scary...
and so it goes with the never-ending flow of natural disasters that we gape at for a while and then just add on to the long list to forget about because they don't affect us.. in other news, coworkers need to stop spending so much time goofing off. i'm supposed to be doing tech work in back, but receptionists and kennel are hanging out in the office, so i take the case through, welcome at the door to history and procedures to payment and discharge instructions, all while setting up for boarding animals and juggling multiple phone lines because others have much more important things to look at online like who is dating who. it's a circus, but they are all immune, hidden in their own little world of exciting meaningless frivolities. I just don't get it, they're at work and on the clock! Last edited by thedogisgreen; 03-11-2011 at 12:11 AM. |

What part of Japan, Minnerbelle? I have friends over there and the ones that I have been able to talk to so far are saying that it seems like most of the damage from the tsunami/flooding was in the northeast, although other areas including Tokyo got gnarly earthquake damage. I'm quite worried for my friends there, too...
People I know in the Kansai area and Ehime prefecture say everything is fine there. My friends in Ehime didn't even know anything had happened until they saw the news. Hopefully we'll all get some contact from people over there soon.

Thanks guys,
All my family members live within an hour drive from Tokyo. I still haven't gotten the phone to go through so I don't have any details. I did get a very short email from my dad saying he was in Osaka so he's unaffected, and that my mom is fine. She was meeting up with my grandmother to go shopping (I think in Tokyo) when it happened, so I have no idea where they are. Trains have stopped, and aren't running anytime soon. That I guess leaves my 88 year old grandfather, who just had ankle surgery a few weeks ago, alone at my grandparents' house. They are very close to the shoreline, so that worries me a bit. That's about all I know - no info about anyone else. I'm guessing my mom will try to take my grandma home and make sure they're ok as soon as she can. I don't know when my parents will be able to get back to their home in Chiba, where my 2 cats are. I hope they're ok... I hope they aren't trapped anywhere, and that they at least have access to water. My younger sister just evacuated to avoid the tsunamis that will hopefully not be a big deal. |

I totally read this as "I hope your GPA is fine." I was like what on earth do tsunamis have to do with her GPA?
But seriously, minnerbelle, that is super scary and I too hope your grandpa and the rest of your family get through this unscathed. |

I really hope your family is alright. I woke up this morning to the news and have been crying on and off. I have so many friends in Japan and the only way I can contact them is through snail mail. I really hope they're ok.
Japan is just so close to my heart. People on the Oregon coast are freaking out about tsunamis but it's nothing compared to what's happening over there.EDIT: I found an email that might work! I sent off an email to my friend's family and hopefully I will hear back from them about my other friends. Last edited by withoutane; 03-11-2011 at 09:35 AM. |

Minnerbelle - my thoughts are with you and your family. And anyone else with loved ones/friends in Japan, know you are in my thoughts as well. Sadly, it's devastation such as this that moved me to work in public health and I will hope that the world reaches out to assist each and every victim.

I downloaded a free strobe light app for my phone because I thought it sounded cool. I made the mistake of looking at it for about 10 seconds, and when I looked away everything was all messed up. Tried to stand up to see if that would help me re-orient myself, and I got seriously lightheaded and dizzy and immediately sat back down and my heart was pounding and I was breathing really hard. I'm sure I freaked myself out which contributed to all that, but now that I've calmed down for a bit I'm still nauseous and a little bit dizzy and feel icky =(
Note to self: strobe light app =/= cool. |

it seems like all of my family members have been accounted for! it took my mom and gma 4 hrs to catch a cab (and i dunno how long a drive home it was to get through without highways) but gpa was fine. apparently it was shaking so hard they couldn't even stand, but the building was sturdy so not much damage other than merchandise being strewn everywhere. my dad got a rent a car in osaka and drove back home to chiba to check on my cats (just finally arrived after 22 hrs). they're doing okay as well. the house is a mess, but no major damage.
definitely not a consolation to those devastated by the quake/tsunami, but thank goodness the tsunami mostly swept over rural areas... because if it had hit tokyo/yokohama, it would have been much much worse. |

Glad your friends/family back in Japan are okay, Minnerbelle.
Question for younger pre-vets - do they not teach you as children anymore that the library is a generally quiet place? I mean a million years ago when I was a kid I was basically taught that not being quiet in the library meant you were going to get thrown out. But it seems like the undergrads here basically treat it like a coffee shop where they should come to have pretty loud conversations about whatever, particularly during finals week. I don't know if they think that just BEING in the library counts as studying or what... I don't really care if people are studying together and talking quietly or whatever but do you really need to have 4 people sitting at a 1 person cubicle watching youtube videos and giggling and talking about classmates?? Seriously you can't do that at home?? I hope they all fail out of school.

Everytime I see her I get the furthest spot available away from her. However, people seriously do need to get some computer etiquette at my school. Its kind of annoying whenever there is a line of people that need to use the computers and there are people sitting at them looking half asleep browsing facebook. Another situation that comes to mind is one of my least favorite pre-meds was over at one of the study desks during the what is always busiest time at our library and walks over after there was a line of about 7 or 8 people and asks if that is the line for the computers (because apparently people like to stand in lines by the computers for fun?) Then, he's like oh, my bad and walks over and shuts down the internet and logs off a computer that had been sitting empty at least the whole time I had been standing there (which was at least 15 minutes). ![]() In other news, I'm seriously not motivated to study for my Renaissance History test Monday. I was kind of excited for the class because I loved my art history class last semester, but this class is easily the most boring class I have ever taken. Its a two and a half hour class where he just goes over our homework assignments (which are quite lengthy) and asks us to rate the hotness of Renaissance philosophers Also, I found out this week that apparently I'm choking on my physiology tests which I kind of suspected, but I went over my test with my professor and I had a bunch of pictures drawn and labelled correctly to help answer the question, but I put down the wrong answers even after reading over the tests a couple of times before I turned it in. The professor was covering answers and asking me questions too, and I knew most of them. I'm really super mad at myself now because I think I psyched myself out too much because of everyone saying it was one of the hardest classes at our school material wise when I think I could of gotten about a 90 if I would of not freaked out instead of a low C. Also, I'm super worried about doing the same thing on the next test which will probably doesn't help. So, bye bye nice science gpa if I can't get myself calmed down. To make it worse, the professor that teaches if is probably the one who knows me the best at my school that I take classes with and he was one of the ones who I was planning on possibly asking for a LOR. |

Stupid St. Patrick's Day parade is a block from my house. People are throwing trash can lids in my yard to make sure they can park there. What if I wanted to park in front of my yard? There are so many cars along the side of the road that I can barely get in/out of my driveway and I have to be somewhere tomorrow and I'd like to not be blocked in! Stupid public streets, can't really do anything about it. I hope that when I get off of work tonight there is at least enough room for me to back into my driveway so I can get out tomorrow. Grumble grumble.

not really a rant, but . . . i'm making myself stay awake even though i'm really really tired and hopefully not getting sick, because i want to wait a full 2 hours after my cat has eaten to give him his meds. he's on clavamox and ursadiol in the PM, and it seems like he vomits about 10-15 minutes after getting them roughly every other administration. it makes me almost ill with worry to see all this food come back up after i've spent so much time coaxing him to eat.
BUT i am SO happy for minnerbelle and her family. my thoughts are definitely out there right now with all the people and families who've had their lives turned upside down. makes my minirant seem entirely insignificant. |

Thanks again for all the support everyone! I've finally been able to actually speak with my parents, so I feel much better. Things in the Tokyo area seems to be returning to some semblance of normalcy. The areas that were hit hard with the tsunami aren't as fortunate though... there are some towns where a vast majority of their residents are still unaccounted for. The whole nuclear radiation exposure thing is also really scary. I guess there isn't too much that can be done at this time to really change anything, but hopefully the recovery will be quick and effective.
(as for undergrads and libraries, we had the opposite prob at my college. the "must be silent because people are studying" extended to common spaces including the campus center! if i had a couple friends in my room on a friday night and we laughed a bit too hard, someone would ALWAYS come knocking on my door to shut us up. giggling in the campus center would elicit dirty looks and passive aggressive behavior) |

I hate group projects. I never seem to end up with a motivated group. We have a project due tomorrow, worth 40% of our grade for that class. We all agreed to have our rough drafts due last Monday. I was the only one who did. We agreed to have them done for today so we could meet up and write the group conclusions. Again, I was the only one who hand their part ready. The prof told the class on Friday (11th) that it's due Monday (14th), but he'll accept it without penalty until the 18th. Which means my group is going to drag their butt for another week, where I just want to get the damn thing done and handed in. I offered today that if everyone sent me their work, I'd write up the conclusions myself tonight and have it ready for tomorrow. "Oh, we wouldn't want to pawn the work off on you." Well someone has to do it!

I just got back from a conference, so I was waayyy to busy to use my laptop or watch the news. I found out about Japan like a minute before I departed. I caught a couple of clips on the news and a couple of stories in the paper today, and I'm finding it really difficult to watch the footage and read the stories. They showed a clip of a couple of people running out of a building and parts of the building are crashing to the ground and that scared me so much.
A couple of months ago, a friend showed me a video for an organization she volunteers with (can't remember what it's called, but helps single mothers in Sri Lanka who were devastated by tsunami... they make jewelery which gets sold in Canada)... anyway... she showed me a photo that her friend took while she was living there... it showed a beach, littered with debris. If you look close enough there are bodies among the debris. As soon as I saw the footage from Japan, I thought of that image... I can't even describe how I feel about the whole situation. My heart goes out to everyone affected by the quake. Last edited by 168135; 03-13-2011 at 04:46 PM. |

That's actually a really good idea IMO. Honestly, as long as the level of noise is consistent for me (i.e. everyone making noise or nobody making noise) it seems to be okay. It's when like, there's one little corner of noise and everyone else is quiet that it becomes a problem for me. I definitely have a filtering problem of some kind.

We have a 24 hour study area (which I am in right now) that is on the first floor. Unfortunately, they just put an Einstein bros store in here just this last year. It has very much affected the area and in a negative way. One, there is way more in and out traffic and noise from those people. Two, the freakin' noise the store makes with all their equiptment is way too much sometimes. Just a little bit ago the guy was running the slicer (that sounds like a D*MN jack hammer!). I was really trying to ignore it, but finally had to go tell him to please stop. Putting this store in the 24hour study area was the dumbest idea in the world! |

The Band's music fused many elements: primarily old country music and early rock and roll, though the rhythm section often was reminiscent of Stax or Motown, and Robertson cites Curtis Mayfield and the Staple Singers as major influences, resulting in a synthesis of many musical genres.

A pipe burst on the third floor of my building sometime over night. I have a leak in my bathroom ceiling and my entry way. Luckily nothing got wet that won't dry. I have no water now, the water's been shut off while they try to fix it and I have no idea how long that will take. I didn't get a shower this morning so I don't feel quite awake. Parents are only an hour out of the city, so might go stay with Dad if it isn't fixed by tonight.

I feel like death. Not long ago I was thinking to myself how I hadn't gotten sick in a long time. Then, last Monday, bam. Sore throat, fever, bleh. This weekend my sickness evolved into cold, fever and bleh. Spring break is NEXT week so I have to make it through this week before I can rest. I missed classes Tues-Thurs for my interview two weeks back so I had to catch up and then I missed Tuesday of last week because I couldn't imagine staying in class until 5pm. I feel awful now (despite a full dosage of Dayquil two hours ago? Where are you, relief?!) and none of the medicine I'm taking has ANY effect except Advil and I don't want to be popping Advil for days on end.
After my stat class from 2-3 I'm going to go home and go to bed

The only thing you can get from entering parental information is the health professionals student loan. Here's a website:
bhpr.hrsa.gov/dsa/s***/health_professions/bk1prt1.htm It's not the end of the world if you skip out on it, because it's not too likely that you would get much, but it's nice to have the extra bit of low interest subsidized loan moolah. Someone said you wouldn't be likely to get anything if your parents make over $100k, but I certainly have no proof of that, so it's just hearsay. ETA: Okay, seriously SDN? So, the three letters that have been turned into asterisks spell out the slang word for a cigarette, or a derogatory word for a homosexual. But, here, at a .gov site... just random. I took out the link so you can copy/paste without it being shortened. |

My mother is so ignorant.
I'm downright offended. Just because the reviews for the professor in a four-year university are 90% negative (complaining of too much work) and the ones for the same prof in the community college are more positive, DOES NOT f-ing mean that "oh, he must be easier on the community college kids". Ignorance KILLS, people. Jesus. Some of my CC classes have been WAY harder than anything I've taken here, or at the very least ON THE SAME LEVEL. Let me go bang my head into the wall. |

I was told that it might be worth it to apply if you can, if your parents make under $200k, because if you have any siblings who are also in college or graduate school (even if they're fully funded + stipend PhD students), their estimated contribution goes way down.
