Just because the connection is "inherently insecure" doesn't really mean anything. If you were to decide to do internet shopping while your there(or access any modern website that requires you to login) your information will be going over a secure connection on top of that "inherently insecure" wifi connection. Your personal data isn't going to be at increased risk.
So security would be one of the last reasons I would ever suggest someone an ipad with a 3g/4g connection.
