Group description: Purpose: To enhance discussion about neonatology as a career and about careers involving neonatal intensive care among attendings, fellows, residents, medical students and premeds. Comparisons between specialty training in different pediatric fields is also appropriate. Postings within the group are not visible to non-members. Target membership: Neonatologists, neonatal fellows, pediatric residents, medical students and premedical students who are contemplating training in neonatology in the US or who are practicing in the US. Other medical specialties such as other pediatric specialists or OB that have an interest in neonatology education may join. However, the primary target is those with a potential interest in becoming US-trained neonatologists or pediatricians doing substantial amounts of neonatal care (moonlighting or hospitalists) as well as current neonatologists. Neonatal nurse practioners, RT, PT, OT, and dietitians may also join in, although these careers are not the primary focus of this group. Non-medical personnel should not join but post in the other SDN forums as appropriate. Target themes: Description of programs both in general and specifics including how the 3 years are divided, night call, etc. Discussion of research opportunities in neonatology for trainees. Discussion of family life and career pathways involving neonatology. Discussion of careers as an NNP, etc compared to a neonatologist or hospitalist. Some discussion of specific research topics may be included. Non-permitted themes of discussion: Any specific patient care issue that could be traced to an individual patient or circumstance. Details of medical management protocols (for this please go to 99nicu.org). Discussions of ethical issues in neonatology (please use the Topics in Healthcare or Sociopolitical forums of SDN for these). How to join: Apply as in the post below. If you are not an SDN member whose identity I otherwise know, please let me know in the submission box for membership your real first name, position, and your current institution. You are encouraged to provide your real first name in your posts, but may maintain on-line anonymity after providing your real first name, position and institution to the moderator. Moderator: Moderator is “oldbearprofessor” (OBP), a Professor of Pediatrics and attending neonatologist for over 15 years. I will not share your name and institution with the group. Other: This is a professional forum and all discussion must be appropriate for such a setting. If you wouldn't say it on sign-out rounds, don't say it here. If you want to join the forum then you need to go here to our Special Forums section. You will need to select the neonatology group and then click join now. You then have the join request line. Where you include your real name, position, and your current institution.
As OBP stated, you are encouraged to provide your real name in your posts, but may maintain on-line anonymity after providing your real name, position and institution to the moderator. Edit: Try this link...

I want to clarify that although most of the discussions are related to neonatal issues and neonatology as a career, those who are residents/fellows in other pedi areas or MS interested in other pedi specialties are welcome to join and contribute. Many related fields (e.g. pedi cards, developmental pedi) share research and career issues with neo and we value your contribution. Even future adolescent docs are welcome.

Modern neonatology has a short history, but a lot of great information and references to history can be found here. http://www.neonatology.org/tour/history.html http://www.neonatology.org/classics/default.html By the way, this is a good chance for me to update our group info. We currently have 59 members plus a substantial number of SDN advisors/mods who lurk but haven't bothered to join. Our membership includes a couple of folks who are interested in things like being NNP's, pharmacists, etc, so I'm going to add a bit about that as well. We've been working on adding sections covering areas of research of interest to neonatologists/pedi academics as well as info about matching in neo beginning in 2009.

If you really want to remain up-to date on what is happening in neonatology, consider subscribing to NICU-NET.
http://www.neonatology.org/nicu-net/join.html It is an old-style closed moderated listserv. They will confirm your ID before they allow you to post stuff to the list. |

We currently have over 400 members, including other attending pediatricians, several fellows and about to start fellows and a mix of residents, med students and pre-meds.
Our focus is entirely career-guidance, not patient-care related issues, lit review, ethics, etc. Those are best discussed elsewhere. Some threads about dealing with death and other such issues, but focused on how it relates to careers. We also have a discussion of what to eat when on-call. and Harry PotterAgain, the forum is open to all medical personnel with an interest in neonatology as a career, including NNP, RT's etc involved in the NICU setting. Very welcome also are fellows/attending in other pedi areas or those interested in academic pedi in general. Thanks for helping to make this community grow and thrive. Eventually I'd like to process the role such communities have in education (e.g. do they enhance career decision making, etc) and am open to ideas about that as well. is a thread that contains a long discussion about becoming a neonatologist and the pros and cons thereof. It is a good start for those who don't want to join the neonatology group (why?). I have deleted the "sticky" for it in order to simplify the pedi forum and decrease the number of stickies |

look for neonatology and then select "join group". Then fill in the space and you'll be set to discuss neonatology with us. Remember that SDN isn't really a place for middle school students, but many of us will be glad to answer your questions there. We were middle school students once and some of us have middle school kids. Speaking of which, if you happen to be one of my kids, just walk over and ask me your questions. ![]() just kidding... |

You will do this during your second year of pediatric residency. For now, you should be focused entirely on completing the USMLEs if you have not done so and obtaining a pediatric residency in the US. If you have already matched or signed into a US program for residency, there is nothing else you need to do now.

I have never heard of anyone not taking STEP 1 and both STEP 2s of the USMLEs (or osteopathic equivalent COMLEX) before applying for a fellowship, but don't know the specific rules on this. |
