Default August too late to write the MCAT?

Hi everyone,

I made a thread about this before but I only got one reply (thank you to that person!). So I hope some more of you could please give me feedback. I'd really appreciate it.

So last year I wrote the MCAT in the summer and I received a 32Q (14/8/10). I am a Canadian student and I would really like to apply to at least a few American school.

The reason why I want to re-write is to bring up my verbal score. So my question is that is early August kind of late to write for the American schools? I am applying for the entering class of 2013. For Canadian schools, it shouldn't make a difference because they look at all applications after the deadline to apply but for American schools, I have heard that they look at applications as they come.

OH and I also have to write at 1pm, cuz the test centre is in US, have to cross the border so want to give me self time for traffic. The two dates for 1pm are July 6 and Aug 4. Plus, the professor I work with in the lab asked me to work on a project this summer. That is mainly why I am a little worried about writing in July. If he didn't ask and I just had to study for the MCAT, I would have taken the July 6th date.

So what are thoughts on this since you guys know more about American applications and processing? Please let me know.

Thanks a lot.

32 is a good score. If i were you, i would submit the primary app. as early as possible (around june) and note down on the app that you plan on an mcat retake. When you get your new score, you can just update your application.

This is a tough call especially when you are sitting on PS 14. There are more & more US schools leaning toward rolling admission. First comes first serves.

I agree with angldrps that turning in the primary app ASAP is a sound plan. In my opinion, whether you will retake either in July or in Auguest may not be your primary concern but to raise VB & BS to a couple of more points & hold on the PS 14 is.

I forgot who & which thread, I thought it was SN2ed, lay out that only 30+/- % point one can get for the retake of test. How do you protect your PS 14?

I sincerely don't want to sound the way I say (so negative). You know yourself better than anyone. At the end of the day, if you have the confidence, by all means GO FOR IT. It is nothing wrong with that.

Okay, that's what I was thinking too. I was planning to apply whenever the application becomes available and update my score whenever I write it. Just needed confirmation that it was a good idea. Again, I have less knowledge about the American schools than Canadian.

And I do agree about keeping my PS and BS similar and increasing my verbal. That is why I want to retake in August and not July. I wanna give myself enough time to improve on verbal.
