VCOM (Carolina) Discussion Thread 2011-2012

Good luck from those of us in the inaugural Class of 2015 to the Class of 2016 applicants!

Just received email from VCOM stating they are reviewing my primary. Does anyone know the turn around for receiving invite for supplemental?

I received my secondary application the same day as VCOM received my AACOMAS (primary) application. However, it may still be a little early for them to be sending a secondary out if you did not apply for early decision. Keep in mind that VCOM is selective towards applications from the region. Interviews are also more selective as VCOM only interviews 500-600 students for the class of 150 out of thousands of applications that they receive. If you receive an interview, you probably have at least a 25% chance of acceptance, so getting an interview is an accomplishment in itself.

Yeah, I interviewed this week and I'm not early decision, but I think this is the first week of regular decision interviews so it's still really early in their cycle.

For all of those that received an interview, what was the turn around from receiving that invitation from when you application was complete? Trying to form a time table that's all. Thanks.

I interview tomorrow! Wondered around Spartanburg today, I love it. Any words of advice from those who interviewed already?

I'm not sure of the exact day count, but I know that I had only submitted my application approximately a week before they called me to interview.

Congrats! My biggest advice is to relax. The faculty there at the school are really awesome! The interviews are extremely laid back. I would advise you to have a good understanding of the difference between osteopathic and allopathic & why you want to go into osteopathic med. as everyone I interviewed with asked me those questions.

A little over two weeks for me: Complete on 8/19. Interview invite on 9/6.

Does VCOM have a student host program? I am scheduled to interview on 10/11 and wouldn't mind hooking up with a current student the day/evening prior. I'm trying to let medical school, not the application process, bankrupt me.

does VCOM accept deferred admission requests? If so, is this easy to do?

Got the call this morning for an interview on Dec 5th. This is by far and away my top choice of ANY med school,so I was pretty darn happy when they called. Here's hoping that I can join the ranks of those of you who are already accepted.

I'm not sure on VCOM's policy for deferred admissions. It's probably best to give Mattie a call in Admissions, I'm sure she'd be willing to answer any questions that you have!

I would like to point out that both GPAs are signifacantly higher if you remove my freshmen year (both around 3.6). This was bc I transfered to another school and started to work harder in my studies. My MCAT is low at a 22 but I am retaking it in Aug. You are borderline at best with those stats. If your GPA was higher, then it might off set your low MCAT. But, schools don't just look at the numbers. Right a killer personal statement, don't make excuses for your low grades freshman year, but be sure to highlight the fact that your grades increased because of your maturity and strong work ethic. VCOM-Carolinas Class of 2015 had an average cGPA of 3.61 and an average sGPA of 3.55. You're in the ballpark--about a tenth of a point away from the averages.

I just saw the MCAT of 22. VCOM-Carolinas has an average of 25O--again, you're below average, but in the ballpark.

The group is now set to open meaning that anyone "should be able to" see the group and who is in it. If this is not the case please let me know. Either way, to make it easier to find, the groups name is now set to "VCOM Class of 2016: Carolinas Campus." If anyone still has trouble, please do not hesitate to contact me. I interviewed with VCOM and I was just wondering, if I were to be accepted do I have the option for delayed admission? Do all schools typically offer delayed admissions? Thanks.

I got the call this morning, ACCEPTED to the class of 2016! I'm hoping you guys and girl that I interviewed with got in too!

I am a first year. Last I heard 138 applicants had submitted non-refundable deposits. (people usually don't back out and lose $1,500). Offers were out on 20-25 students with 1 or 2 weeks to respond (the time is short for response now). I think some interviews are lined up. I think the class was filled as of late March/Early April last year with wait lists filling in beginning from May through early July (not many though).

Good luck if you are still in the process. I know it is grueling, but as far as medical school goes it's just the first step.

Actually according to Mattie, director of admissions, last year 29 people got off the wait list of 70, mostly people from high tier...

138 have paid, 14 acceptances are out pending deposit being paid and people are withdrawing as well as 2 people did on Monday and lost their money and more may do so if they get into a state school or another school...class size is 162 and the wait list has begun...

ACTUALLY FuturePharm21 that information was according to Mattie the other day (ya know, from someone actually at the school). As I stated, 138 have paid. There are probably less offers out as of today compared to a day or two ago (as people have probably replied); and 29 out of 70 off the wait list is true, but compared to other schools in SC it is not that many.

waiting for a phone call allday today but no luck anybody

Interviewed 3/19 and fell in love with the school. The campus was beautiful and everyone there was really friendly. I talked to Mattie today and found out i'm on the high tier waitlist. Hopefully a seat opens up cause this schools definitely my top choice.

Does anybody know when they plan on ranking their waitlist?

I interviewed 4/10 and they said it would take 1-2 weeks. Its been one week so Im waiting for the news as well.

I interviewed a week before you. Sounds like they are working on it now... Should have ranking ready next week...

How do you guys like this school? Im thinking about applying this summer. I actually grew up less than 5 minutes from the school, which is good but bad at the same time.

Depends on several things.

1. GPA breakdown (science vs nonscience)
2. MCAT breakdown
----------------------------------------------------------------
3. Clinical experience/shadowing
4. Volunteer work
5. Extracurriculars
6. Your ability to convince them that you not only really want to attend their school, but also that you have a genuine interest in osteopathic medicine.

Basically, if the items above the dotted line are on the lower end of competitive, then everything below the dotted line needs to be awesome. I would say "and vice versa," but that's not necessarily true for VCOM. If the things on the bottom don't look good, then there's no way you're going to get accepted to this school no matter how good your grades are.

I interviewed last Month and I was on the waitlist. Yesterday I got a call for a seat, I wassssssssss supppppppeerrrr happy. Class of 2016.

I interviewed almost 2 months ago and was told that I was in the top tier of the wait list. I am just curious to know what they told you if you don't mind. This is my number one choice, and I would move there tomorrow if they called me! I am trying to be patient, so any help would be much appreciated. I am still waiting like a few others to hear where I actually am on the wait list, but am too scared to contact them too soon...I don't want to push my luck!

Today, Mattie said they haven't even ranked the wait list yet. I'm guessing you were accepted pending seat availability and not wait-listed??

I called last week and was told it would be done this week... Called this week and now they are saying next week
