I didn't expect to hear anything until March but I was bored this morning and logged into the U of U online portal and noticed there was a section that was added (Application Status). I clicked on it and bam- said I was accepted!! Very pleasant surprise. I don't know how long that was like that though because the last time I logged in was to choose interview dates. I haven't gotten anything in postal mail yet.

MD/PhD Interview Notification
Good News: Finally heard back!
Bad News: Not offered an MD/PhD interview. In case any of you are still in limbo, at least you know that they've finally gotten around to reviewing applications and making interview decisions. :) |

As was said, the gross anatomy lab is quite a walk from everything else, which is probably the main reason you didn't visit it. It's an anatomy lab, you didn't miss anything, there are better labs there are worse labs. I can tell you however there is not a better gross anatomy professor, period, and I have spent over 8 hours a week in anatomy labs as both a student and an instructor since fall 2007, and count several anatomy professors among my closest friends. The UofU SOM anatomy professor is the best, hands down. I think that the attitude of the students depends largely on who you talk to, not only within a class but also depending on which class you are talking to. The current curriculum is only in its third year, meaning that the current 3rd years were the guinea pigs. It was not the best of circumstances and their experience and therefore attitude reflects this. Many things were improved for the second years and their attitude generally reflects this. By the time things have come around to my class, many of the kinks in the curriculum seem to be ironed out and from what I have seen and discussed with my classmates we generally like the curriculum and our experience and seem to have great attitudes regarding the school and our experience. It is also what you make of it. Our class is very close and works together. We have fun together, study together and help each other out. At the end of phase I the instructors were a little surprised at our overall class average and we as students have attributed it to the way that we work together. We did not lose a single student due to grades in phase I. You will get a great curriculum, with professors who know what they are talking about, are personable, approachable and genuinely care about the students. What you do with it and with your classmates is largely up to you. Lastly, there is plenty to do here. I don't know what you are looking for that you aren't seeing. There is a plethora of outdoor activities, sporting events, bars, clubs and pretty much anything that you would want to do. This week, of the things that I know that are going on, there is a group going to the Jazz game Saturday night (and basically the same for every Jazz game), a large group going to a club with dueling pianos and people up at Sundance Film Festival. I have seen groups headed out to run and am betting that with the snow there will be a group headed to snowboard since they all bought season passes. There is also a Super bowl party in the works. Ok so I said more than a little. If anyone wants more information or has other questions feel free to PM me. I am not on here often, but if you PM me I will give you my email address. Good luck to everyone!! |
For the record, I interviewed on that same date as Harmonia and I had a different type of experience - a much brighter one. Thanks for the examples though, those really make the school and city's life shine.Great post.

But Im glad you had a great interview experience. WAHUVU, Thank you very much for the additional insight. It is great to hear feedback from current students, which makes all the difference. I am looking forward to attending the University of Utah and I thank you again for taking the time to write about your experiences! :D |

Any Idaho applicants have an acceptance at this point? If so when did you interview? Thanks
|
Can anyone that has been denied give a timeframe from time of interview to denial notice? I want to know if there is a possible time frame where I can guess I'm safe until the end of March acceptances. Thanks :)
|
Interview tomorrow. I'm freaking out a little bit.

On another note, MS1's and 2's are all testing tomorrow so you will not be able to attend any classes, and will be a little limited in interaction with the students. If you have anything that you want to know just ask me. |

No need. Seriously, just BE YOURSELF and let your passion for medicine and for people show. All I did to prepare was go over some research project I did a while ago, which I wasn't even asked about. Know your application well obviously (which you should anyways, considering its just a story of your life and experiences) but other than that RELAX and enjoy it. My interviewers were so nice and really just wanted to get to know me. There were no tricks or "hard" questions. Hope this helps a bit. Good luck :)

I interviewed January 18th and nothing yet either way. I haven't heard from any other Idaho residents. Have you?

So, in previous years threads there seemed to be a nice handful of people accepted between December and February. I wonder why not the case this year?
|
Interesting how quiet this thread is...Interviewed here in January but have not heard anything. Guess they were being honest when they said don't expect anything until March...

Very quiet! I have been checking this thread and the UofU portal at least 5 times a day. First thing when I wake up. Right before bed. I'm dying to hear more. I interviewed on Oct 28th. I'm in state. A guy I work with interviewed in Nov and got rejected last month. I have also heard of two others that interviewed the same day as me who were rejected. No news is good news at this point I guess.
|
Anyone know how often the Idaho committee meets to discuss applicants? We are getting down to the end of the cycle for Utah here at least for interviews because they said decisions are mailed out in March for most folks.
|
Anyone else get an email about financial aid?
|
I got the same email, made my heart skip a beat even though I knew they don't send email notifications. I guess that means I don't have a rejection already in the mail, but that is all that can be gleaned from it status-wise.
|
Lol I didn't wanna be the first one to post about getting that same email cuz I've been super neurotic all season every time I get an email I get excited
I don't recall getting one last year and I got rejected so maybe a good sign  I'm sure everyone got it haha |
I got the same financial aid email and my interview isn't for a few weeks. I think they just sent it to everyone that interviewed, no matter the status

I know it sucks, I was there twice, but just be patient until the end of the first week of April. |
Interviewed on 3-Feb, now playing the waiting game with the rest of us all...
Does anyone have any info on how many applicants were offered spots last year? This would include the 82 seats plus those that turned down for other schools. Just curious. |
Idaho
I was wondering it anyone has any information on Idaho applicants? I can not find any information!!! How many apply? How many interview? And how many are typically accepted in a cycle? Thanks!
|
Quote:
This is all general estimates. Second time applicant here but I'll be dropping my spot if I get accepted :) |

Does anyone know if our online status will change if/when we get rejected?
Also, for any current students - People had a lot to say about the mandatory attendance rule that was implemented. The students I talked to during my interview seemed to take it in stride. Is there still any ill will towards administration over this? Just curious. |
Quote:
The fact is attendance is mandatory, and if that is a deterrent to you it should be factored in to your decision to attend here. |

Most rejections did not find out by online portal. I do not believe waitlisters found out this way, though some waitlisters were asked to submit to the background check. Typically the last step led to admission. The official method is postal mail, but probably 50% of people found out by online portal. Though, some who received letters did not have a change in portal status for a week or so after getting the letter. In short....who knows...going to be an interesting ride starting March 15. Good luck to you. |
Hey all! Out of curiosity does anyone know the lecture time for MS1? I remember at the interview one of the student ambassadors said it was in the morning only but I cant remember the times?

Attached a document sent to all classes today from our new dean that may be of interest to those applying.
Good luck! |
thats a great info sheet, thanks for sharing. Knowing a few OOS have already been accepted, its good (and a little depressing) to know there are about 250 interviewed OOS competing for about 10 spots. Sure makes you wish they increased the class size now instead of later.
|
Anyone else excited that March is finally here! Bring on the good news baby!
|
I'm excited for you guys! Best of luck to all. :luck:
Once more people get acceptances, we can start our class thread :) |
