Do schools really Google you?

Always wondered this- does anyone know?

dentalprodigy 04-21-2012 08:44 AM

they can...but think about it, they don't have time 2 do that4 every applicant.besides most pre dental students aren't that interesting to waste time googling them

I doubt a school would search every applicant just to see what would come
up, but I wouldn't put it past an interviewer if they have your file beforehand or other faculty/staff that might review files.

I won't give details of the story since I don't have his permission, but I recently heard a classmate's story from one of his interviews. The interviewer saw something interesting in his statement/application and did some searching. He pulled it up during the interview. It wasn't a terrible thing and he still got accepted at that school, but it certainly was not something he expected to face in his interview.

I think schools would only do this if you made yourself sound like a big person, saying you're famous, the chair of some big organization, or if you've published any papers.

They will definitely google, facebook, or twitter you once they select who they would like to invite for an interview.

budentite 05-06-2012 03:27 PM

they might google you, but about half of schools now require a background check.

simple... GOOGLE yourself.. can you find any incriminating information?? If not.. you're golden. If you do.. well shoot.

goffdent 05-07-2012 08:42 PM

My pre dental society invited a guest speaker who reviews applications at the dental school in Arizona, and he stated that he googles the people that he's planning on interviewing/accepting.

I'm just curious of what some red flags are if they scan your facebook or something. I guess it helps hid your facebook from google search from the settings page, and only allow friends to see most of your content.

writing90 05-08-2012 12:21 AM

Thank for sharing.I don't much know.

dantemac 05-08-2012 01:42 PM

No school gave me the vibe they googled me. Most interviewers forgot where I went to school or what my personal statement said. They are there to ask generic questions and get sincere answers from you, not to take a glance at your web search results.

Cofo 05-09-2012 01:47 PM

If they googled me, they would know I was a gay porn star in who died in 2007.
...not. even. kidding.
maybe it'll put the adcoms in a randy mood though and subconsciously provoke them to send me an interview invite.

SnowyRox 05-09-2012 01:54 PM

Your interviewers might (especially the student interviewer) if they see something interesting in your application. Make sure you don't post anything incriminating online and you'll be fine. Hide your FB profile from public views and take down any pictures that you wouldn't print and show your grandmother. Revealing clothes, drunken shots, anything showing bad judgment.

dantemac 05-09-2012 03:00 PM

Yeah, I agree. The most you can do is make your facebook completely private. No strangers should have a look.

Wicked Sin 05-10-2012 01:50 AM

There are probably thousands of people with the same name as you, Good luck trying to find anything on google lulz.

Set your facebook on private and only show to friends.

I don't twitter nothing interesting in my life to twitter about.

There, you're pretty much set from any scrutiny.
