Is it too forward to ask the admissions office if they know when / if there is a revisit weekend? I want to make sure I am around for it but will be out of the country for a few weeks in March / April and will plan around it.

Hey everyone. I was recently accepted here. I was hoping someone might be able to tell me about whether the school/students are gay friendly or not. Probably no one would say it's not the place to go if you are but in general what is the atmosphere like?

I go to Stony Brook undergrad and I would have to say it is gay-friendly. I have a few gay friends and they have never had any complaints about anything with the school. I don't think many people care about that sort of thing and I'm sure it's the same over at the med school.

Anybody know when the second look is? Sorry to ask this question if answered (I looked through past posts...)
I see March 2nd as the open house on their website; is that the 2nd look for accepted applicants? Last edited by mipp0; 02-13-2012 at 04:18 AM. |

What does that mean? I know people who have already received acceptances and others who have received pre-interview rejections. I wonder if we are in the "maybe" pile and they are seeing what else comes along without putting us on a formal hold.

I was just waitlisted
Does anyone know if stony brook has a "high priority" waitlist? Or are all just clumped into one?? |

Based on last years thread, there was a high priority and a regular waitlist. SB says they don't always have a HP WL, though.

Seems somewhat disadvantageous for everyone who interviewed earlier. I would suppose it is to give a chance to those excellent candidates who interview late spring? |

So this must be really great news for those who interviewed but havent heard in months~ Most of you guys are prob on file for the HP waitlists. |

Look at the bright side, the admin says you have about a 50% chance of acceptance post interview so if it wasn't an outright rejection you are still in the running (you didn't roar to the finish line but rather are chugging along at the speed limit lol)!

True. Heard that roughly 20% of waitlisted applicants are offered an acceptance.

But this really only seems encouraging if there was no HP waitlist. Considering there is, and also the disproportionate number of applicants/people leaving Upstate for Stony Brook due to Probation, I don't really see a reasonable chance of acceptance. |

Not really sure what you are referring to so I can't comment, but you are starting to sound like a pessimist. As long as there is hope keep dreaming is my opinion.

II, OOS. Anyone have any idea what time the interview day ends? I'm trying to figure out flying logistics.

Admin said SB's philosophy is to give everyone they think is eligible an interview. Given that they got over 4900 applications this year (up from 4600 last year) the interviews will go later as well. She said last year they went to the end of Feb but will likely go into early March this year. Looks like they are there now. Really can't say when interviews are done though.

Hey guys,
I was complete here 12/23, but still haven't heard back. I was wondering if there's still a chance I might be invited to interview? I'm an slightly below average applicant with a 3.59/33. Should I send an update letter? I would really like to go here, as it's close to home and family. If you recommend sending an e-mail, do I send it to the somadmissions@stonybrook.edu address? Who do I address it to, and what should I put in the subject line? Last edited by abe lincoln; 02-16-2012 at 06:07 AM. |

If you really want to go then definitely yes send an update letter...it cannot hurt at this point.. I do suggest calling them first to make sure you are not rejected (they only send these through snail mail) because you dont want to email your update and be getting your rejection letter the next day...be honest when you call and let them know you want to send in an update but would like to know if you are still in the running and they will tell you. Good luck! |

Thats what I did when I sent in any update letters to schools,. anybody else think it should be addressed differently? As the subject probably just put: Medical Applicant - Application Update Documents Attached |

I sent my LOI as a pdf attachment, and in the body of the email wrote "I really enjoyed my visit to SB blah blah blah. I have attached a letter of interest....."
Good Luck

Also, I would suggest you attach the letter and not include in the body of the email. It just makes it look more "official" and "professional" and looks better when they print it out to put into your file. |

Interesting news guys.... the verdict is in: apparently the writing section does not matter (or does not matter enough)... it got axed from the MCAT starting in 2015. So there you go. https://www.aamc.org/newsroom/newsreleases/273712/120216.html |

Downstate mainly. I've pretty much ruled out UMDNJ-NJMS. Sending letters to schools I haven't from as well even though I don't think much will come of it. Would be dumb not to try though when I paid all that money to apply.
