A few ideas...

Posted 07-04-2008 at 11:02 AM by Carissa (High School MD)

So, this past Tuesday I was volunteering at Hospital A (if you have no idea what "Hospital A" is, look at this post), and I had a few ideas.

Like I've said before, I volunteer in Geriatrics at Hospital A, and I notice that all of the rooms look a bit unpleasant. I mean, it is a hospital after all, so I know that all of the rooms are not going to have much decor going on, but still, it...

Rejection...

Posted 06-29-2008 at 09:57 PM by Carissa (High School MD)

This past spring, I took the admission test for Columbia University's Science Honors Program. You can read more about exactly what the program is, but in a nutshell, if I got into the program, I would be able to take a course at Columbia every Saturday through the school year. Unfortunately, I did not get in.

I'm not too upset, really. I didn't actually expect to get in. Plus, the letter said that there were over 1900 applicants...

Back to my Summer Routine- Hospital Volunteering

Posted 06-25-2008 at 06:08 PM by Carissa (High School MD)

Yesterday was my first day of the summer at Hospital A, and today was my second week back at Hospital B. If you're curious about the whole "Hospital A Hospital B" thing I have going on here, it's just my way of keeping some sense of privacy in not sharing the actual hospital's names ;). Here's an overall sense of the two hospitals:

Hospital A- Hospital A is where I volunteer on Tuesdays. It's an inner-city hospital, and it says right in the mission statement that...

Sorry it's been so long!

Posted 06-19-2008 at 09:53 AM by Carissa (High School MD)

OK, so first of all, I really, really, really need to appologize for totally abandoning this blog! I know what you're thinking:
"Pshhh, who cares? Does anyone actually even read this blog anyway??"
But that's not the point! I always start things off so strong, only to completely loose it (like, for example, long term assignments...), and I don't want this blog to be one of those things.

So, if you've actually read up to this point, you're...

Tests, Tests, Tests...

Posted 03-26-2008 at 01:17 PM by Carissa (High School MD)

OK, first of all, again, I am sorry for going so long between posts. When I started this blog, I meant for it to be a day-by-day thing, but I guess that's just not going to work for me. I'll try really hard to post once a week or maybe more (unlike the once every two weeks pattern I've fallen into). In fact, I don't even know why I never bother to post. I haven't been too busy. In fact, I'm on break now.

Well, I have been pretty stressed out. I have a lot of long-term projects...

A Week in Review

Posted 03-13-2008 at 02:16 PM by Carissa (High School MD)

OK, so this post won't just be filling you in on what's happened in the past week, it'll be more like the past three weeks, but "The Past Three Weeks in Review" isn't as catchy. ;)

So, what's happened? Well, to start off, I got through my "Uh-Oh Monday" week (see my previous post if you have no idea what I'm talking about). Actually, I got through it fairly well, considering I have a 4.2 GPA as of the end of the second trimester.

So, here are a few...

An "Uh-Oh" Monday

Posted 02-25-2008 at 07:33 PM by Carissa (High School MD)

I'll preface this post by saying yes, I am aware that I should be getting a head start on my work for the week rather than blogging. However, I'd like to have this blog entry stand as an explanation for my lack of presence on SDN for a while. How do I know this? Well, did you ever have one of those Mondays where you take a break to look at your planner and you think "Uh-oh, I'm sure going to be busy for the next few weeks." Unfortunately, this was one of those days.

I'm finally...

End of Cheerleading

Posted 02-21-2008 at 04:56 PM by Carissa (High School MD)

Well, this blog is not exactly off to a great start. I have already gone nearly a week without a new post! Oh, well, at least I finally have some news, although it isn't very happy. Yesterday was the last day of cheerleading!

At least I had a great season, though. It was my first year of cheering, and I have to say, pardon the cliche, I loved every minute of it. And to those of you who aren't...

The Start of the Medical Science Club

Posted 02-15-2008 at 08:59 PM by Carissa (High School MD)
Updated 02-21-2008 at 05:00 PM by Carissa

My friend and I have been planning on creating a Medical Science Club for a while now, since almost the beginning of the year, and now it's almost finally a reality. We have a great advisor, the Anatomy and Physiology teacher, who, I think, is almost as excited about the club as we are. And, as of this past Tuesday, the principal of our school also approves of our club.

The next step is to recruit members. Although the club is not officially starting until next fall, we want to get...

Book Review: What I Learned in Medical School

Posted 02-13-2008 at 04:11 PM by Carissa (High School MD)

I just finished a great book last night- What I Learned in Medical School: Personal Stories of Young Doctors, edited by Kevin M. Takakuwa, Nick Rubahkin, and Karen E. Herzig. This inspiring books contains 22 first hand accounts of what medical school is like for these various people. Although these stories give you an almost unwanted insight into the difficulties and prejudices faced by medical...
