Exclamation Any interview invitations/rejections yet? (Match 2012)

SDN Members don't see this ad. (About Ads)
Good evening everyone~ Happy New Year.

Like I mentioned in the title, has anyone received any interview invites/rejects yet?
A couple of my deadlines were right after New Years and I haven't heard back yet, only received an email stating that my application is currently being reviewed.

UGH started their phone interview invites (stage 1), if they like you, in person interview - their deadline was Jan 5th or 6th I forget

Half of my programs deadlines are mid Jan so that'll be a while for me to hear from these.

Got a rejection from Buffalo VA. Originally their deadline was around Jan. 15th. I sent it on Dec. 20th, and soon after that they sent me an email that they stopped looking at apps after Dec. 19th because they got too many apps.

Bacillus1, I'm sorry to hear that =(. I wish you the best~

Do you mind me asking how many other places you applied to and did you apply for James J Peters (Bronx VA)?

Had a few Jan. 5-6th. Understandably (I hope) nothing yet. West coast apps. Good luck all.

Thats really crazy! I didn't think programs do that but I guess when theres already enough "qualified" applicants. Makes me a little nervous for the programs I applied to because all of them were due around Jan 15th also

All of my deadlines were Jan. 10 or 13th. I applied for 6 programs on the west coast. I got one e-mail confirmation so far saying they would let us know of our interview status by the 17th. We should create another thread in another month or so that tells what our interview ratio was. I would like to have 6 interviews, but if I get that many I'm not sure how much energy I would have to successfully execute them. The combination of difficult rotations plus my weekend job keeps me at less than full strength.

Last week, someone I know got desperate for a last letter of recommendation. They asked for the letter 2 days before the application deadline lol. The preceptor was nice enough to actually write a letter though. I wonder how many people are procrastinating their apps right now-- time is running out.

I applied to 8 other programs. Buffalo VA was the only program in NYS that I applied to.

I got rejected from a VA already also (different VA though and they actually did review my application) . Guess it stung a little bit because I wasn't expecting to hear back from programs until the deadline had at least passed, instead I was kicking off the new year with a rejection e-mail.

And to answer the original OP's question, I have not heard from any of the other programs yet.

That totally blows. It's not like you sent it in at the 11th hour. Boo on them.

Most of my deadlines were right around the new year. I have already been offered two on-site interviews and one phone interview.

What? That is crazy! I've never heard of "rolling admission" for residency applications. Most programs wait until they have all applications to evaluate the applicant pool and pick the best ones. They are totally selling themselves short and might be missing the perfect resident. On the brightside, they let you know early enough that you may be able to apply to a back up.

I'd make an argument that this is wholly unprofessional. If they said the selection process was rolling, different story. It's like closing a pharmacy 2hrs early because too many patients came in and the staff got tired.

But I guess if you get that many applicants, you can do whatever you want. My guess is that a) the applicants they "want" (ie internal, known to the director, etc...) already applied or b) the applicant was being rejected for their application but the site just used the overload excuse.

Either way, yeah...totally selling themselves short.

I don't think (b) is the case, as they really didn't have time to fully review my app. They basically sent me the email a day or 2 after I sent out the app (so right when they received it), without even having my transcript or LORs. Could be (a) though. Oh well, not like I applied to just 1 program. Hopefully some of the others invite me within the next few weeks. The 2 programs that told me when they're sending out interview invites said they'll be doing that in about 2 weeks.

Also, someone that was interested in the same program told me that an email was sent out the day after Midyear to send in apps as early as possible, but I guess I must've missed the sign-in sheet at Midyear, since this was one of the first programs I talked to. Still, they could've changed the deadline on their site, like another program I applied to did (moved it up a month between when I talked to them at the local residency showcase and when I saw them at Midyear).

Look at it this way: do you really want to be in a program that changes things up on you without warning?

Good luck to all the residency seekers!

Exactly what I thought when I read the post.

Any fellowship seekers this year?

That site tends to do things a little differently, so try not to be too bothered/offended by their decision (easier said than done, I know). My year, I interviewed there in December over holiday break... They hadn't even received my letters of recommendation yet.

I agree with this sentiment wholeheartedly. I think it's important to respect the interview process of the program you choose. While you may not know the ins and outs of the behind-the-scenes stuff, you can at least tell if the program played fair or if you felt uncomfortable with their approach. Remember, you will be on the other side of the table the next year...

Plenty. Some really good ones, too... We already started interviewing last week and continuing into this week. Hopefully, we will be done with the interviews this week... our definite goal is to be completely done with recruitment by the end of January. All the fellowship programs I am aware of try to be done well before Match cut-off date, so those who don't make it into a fellowship can try for a residency if they so desire. Though, of course, we want to be done early for our sakes too - it takes a lot of time and effort to bring candidates on site. Not to mention money.

Just out of curiosity - do any residency programs pay for your flight/hotel for the interview? Most (perhaps all) fellowship programs do.

This was the story my two years of residency...changed the rules in the middle of the game and little you could do about it. If anything it taught me to be flexible and adaptable to any situation.

This was several yrs ago, but when I was applying for PGY1 residency, I got offers to pay for 2/7 programs. I only used 1 because the other was a local program. My current employer does not pay any expenses for residents. We interview too many candidates and it would cost a small fortune.

When I was a PGY2 - I got offers for hotel rooms at all 3 locations that I applied at.

None offered to pay for flights.

Many programs will at least give you a list of local hotels where you can get a discount if you mention you are interviewing at the hospital.

Job interviews for specialist/faculty/industry positions...way different story. I got flights, hotels, and meals all comp'ed.

I still haven't heard back from any programs :'( i applied to 10 so far. Should I be worried? One of the programs that informed me upon completion of my application said "due to the overwhelming amount of applications we received this year, please answer the following questions--and send it to us via email by this week"

Is it normal for a site to ask for another "supplemental" application portion post deadline? the questions are answered in my letter of intent.

I guess I shouldn't complain--it is my top choice program...

Aw mannn, I hope I get at least one interview--I worked so hard and practiced my presentation and read up on the latest advances on the topic. I hope my effort isn't wasted

Wow I didn't think anyone does that but seems like a good way to weed people out. But good to know, i'm checking my emails constantly >.<
One of the programs I applied to had 7 supplemental questions... that deterred my friend from applying.

Yeah I check my phone for emails constantly and I get super excited when it's a new mail and it turns out to be an email about 20% off at Bloomingdales. Lol.

I think only one of the VAs I applied to, asked for a longgg pre-assessment form. I think it had about 20 questions, which made the form turn out to be 6 pages with answers. It asked stuff like "please list examples/experiences/projects you had in the following skills--leadership, teaching, verbal communication, public speaking, computer skill...etc." I was close to giving up on their application but, darn, it was because of my rotations with them and one particular patient they had that motivated me to do residency.

Any updates for other people?

Has anyone heard from Boston VA? They haven't told me if my application is completed. And that application was due 01/02/12

I wouldn't worry too much now, I think I only got interview offers because both of those applications were submitted shortly after midyear and their deadlines were Dec 31st. Either way, I haven't heard from anyone else since...other than the generic "your application has been received. Thank you". Just give it another couple of weeks. I'm sure that if you worked as hard as you think you have on preparing for a residency program, you'll get interviews. Best of luck!

One interview rejection from out West, large, teaching hospital. I hope this isn't a bad sign that the other academic facilities won't even want to interview.

Do people get emails or phone calls when they're invited to interviews?

seems they give pretty short notice. one program said they would inform applicants of an interview during the last days of january, and the first interview date is feb 1! fortunately i'm close enough to drive, but what if i wasn't??

also, i haven't been able to find any interview feedback. does anyone have a good resource on how to prepare? thanks.

with that i'd book a flight on southwest and reserve a hotel. but it sounds like that's the "1st" interview date so there must be others to choose from.

Congrats!

Are we going to get a 2012 Match Stats thread going or just continue off the 2011? I'm really interested to see the CV qualifications and matching that occurs this year as I'm playing the game next year

So I heard back from 4 programs today. I guess today was a busy day for them:

1 phone interview beginning of next week
1 in-person interview end of next week (requires a 20min presentation... which I've been practicing~~)
1 rejection (*tears* why Boston VA??)
1 e-mail requesting more details in reference to some things on my CV (my top choice program)

I still haven't heard from my second and third top choice yet, however, my classmates have.

----

I don't think 10 programs are overkill, especially with how competitive it is. I guess it depends on the type of person you are. I'm not that nitpicking and look for very few things in a program. I can easily get along with most programs. Plus, my GPA is kind of low...(greater than 3.0, less than 3.5--range) and never held a chair position on APhA or ASHP or whatever-- so I knew I couldn't limit my options THAT much.

Something that I learned -- apply early... which surprisingly, none of my preceptors stressed the importance of early applications. The people I've spoken to that heard back the earliest (rejection/invitation) applied a few weeks after midyear

Got a phone interview, and on-site interview, and a letter saying that rather than looking at any of the PGY-1 residency applications for a position posted on ASHP's website, the program is going to look at PGY-2 students instead.

Hey bacillus,
I just started to hear from some programs with deadlines around Jan. 1 in the last couple of days so I wouldn't worry too much yet.

Plus I heard that the hospital here received a record-setting number of apps, so if you applied to popular programs (or who knows, maybe any program at this point), sites could be taking time to sift through all of the applicants. I don't know...maybe I'm just trying to rationalize why I haven't heard anything from the hospital here yet!

Our deadline is tomorrow and we were still getting quite a few applications this week. Some of the applications have been reviewed/scored...but we are waiting until we have everyone done to offer interviews. We should have everything done by the end of next week!

Nope, but I know a few preceptors there. That is a newer/smaller program, but they have really been trying to build up their clinical services.

Are you associated with the Rutgers Fellowship program? I am curious if anyone has scheduled an on-site for the Rutgers Fellowship Program.

is it standard practice for programs to email applicants if they are NOT being invited for an interview?
