I tried a few hours ago also. But I was on it for an hour with the old design and all of a sudden it changed now. I like the colors but it's a lot harder to see which threads are read and which aren't. I thought it was much easier before..

You can change it back if you want. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and on the left side of the screen is a drop down menu that says SDN 2012. Select SDN classic and it will go back to how it was.

America's Nanny Dog - The Pit Bull
I thought this was interesting - and awesome! I hate what their image is now and it's cool to know that it hasn't always been that way. It makes em even more excited about getting one next year. |

I loved all those pit bull pictures and totally agree about the breed...so sweet and the happiest faces! Have you read, "The Pit Bull Placebo"? Great book that busts the myths of Pit Bulls and breed-specific legislature with great discussions of discrimination of different breeds throughout U.S. history.

PetPony-Yes. I think it was you I recommended it to before (cause you have a pit bull at your parents' house and thought she would be good with the Kids Reading to Dogs Program, right?) Anyway, I hope you can find the book on Amazon. It is obscure, but really needs to get out there to help the breed image. Let me know if you find it.

It is on there, but I didn't order it now. I might wait until I get Christmas money. ;) I did order three other books though which had good reviews and cost like $8 together.. They almost make me excited for next week's break to be over already, so I can get and read them. Hahaha. Only almost though. I am so ready for this break.

i thought this would be the best place to just sort of exhale. i'm not really ranting or raving. just breathing. i haven't been posting on here much because, well, i haven't heard ANYTHING from schools. I know it is still early, but it's disheartening to know that so many people have interviews or acceptances already. feeling a little bummed. and bored.... just waiting...

Thought we might discuss - a really in-depth look at some of the issues with bulldogs as a breed.

Something trematode may appreciate. This comic appeared on one of my parasitology exams last semester. We had to name each phase and also the species in question. lol. More Random: http://www.thingsbearslove.com/ For Laughs, They defiantly need a vet app one, something like: Student stressed from vet apps... makes easy prey for bear to sneak up on. 3rd 2nd year?

I posted some negative comments about the lack of leadership to improve the health of a certain other breed I am associated with and not surprisingly was flamed from multiple dragons. Even well-meaning breeders are so sensitive to criticism these days that they seem reluctant to consider that more could or should be done. The entrenched conservatism (not talking national politics here) is really disappointing. I mean, I am a relative insider and know at least a little more about medical issues than a random owner.

I was surprised that there wasn't more about their breeding difficulties. It should be a red flag that C-sections are the norm for bulldog deliveries.

For the record, $5000 a pup is ridiculous, and this breeder was 'stacking' the pups within 30 min of their birth. Beautiful golden retriever, one of the pups was slated to (once weaned) be airlifted to a buyer in Venezuela?!? |

I don't know a lot of conformation-only breeders, but I do know a lot of people who work and breed dogs (who maybe do conformation on the side just to get the titles on their dogs). The reason a well-bred puppy from a responsible breeder may (and I mean MAY, some of them are around the same price as the sad genetic wastelands you find at Petland or whatnot) cost more is that these people put a whole lot more into their dogs too. Genetic testing, training, show/trial entering fees, travel to all of those...it's not cheap. Most really good breeders aren't really making $$$$ on their puppies at all despite the prices. And usually there's a variable price per puppy anyhow, dependent on whether the animal is a good work/show/breeding prospect or will be sold as a pet.
And yes, bulldogs are screwed up as they currently are bred. |

I should have been clearer. I didn't mean to imply the breeder was overcharging. The stud fees alone can be in the $1000s (especially for stored semen of dead champions) and then the cost of insemination etc.
I was reacting to the idea of spending $5000 for a pet you will never show. The good show prospect going to Venezuela was $10,000 plus travel paid for dog and breeder by buyer. The others were going as pets for 5.000 |
