biochemistry exam a lot of people decided to take a break (because they had studied so hard for the exam and the schedule appear to be less intense the following 2 weeks due to Labor Day). But anatomy began and was very quietly adding a significant amount of reading and review to everyone'e plate. And now they are starting to see how far behind they actually have become. You can't let up for any length of time.

More on anatomy and the cadaver lab later
