Those two don't sound German. I've never heard them before.

How are you at least 1/2 German if you know the other half is Mexican/Spanish? (which I love; totally fell in love with the Mexicans)

And I love to sing too! Newest obsession is making sure I'm alone in the elevator, because the acoustics are awesome in there. I live to sing in elevators. But I'm not good enough to be heard by others. Although I do like singing when I go grocery shopping.

It sounds more like it comes from east Europe, but I have no clue to be honest. Haha

My grandmother on my dad's side and all her family are full-blooded German. I'm not sure what her last name was, but her first name was Alpha. I do have some on my mom's side as well. I don't speak the language since Alpha died before I was born and never taught me (which I think she wanted to do). I'm also, according to my mother, part Native American, though don't ask me what tribe cuz I have NO idea whatsoever. I'm still trying to figure out if its true or not...

My last name is not German, I will admit. I think its more English or Irish (so I've been told...).

OH Bunny Girl 04-01-2012 06:33 AM

Now that this thread has turned to last names, lol, mine is Czech, and all those with my last name are most likely related to me. I googled it, and when I graduate with my DVM I will be the first Dr. in my family ever. And I'm actually really proud of that.

So, has anyone heard of vets who have one Dr. Maiden Last Name as their professional title, but then keep their married name for their private/family life? Thoughts?

Sure! That's definitely doable. Especially if you become a Dr. before you get married. I'm pretty sure you can do whatever you want in that regard.

I work with a lady that uses her maiden name at work and uses her maiden name-her hubbys name IRL.

My last name is a boy's first name and I worry that client will read it and expect a boy. But my last name is 5 letters and my Bf's is 11 so switching would kindof stink. Also his last name is VERY irish sounding, which would be cool on St. Patty's day, but maybe not so much the rest of the year.

I worked with a girl whose last name was Krystovschzeck IRL. Noone could pronounce it. I think chzeck last names tend to get butchered the most.

Yep, one of the vets I know just got married 2 years ago, but has been practicing for 5 years. She is Dr. Brown (her maiden name) but she introduces herself as Mrs. (husband's last name) outside of work. I think I'm going to do the same since I'll have my DVM before I get married.

Awesome, thanks! I don't know how the bf will take it, but oh well. I will keep my weird, constantly butchered last name :)

That's what I'll be doing. When I get married i'll hyphenate last names, but my professional name will just be dr. Maiden name.

I love Backyard Diva on facebook! She has so many awesome ideas for your yard and I am excited to do some of that once I get my house! I've always hated working in the yard, but some of her ideas are awesome!

I went from sounding very Irish to sounding very Hispanic after marriage... I'm neither. I'm mostly Yugoslavian... or whatever country that would actually be now. And I look white.

fromthebox 04-01-2012 10:39 AM

I would trade English and hard to pronounce for Irish if the BF and I got hitched. Hoban isn't a terrible name to take..

Chebanse 04-01-2012 10:46 AM

I really like my last name. I want to keep it, but I will actually feel a little bad (probably dumb, I know). Part of the problem is that I have a knack for dating guys with really generic last names (Miller, Harris, etc.). My boyfriend's last name is Wagner, which I really like, but it is a little generic (no offense to all of you Wagners out there!!!). At least I would still have the same last initial :D

Feeling a little guilty....

So my boyfriend and I thought it would be a little funny to announce of facebook that we are engaged as an April Fools Day joke mainly because a few of his friends have been bugging him about when he is going to propose (we've been together for over 2 years) and also because my parents have been bugging us about it. We thought that a lot of people would figure out that it was a joke because of April Fools Day, but apparently only 2 out of maybe 60 people so far have realized it was a joke. My sister and parents called me frantically this afternoon completely confused and even after I said "Happy April Fools Day" were completely confused, resulting in a long conversation. Even my best friend of 16 years thought it was real. So now I am feeling a little guilty...

The ironic part is that my boyfriend and I are actually in the process of looking for engagement rings and we think we found the perfect ring yesterday. He, of course, didn't buy it yet, because we want to wait until I am done grad school in July and we have figure out a payment system first.

Has anyone ever done something like this? Have you gotten mixed reactions?

I am super obsessed with Dance Moms.

And I walk around my house (and sometimes even in public) saying "mew!" My cat (who is almost 3 years old) does not meow--he still mews like a kitten. I think it's the cutest thing, and for some reason I like to remind myself of it. Often. Like every half hour or so, I mew. It's super weird. I think I need to stop. (But really, he is so freaking cute! What 3 year old cat mews???)

Me too! I already told my boyfriend that I want a miniature horse and chickens. Dogs of course, not even a question. A parrot for him. Guide dogs in training. I also made him promise me to get me a foal for vet school graduation. But I need one to ride, so I also need a grown horse. And cows, because they're cute. I'd also like to have goats and pet rats.

bigkittinteef 04-02-2012 01:58 AM

My guilty pleasures:
1) Goat cheese. I eat about 2 costco sized logs of it a week. I cook it with just about everything. *drool
2) Mad Men. Amazing show I fall asleep to every night. My bf and I have full on discussions about the characters and their motivations, etc. Dorky. I know.
3) Downton Abbey and Once Upon a Time. Two shows I recently became obsessed with while waiting for the new season of Mad Men to premiere.
4) Blaming farts on animals. I do this just like everyone else on SDN apparently, (except for you JMJ, lol!). I have so many unsuspecting pets. Who'd ever guess? muahaha

That's enough shame for now... ;)
