And So It Begins

Posted 10-31-2009 at 08:31 PM by 2000 Man

August 8, 2009

I am back in medical school!! It seems so unreal at times and I thank God often for giving me this second chance. This week was orientation which is a 3 day welcome/info session/registration session. Orientation is very pleasant with all kinds of welcomes and "we're glad you're here" speeches, helpful hints and subtle warnings about what is to come. Having been through this before I know all too well what is waiting for us starting next week when classes start...

6 Days and Counting

Posted 10-31-2009 at 08:09 PM by 2000 Man

July 28, 2009

It's now about 6 days until the start of school and things are all coming together. The loans are in, I have started my random testing program and I am in the process of winding down to a shift a week at the ED. I have a sense of excitment and foreboding as the day approaches since I have been through this once before and know exactly what lies in store for myself and my future classmates. It will be no picnic but I am determined to do much better this time (with God's...

Second Chance

Posted 10-31-2009 at 07:55 PM by 2000 Man

July 22, 2009

By the start of 2008 I was working as a RN in a local emergency department. I had lost 75 pounds and was now sober. My marriage was in the midst of a second honeymoon and I was enjoying life again. I had come to grips with the fact that I had ruined my shot at medical school and thought that I had put that behind me.

Then one night in Febuary I had a dream; I was back in medical school, doing well and enjoying it. When I awoke I was surprised by the dream...

Prologue V

Posted 10-31-2009 at 07:38 PM by 2000 Man

I am going to cut to the chase at this point in my story. By the time I entered medical school for the first time in the Summer of 2005, I had a drinking problem. It had been going on for at least 3 years and was steadily dragging me down. The first month and a half the excitement of being in school managed to keep it in check. But soon the novelty of being in medical school wore off and the reality of the rigor of the program began to wear on me. I started putting off studying in order to drink.

Prologue Pt IV

Posted 10-31-2009 at 07:22 PM by 2000 Man

So after stepping down as pastor of the church we had planted and finishing nursing school and getting my R.N. license, I was offered a new nursing graduate position in an emergency room in the busiest ER in the state. This was one of those steep learning curve, "sink or swim" situations and I learned a lot (like I would never want to do this for any kind of extended period or as a physician). Also during this time I took the MCAT and began applying to medical school.

Composition composites

Posted 10-31-2009 at 09:55 AM by Black Rose (Dental notes)

All composites are a mixture of a resin and filler. The two commonly used resins are either BIS GMA or urethane dimethacrylate.

Resin
BIS GMA resin
It is made by a reaction between bisphenol A and glycidylmethyacrylate. This resin is a very thick consistency at room temperature.
So, a diluent monomer TEGMA(triethylene glycol dimethacrylate) to reduce the viscosity and allow the filler particles to be added to the resin.

All composites are quite hydrophobic...

Prologue Pt III

Posted 10-31-2009 at 09:19 AM by 2000 Man

By 2001 my life had taken a different course than I had originally thought it would; I had become a Christian, got married, and had become a pastor of a small church. The ministry was not able to provide us with an income so I was bi-vocational working part-time as a nursing assistant. As it became apparent that the church was not going to grow quickly I thought it might be a good idea to return to school and become a registered nurse. And in 2002 I returned to school.

Nursing education...

Prologue Pt II

Posted 10-31-2009 at 09:12 AM by 2000 Man

So having convinced myself that I could do well in school I enrolled in my state university as a biology major at the age of 28. I really enjoyed school and did fairly well (although there were a few bumps along the way such as calculus that did not help my GPA very much), and graduated with my BS in Biology in 1993 at the age of 31. I took the MCAT and did not do so well on it, scoring a 24R. My GPA ended up being 3.3 and I had a number of ECs such as various community volunteering experiences,...

Prologue Part I

Posted 10-31-2009 at 09:11 AM by 2000 Man

The path that led me to medical school was anything but straight, filled with a number of detours and setbacks. Becoming a physician was not something that I had always dreamed of. As a child I was a good student until I got to high school, at which point I found 1) music (i.e. being in a rock band) and 2) girls. With these two distractions grades and schoolwork went way down on my list of priorities and in the end I did not graduate high school (got my GED 4 years later).

I spent my...

Resin composite

Posted 10-30-2009 at 09:55 AM by Black Rose (Dental notes)

It is simply shortened to 'composite'.
Enamel
Although they have tooth-colored, they have special design on anterior teeth for esthetic and posterior teeth for strength and abrasion resistance.
Both of cases of the material are attached physically to the enamel by means of the acid-etch technique.
Moreover, composites is strong in thin sections when attached to enamel. The enamel margins can be bevelled, prepared with cavosurface angle of 90 degrees, or undercut.
Dentin...
