i also get a lot of complaints about issues from shaving - folliculitis to abscesses et al.

You've noticed an uptick ? In my neck of the woods, the outstandingly obese are the ones who are in the most frequently with pelvic/GU complaints. I thought this came 'standard'.

Ohhh, jeebus. I can't wait to get outta here. Soon, soooon....

It's rare I see anyone non-shaved any more. Maybe it is just population dependent?

Totally agree. Mildly elevated -->anxiety that my BP is high--> my anxiety makes my blood pressure go up --> Rinse and repeat the cycle.

Probably even MORE annoying is trying to admit a stable patient who happens to have uncontrolled blood pressure. Even though the admission may be for cholecystitis, the floor won't accept the patient because their BP is 180/95. It doesn't matter that this patient has probably been walking around with this pressure or higher for months or years!

To change the subject, anyone else seeing lots of aggressive/yelling/difficult to redirect/manic patients? We have decided March Madness doesn't just refer to college hoops. Everyone is so keyed up in the crisis area!

Ah, what this reminds me of (as I sit at home, status post hell, which has been ongoing for about 2 months now):

Sean Connery: I've got to ask you about the Penis Mightier.

Alex Trebek: What? No. No, no, that is The Pen is Mightier.

Sean Connery: Gussy it up however you want, Trebek. What matters is does it work? Will it really mighty my penis, man?

Alex Trebek: It's not a product, Mr. Connery.

Sean Connery: Because I've ordered devices like that before - wasted a pretty penny, I don't mind telling you. And if The Penis Mightier works, I'll order a dozen.

Alex Trebek: It's not a Penis Mightier, Mr. Connery. There's no such thing!

Nicholas Cage: Wait, wait, wait.. are you selling Penis Mightiers?

Alex Trebek: No! No, I'm not.

Sean Connery: Well, you're sitting on a gold mine, Trebek!

It's frightening that I had originally thought to post "Well, you're sitting on a gold mine" when I read docB's post. Unfortunately, I forgot to do so after my shift and then when I remembered today, someone else had posted it.
Groupthink is weird.

Birdstrike, thanks for those vids. That band rocks!

A new topic: We just opened a brand new ED.

The trauma/resuscitation rooms barely have enough room for a stretcher and an US machine.

The CP/obs center is right next to the crisis/psych patient isolation rooms.

And they put the oldest, smallest tech/nurse to watch the psych folks.

Who designed the place? People who don't work?

I mean...don't work in the ED?

Alabama Shakes have been getting some good press from respected sources (All Songs Considered, for example). Definitely an act to keep an eye on.

Birdstrike - if you like throwback bands with strong frontwomen, then you might already know Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, but just in case you don't - here's a link. In my opinion they're the best live act touring today.

A committee. One of the first question I asked was whether we would have expanded our nursing staff to meet the increased bed availability.

One of the VP's responded "of course" and suggested that I must not have thought things through.

Well, we've had a staff shortage.

That VP was terminated a couple of years ago.

My last shop went through a remodel that had already been approved before I arrived. It looked gorgeous, and split the ED into 3 geographic area when we only had 2 EPs staffing. They also put two of the doc work areas in places that had no direct contact with the unit clerk (who did all the order entry and physician paging. After my first month I was thinking that whoever designed it had never been in an ED. After my second month with the new design, I realized they had been to the ED and they hated us.

We're in the process of building a brand new 50-60 bed ER at our main campus. When I asked if we could have a "curtain-free ER" the admins scoffed at me saying it was "too expensive" to build walls, and that they could cram more beds into the ER if they used curtains. It goes without saying that the last three of our ERs that these stupid admins have built are all terrible with awful patient rooms, and non-functional doctor work areas.

"Clueless", "dumbfounded": must be criteria for MHA, MBA, or any other "advanced" degrees pertaining to healthcare administration.

I swear, those idiots must love it when the MD vs DO vs PA vs NP internal strife occurs. It takes the spotlight off of 'em.

I know in some locations there are building codes specifying how big a room has to be if you have 4 walls. By using a curtain in the front you can make smaller rooms and hence fit more in the same space.

Not saying this is a good thing, but I think it's the thought process for some.
I much prefer the sliding glass doors for what it's worth. (which is nothing)

Our hospital is doing this big push about hand washing.

I dig it. But my hands are taking a beating.

I'd like them to swab all the curtains and see what grows. And report it to the state CDC. Yeah, baby!

Haaaa...burn!

So yeah, change and all that. How do we do it? Start a new organization? "Save All Physicians" - SAP? I can already see the T-Shirts, "I'm proud to be a SAP". Let's do this I'm ready.

Or the patient that shows up to dialysis, mildly short of breath, with a well documented CHF hisotry, who's still quite stable, and has a history of being fluid overloaded when they present to dialysis, and needing.....you know, dialysis.....only to have the staff panic, call 911, have us race red across the city, to take the patient to the hospital and sit in the ED. Instead of just doing the damn dialysis and fixing the problem.

That's true, because you're here. I look forward to reading your posts.

Alex Trebek: It's not a product, Mr. Connery.

Sean Connery: Because I've ordered devices like that before - wasted a pretty penny, I don't mind telling you. And if The Penis Mightier works, I'll order a dozen.

Nicholas Cage: Wait, wait, wait.. are you selling Penis Mightiers?

How do you think the stereotype got to be a stereotype?

They marry the lawn guy and he eventually becomes a manny for the kids and cat.

Here's what's been getting under my skin lately:

"The only thing that works for my chronic pain is the dilontin."

Listen, if you know that you're a chronic pain patient already, at least display the conscious thought enough to correctly pronounce the name of the drug that you're abusing.

When I walk into a pub, and have the distinct intention of drinking poison, I say clearly what I want - "Tangueray and tonic." I don't mutter out: "the smelly pine tree stuff in teh (sic) green bottle."

That's, um, an interesting juxtaposition of sentences you got there.
