Default UTK c/o 2016 Applicants

SDN Members don't see this ad. (About Ads)
Couldn't find a UTK thread for this application cycle, so I started one.

If you also applied to Tennessee, here's the thread to talk about it!

Default Limited accreditation

Is anyone else nervous about their limited accreditation? I know UTK is a fabulous school so it didn't stop me from applying, but it will be something to take into consideration if they are one of the schools I'm (hopefully) accepted to...

There's a little bit of back and forth about this on last years thread, but if you have any specific questions don't hesitate to ask. Basically what it boils down to is that they needed to renovate the large animal hospital, which is (I believe) fully funded, well underway, and if I'm remembering correctly is slated to be done when the class of 2014 gets to clinics in a year and a half.

I applied to Tennessee. I shadowed a vet that graduated from there and LOVED the school! He still goes back every year for his continuing education stuff. He told me that it is a great school for getting hands on experience from the get go. I applied mostly because of what he said and because they interview last so it will be like a last ditch effort for an acceptance if I don't get into Ohio State or Wisconsin. If OOS tuition was cheaper, it'd probably be my top choice. Does anyone know if there is any chance of getting in state tuition after the first year at Tennessee? From what I have read, the answer is no .

Pretty much. The only way I know of is to have a spouse that gets a full time job here.

Agreed! Other than UTK I think I'll have heard from all of my schools by February, and the idea of waiting even longer than that... Augh my nerves!

Look at the bright side, if you haven't gotten any acceptances, it will mean you could still get in somewhere in March . And if you've already gotten acceptances, well then the wait won't be so bad because you already know you're going somewhere.

No problem, and I'm happy it helped.

I was lucky -- my school allows pre-ordering of transcripts for grades, which made things a lot easier and less stressful. I was able to order and pay for getting them sent, but they'd only send them after fall grades were posted.

And in the end, I'm glad one of my schools (NCSU) rejected me outright months ago. I saved $7 not having to send a transcript to them. $7 = a whole Chipotle burrito.

Bumping the thread haha no one have a heart attack!

Anyone know what the "score" cut-off for interviews usually is? I've been lurking on last year's the number 90 came up somewhere. Just wondering if anybody has more information about this year. I hate this wait

I think the score cut off changes every year to reflect the individual applicant pools. I need to try to score myself, but I never know exactly what science classes to put in to the science GPA, and which classes count for the last 45 since I had two semesters post-graduation and one semester took only 7 hours.

I don't honestly know about the cut off, or which science classes to include in sGPA. But I do know that UTK counts all semesters, including post-bac, through and including all classes taken in the semester that finishes out the 45 hours.

Ok, I tried to calculate my points score, and if I did it correctly (which is doubtful, because that was complicated) I have 125.75 points, which comes out to a flat 80. Hmm...I got a B-.

So? It's high enough for an interview, and high enough that you only need about half credit from the interview to have a chance at acceptance.

This may be a silly question.. but does anyone know if they use the grades from your fall 2011 semester?

I think so, yes. But don't quote me on it. If you really desperately need to know, Deborah Shepard can tell you, and is typically good about returning phone calls if she's not in her office to answer.

I hope you're right, and that I calculated correctly, because that would be the most positive response I have gotten from a school this application cycle!

so if we are calculating our last 4 semesters, are we just looking at the last 4 semesters when we applied to VMCAS or the last 4 semesters including last semester??

Include last semester. They do look at your fall grades, which is part of the reason they don't do interview invites until March.

I got a call from Cindy today saying that they havn't received my GRE scores or my fall transcripts.. I'm shocked!! I sent my GRE scores in August and all other (9) schools I applied to received them! I sent my transcripts in early December... Apparently they received my other transcripts okay. Now I have to scan them into my computer and email them to her... bleh. stress.

This happened to me two weeks ago. Dont stress... Apparently ETS hasn't been working out for them

Possibly they are having issues with transcripts because they said at first I was missing one, then that one miraculously turned up and I'm missing the other. Thankfully, my transcript cost 8 bucks to send. Again, a chipotle burrito, but rather safe than sorry

So you re-mailed it and didn't scan it and then email it? Because in her voicemail she said to scan it onto my computer and then email it to her... but I was wondering how is that official at all (transcripts)?? lol I emailed her just for clarification

I emailed and scanned in my GRE scores- maybe that's what she meant? I believe I just express priority mailed my transcripts.

Always helps to double check though!! It's getting late in the game, so maybe she just wants to be assured that you're taking the right class? I know for Oklahoma I had to printout then scan my "unofficial" transcript

Gosh! That's a nasty surprise. So glad it can be worked out fairly easily. Re: ETS, I wish the UTK code came up in their system. That's probably part of the problem with GRE scores not being delivered, at least not to the right place.

Has anyone heard any updates? Are the interview invites going to come via e-mail or snail mail? This school is my last chance.

Their timeline on the website says interviews invites By march 1st. Hoping that means next week. It's snail mail I'm pretty sure. I'm banking on this too, fingers crossed!

Last year's thread said interview invites typically get sent out (snail mail) around the last week of February, and acceptances (also snail mail) are sent about 2 weeks after interviews.

Also I would like to take this time to mention how much I love the term "snail mail" because every time I see it I imagine a friendly little land mollusc slowly but steadily moving along, passing out tiny envelopes.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. And yes, snail mail invites and acceptances. Invites usually hit the mailbox in the last week of February. Good luck everyone!

Has anyone else tried to calculate their phase 1 points? I just tried to do it again.

Does anyone know what cut-off scores for interviews have been in previous years?

The score cut off for the 2009 cycle was in the 90's, and Dean Brace said that is where it had been for a double handful of years. I can't imagine they've changed it all that much, but it is also based on specifics to each application pool (ie. if everyone had above a 90, they would have to change the cut off....). I want to say they usually interview about 150 instate students, but I can't remember how many OOS interviews they do.

Last year they invited to interview 191 OOS students and 89 IS students. It's been pretty close to 150-190 OOS invites for the past 5 years.

Hopefully you should be getting your invites soon! Good luck!
