General Re-application Info
 

Is there a good thread for general info on how to reapply?

This is my story.. specific advice is also appreciated. Basically, I was sure I would get in off the waitlist to the school I was interested in. They wanted me, but since I had interviewed late they told me there would not be space in the class (maybe they're nice to everyone, I don't know). After a lot of waiting, they told me that they are not accepting ANYONE off the waitlist. During my interview they told me they would really like to have me and that I should re-apply early to be admitted this cycle.

I am not sure if I should get new LORs, write a new PS, etc. I really liked my application package the first time, and I think they did too. In my heart I feel like my PS is as good as I would ever want it to be. But I'm pretty sure it's bad form to resubmit the same application with only a few changes..

Any thoughts? Thank you very much.

Well, if you've been accepted to another school I think you should probaby go there instead. Many times schools are nice just because when really they are just being nice.

If you have to reapply, then I think you should change your personal statement but keep the same LORs.

I made minor changes to my personal statement - primarily to reflect the passage of time and another year's worth of activities. (I liked mine a lot, too)

I used a committee letter (I believe it was somewhat "new") but the underlying LORs were the same.

I got accepted at the school that encouraged me to reapply, but I didn't bank on it. I applied to lots of schools the 2d time around and would encourage anyone else to do the same.

Finally, while I got in with a reapplication that looked a lot like the unsuccessful original, I think there's some luck there. After all, the original application was good enough to get rejected. So if you have the opportunity to add to/improve an unsuccessful application, it's probably a goo idea to do so.

I'm in a similar situation. I sent in 6 secondaries last year and was granted 4 interviews (I have a good excuse why I wasn't granted an interview for the other two). Anyways, I was put on 4 waitlists and felt like I came very close to being accepted by each of the 4 schools. So overall, I was also pleased with my application package. I felt that if I would have had one more advantage (e.g. volunteer experience, applied a lot earlier instead of last minute, or research experience) than I would have gotten accepted. My problem this year is that, I really don't want to change my personal statement. It involves my (for the lack of a better word) best experience and most influential person. Also I could not have written it any better. So should I send it in as is (probably not), change it around a little, or write an entirely different letter involving my improvements since last application cycle (even though, I don't really think I've changed that much at all). Thanks for any advice. Sorry this is so long, but in a way it was kind of therapeutic.

It's time for me to submit my reapplication as well. I've been sitting on the reapplication for some time now, in hopes of getting off the waitlists that I was on, but it's time to stop being in denial and admit defeat. Sad.

can't you remain on the current waitlists while reapplying? that's what I would consider doing. just hang in there and reapply while waiting. :thumbup:

i would say go ahead and keep the same PS you used the first time around (if you say it's that good and you couldn't write it any better). Most likely, your PS was not the reason you didn't get in anywhere...so keep it the same...unless you did some new amazing ECs while you were waiting for prior decisions--then you might want to talk about those.

So, would anyone like to critique my personal statements?

I thought it was just be I was on a number of alternate/wait lists..actually I am still on a number of them. I was waiting to reapply until I heard from them, but nothing thus far.... :confused: I have the application ready to go. I had been debating on applying before I recieved an answer but you all have cleared that up ...I will be sending mine today.

I was all prepared to go school too...I even quit my job...now I am broke with no place to go. :(

Here's a dumb question when you reapply even if you recieved an interview and the whole 9 yards does all of the info from the school have to be sent again? :scared:

I would think so.

I know that anyone that any that holds personal information (e.g. SSN and such) have a legal requirement to hold onto those documents for 7 years, but that doesn't mean they will use them again. I really doubt the admin office would search for your file unless you specifically called and asked them to.

Wow! Really!? I don't want people holding onto info like that for such a long time! Do you have a link or source for that?

hi. i prolly gonna have to reapply, but i have yet to begin AMCAS due to a unexpected incident with the school i was planning to matriculate at.

most likely i will have to withdraw my acceptance and reapply.
now how bad is it to start this process now in September?
I graduated Berkeley 2002. Luckily I took the MCATs 4/02, so my scores should still be good at most schools correct - since they last for 3 years?

my personal statement is solid and have no desire to change it, although i guess i might have to reflect on this past year. so i guess reading from the comments above...sending in the same PS isnt suicide?

and about LORs...I had individuals professors write them for me. Do I need to obtain more/new LORs? and from who? I have been out of school for 2 years supporting my mom and bro.

i never thought i would be in this position, but i am...and i would welcome any advice you reapplicants have. thank you very much.

jlee, mcat's fine...tweak the PS a little to reflect this past year...Update the dates on the LOR's...add or subtract from the # of LORs, if you think it'll strengthen your app. If you have time...before you submit your AMCAS set up a meeting with some of the schools that rejected you to see other areas you can improve your app.
