I have noticed that some residency positions for preventative medicine require 3 years of PGY training, while some require only a transitional year. Which is more common?

Sample 3 years reqd: Mayo

sample 1 year reqd: Hopkins

The Mayo program is a *fellowship* not a residency, hence the requirement to be BE/BC with a completed residency.

If you want to do a Preventive Med *residency* then most only require a TY or Prelim IM year.

Is there any difference in job opportunities for each choice?

Yes. The person who does it as a fellowship will also be a BE/BC internist and can work either in Primary Care or hospitalist work (plus all the other options available for a general internist) as well as Prev Med. The person who does a PM residency can only do Prev Med.

That said, most people who do Prev Med do it because they want little/no clinical interaction although this is not a universal truth.
