The professors in the programs you apply to could probably answer most of these questions. I don't
think that you can use a school counseling degree in a private setting. It probably depends on the licensing process in NY. Do they license school counselors separately from LPC/MFT, etc? If that is the case then the school counseling license probably doesn't work for private practice.
In my state a regular mental health counselor (LPC) or LCSW
can be a school counselor, no special degree is needed, though I think you do have to take some required state tests.
