For example:

is it possible to get accepted to an MPH program without being complete? I feel like my recs are going to hold me back timewise, and I was wondering if an adcom ever pulled the trigger before receiving all 3 recs

Have you thought looking at other recs? SOPHAS won't send your application without 2 recs, and I would seriously doubt an admissions committee would consider your application if it's incomplete.

I'm sure every school is different, but all of the schools I applied to last year held your application until it was considered "complete" (i.e. Sophas sent my application without my confirmed GRE scores so the admissions offices held the application until they had them before passing it on to the adcom).

Some schools only require 2 letters of recommendation and would most likely send it on to the adcom without a 3rd (Per Sophas: SOPHAS will not begin to process your application until at least two letters of recommendation have been submitted on your behalf, your application is submitted and paid, and an official transcript has been received from each U.S. institution listed in your Colleges and Universities Attended section) - so if you are applying to schools that use SOPHAS then they won't get your application without at least two LOR's and then the school will probably hold it until it gets the third if 3 are required for admission or pass it on to the adcom if only 2 are required. Probably the same story for non-SOPHAS schools, if they require 3 then the adcom probably won't see it until they get three, or 2 if they require two.

Good luck!

You may have some luck on the MPH Applicant thread with this question as well

GRE: 590V, 680Q

Undergrad GPA: 2.8... SOPHAS calculated it a bit differently than I had hoped, and I think this is really going to hurt my application. I'm hoping they'll maybe see that 90% of my classes are senior level, difficult classes, and that my last two semester GPAs are high 3s , I also had some familial and personal issues going on that I indicated in my Personal Statement... My major is Neuroscience.

Experience: Some ongoing public health volunteering (but I didn't realize it counted as public health, until I talked to an admissions counselor-- after I turned in my application. She said most schools will go ahead and recognize it as public health experience when they look at my application; I hope so.) And I have about 150-200 other hours of volunteering. I'm involved with our campus UNICEF association, and two academic organizations.

I'm only fluent in english, but I indicated on my application that I am an 'intermediate speaker' of French, and I know enough Armenian, Italian, Russian, and Spanish to greet people, see how they are going, ask them about their day, and give some directions (I guess that could be useful for Public Health? I indicated I am a poor speaker in these)

Waiting on: BU, Yale, Hunter, SUNY Downstate, Columbia, Albany, Umass...etc. I'm not very confident that I'm going to get in after the GPA thing, so I'm applying to way too many schools.

Good luck guys,

I haven't applied yet...grrr. Every time I saw the notice line "Please submit your application as soon as possible" I felt so panic....

Anybody can comment how the "late application" will be in disadvantage compared to "early application" (given both are submitted before application deadline).

Keep your finger crossed =)

My sister is finishing up her MPH there, and she has found it to be an excellent institution. Boston as a whole obviously doesn't have what New York or DC or the other major cities may have in regards to the hands on work environment some may be looking for, but in regards to research, you can't ask for more of an academic environment. I personally do not have it at the top of my list to go to, only because it would be ideal for me career-wise to end up in NYC at NYU or Columbia, since my ultimate goal is an MPH/MSW and to work with inner-city youth programs. That being said, I don't think I would be in a bad place if I ended up receiving my degree from BU. What are your thoughts?

Received an onsite invitation from the Michigan School of Public Health today, which includes an interview with a faculty member for the MHSA program. Good sign or something that most applicants get invited to?

I also received the invitation. January I presume? From my understanding, it is a good sign and a pretty standard part the HPM department, especially this early into the admissions process. Perhaps I will see you there. PM for more information if you'd like.

Don't forget to count in time for the holidays, as many schools have off between Christmas and New Years. Try not to stress too much if you don't hear after three weeks.

Hey guys, new around here - discovered this site yesterday when I was being all nuts looking at grad school stuff online.

Here are my stats:
GRE: 710V, 730Q

Undergrad GPA: 3.66

Experience: 3 years as a RN, working mainly in women's health

Applied to/Waiting on: JHU and UNC (I feel like I maybe should have applied more places, but these are the only two I really want to go to!)

I'm pretty much in love with the Maternal/Child Health Program at UNC, so I'm crossing my fingers on that one. From everything I've heard from the open house/here, they tend to be on the slower end of the admission process. It is exciting to see that Hopkins tends to be faster, I'd love to know I got in somewhere sooner rather than later!

Good luck, everyone!!

Spring-I think you have a great shot at both. UNC's MCH tends to let people know earlier than other departments there and I would be shocked if you didn't hear in January. Good luck!

Mystikal and healthdisparity: I also received an invitation to Visit Day at Michigan, January 19th 2012.

I applied to Michigan’s MHSA, Hopkins’ MHA, Minnesota’s MHA, Harvard’s SM2 (mgmt focus), and University of Washington’s MHA.

Had a phone interview at Hopkins on 12/7/11 with Teresa, and have a follow up Skype interview with the director before the year’s end. Went very well, though they said they still don’t inform everyone of acceptance/rejection until Feb 2012. Had an interview at Minnesota on 12/9, though I’m not sure how well it went.

I fly into Detroit, MI on 1/18 and still have to figure out a way to Ann Arbor, and also somewhere to stay. I was born in Ann Arbor, so I feel a certain connection…

Stats:
GRE: 730 Q, 680 V
GPA: 3.35, 2008 graduate.
~5 years of healthcare experience in roles of increasing responsibility, great letters of rec.

Any insight to Michigan’s visit day? Or follow up emails or packets that you’ve received? Feel free to PM me.

Cheers,
Alex
