Also, I was told by an a gentleman on the admissions committee that they look for diversity in applicants. Then he said something like "we don't want everyone thinking the same way".
So if you've got something unique about you, play it up in your personal statement. VMRCVM doesn't have additional essays on their supplemental app, so your personal statement is one of your only chances to stand out in a way beyond grades, stats etc...
For what it's worth, I don't have any research experience, but I do have a good GPA and I'm a very non traditional applicant.
