This is a pretty specific question, but I was wondering if anyone could speculate as to which school has the stronger California rotation sites, AZCOM or Touro-Ca.

I very much want to do my rotations in California. I was accepted to AZCOM and was given my 1st choice of Los Angeles for my core rotation sites (for those that don't know, AZCOM assigns your rotation site as soon as you are accepted).

However, I also was accepted to Touro-Ca and considering that it is a California school, they obviously have the bulk of their rotation sites in California.

Anyhow, I was wondering if anyone could compare the relative strength of the California rotations at these 2 schools. Thanks.

if you can find out where the touro-ca rotations are, you could compare the list of rotating hospitals of the two schools. not sure if that helps you out much but just a suggestion...

I don't know about Touro but AZCOM has very strong LA rotation sites. You can't go wrong with them in that regard.

I'd speculate AZCOM. I know touro has been working hard to make enough CA spots available for its students, but from what a recent grad has told me, it is still a hassle to get all CA spots and some of the spots are pretty craptastic. Thought the OOS, and particularly the MI spots, are supposed to be amazing.

Actually, I'd speculate Touro has better spots, worse spots, and no spots, depending on how the lottery treats you, whereas AZCOM has decent spots but definitely enough spots.

What hospitals are available for the AZCOM Los Angeles rotations?

Here is a list of their current LA rotation sites.

So based on that list....how would you rank the quality of their California rotations? Better than Touro?

Once again, those are all great hospitals. I've been to almost all of them. Long Beach Memorial? Are you kidding? That's a HUGE trauma center that gets patients shipped in from all over the place. You are extremely lucky if you get to rotate there.

I wonder if anyone has a list of Touro's hospitals in Los Angeles. These are some pretty big name hospitals. I've heard some great things from doctors and nurses about Henry Mayo, Los Alamitos, and Lakewood Regional.

Does anyone know how hard it is to get assigned the Los Angeles rotations if you get accepted into AZCOM?

I worked in the Los Alamitos/Lakewood ER.
I volunteered in the Fountain Valley ER.
My brother was born at St. Mary's.
My friend's life was saved at LBMMC (Long Beach Memorial) after he got into a major car accident and he was taken to their trauma center.

Coming back to these places as a rotating medical student would be SO cool.

You don't get them assigned to you, you ask for them. Everyone I know personally got their top choice rotations for 3rd year, as did many people on this board. I think most schools (MD or DO) assign you rotation sites or do some kind of lottery system after you make a preference. It's one of the reasons I chose AZCOM. And you're right, after that history, those hospitals probably look really good to you. I'd be excited to do LA, too, if I were you.

What'd you do at Lakewood and los Alamitos? Nurse? Scribe?

EMT actually! (I worked at both places for a very short period of time). You are correct though, all the Scribes+most of the ED doctors and a few of the nurses work in both EDs.

Hey OP, I never post anything on SDN, but I figured I should give my 2 cents on AZCOM since I'm currently a 3rd year and I have went through the process. Many California students have asked me about rotations for AZCOM and I tell them that setting up rotations are great if you put the effort in setting them up. I don't know how Touro is in terms of rotations, but I know that they and Western University have many affiliated contracts with hospitals in California (ie: Pacific Hospital of LB, Arrowhead Regional, Riverside Community Hospital, Chino Valley Med Cntr, Pomona Valley Med Cntr, Downey Regional Med Cntr, etc), which is good if you want to stay in the area, BUT bad if you are a person like me that likes to jump around and get only the best hospitals.

During my 3rd year, I had the opportunity to work at the following hospitals

Fountain Valley Regional Medical Center in Fountain Valley, CA
Newport Bay Hospital in Newport, CA
Anaheim West Medical Center in Anaheim, CA
Scripps Green Hospital in La Jolla, CA
Botsford General Hospital in Farmington Hills, CA
Pacific Hospital of Long Beach in Long Beach, CA
Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton, CA
Phoenix Children's Hospital in Phoenix, AZ
Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in Sierra Vista, AZ

Because LA Rotations for AZCOM only started in 2010, there is a lot of flexibility for you to CREATE your schedule. By proactively going out and calling hospitals, you can create your own schedule, and AZCOM will be OK with it because they don't have many contracts to begin with. As for 4th year, you can create your ENTIRE schedule at ANY hospital.

Thanks for the very timely response. I'm positive it will make OP's decision an easy one.

Yeah, that looks lovely. Wouldn't mind chillin' with Snoop in the LBC.

I mean, hanging out in Long Beach between rotations at Pacific.

Assuming that no one stats at one hospital for any length of time how do you guys find places to live while rotating through ask these rotation sites?

i know some people just look for short-term leases/craigslist. however my guess is most people doing the LA track at AZCOM came from LA, so they just live at home and drive.

I don't know how other schools work, but at my school, which is not touro or azcom, students are provided with free housing for a month. The housing varies a lot. You may be sharing a dorm room with another medical student or you may get a townhouse to yourself. Neverthess, the housing is always free, clean, and has Internet.

what school do you attend?

Touro-CA also sends students to Pacific Hospital of Long Beach and Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, as well as Chino Valley Medical Center for third year core rotations.
