But I am sure the connections play some role, although they may not play a major factor. For example, the Program Directors at all of the UCs/Stanford/USC probably know many of the faculty at their own as well as the other schools, and, in the eyes of a PD, an outstanding letter from someone you know well professionally would be a bonus to one's application.

For example, during my interview at Mt. Sinai, a 4th year med student who had completed his residency interviews said the Mt. Sinai name has a strong reputation in the northeast, but probably less in other areas. Certainly some schools, like in nevercold's case, Duke, carry a lot of weight no matter where you're applying, but for most schools it seems that regionality matters. I don't think the region of one's school alone would significantly hurt one's chances at matching in another location, but it would be an added benefit for many schools (aside from the schools like Yale, Hopkins, etc. whose graduates would stand out automatically).

some programs may assume that you wouldn't want to relocate to their area if it's far from where you are currently living, or is in a place some see as less desirable. If you make it clear to them that you are really willing to move there, it's not a problem. (e.g.. - I have a lot of family here in Wyoming/Indiana/Mississippi/etc...I've always wanted to live in the midwest....I was really impressed with what I've heard about your program and this seems like a great area to live...you get the idea).

I think the really important point some people forget is that each class is different in what the students want. It's not like everyone wants a competitive specialty!

But, isn't that what makes it competitive?

i agree that not everyone wants to go into a competitive specialty. i'm an internal medicine resident, went to michigan for med school. however, my point was that primary care, especially family medicine, was not very popular with this class. there are a good number of people going into internal medicine, however, you can bet that most of them plan on doing a fellowship.

No, you can't match into it. He's an MD/MBA, and set it up through Tuck. I don't know the branch.

Pre-meds, you give way too much importance to matchlists. Location of the residency for most applicants is a lot more important than prestige of the program, and the fact that a school is a big name among medschools doesn't mean that their residency program in any particular specialty is anywhere near as prestigious and hard to match into. I just wanted to know what you thought of this list from a DO school. How do these numbers compare to the MD school matches?

150 total (about 66% is in IM/FM/Peds/psych/OB/GYN)

Just from that list you cant compare anything. Comparing list is actually useless as it just tells you what people at that school were interested in that year. We had several AOA 260s board score ppl go into family practice. They probably could have done anything competitive but wanted to raise a family, want a chill lifestyle and wanted good location. They disliked the hours in surgery and wasnt interested in things like derm because they felt like it wasnt the type of medicine they wanted to practice as the 'majority' of derm patients arent seriously "ill". I first I thought it was such a waste but actually primary care needs smart ppl so..... of course she had top choice of which family program she wanted.

My point, comparing match lists dont mean anything, especially if its just a list of how many ppl went into what field......
