I had an idle conversation the other day with a soldier who upon hearing that I am headed for a career as a clinical psychologist in the Army told me to check into Ranger school. I'm pretty certain that his advice was directed at officers in general, and that he meant that Ranger school was one way to advance a career.

Now I have no delusions or intentions of serving as a combatant, but I am interested in working with the Ranger/Special Forces community, doing operational psychology (e.g., assessment and selection for special mission units, stress monitoring at SERE school etc.), pursuing career advancement and leadership training, and having marginally more credibility as a shrink in the military. I'd like the challenge, but it doesn't seem plausible that the Army would send a psychologist to Ranger school.

Does anyone know if there would be a place for a psychologist in any sort of combat-oriented training such as Ranger school, Airborne school, Air assault, etc.? I've only heard of SERE school for psychologists who will go on to work at SERE school down the road, but I'm new to the Army and don't know much. Any information is appreciated.
