Hey. I'm so depressed. I am on the verge of giving up now. I haven't heard from any places I have applied to! I was told that I will be able to make it at least somewhere with my GPA and profile. I don't know how long I should wait and hope till I start thinking of some back up options!

Before adding about 200k education + ~40k living expenses in debt to your current debt load, make sure you understand the economics of prosthodontic education. It's a good return on investment regardless but look at pros/cons of going to a school with high expenses.
J Am Dent Assoc. 2005 Aug;136(8):1154-62. Private practice and the economic rate of return for residency training as a prosthodontist. Nash KD, Pfeifer DL. Abstract BACKGROUND: The authors used survey data to estimate the economic rate of return from undertaking an investment in residency training to become a practicing prosthodontist. METHODS: The authors estimated earnings of practicing prosthodontists using results from a survey of 2500 U.S. prosthodontists. Survey data were used to assess the total costs of prosthodontic residency and earnings of practicing general practitioners. The authors applied statistical methods to estimate the internal rate of return (IRR) for prosthodontic residency training. RESULTS: The estimated IRR ranged from 8.23 percent for private practitioners with no financial assistance during residency training to 12.18 percent for full-time private practitioners with stipends and loans. Total costs of residency ranged from 271,835 dollars to 441,321 dollars, depending on the amount of forgone earnings, time in practice and how soon practice began after the residency. CONCLUSIONS: All of the estimates of IRR in this study were positive, indicating that prosthodontic residency is a financially attractive investment. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: The positive IRR for prosthodontic residency indicates that the demand for advanced education in prosthodontics will continue, and that the amount of time spent in practice increases the rate of return. |

The BU interview was very relaxed. Does anyone know when they send out acceptances? Is the job prospect in United States good after masters, for international dental graduates? Is it worth it to take a huge loan?

Many private practice prosthodontic patients tend to fit into a certain group. This patient population is usually fairly conservative, wealthy, and are older Caucasian people. This group will tend to favor spending $30k+ in an office they feel comfortable with with a doctor they feel comfortable with and feels they can communicate with well. This patient population will not mind if you are Indian, Arabic, Asian, or Latino... many actually will view this type of doctor very fondly... but they have to be exquisite at communicating at a very sophisticated level. Trust me, prosthodontic patients will test you. Now there are some exceptions to this. If you are Asian and practice in a very dense Asian community in a place like California or Latino and practice in a place like Miami, being more comfortable in your native language will be a huge success. I know many people in Miami who don't speak any English in their dental offices... ever. If you can learn how to communicate exceptionally well in residency, hone your skills, and move to an area that is tolerant of multi-national clinicians, I can assure you that you will do very well in a prosthodontic practice. |
