SDN Members don't see this ad. (About Ads)
I am a nontrad returning to school and I just made it through my first week... and actually enjoyed it! I'm looking forward to the rest of the semester, even though Physics is sort of giving me a hard time (the textbook is crap and the professor's lectures aren't very helpful).

I also got my first three hours of vet experience in 7 years, at the ADDL watching the vet students and interns cut up three dogs and a cow fetus to determine cause of death. I don't like the smell and I was slightly squeamish at first, but by the end I was okay. I want to get at least 20 or so hours there since I am looking at pathology for my career path, but I also think it might get boring shadowing there after a while.

My boyfriend and I broke up almost 2 months ago and we are locked into a lease together. I haven't found anyone to sublease for me but I did finally find a place that I can sublease for $1000 for the next four months and I am moving in there on Tuesday. I'm pretty happy! We get along okay most of the time, but I think it's just time to move on.

Lastly, I have a job interview on Wednesday after classes to go work on a horse drawn farm taking care of the animals.

Mini rave for feeling like my life is finally falling into place

I'm at my first-choice veterinary school, living in a city that I love, with classmates who are ah-mazing. I was sure that as we got into the thick of things last semester there would be drama and competitiveness and I just really haven't seen any of that and I am so so thankful.

I have a wonderful, happy, new puppy who is finally becoming better at house training and is just the sweetest thing. I've got a great fiance. I've got a kick ass 120G saltwater tank in our apt (thanks to my great fiance).

I managed to snag an excellent on campus (but work from home), part time job editing scientific manuscripts and grants for a lab that works in a field I have no experience in (radiology - they are designing newer and better ways to do MRIs) that wants to hire me to do research with them in the summer if I am not doing anything else. I've applied for an amazing internship this summer in a field I want to work in after school, and actually got to talk to the woman who will be doing the hiring when she came to Penn to give a talk on summer opportunities - she seemed really excited and told me to send her my resume directly . Ugh! I just love being at Penn. I love the opportunities that it is providing me. I'm so happy being where I am right now. Even studying for a physio exam next week doesn't seem so bad.

I live a good life.

also I like these smilies: ... poor banana man.

I'm such a Sheldon fan. Parsons just does such an amazing job with that character, he certainly deserves it.

Me too! I love the show, but he's one of the main reasons.

I'm very happy for you, GBella!! I'm sort of experiencing the same lately and I earnestly hope it only gets better from here. Looking at your RAVE post, I'm sure it will I adore these smilies (I've been adding more of them in my non SDN posts in texts, facebook posts etc)

I'm taking metabolism (aka biochem II) right now and I'm so excited for the class. This professor rocks.

I'm the president of the pre-health organization on campus, and the pre-med kids (aka 99% of the organization) were wanting an MCAT review session to get to know the style of questions on the test. I've taken the MCAT (Mizzou accepts both MCAT and GRE and I wasn't sure what I wanted to do medicine-wise), didn't do terribly well, but I didn't do awful waffle either. Anyway, no one else who's taken it is interested in running it. Normally this would be a rant, but I do enjoy teaching, so I'm excited to go through some problems and maybe learn something myself.

I called the admissions office today, and they finally received my last transcript! I was starting to get worried because I asked them a week and a half after it was sent, and they hadn't received it then. Now I'm just waiting on more recommendation and I'm finally officially done with the application itself.

Default So, I already ranted today... here's my rave.

My (fabulous) veterinarian just offered to babysit FAILCat at the clinic while I am traveling for interviews... thus saving me a tremendous amount of money (it was looking like he'd potentially have to board at the $pecialty clinic) and enabling me to not have to spend the entire time hoping the boarding facility hasn't killed him. (I might be just a teensy bit neurotic where this cat is concerned. )

Have I mentioned how much I love this woman? Because I do.

I have a meeting tomorrow morning to discuss my recent data...once I can get some solid stats my 1st author paper can be written. I registered for the Broad St Run this past weekend and ran 3.5 miles today....farthest yet! And finally I just received an email from a tutoring program that I wanted to volunteer for about information sessions! I love living in Philadelphia but this is city with a lot of problems. I've heard some really positive feedback about this program.
I finally have a lot of free time on my hands (outside of work) and running and tutoring are exactly how I want to spend it!

A very small victory: For the first time in my life, I am doing organic chemistry practice problems and getting them right. I hope this carries over to the tests.

I really struggled with the first half of this class. The professor went too fast and I didn't have enough time to devote to it, and all the mechanisms were ridiculous (it never helped that the reagents/solvents she showed in class weren't the same ones used in the practice problems, which were different from the ones in the textbook which were different from the ones on the tests). We have a different prof this semester, who is much clearer and goes much slower. I have been mentally drilling this semester's work into my head in hopes of coming out of this class with a decent grade.

Ya know, just when I throw my hands into the air and claim defeat to all things veterinary, this happens: I got an email today inviting me to write a BOOK CHAPTER!! I was so shocked I had to read it three times!!

'They' would like me to write about the fundamentals of working with animals suffering from neurodegeneration. The book will be used both professionally and educationally to train people in lab animal science - investigators and veterinarians alike.

This is gonna take a while to sink in...

Got my parking ticket dismissed by the Philly Parking Authority.

Of course, I never should have gotten it in the first place, and had to wait almost 3 hours to contest it, but at least a little sunlight!

Too cute, breenie! My cat plays with stuffed toys too. And occasionally chews on rawhide. I keep expecting him to start barking.

Best of luck, Coquette!! I'm so jealous! My 2nd half was miserable cause of my prof (and the concepts were like 3 levels above 1st half to me..). I had the same one 1st half and she was fine but 2nd half, her evil twin must have taught it. I considered withdrawing but, I managed to pull off a low B.....*sigh*

Congradulations LMMS!

One of the better proffessors at my school got tenure; so, to celebrate some of the other proffessors brought a bunch of streamers and balloons and we totally filled his office with them; it was a pretty fun time for work study.

Haha, thanks LMMS. Vet behaviorists do exactly what they sound like they do. They use veterinary medicine to treat and aid in behavioral issues, such as anxiety, fear-based aggression, dog-dog conflict, etc. So you go into a vet behaviorist with a dog that is not thriving. She is anxious all of the time and cries for hours when you leave. Severe case of separation anxiety. The vet behaviorist will instruct you on how to best manage this issue, as well as provide medication (depending on the case) to resolve any biochemical issues that are going on. It's basically a combination of dog training and vet medicine, without all the "sit!"

FAILCat's just a pseudonym... my lame attempt at maintaining some semblance of anonymity, as said cat factored heavily into my personal statement. His real name's Thomas.

The moniker's a nod to T's status as the feline embodiment of Murphy's Law. Cat's got a medical record that reads like a copy of War and Peace.

Today marks five years since a dear friend of mine passed away due to a car accident. Why is this a rave? Because her life, though just 17 years long, was full and rich and beautiful. She touched so many peoples' hearts in her short time with us and her legacy is one of hope, love, and kindness. I was so lucky to get to know her for the five years we were friends, and she will never be forgotten <3

After spending 11 looong hours at school, I came home to a clean house, dinner on the stove, and ice cream in the freezer. I have the best husband EVER!

My big box of blueberries sat too long and got mushy. But they will still taste delicious in an upside-down cake, I'm excited. Yum!

Wow, nice! I don't have a husband. I wish my dogs would do something like that. Welllll, then again, maybe not. I don't think I'd want to eat what they would prepare.

Unless it's canned (canine) W/D, for some reason that stuff always smells good.
I don't think I've ever told anyone that before.

Her husband rocks

And agreed about the dogs. Mine would probably drag in some half dead thing from outside and be absolutely thrilled with themselves.

I think I always found the a/d least offensive... can't speak to the taste, though!

The grayness and weird texture of canine k/d scares me a little.

All I know is that S/D has the same consistency as a can of that gelatin/cranberry slab in a can that some people use for thanksgiving dinner... ick.

Hey, now... I love the cranberry-slab-in-a-can!

Gelatinous meats, not so much.
